2 KEHILATH JESHURUN BULLETIN

WEEKLY PORTION

A Special Standard forSpecial People

Toward the beginning of our por¬tion this week the Torah assigns anextra-heavy penalty to a daughter ofa priest who commits an immoral act(Leviticus 21:9). The penalty providedby the Torah in her case is moresevere than that assigned to a daugh¬ter of an ordinary Israelite for asimilar transgression. The reason forthe severity is: "She has desecratedher father's tradition."

There is an important principle im¬plicit here which, for our day at least, transcends the particular sin to whichthe Torah has reference and the par¬ticular punishment prescribed. Thatprinciple is that not every one is tobe judged by the same standard. Spe¬cial people are judged by specialstandards.

This principle is important for allTraditional Jews. Our standards of

piety and ethics — the latter especial¬ly — should be beyond reproach. Weare, today, the counterparts of thesons and daughters of priests of old.We bear the full burden and glory ofthe Jewish tradition. By our behavior, that tradition will be judged, for betteror worse.

This is, perhaps, even more true forchildren who attend an Orthodoxsynagogue or Yeshiva. They should betaught to remember what they repre¬sent. When they are in public view —

be-yarmulked or otherwise — they canconstitute either a sanctification ofGod's name or, heaven forbid, adesecration of it. This is not said out

of fear of anti-semitic or anti-religioussentiments from others. It is said outof respect for human nature and hu¬man reactions which must be expectedand which sometimes are ever war¬

ranted.Maimonides in Hilchot De'ot (5:11)

'underscores the message of our Torahportion. He writes: There are someacts which are in the category ofdesecration of God's name when per¬formed by people known to be reli¬gious. These acts are those which, though not even sinful by law, willnevertheless provoke derision frompeople. For example: buying withoutpaying immediately although themoney is available; too much levity,■gluttony or drinking; speaking withpeople in other than soft and respect¬ful tones, contentiousness, etc.

Needless to say, the opposite kindof conduct on the part of TraditionalJews will not only constitute a mitz-vah, but will also bring about thesanctification of God's name.
