exhibited at the Redfern Gallery, and on leaving college he tookup teaching at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. There aredistinct phases within Reynolds' career and the present work isan example of the shift between figurative landscape and purewhite relief. The 1950s had brought critical acclaim for hisfigurative landscapes at the Redfern exhibitions, but as MichaelHarrison comments, the late 1950s and early 60s saw the'confirmation of his move towards composition based on theplay between vertical and horizontal, what he came to see asour essential relationship with landscape', and thereforetowards the more structural, such as this example, taking on'geometric forms, at first including circular shapes, sometimeswith black or primary colours, and then purely rectilinear andeventually just white'. Lot: 327LOTS 327-339 DAVID CARR (1915-1968) The painter andcollector, David Carr, has been described as 'a lost genius inthe canon of Post-War British Artists, a pioneering creator whosucceeded in his quest to paint man's epic struggle forindividual identity'. He was born to a wealthy family in Londonin 1915 who owned the biscuit manufacturing business of thesame name. He was educated at Uppingham and began hisworking career at the family firm where his father waschairman, but he hated the commercial world and left to readHistory at Oxford. In the 1950s, Carr began a remarkableseries of works depicting man's relationship with machines andindustrial production, exploring the blurred line between therepetitive movements of working men and the machines theytended. These visionary works, in a Post-Cubist style, areCarr's lasting legacy and convey his idiosyncratic view of mid-20th Century Britain. In 1968, the Bertha Shayer Gallery inNew York staged an exhibition of his paintings, but it was notuntil 1987, nineteen years after Carr's premature death fromcancer, that he came to real prominence in London. This waswhen the Mayor Gallery held a retrospective of the work of theman that Bryan Robertson called 'Â…of special importance toBritish Art of this period'. A further retrospective exhibition washeld in London in 1997 at the Austin Desmond Gallery. *DavidCarr (1915-1968), MONOCHROME ABSTRACT FORMS two,91.5 x 71.5cm, unframed; and an oil on board 75.5 x 58cm,framed (3) *Artist's resale rights may apply to this lot.Estimate: £300.00 - £400.00

It has proved impossible to trace the provenance ofthese beyond c.1920, but, apart from their dimensions, the onlydifferences [from the Argyle Street examples] are that thebackrail is attached to the rear uprights by pins through the faceof the upright, and that the seats are cut out at the rear cornersto accommodate the uprights.
