The na onal beekeeping essay is open to ac ve 4‐H club members. Cash prizes on the na onal level include: $750 ‐ 1st place; $500 ‐ 2nd place and $250 ‐ 3rd place. Each state is allowed to submit only ONE entry. The 2019 essay topic deals with “Honey Varietals, State to State”. Each jar of honey reflects a unique combina on of climate, soil, weather and flowers that is special to the individual states. Essay par cipants are to select a specific varietal for their state and discuss the flower’s uniqueness and how beekeepers can effec vely market their product. You are to include a photo of the flower, an interview with a local beekeeper who collects honey from that flower and a recipe that highlights that par cular type of honey. Essays will be judged accordingly: 40% scope of research, 30% accuracy, 10% crea vity, 10% conciseness and 10% logical development of the topic. Believe it or not, there are many ways to communicate and express your thoughts and feelings other than public speaking. 4‐H wants to showcase your crea vity in the KY 4‐H Wri en Communica ons Contest. The 4‐H Wri en Communica ons Contest is a state level compe on for youth ages 9‐18 who have a passion for wri ng. Youth can enter songs, poems, essays, monologues, press releases and PSAs. You can find rules and informa on at the website below or stop by the Extension Office. The deadline is midnight on February 25. A special “THANK YOU” to everyone who helped to make our recent 4‐H banquet such a fes ve and enjoyable event. It was great to see the accomplishments of our county 4‐H members and for them to share their experiences with those in a endance. We are fortunate to have support from the community and from the families that are involved. Marla and I wish everyone to “Make the Best Be er” in 2019.
HARDIN CO. 4‐H COUNCIL
The Hardin County 4‐H council recently received proceeds from the 2018 Ag Tag program and the Fall TSC Clover Campaign. Hardin County was 3rd in the state with the largest Ag Tag Dona ons with $3665 coming back to the county 4‐H council. As for the fall TSC Clover Campaign the 4‐H council received $301.98 both of which will be used for events and educa on ac vi es including 4‐H summer camp. BE ON THE LOOKOUT for the 2019 Ag Tag Program will once again resume in March and watch for the TSC Clover Campaign some me in April. January 31st ‐ 6:30 p.m. is the date for the next 4‐H council mee ng at the Extension Office. We will begin looking at upcoming events and ac vi es for the NEW YEAR.

FEATHERS & FLUFF POULTRY/RABBIT CLUB
Club president, Ms. Priscilla Riggs, invites those interested to join her and other members at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8th at the Extension Office to learn about proper nutri on for rabbits. It is important to provide the necessary vitamins and protein levels during the winter months to enhance your rabbit’s health.
Members will kick off the New Year by mee ng at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8th at the Extension Office. They will review YPCS updates for 2019, KUIP tagging dates along with KY Dept of Ag District and Preview Show Schedule. Please mark your calendars to keep informed for the 2019 show season.

During their November mee ng Livestock Club members prepared spaghe from scratch. They discovered that homemade sauce had a be er flavor than what was o en found on the grocery shelf. Several also took part in baking crescent rolls & learning how to read direc ons and turn on the oven!

We would like to wish a speedy recovery to our club leader Mrs. Jessica Campbell a er a recent accident and surgery. We hope to see you back in January. This year, we have made some really yummy recipes! December’s mee ng was held on December 13 and club members enjoyed a homemade gi exchange! So fun! Next mee ng will be January 10 from 4:00‐6:00 p.m. See you there!

PAWS
Paws dog club members had a GREAT me serving Thanksgiving meal to residents’ families at Kensington Manor in November. More recently they returned to Kensington for some Christmas caroling with some furry friends and spent me visi ng with residents to brighten spirits. Members will meet again on January 8th 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. Discussion topics include the upcoming lock‐in and spring field trip. ADVANCED COOKING CLUB
Bobbins Sewing Club members have been having a blast learning the basics from Ms. Becky and Ms. Wanda! We have had an outstanding response to sewing this year and look forward to all of you star ng your 4‐H clothing project in January! Mee ngs are now scheduled for 2nd and 4th Wednesdays from now un l April. Next mee ngs are January 10 & 24 from 4:00 ‐ 6:00 p.m. You will have the opportunity to showcase your finished clothing project in the 4‐H Fashion Revue, tenta vely scheduled for May 3.
This club is offered to homeschool youth who have an interest in cooking and will be offered during the school day, once a month, on 3rd Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. ‐ 12:00 p.m. However, we have a wai ng list in order to par cipate. Homeschool Chefs will be led this year by homeschool mom and 4‐H volunteer, Wendy Blan. Next mee ng will be held January 17th.

4‐H Photo Club is BACK and will begin meeting January 17 with beginners at 5:30 p.m. and advanced
at 6:30 p.m. Our new club leader, Gina Clear has some great things in store so please call the Extension

Our newest club, Advanced Cooking has been learning so much from club leader Sherry Fullington and has been having fun along the way too! This club has been focusing more on the nutri on behind each recipe and advanced cooking skills. Advanced Cooking will be held on the 3rd Tuesdays from 4:30‐6:30 p.m. Current members, check with Sherry on updates and informa on! All cooking clubs are held once monthly and are limited to the first 15 par cipants who register. Registra on fees are $15.00 and must be paid upon registra on. LEGO DRAGONS ROBOTICS CLUB
We would like to CONGRATULATE the Lego Dragons Robo cs Team as they competed in the First Lego League Regional Tournament on Saturday, December 8 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington!!! We are so proud of you! GO TEAM!! If you are interested in joining the Lego Dragons Robo cs Club, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE! Club mee ngs will be held once a month on 4th Monday’s from 6:00‐7:30 p.m. and members will meet to learn about different types of robo cs and scien fic methods through fun, hands‐on learning ac vi es! The mee ng dates will be: January 28, February 25, March 25, April 29 and May 20. It’s almost me to begin our long, awaited 4‐H Art Club! Enrollment for this club has reached its max but please feel free to call and be placed on the wai ng list. If you have not yet paid your registra on fee of $10.00, please do so by January 4th. Our first club mee ng will be held Thursday, January 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
WINTER WEATHER NOTICE As most of you know Mother Nature can be very tricky this me of year and can some mes cause dangerous driving condi ons. Therefore, I would like to remind you that if SCHOOL is CANCELED due to bad weather condi ons, ALL 4‐H CLUB MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS ARE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED AS WELL. In the event that school is not closed but threatening weather condi ons exist, please call the Extension Office at (270) 765‐4121 or listen to the local radio sta on for cancella on announcements .
This year’s Teen Leadership Academy has been busy learning what their community has to offer and how they can give back. In December, the group learned how to best prepare for College and Careers. January’s focus will be Media and Public Rela ons. More detailed informa on will be sent to par cipants a few days in advance of each session.
