Conformation, Rally, Sit, stay, down- What do all these have in common? They are all words you would hear Gregory Henninger and his dog, Rhein, practice on Wednesday’s each month with the 4-H Paws Club. Gregory, 15, from Meade County, spends countless hours a week training and teaching his Registered White Shepherd not only at meetings, but at home as well. He has been a member of the Paws Club for a little over a year and half. Looking for an after school activity, Gregory and his mother found Hardin County 4-H offered an opportunity for dog training through the Paws Club. Starting with basic obedience, Gregory and his dog Greta began attending training classes the first three Wednesday’s of the month at Bella’s K9 Academy with Paws. Since purchasing his beautiful White Shepherd, Rhein, they now attend open training through Bella’s on Monday night and 4-H training on Wednesdays. One goal Gregory has for this year is to do well in Conformation. “I just want to get Rhein to Champion,” he said and title in Rally. Conformation is when a dog is judged on how well they “conform” to their breed standard in appearance and structure. “Stacking” is the stance a dog must make in Conformation. “Conformation is the hardest, he wants to move around and not be still” Gregory said of Rhein. But he is using treats as a way to help keep Rhein focused when practicing his “stack”. Handler, Morgan, has helped Gregory learn to hold the treat and move his hand away in quick backward motions to hold Rhein’s attention longer. Rally is a more fun way of training and competing as it is a series of designated stations with instructions at each station with a command the handler and dog must execute while being timed. Gregory was able to compete at the Hardin County 4-H Dog Show last year. He also competed in the American Stock Dog Registry 4-H classes for Jr Showmanship and Rally. He is hoping now that Rhein is old enough, he can gain points at the UKC shows he competes in. Dogs must be 6 months old to be eligible for points. Achieving 100 points and beating 3 other dogs in his class would win him Champion status in Conformation. Gregory is also an Honor Student at Meade County High School. “I would like to go into the medical field,” Gregory said and has already been completing pre-nursing classes through his high school. Gregory has decided to serve his country after graduation but “he hasn’t decided between (The) Navy or (The) Army” his mother, Amber said. Regardless of where his future takes him, Gregory has the drive and ambition to achieve great things.
