President’s Letter — by Skip Holmes
The elections are over, well almost. It is now time to consider the MHCC candidates who are running for election as your club officers for 2014. A ballot is included in this issue of the Bike About and it can be found online if you do not receive a newsletter by mail.
On the ballot you will see a selection to approve changes to the club by laws. The board has reviewed the bylaws and made some minor changes. We have not made any substantive changes in many years. A short article by Bob Cohen outlining the bylaw changes is included in the newsletter. The club elections will be at the January 9th meeting at Beff’s Restaurant on Everett Road in Albany. Social hour starts at 5:30 PM with the meeting starting at 6 PM. The club will provide food, and beverages are available at the cash bar. There will be a presentation on making ride maps and cue sheets with mapping software.
This has been a great cycling season and for some of us it continues to happen. With the appropriate clothing one can ride through most of the winter. And I find that my winter cycling gear can be utilized for my other favorite activity, Nordic skiing. Just yesterday I received an email that there was sufficient snow on the Whiteface Mountain toll road to XC ski on it.
In this transitional season there are many activities to consider participating in that will keep you outside. Mountain biking on the numerous trails in the area will allow you to keep your activity level going. Some of you switch to running, hiking or even roller skiing until the snow finally arrives. Then many of you will be looking for that fresh powder to go downhill skiing or snowshoeing. I am looking forward to trying to learn how to skate ski this winter, a radical departure from my long term classic XC skiing. I will likely still enter the Lake Placid Loppet XC ski marathon as a classic style event since my technique will not be that advanced by the end of January. There are some members who have already departed for warmer climates and brought their bikes along with them.
Another recent change to the ride calendar this season has been the addition of daytime rides by the expanding number of members who have gotten to that age where they have made lifestyle changes and now have more time to ride during the day. On days when I am able to ride I have seen increasing numbers of cyclists out riding, either alone or in small groups. Others have also seen this, and have decided to offer formal MHCC daytime rides to provide an organized ride for members and the number of cyclists showing up is increasing.
Our club membership numbers have been decreasing in the last year and we do not seem to understand why this has happened. The MHCC board has agreed to set a goal of each board member signing up at least six new members. I encourage each of you to consider finding a cycling friend and asking them to join if they are not a member or have let their membership lapse. By increasing the membership of our club we can insure continued financial support and it allows MHCC to have a voice in the continued concerns about safety on the roads in our area. We use some of our funds to support the advocacy efforts of the League of Bicyclists (LAB) at the national level, and the New York Bicycle Coalition (NYBC) at the state level.
The MHCC board recently met, and approved a plan to allow up to ten members, with ride leaders getting first priority, to take a Red Cross first aid and CPR training course in 2014. We would like to become more proactive in having ride leaders and others versed in first aid training in the event an accident was to occur on a club ride. If you are interested you should contact Jenn Clunie, who is the contact person.
I will be preparing an order for additional MHCC clothing including short sleeve and sleeveless jerseys, long sleeve jerseys, wind vests and winter riding jackets. Pricing is shown on the club web site or you may contact Skip Holmes for further information.
Ride smart, ride safe!

Proposed Changes to MHCC Bylawsby Bob Cohen
The club’s bylaws were last amended in 2010. At its meeting on November 5, 2013, the MHCC Board of Directors voted to recommend further changes to the bylaws, mostly to bring the bylaws up to date with how the club actually functions and to permit conference call board meetings as permitted by New York State law.
There are many changes. Because we have made suggestions for changes throughout the document, we refer the members to the present and proposed new bylaws on the club’s web site. We will have copies for reference at the January club meeting. Language being deleted is indicated by strikeout. New material is indicated in bold.
We have updated some language such as inserting “or her” following “his” where that had not been done previously. The former Article Six, dealing with dissolution of MHCC, has been moved to the end of the document from the middle, and articles renumbered accordingly. There is authority for spending up to $300 without Board vote instead of just $100. (However the Board reviews and approves a budget each year and expenditures are expected to be consistent with that budget.) Much communication is now handled by the president or other officers, everything need not be funneled through the secretary, and the membership chair and database manager, not the treasurer, is in charge of the club member roster.
We are also recognizing that most people do not receive BikeAbout by mail any more and that the web site is the chief means of circulating BikeAbout and is now an important means of communication with the club.
Please vote on the proposed changes to the bylaws on the election ballot included in this issue of BikeAbout.
If you have any questions or concerns, the club president or any member of the board will be glad to answer them.
