FROM THE PASTOR: God’s Word Describes A Holy Family

St. Paul writes to the Christian Community at Colossae, but his words apply to family life as well.

“Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.

And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:12-21)

I encourage us to meditate frequently on these words. And let us ask the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph to intercede on our behalf to Holy Spirit to empower us to live by them. God’s plan to turn things around in a world that is increasingly, without a doubt, includes the renewal and restoration of marriage and family.

January I, Mary, Mother of God This is New Year’s Day for the world. For us Catholics, we honor Mary under her most majestic title, Mother of God. Once again, the feast refers to and affirms the mystery of the Incarnation. It does not mean that Mary created God (!) but that she carried in her womb for nine months and gave birth to her child Who is true God and true Man. The Council of Ephesus in 431 declared her to

be Theotokos - God-Bearer.

Today is a Holy Day of Opportunity and Obligation. That means, in obedience Christ Who speaks through His Church, we Catholics need to gather for the Eucharist and give thanks to God for His Son Jesus and His Mother. Mark your calendars. Masses are at 4:30 PM on Tuesday, and 9 AM on Wednesday.

New Year’s Blessing Of Time

Lord, You who live outside of time, and reside in the imperishable moment,

we ask Your blessing this New Year's Day upon Your gift to us of time.

Bless our clocks and time-measuring devices. You who kindly direct us to observe the passing of

minutes and hours. May they make us aware of the miracle of each second

of life we experience. May these our ticking servants help us not to miss that

which is important, while You keep us from machine-like routine.

May we ever be free from being clock watchers and instead become time-lovers.

Bless our calendars, these ordered lists of days, weeks, and months, of holidays, holy days, fasts and feasts -- all

our special days of remembering. May these servants, our calendars, once reserved for the

royal few, for magi and pyramid priests, now grace our homes and our lives.

May they remind us of birthdays and other gift-days, as they teach us the secret that all life is meant for

celebration and contemplation. Bless, Lord, this New Year, each of its 366 days and

nights. Bless us with new moons and full moons.

Bless us with happy seasons and a long life. Grant to us, Lord, the New Year's gift of a year of love.

Amen.

T H O U G H T S O N G I V I N G :

“Wives, be subordinate to your husbands…Husbands, love your wives…Children, obey your parents in everything…Fathers, do not provoke your children…” (Colossians 3:18-21)

Pope Francis said that families, through their life of prayer and love, become "schools of true human growth." Being credible witnesses of Christian love, especially that of family members, exerts the most positive influence on our children. We are all children of God, let us pray and love each other as God, Our Father, does for us.

HOME BLESSING KITS - Are you looking for a meaningful Christmas “Family” tradition? Why not bless your home for the New

Epiphany Sunday/the Feast of the Magi (January 5) is the most popular time to do this ritual but any other day is appropriate. As a service to the parish, families in Faith Formation made Home Blessing Kits complete with instructions and a brief prayer service for any family to follow. These kits will be available in the back of church in the large gift-wrapped box. The kits are free of charge; however, any free will offering will be accepted. May God bless your family this holiday and throughout the coming year!

The bus will meet at St. Agnes at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, January 24. Participants will travel to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, where a Mass will be held in the chapel. After Mass, the group will travel to the March, walk, and return home afterwards. The cost is $25 for adults, $15 for students. This includes the bus trip and a bagged lunch with a hoagie.
