Betty and LeeTomboulian won’t beback in Denton long,

but the musical couple has agig planned for Tuesday’s jazznight at Sweetwater Grill &Tavern.

Longtime Denton residentsand music buffs will rememberthe Tomboulians for their localband, Circo, which served upLatin jazz — with an emphasison sounds from Uruguay andBrazil.

The couple relocated toWisconsin in 2005 when LeeTomboulian got a teachingposition at LawrenceUniversity Conservatory ofMusic in Appleton.

Lee Tomboulian has onemore year on his jazz pianoteaching contract and BettyTomboulian studied andearned a certification inQuantum Energetics therapy. She works as a QuantumEnergetics therapist inAppleton.

Betty Tomboulian said thecouple has recently startedperforming again.

“We have been performingmore in the last few months,”she said. “We have a duo whereLee plays accordion and I playkeyboard or guitar — not nec-essarily just jazz but the Beatlesand R&B, along with somejazz.”

Appleton is smaller thanDenton.

The community is knownmostly for being the placewhere American paper manu-

facturing began. Lee Tomboulian said the

Wisconsin town has its ownhistory of memorable perform-ers.

“Appleton is also the birth-place of Houdini and Liberace— all kinds of bizarre peopleare from Appleton,” he said.

Texas called to the couple

because the Tomboulians missDenton.

“It’s definitely warmerthere,” Lee Tomboulian said.“But we’re also going through aperiod of reassessment withthe whole Wisconsin thing. Wehave a lot of friends inDenton.”

The couple will perform

some of its songs from earlierrecordings.

“I’m actually writing some,”Lee Tomboulian said. “I’m try-ing to bring some more har-monies into our set.”

“I might do some solo workduring the breaks that night,”Betty Tomboulian said. “AndLee might play some accor-

dion. It’ll be good to be back inDenton and see old friends.”

The music begins a 7 p.m.Tuesday on the enclosed patioat Sweetwater, 115 S. Elm St.

There is no cover charge, but the Tomboulians will haverecordings for sale at the per-formance.

Tangled1/2

Rated PG, 101 minutes.

Rapunzel (voiced by MandyMoore) finally joins Disney’s veryspecial sorority: the Disney princess-es. In this lively remake, Rapunzelknows the world only from thetower window. When the dashing,golden-hearted rogue Flynn Ryder(voiced by Zachary Levi) getsRapunzel’s attention, they decide totravel together to solve the riddle ofthe lights in the sky, which appearevery year on Rapunzel’s birthday. The duo also learns just how power-ful Rapunzel’s long, blonde hairreally is.

Who should see this: Parentsand kids, grandparents and kids, and fairy-tale lovers. Flynn is anaffable hero for boys, and Rapunzelis a strong figure for girls. And forthose who don’t love music? Disneykeeps the musical numbers to aminimum. When they happen, though, the numbers are sweet andfun.

Tron: LegacyNot screened by press deadline

Rated PG, 126 minutes.

Walt Disney Pictures has made amovie for nostalgia junkies, gamersand 3-D buffs. Tron: Legacy findsrebellious Sam Flynn (GarrettHedlund) sucked into a dangerousalternate universe, where his father,Kevin, is both master and prisonerof a computer — the Master ControlProgram. Sam discovers that hisfather was abducted by the program20 years earlier. He’ll have to playthe same digital games his fatherdid — only now the Master ControlProgram is smarter, faster and moreconfounding. Kind of like real com-puters.

Who should see this: Sci-fi/fan-tasy nerds for the 2.0 version of theMaster Control Program; moviebuffs who have an unquenchablethirst for 3-D; or anyone who hasjust had to spend a workday on thephone with tech support.

Harry Potter and theDeathly Hallows: Part 1

1/2

Rated PG-13, 146 minutes.

It’s the beginning of the end forthe Boy Who Lived. We all knewthat Warner Bros. Pictures wouldwhittle the beefy Potter books intoan inevitable duel with the dark wiz-ard, Lord Voldemort. He’s tried tokill Harry at least four times by now,but Harry has lost a battalion ofprotectors. In this sober, disturbingmovie, Potter relies on hisendurance, his wits and those of hisbest pals Hermione Granger andRonald Weasley, and a destiny hedoesn’t pretend to understand.Director David Yates subjects histhree stars to isolation, doubt, rag-ing hormones and an ending filledwith torture and death.

Who should see this: Puristswho think Potter films should followthe books closely; college and highschool sweethearts; and smart girlswho’d never soft-pedal their talentand smarts for any guy.

Megamind

Rated PG, 95 minutes.

An insecure super villain (voicedby Will Ferrell) is thwarted by a con-flicted and caped rival (voiced byBrad Pitt). Megamind is no dummy. He decides to put his powers to usefor good when a new villain arrivesto jostle Earth’s moral compass.Unlikely bonds are forged and lotsof pratfalls and one-liners ensue.Megamind is screening in regularand 3-D formats. Crisp animationand good comedic timing on thepart of a competent voice cast makethis a cartoon that goes down easy— without the wrenching emotionalapex of Toy Story 3.

Who should see this: Familieswith young children who need 95minutes of spectacle without a chal-lenging script; Ferrell fans.

Chronicles of Narnia:Voyage of the Dawn

Treader1/2

Rated PG, 115 minutes.

Twentieth Century Fox presentsthe third installment of The Chron-icles of Narnia. Two of the Pevensiesiblings, Lucy (Georgie Henley) andEdmund (Skandar Keynes) returnto Narnia with an unwilling, andsniveling, cousin Eustace (WillPoulter). They join Prince Caspian(Ben Barnes) on the ship the DawnTreader and head toward the end ofthe world. Based on C.S. Lewis’series, the third film lacks the energyand import of The Lion, the Witchand the Wardrobe and PrinceCaspian. Then again, Lewis’ novel ismore didactic and dense.

Who should see this: Anyonewho wants to remember thatChristmas is, in part, a deep, reli-gious holy day. After all, Lewispenned the Chronicles to teach post-war British youth the Christiangospel.

OPENING FRIDAYGulliver’s Travels () Jack Black is

his typically obnoxious self as

Gulliver, a mail clerk who lies his way

into writing a travel article on the

Bermuda Triangle. On the subse-

quent Caribbean trip, he accidentally

lands in Liliput, land of little people

feuding with their enemy. Gulliver

saves the day while also expediting a

romance between a princess (Emily

Blunt) and a commoner (Jason Se-

gal). This appallingly stupid insult to

Jonathan Swift contains adolescent

humor and primitive special effects,

and should appeal only to toddlers. If

that. Rated PG, 87 minutes. — Boo

Little Fockers () This third entry

in the Meet the Parents series ranks

as the dumbest of all, a dubious

achievement. This time, Jack Byrnes

(Robert DeNiro) has health problems

and wants to make sure his son-in-

Paramount PicturesJeff Bridges is the hard-drinking Rooster Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld is his young traveling companion in True Grit.

Continued on Page 11

Down and dirty‘Grit’ does right by source novel,Coens’ own wit

By Boo AllenFilm Critic

Now that it finallyappears on screen, TrueGrit is not as unlikely as

it first seemed. In fact, it is apolished, well-made explo-ration of Western mythology bythose well-known cowpokes,Joel and Ethan Coen.

In True Grit, the Coen broth-ers revert to Arkansas novelistCharles Portis’ original source. They leave their usual land-scapes of urban villains (NoCountry for Old Men), nationalsecurity high jinks (Burn AfterReading), and even their earlierentries into crime-gone-wrong(Fargo, Blood Simple). TheCoens mostly seem to ignorethe 1969 oater that landed JohnWayne a best actor Oscar andinstead opt for Portis’ morenuanced observations.

In this go-round, Jeff Bridgesplays Rooster Cogburn, an alco-holic, slovenly U.S. marshallwhom Wayne portrayed as sim-

ply the latest in his long line ofWestern icons. Bridges, though, uses the character as an excusefor prolonged scenery-chewing,hemming, hawing, blustering, boasting, and acting like aWestern version of his memo-rable Big Lebowski title role.Bridges’ performance skirts theline between lampoon and fla-vorful coloring.

Set some few years after theCivil War, the tale revolvesaround 14-year-old MattieRoss (newcomer HaileeSteinfeld). She seeks revengefor her father’s murder by cow-ardly fugitive Tom Chaney(Josh Brolin). She enlists theservices of the perpetually

drunk Cogburn to enterAmerican Indian territory totrack down Chaney and hisgang. Cogburn joins forces withTexas Ranger LaBoeuf (MattDamon). Against both theirwishes, the headstrong Mattiealso comes along.

From there, the Coens followPortis’ story, as the threesomehave a lively series of encoun-ters with both the colorful andthe dangerous. With their firstshot at a Western, the Coensrender shocking and captivat-ing images: a hanged mancrashing to earth from a highlimb; a man covered in a bearhide; severed fingers lying on atable; a single horse and riderriding against a setting sun. They also capture the stockimages. After being taunted (“Icall that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man”), Rooster is cap-tured riding into a gang of four, pumping guns from bothhands.

Longtime Coen collaborator

and cinematographer RogerDeakins easily captures theopen range, but he also rendersthe interiors in Vermeer-liketableaux. The vast night skyalso provides Deakins’ palletwith a loving canvas.

Much rests on HaileeSteinfeld’s young shoulders, inher portrayal of Mattie, whoacts as buffer between theeffete LaBoeuf and rougher-hewn Cogburn. But she mustalso speak the infrequent butimportant narration, as well asdelivering Portis’ dialogue. Herpreternaturally perfect dictionconveys the author’s formal-ism: “He.Has.Abandoned.Me.To.A.Congress.Of.Louts.”

The Coens have mixed theircustomary black humor withtheir penchant for action andhave come up with an unusualentry in the Western genre —but a jewel, nevertheless.

Rabbit Hole (1/2) Terrific per-

formances by Nicole Kidman and

Aaron Eckhart highlight this powerful

drama, based on a stage play, about

a middle-class couple whose mar-

riage threatens to crumble after the

recent tragic death of their young

son. Amid all the guilt and grief, they

each find their own ways to cope. It

manages to bring a fresh and uplift-

ing perspective to a familiar subject,

and offers provocative insight into

the grieving process, even if it wraps

up too neatly in the end. Rated PG-13,

91 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas.

Opens Saturday. — Todd Jorgenson

NOW PLAYING127 Hours (1/2) Oscar-winning

director Danny Boyle (Slumdog

Millionaire) again shows his versatili-

ty with this harrowing true-life

adventure tale about Aron Ralston

(James Franco), a hiker who slipped

in a narrow Utah canyon, becoming

immobile when his arm was wedged

between rocks. As his provisions run

low and survival hopes turn slim, he

becomes desperate. Franco is terrific,

while Boyle manages to bring sus-

pense and high drama to a story with

only one human character. Rated R,

93 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas

and Plano. — T.J.

Black Swan () Natalie

Portman stars as Nina, a ballerina

chosen to star in a new production of

Swan Lake. Her mother (Barbara

Hershey) and her ballet instructor

(Vincent Cassel) both seem more

than a little off-balance, until Nina

too starts heading over the edge.

Director Darren Aronofsky (The

Wrestler) delivers the unusual hybrid

horror-ballet film. Entertaining and

strange. Rated R, 103 minutes. — B.A.

Burlesque () Christina Aguilera

makes a positive first impression in

her big-screen debut with a perform-

ance that’s not much of a stretch.

She stars as Ali, a waitress from

small-town Iowa who moves to Los

Angeles in search of stardom. She

happens upon a neo-burlesque club

on the Sunset Strip operated by a

diva (Cher) on the downside of her

dancing career. With Stanley Tucci,

Kristen Bell and Alan Cumming,

whose acting abilities are squan-

dered by a script that lacks surprise

when the music isn’t playing. — T.J.

The Fighter () In a story based

on two actual half-brothers from

Lowell, Mass., Mark Wahlberg plays

Mickey Ward, promising boxer, who

trains with his crack-addicted broth-

er, Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale).

David O. Russell directs but fails to

find much of interest in the dead-

end brothers and their cinematically

stale story. Rated R, 114 minutes. —

B.A.

How Do You Know (1/2) Writer-

director James L. Brooks (As Good As

It Gets) returns with another of his

character-driven romantic comedies

about the interconnected relation-

ships between a top softball player

(Reese Witherspoon), a smug base-

ball star (Owen Wilson), a down-on-

his-luck corporate executive (Paul

Rudd) and his crooked father (Jack

Nicholson). It’s well-acted, but the

meandering script feels more familiar

than fresh by Brooks’ standards.

Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — T.J.

I Love You Phillip Morris ()

This decidedly offbeat, not-for-every-

one farce, which has been in legal

limbo, features Jim Carrey and Ewan

McGregor in a fact-based story about

Steven Russell (Carrey), a gay con

man who leaves his family when he

falls for a fellow prison inmate, Phillip

Morris (McGregor). When out,

Russell pulls a series of outrageous

scams to finance their opulent

lifestyle. Alternately homophobic,

silly, politically incorrect and consis-

tently outrageous. Rated R, 102 min-

utes. At the Angelika Dallas and

Plano. — B.A.

The King’s Speech () Colin

First plays the Duke of York, the next

King George VI, who, before ascend-

ing to the crown, struggles to over-

come a halting stammer. He enlists

the help of an unorthodox speech

therapist (Geoffrey Rush). Well

observed, thoughtful, intelligent film

from director Tom Hooper, with an

excellent supporting cast: Helena

Bonham-Carter, Derek Jacobi, Guy

Pearce, Michael Gambon. Rated R,

118 minutes. — B.A.

Love and Other Drugs ()

Intriguing parts never make a satisfy-

ing whole in this 1990s romantic

satire about a brash young Viagra

salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal) whose

attitude is placed in check by a trou-

bled painter (Anne Hathaway) deal-

ing with a medical condition. The lat-

est from director Ed Zwick (Legends

of the Fall) has a lively pace and

strong performances, but it’s also

wildly uneven, with several frustrat-

ing shifts in tone that keep the audi-

ence at an emotional distance. Rated

R, 112 minutes. — T.J.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale() Quirky horror comedy from

Finland about an archaeological dig

that accidentally unearths Santa

Claus, which leads the citizens of a

snowy town to suspect the worst

when its children start disappearing

soon thereafter. Eventually Santa’s

elves try to come to his rescue. The

film’s dry and subversive sense of

humor is its chief strength, even if it

turns more soft than edgy. Still, it’s

an ambitious and darkly original fairy

tale. Rated R, 84 minutes. At the

Texas Theatre. — T.J.

The Social Network () In a

case of better-than-it-sounds, David

Fincher directs from a script by

Aaron Sorkin about the creation of

Facebook. Jesse Eisenberg stars as

the Harvard undergraduate who

wants to expand his social life and

ends up creating the world’s fore-

most social networking website,

making millions and being sued by

everyone he considered a friend.

Fast, funny, clever and well done.

Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — B.A.

The Tempest (1/2) Shakespeare

supplies the sublime words, and Julie

Taymor contributes the outlandish

visuals in this stylized version of the

Bard’s play. Director Taymor uses

contemporary special effects to

show the magical prowess of

Prospero, here Prospera (Helen

Mirren), the wizardly ruler of an iso-

lated island who takes revenge on

those stranded after the tempest.

Unfortunately, Taymor goes for broad

laughs with her cast, which includes

comedian Russell Brand. It is not the

stuff dreams are made of. At the

Angelika Dallas. Rated PG-13, 110

minutes. — Boo Allen

The Tourist () The pairing of

Oscar winners Johnny Depp and

Angelina Jolie lend star power to this

otherwise muddled romantic thriller

about a math teacher (Depp) who

crosses paths with an alluring

stranger (Jolie) on a train to Venice,

before he realizes that she’s some-

how involved in a dangerous interna-

tional scheme. The actors can’t res-

cue a tedious mistaken-identity

script that relies on formulaic cat-

and-mouse plot mechanics. But at

least the Italian scenery helps pass

the time. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes.

— T.J.

Unstoppable () Forget that it’s

supposedly based on a true story and

ignore the logical side of your brain,

and there’s some fun to be had in

this high-octane thriller about a loco-

motive engineer (Denzel Washing-

ton) and a young trainee (Chris Pine)

forced to put aside their differences

to stop an unmanned, out-of-control

freight train. Veteran director Tony

Scott knows his way around an

action film, and he wisely keeps the

adrenaline pumping while Washing-

ton makes the most of a thin script.

Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. — T.J.

Yogi Bear () Kids might enjoy

this frenetic 3-D adaptation of the

classic cartoon, which places CGI

bears in a live-action story about a

greedy politician who wants to close

Jellystone Park just before its 100-

year anniversary. It’s up to mischie-

vous Yogi (voice of Dan Aykroyd) and

Boo-Boo (Justin Timberlake) to save

the day. The sight gags and one-lin-

ers are sporadically amusing, but the

script proves that the material isn’t

meant to be stretched to feature

length. Rated PG, 80 minutes. — T.J.
