Band Notes Submitted by Ms. Enns

We have been focusing on building our team (or music family) with reflective assignments, deep discussion, a musical pursuit of excellence and team building rewards classes. To celebrate the “Our Band, Our Family” culture that we are working towards, Ladesha C., Madison C.K., and Hailey P. created our poster design for this year, a tradition that celebrates all students and promotes acceptance of all talent. A number of classroom leaders contributed to the final product. Thank you for your leadership!

A standing ovation to our Grade 6’s for their debut performance on Wednesday, December 20, at the Dugald Estates. They were brave, well-prepared and very musically mature for their level. There have been a number of performances in recent months and we thank these ensembles/individuals for representing our awesome Band program: Jazz Band and soloists (Nov 18, Springfield Ag Society Banquet), Mme Kennedy’s Gr 8’s/Trumpet soloists Hayden B., Dominic P., Nic Hnytka/Amie K. piano intro (Nov 10, Remembrance Day); Mme Palmer Gr 8’s (Oct 25, assembly). Don’t forget to check all the student performance recordings on the cenns.pbworks.com Band website (look under “Hear our Students” in the navigator).

For a sixth consecutive year, the ÉDS Band Program has been recognized as International Music Camp (IMC) Top 10

Canadian School. Thanks to the scholarship program, now in its 11thyear, we have been able to send many students

to camp with financial support.

Congratulations to the September/October/November “Dragon Musician of the Month” Trophy recipients: Ajay F.,

Paige B., Grace K. (6); Carson S.R., Kiera L., Sabrina Z. (7); Jordan D., Hayden B., Jonathon K. (8). Each month, we

recognize one student per grade level for their musical leadership and dedication to our program. Thank you to all

students for their ongoing efforts!!!!

During the month of December, Room 19 has been participating in the Twitter project called #DéfiMulti, an initiative started by

Julie Chandonnet and Catherine Lapointe. Each day during the month of December, our classroom went on Twitter to look at

what our daily challenge was. Challenges varied from sharing our favorite book, character, holiday decoration, to creating a

sentence without the letter p or a, to sharing a math problem and a rebus for others to solve while we were trying to solve

theirs. With #DéfiMulti, we were invited into the world and classroom of many schools, most of them from Québec and France,

while we welcomed them into ours. It gave us a unique chance to connect and communicate with them. It was a great experience

for everyone involved!

Talent Development Submitted by Ms. Enns

We are featuring a talent development initiative that supported community outreach and acts of kindness. Gracie S., Saddie O., and Brynn P., our artistic ambassadors, created rock art and delivered this to the townspeople of Dugald. Here is what they have to say about the project… What is the project? Saddie: We have been looking at friendship poems and decorating rocks. Gracie: We are creating pumpkins because it is autumn. Brynn: We are doing this to show love in our community.

What do you like about this project? Saddie: It is very fun and cool to participate. Brynn: I know people will appreciate it. Gracie: It is creative and it makes me feel good.

Why is this project important? Saddie: It will bring people together. Brynn: It will put a smile on someone’s face. Gracie: We made something for someone else’s home and we feel a part of it.

Mindfulness at ÉDS Submitted by Ms. Enns

How do we alleviate stress? What tools do our students need? How do we parent mindfully? As the school works towards implementing a culture of mindfulness, we hope that such skills will transfer into the home, and make home time as productive, joyful, and relaxing as possible. The following information is adapted from the “8 Ways to Teach Mindfulness to Kids” blog by Sarah Rudell Beach (Huffington Post, 2014). Here are some strategies you can try with your child: 1. Listen to the bell. An easy way for children to practice mindfulness is to focus on paying attention to what they can hear. You can use a bell, a set of chimes or a phone app that has sounds on it. Tell your child that you will make the sound, and they should listen carefully until they can no longer hear the sound. 2. Practice with a breathing buddy. The child grabs a stuffed animal, and then lies down on their back with their buddy on their belly. They focus their attention on the rise and fall of the stuffed animal as they breathe in and out. 3. Make your walks mindful. A “noticing walk.” Stroll through the neighborhood and notice things that haven’t been seen before. Designate one minute for complete silence and simply pay attention to all the sounds— wind, cars, woodpeckers, a snowblower. 4. Establish a gratitude practice. Gratitude is a fundamental component of mindfulness, teaching

our children to appreciate the abundance in their lives, as opposed to focusing on all the toys and goodies that they crave. At dinner, each share one thing to be thankful for. 5. Make a Mind Jar. A mind jar is a bit like a snow globe - shake it up and watch the storm! But soon, if we sit and breathe and simply watch the disturbance, it settles. As do our minds.

Hot Lunch Program

As you already know, DPAC will continue to offer lunch option to our student. We have moved to an online ordering system at www.healthyhunger.com. Please ensure to register your child(ren) and the system will automatically notify you of new lunches! If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, please contact Jasmin Percival at [email protected]. Stay tuned! January dates will be posted soon!

The grade 7-8 students in Mr. Koblun's class took on a Science Design

Challenge and attempted to create an insulator that would keep an ice cube

in solid form for at least 2 hours. Students taught themselves about

insulators and designed their own projects and took the challenge on

December 12. Students’ insulators were in variety of sizes. It was a huge

success! They designed creatively and purposefully and a few even

managed to crack the 5 hour mark! Congratulations goes out to Kaden

Sliworsky for 1st place with about 5 hours and 15 minutes, Hailey Park 2nd at 5 hours and 10

minutes, and James Prudnikov getting 3rd place with 5 hours and 5 minutes. Well done to

everyone.

In case you are wondering….

What are the funds from student fees used for? You may wonder what student fees support in the school and this is a great question. Student fees go towards supporting the following: The cost of the DJ when a dance is planned

Festival du Voyageur activities

Generosity of École Dugald School Students Submitted by Mme. McFadyen

The last couple of months have been extremely busy at Dugald raising money for the school as well as various charities. We’ve had bake and crafts sales, food hamper collections, a clothing drive, gift card fundraisers, cheese, tea and coffee fundraisers and much more. In November, as a school, we sold Momentum Gold Cards. The students were able to sell 564 cards to raise money for activities, special guests and events that happen at the school. The students who sold more than 10 Gold cards went to Boston Pizza for lunch in a limo! Another great opportunity our students had was to bring all of the donations we collected to Siloam Mission. The students brought lots of clothes, blankets and personal hygiene items for men, women and children. It was a great experience for them to see firsthand what happens there. Once again, The Book Fair was also a huge success. There were over 500 books sold. This allowed teachers to select $100 worth of books for their classroom libraries! Fundraising was also going on for the band trip to Ottawa this spring. With the Springfield Kinettes Instant Auction and Bake Sale as well as The Tea/Coffee/Honey fundraiser, they were able to raise close to $3000 for their future trip to Ottawa! In December, we had 3 craft and bake sales and Ms. Delaronde’s room also sold Candygrams. Ms. Delaronde’s room raised close to $700 for The Children’s Hospital and for The Winnipeg Humane Society and Mr. Koblun’s room raised just over $700 for The Springfield Christmas Cheer Board. For the Christmas Hampers, students and staff brought in food, gifts and money to help out 4 large families in the community. We were able to provide each family with enough food for a nice Christmas meal and extras that will last them into the new year. All children in each of these families received a gift as well to make their holidays extra special.

Lastly, A Little Bit of Warm is a fundraiser started by a student in Mme Manon’s room, Lexi Taylor. She collected monetary donations to make winter care packages for the homeless. These packages included hats, mitts, hot chocolate, etc. “I really wanted to help people cause I know how cold Canada can get” said Lexi. She also volunteers at a soup kitchen called “Got Bannock?”. Way to go Lexi! We want to thank all of the organizers that made all of this fundraising possible and all of the people who donated items, money, as well as their time to make this all possible. This is a great example of what we can do when we work together. Way to go!

Phys. Ed. News Our volleyball teams showed amazing progress in regards to skill development and ability to work as a team

throughout the season. Our boys team was able to enter two additional invitational tournaments where they

finished in 2nd and 3rd place, while our girls team made it to crossovers which they attended in Lac Du Bonnet on

December 5th. We are very proud of all of our athletes.

We have been holding grade five and six tripleball practices since mid-November which will continue into

January. Tripleball is developmental approach to the game of volleyball where we hope to give our students some

exposure to the sport before competing in middle years. Tournament dates are still to be determined; we will let

parents/guardians know via email and will update the physical education page as soon as we are given the dates.

We hope to divide the big group into two teams and practice separately after the new year.

The month of December seemed extra busy this year. We held our second annual team handball tournament for

our grade four and five students at SCI on December 16th. It was a huge success with over 80 students in attendance

including a team from Anola School. All students involved showed incredible sportsmanship and put in their best

effort throughout the day-long tournament. A big thank you goes out to the parents who spent their Saturday with

us as well as Kieran, Claire, Jake, Julianna, Lindsey, Nic, Jaxon, Kylar, Kadence, Leah, and Daniel for helping

coach and run the canteen.

Our grade seven and eight girls and boys basketball teams also started practicing at the beginning of December.

Each team is training two times a week continuing into the New Year with the divisional tournament at the end

of February.

We want to congratulate all of our students on the successes they have achieved so far this year and wish them

further success in the New Year!

Curling 2018: We are in need of volunteers to assist on our curling days! The Dugald Curling Club has graciously

offered free ice to our students on Tuesdays in the months of January and February in the New Year. We have

taken advantage of this opportunity and have scheduled three double period classes for each classroom in grades

3-8. The dates we will be going are: Jan 16th, 23rd, 30th, Feb 6th, 13th and 20th. Please see the Phys. Ed. webpage

for a complete schedule.

If you are able to assist (being an extra adult on a sheet of ice while students play their games – curling knowledge

is a bonus!) for even part of the day, please call the school or email Ms. Colwell at [email protected] so we

can make arrangements. You will need to fill out a child abuse registry form at our school office in order to

volunteer if you have not already done so for this school year.
