BUFFET LUNCHES

Page No. 3

On his retirement, my highly sensitive and emotional husband decided to lighten my house hold chores by undertaking to make and deliver morning coffee to my mother, mother in law and me. We all live together under one roof, and have done so for the past 16 years. The morning coffee is not as easy as it looks. Like all acts of life, it comes with many hidden little job addendums, especially with senior citizens around. You start by separating milk for yogurt, and then make the coffee in assorted cups at varying temperatures, with or without sugar or with sugar substitutes. Then he wakes up the septuagenarians, accompanies them to the toilet if necessary, change their sheet if called for, dispose their diapers. After all this- comes to the bedroom to deliver coffee to wife and have it himself. Now, I am a veteran of this process, recently retired. So I snooze and wait for the service.

I like and need a scalding cup of coffee to move my bowels and start the day with a clear head. Any novice would find the whole procedure a challenge, more so a person new to the maze that is kitchen. The luxury of bed coffee is too much to give up too. So I presented my requirement tacitly. The temperature of the coffee went up, along with a little temper. But still the coffee did not meet the customer satisfaction criteria. That is when I got into the alternate mode. Every day after the morning jog, I started having a glass of boiling water with honey.

The new practice went unnoticed for some time, and then became a press stopper for discussion on the dining table- a common occurrence in many joint families especially ours. My biological needs were highlighted and discussed thread bare. Consequently our morning chef vowed to improve the service. Coffee became hotter but the tempo could not be sustained. One day the mothers were ill, hence needed help, the other day the milk boiled over-needed cleaning, so on and so forth. Still, the luxury of bed coffee whether hot or cold, believe me is too much to give up!

I continued the hot water honey treatment. Analyzed, with gravity by the mothers, the topic reached boiling point with my husband boiling over-“why are you still having honey, when all efforts are made to give you hot coffee? ”.“YES! Honey has its bad effects ”added the mothers.

The whole sweetened affair was rapidly becoming rather sour.

It was time I gave up the luxury of bed and rolled up my sleeves. Next day I accompanied a belligerent other half to the kitchen. As he watched and learned, I made the coffee, attended to the mothers and showed him the little tricks learned over the years- nuances of handling the gas stove, the preventive measures which kept milk in the pot, while boiling. Plus the other time saving multitasking measures which went to make coffee- perfect for self and others.

Today, while having a scalding cup, delivered by a proud husband, in my cozy bed-I tell myself-“a thousand honeyed words cannot compensate a little action”!!

THE HONEYED WORD

WHERE DID I LEARN MY LEADERSHIP QUALITIES?

Like most eight year olds, cricket was my favorite game too; Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and Salim Durrani were my favorite cricketers. When I was in class three, I used to open the batting and chose when to bowl, the field placements were at my will and I was the uncrowned king of fairness and honesty in the form of the third umpire. If I did not get the first option to bat or a choice to bowl or to choose my team or to go for the toss, the team members would know that I am unhappy.

My friends Tublu and Pratap used to be nice to me and treat me to ice lollys and chocolates so that I can choose them in my team or toss a ball to them to roll their arms or ask one of them to open the batting with me. I also used to make bowling changes at my will, of course, I was always the Captain and when am not, then, I used to be the mentor to the others in the pavilion which was generally under a tree, telling them the nuances of the game. Nobody dare argue with me.

WHERE DID I LEARN MY LEADERSHIP QUALITIES? Continuation

On some rare occasions when I decided to take a day off, I used to be offered the role of an umpire. The legs before decisions were crucial and Tublu and Pratap always invariably had my benefit of doubt.

Back in school, my name was always put forward for elocution contest, inter-class debates, class monitor and what have you by most of my friends in my neighborhood so that they can be in my line of vision for the evening cricket match or at least for the weekend inter-colony match. By now, if you have any doubts as to who was the red house leader, banish your doubts, it was always yours faithfully.

I took on the responsibilities vested upon me along with fun and games and ended up as a good public speaker with above average leadership qualities. Then I went to the next level and was elected as the School Pupil Leader and ended my school career as the Star of the School from KV-IAF Pattabhiram in 1972. Then, was elected as the secretary of my college union and finally qualified the SSB.

Today, I thank my parents for what I am; not because of who they are, but for what they did. Back in class three, I was the only one in the neighborhood who owned a complete cricket kit consisting of a bat, tennis ball and four wickets. The kit was gifted by my parents for having come first in the class and for also having won the lemon and spoon race in the annual sports meet in the school.

Sometimes leadership is all about who has the cricket kit…….isn't it?
