IN LOVING MEMORY OF ALFONZWe are sad to share the news of the passing of our dear Siberian Lynx, Alfonz, affectionately known as “Alfie”. Alfie was born in 1998 and raised as a pet by a family who bred and sold exotic cats for a living. Typical of big cats in the pet trade, Alfie was declawed, a cruel procedure which caused him painful foot problems. In early 2000, his owners could no longer take care of their animals, at which time Alfie and his mother, Katia were placed at Chimps Inc. Before Katia’s passing, Alfie and his mother were inseperable and never slept alone. We imagine them happily together again.Alfie is fondly remembered by staff as a “real cat’s cat“, stalking small prey that found their way into his enclosure, and playing “chase” with caregivers who ran along the outside of the fenceline. Alfie always enjoyed scented enrichment, rubbing his face on plush toys scented with cinnamon, lavender, or catnip. We will all deeply miss bringing him ice water on hot days, touching his nose with a target stick during clicker training, and watching him saunter down the hill of his enclosure to meet us at meal times. After spending the day with loud, rambunctious chimps, spending some time with Alfie at the end of the day was a quiet and peaceful break. Rest in peace Alfonz.

Happy holidays to all our wonderful chimp family, The animals and humans here at the sanctuary want to wish you and yours the happiest of holidays. We send love and thanks for all your support throughout the years. With the high desert’s mild fall weather, the chimps have been enjoying their time outside in the sun and relaxing in the aerial tunnels. They have been enjoying many parties with each passing birthday and holiday, and they look forward to many more. We experienced some changes in 2016 but are confident that the upcoming years will be fruitful for us. By committing to working smarter, not harder in 2017, we have launched a new campaign to help us with donor development in the Portland area, as well as our own Central Oregon community. This will help us make new friends and move our sanctuary to the next level. This program does takes a bit of time to gain momentum, so during the transition, we are hopeful that we can count on our amazing supporters to help us finish this year strong. Topo is our alpha male. At 51, he is strong and stoic when he needs to be but has a great sense of humor and is young at heart. He is always keeping a watchful eye on his family.

Patti is known for her reserved nature but stands up for herself when she needs to! At 34, she enjoys picnics, fresh vegetables, and spending her days sunbathing in the Big Outdoors. Thiele is Patti’s sister and is a friend to all the chimps. At 30, she may be tough as nails, but she also enjoys admiring herself in mirrors and knows the importance of positive body image.

Herbie is known for his good looks and style. At 30, he wears his hats backwards and his sunglasses on the back of his head. Herbie also has a sensitive side and enjoys spending his days reading indoors.

CJ is tough to get to know but thoroughly adored by those who do. At 17, she is a major flirt and inspires jealousy in the older females. She may be fickle but she’s always there to support her friends.

Jackson is a goofy teenager who enjoys mischief. At 15, he is constantly seeking attention and looking to play. When he’s not making people laugh, he keeps himself busy with mud pies and science experiments.

Emma is small and cute but also has a rambunctious side. At 14, she’s learning how to stand up for herself and get what she wants. “Wild Emma“ is adventurous and always up to try something new.
