BLACKBURN / ASHERST GRAVE MARKINGS - CALDWELL COUNTY, KENTUCKY

November 14, 2015# The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, joined by Compatriots from Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, marked the grave of two very special Revolutionary War Patriots in rural Caldwell County, Kentucky, on Saturday, November 14.# Sgt. William Blackburn of the Virginia 5th Regiment and later the army under Gen. George Rogers Clark, and Pvt. William Asherst of the Virginia Militia, were best friends in life and buried near one another in death.  They settled the same area of Caldwell County, a community known as Farmersville, and their lives were intertwined over decades.  Some of their children married one another.# The ceremony was attended by a large uniformed Color Guard of 24 Compatriots, and approximately fifty descendants and interested local residents.  Many of the descendants were “double descended” from both Patriots.  Ten different SAR and DAR chapters presented wreaths as part of the floral tribute, and six riflemen/musketeers fired in the gun salute. This event marked the final Grave Marking Ceremony for the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter in 2015.

NEW MEMBERS! KEITH MCGRATH - CALVERT CITY, KYFRANK MCGRATH - FANCY FARM, KYALEX & CODY REID - MUNFORD, TN

# This is our latest “three generation” family to join the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter! Frank McGrath is the “grandfather” of the group. He is a veteran of the US Navy and US Air Force. He was present at the Blackburn/Aherst grave markings this month, but was ill and had to rest in the car. Frank suffers from some significant health problems, so the prayers of our members are most appreciated.# His son, Keith, dressed for the color guard and took part in the marking. He also received the membership oath and SAR rosette. Keith is a heavy equipment operator and lives in Calvert City.# Alex and Cody are Frank’s grandsons. They are “long distance” members from Munford (Memphis area), Tennessee. They joined the society in support of their grandfather.# The men of this family descend from Moses Sherman of Massachusetts, a Minuteman who answered the Lexington Alarm and served later in the war in the Massachusetts militia.# Please join us in welcoming these men to the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter!

SERVICE TO VETERANS MEDAL# Every active member of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter is steadily making progress toward the SAR’s prestigious “Service to Veterans Medal.” To receive this award, a Compatriot must accumulate 5,000 “points” for activities, service, and donations to veterans causes. This service includes participation in the various Special Observances in honor of veterans (holidays, grave markings, etc ...), time invested in service projects, visiting with veterans, attending or participating in the funerals of veterans, and donation of money or goods. Subsequent medals are earned for each 3,000 points# We are able to track involvement in our various events and medal presentations, but it is CRITICAL that all members report their activities outside of our normal chapter events.

BEDS FOR VETERANS# We have discovered a very important need among the veterans who complete the structured program at a nearby Veteran’s Center and prepare to move out into their own apartments.  Many of them do not have a bed to sleep on!  This essential piece of furniture can be an overwhelming expense for men who are just getting back out on their own.So some of the men of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter have taken action to help meet this need!  We obtained a simple construction plan and materials list for a single bed.  Such a bed can suffice for someone until they save the funds to buy the bed of their choice.  We built two beds earlier in the year and delivered them to veterans in need.Compatriot Glenn Greenfield, owner of a local construction company in Cadiz, recently managed to secure a lumber donation from a supplier in Hopkinsville to provide enough materials to build two more beds.  Chapter vice-president Steve Mallory cut, sanded, and assembled the beds! They were delivered to the Pennyroyal Veterans Center in mid-November.
