As we ring in the holidays and look forward to 2014, optimism fills the air in Fort Lauderdale

like the familiar sounds of the season. Our leading economic indicators are on the upswing, and all signs point toward a bright future for our City.

Fueling this economic resurgence is our tourism industry which has experienced 46 consecutive months of visitor growth. While tourism is at an all-time high, unemployment is plunging. Our current rate of 5.8% ranks well below Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, and is considerably lower than both the state (7%) and national (7.3%) unemployment rates.

The housing sector is also heating up with the median price of a single-family home in Broward County jumping 31.7% during the past year to $270,000. New construction is booming! Today, we have over 4,000 units either under construction, approved, or in the review process, which represents over $1 billion of private sector investment in our City.

Thanks to our favorable economic conditions, Fort Lauderdale is seeing a new influx of national corporations and regional businesses that are diversifying our economy, expanding our market share, and offering new, well-paying career opportunities for our residents.

As you can see, our progressive economic development initiatives and long-term investment strategies are paying off and are sending a clear signal of strength and confidence about the future of Fort Lauderdale.

My fellow Commissioners and I remain passionate and committed to working with each and every one of you to make Fort Lauderdale an even better place to live, work, play, visit, and raise a family.

Will or Trust? ...Attorney or Computer Program

By Alan Reinfeld of Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A.

R ecently, clients have asked me if they should use computer programs sold by several companies in order to make a will or trust. In response, I have decided to focus this article on

the pros and cons of using these computer programs.

THE BENEFITS: 1. The computer programs to make a will or trust are “cheap”. 2. Computer programs can create a will or trust quite easily and simply, in 5 minutes or less, without going to an attorney’s officeformultiplevisits.THE NEGATIVES: 1. Laws change all the time, and a program may not be up to date with the current and necessary laws in estate planning. Additionally, there are 50 States with 50 different laws on estateplanningandassuch, itisdifficulttoconceiveaproduct that meets every States’ legal criteria. 2. The devil is in the details… everyone has heard this saying before. However, any mistakes in the prepared will or trust will only be discovered when it is too late and likely will invalidate the documents. 3. Before using one of these programs, pay careful attention to the DISCLAIMERS. Generally, they specify that the company is not acting as your attorney and the information provided is not a substitute for the advice of an attorney as well as they cannot apply the law to the facts of your individual circumstances. 4. It is a computer program, not an attorney. An experienced estate planning attorney can think outside the box and boundaries of a program. A computer program, however, islimitedbyaspecificsetofguidelines. Therefore, any specificproblemsorinterestingsolutions, whichmayrequire creative thinking, are limited when using a computer program. 5. These programs do not help you follow the formalities required to have a valid will or trust in Florida. Since the formalities involved in a will or trust can be complicated, there is a chance the document may not be valid. If a will or trust is invalid, the estate can become intestate, which means that your assets or income may be distributed to persons other than those persons you wanted to distribute originally in your will or trust. 6. Sometimes estate planning requires the production of a trust, instead of a will for various reasons, as discussed in previous articles. A program will not be able to provide the individualized specialization you may require. 7. A simple Will can start at a low price of $125.00. In the end, there is no substitute to having an experience attorney review and create your estate planning documents. As only an attorney, not a computer program, can provide you with legal advice and come up with ways to make your wishes a legal reality when the time comes. The Law Offices of Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A. has offices in Coral Springs, Plantation, Fort Lauderdale. Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A. is a full-serviced law firm specializing in a variety of fields such as Probate and Trust Administration, Estate Planning (Wills and Trusts), Business/Commercial Law, Family Law, Real Estate Law, and Landlord/Tenant Law. Recycling Perks Continues In Deerfield Beach

The City of Deerfield Beach remains committed to its recycling efforts.

In an effort to raise awareness on the value of recycling, the City of Deerfield Beach and the popular incentive based recycling program, Recycling Perks is giving away an iPad Mini.

Throughout the month of December, residents who are registered for the Recycling Perks program will automatically be entered for a chance to win an iPad Mini every time they redeem rewards online at RecyclingPerks.com. The Recycling Perks program is free for residents to use and is part of the City’s curbside recycling program.

Introduced to the residents of Deerfield Beach in October 2012, Recycling Perks incentivizes recycling for the residents of Deerfield Beach. Every time a resident recycles using their “all-in” recycling carts, points are awarded to the resident’s Recycling Perks account. Points can be redeemed for rewards or discounts from

participating local businesses.“By offering this campaign to

residents, we hope to further enhance participation in the recycling and rewards program. The more the City of Deerfield Beach recycles, the more money it saves.” says Bill Dempsey, President of Recycling Perks.

Residents of Deerfield Beach who are not currently signed up for the Recycling Perks program can register for a free account at RecyclingPerks.com.

Recycling Perks is a rewards company incentivizing and providing savings by encouraging recycling in local communities throughout Florida, Georgia, and Virginia.

Launched in spring 2011, Recycling Perks is an incentive program that promotes participation in curbside recycling and is currently available to approximately 400,000 households. Recycling Perks strives to improve household recycling efforts, reduce waste, and promote local businesses by offering great savings and exclusive deals that reward recyclers. Simply put: You recycle, We Reward!

Oakland Park Mayor By John Adornato III

Oakland Park Farmers Market Offers a Bounty of Bargains

On a weekend morning, you can probably drive 15 minutes from anywhereinBrowardCountyandfind

a Farmers Market. But on a weekday… during the drive home from work… your opportunities to stop and pick up fresh produce and culinary specialties was limited for the most part to larger supermarket chains… until now that is. Oakland Park started its weekly Farmers Market November 5 and it takes place every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the southwest corner of North Dixie Highway and NE 38 Street. The convenient location provides for plenty of free on-site parking so you never need to worry about carrying heavy bags of produce too far. Our City’s Parks and Leisure Service Department is working with the Oakland Park-based Urban Farming Institute to serve local consumers interested in farm fresh produce and artisan goods in the heart of the emerging Oakland Park Culinary Arts District. We are excited that our Farmers Market offers an appetizing array of fresh organic produce, prepared foods to take home for dinner, and culinary specialties that reflectthe rich cultural and ethnic diversity of our community. South Florida’s climate allows some of our small family farms to produce many of the tropical fruits and vegetables so prized in other countries, but because the supply is often limitedtoalocalareayouwillneverfindthemin a supermarket. AtourFarmersMarket, youcanfindthesmall bananas so popular in Thailand and even fresh pomelos which look like giant grapefruits, but have a much different/sweeter taste. I almost needed a shopping cart instead of my Oakland Park recycle bag during my visits to the Farmers Market. Every vendor offers something pleasing to the eye and the palate with many items impossible to resist after enjoying a complimentary tasting from the personstaffingthebooth.

There is not enough room in this column to give props to every vendor or item, but in addition to the fresh fruits and vegetables, youwillfindgourmethummus,pâté,smokedfish, honey andmyriad spices and blendedseasoning mixtures available in small or bulk quantity. We even have vendors specializing in homemade dog treats, gluten-free baked goods and traditional Spanish paella de marisco served to enjoy at the picnic tables or as a take-home dinner treat. Adults should not be surprised if they

are offered a free tasting from a local wine distributor or from the nearby Funky Buddha craft brewery to go along with their paella, Indian curry, or Filipino adobo that are available at our Farmers Market. Shoppers and diners will also be able to enjoy livemusical entertainment the firstTuesday of the month and different food trucks may also be on-site offering their popular specialties. One of the signature features of Oakland Park’s Farmers Market is our monthly “Farm toChefShowcase”presentedthefirstTuesdayeach month at 5:30 p.m. featuring interactive cooking clinics with some of the top chefs in our community. The 90-minute cooking demonstrations culminate with free tasting samples from all three courses and handy recipe cards. If your hands are too full to pick up the recipe cards, you can visit www.opculinaryarts.com or log on to www.Facebook.com/OPCRA to view the recipes, learn more about the chefs and other upcoming events and activities in Oakland Park’s downtown Culinary Arts District. We were all impressed with Chef Lenore Nolan-Ryan of Lenore Nolan-Ryan Cooking SchoolandCateringwhoconductedthefirstFarm to Chef Showcase with Executive Chef Giovanni Sposato from D’Angelo Pizza, Wine Bar & Tapas. I felt like I was surrounded by culinary royalty when they invited me to join them on the elevated stage set up in front of the audience seating. We invite and encourage everyone to please visit our Oakland Park Farmers Market each Tuesday and if you happen to see me, please stop and say hello and let me know what you think of our tasteful destination. To learn more about the Oakland Park Farmers Market, please call the City’s Parks and Leisure Services Department at 954-630-4500 or the Urban Farmer’s Jon Albee at 954-696-9577. Bon Appetit!

Live on the Intracoastal? Decorate your home by December 6 for a chance to win prizes during the 51st Annual Greater Pompano Beach Boat Parade Shore Decorating contest. Each year, this annual parade winds along the Intracoastal from Pompano Beach north to Hillsboro Blvd. in Deerfield Beach and part of the fun is the decorated homes along the way. The parade is December 8, starting at 5:30 p.m. but shoreline judging is Friday, December 6. Join the fun by decorating your home. Call 954-941-2940 to enter or for more details.

This year’s event is already larger than year’s past.

“For this year’s boat parade

we are expecting about 70 boaters, which is almost 20 more than last year,” said Dr. Brian Rask, co-chair. “The great thing about the Pompano Beach Boat Parade is that it is free and open to all boaters. There are no requirements on the amount of lights you need on your boat and there is no theme that you have to follow. It is all about having fun with family and friends over the holidays.”

The Pompano Beach Boat Parade is the only free parade that has great Captain’s and Awards parties, gives out cash awards, gift cards and many great prizes, provides a lot of recognition for its sponsors, and supports local charities.

For information or to learn how to participate, please contact the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce at 954-941-2940.

Visitors coming to Pompano Beach now have a place to learn about the great activities in and around the City. The Pompano Chamber is extending its office hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday through April 15th to assist tourists in navigating the area.

With all the changes taking place, we thought this was a great opportunity to help visitors to find all the great things Pompano Beach has to offer. The Chamber is staffing our building on the weekends so that people can find hotels, restaurants, local attractions and more. Not everyone is here Monday through Friday and we thought this was a great opportunity to showcase what Pompano has to offer. This is also a resource for locals to learn more about their City! The South Florida community once again came together to join inthefightagainstbreastcancer.

For the seventh year, Glam-A-THON™ inspired both men and women to bring awareness and raise funds for breast cancer.

The turnout for the events this year was absolutely amazing, according to event organizers. At the Lipstick Lounge held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino inside Passion Nightclub, hundreds of the most fabulous movers and shakers joined together to taste, try and experience the best that South Florida has to offer. The following week at the Glam Doll Strut in downtown Fort lauderdale, hundreds of divas, supporters and doggies strutted for a celebrity judges’ panel to raise funds for the cause.

“The beauty of Glam-A-THON™ is the amazing strength of our teams, sponsors, supporters and our dynamic Glam Board to provide much needed funding for local women affected by this terrible disease,” says Tammy Gail, founder and nine-year breast cancer survivor.

Last year, Glam-A-THON™ raised over $148,000. All funds raised through Glam-A-THON™benefittheBrowardHealth Foundation, the fundraising arm of Broward Health and the Lisa

Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. Assistance is given to underinsured and uninsured women in the South Florida area to receive life saving, early diagnostic testing and mammograms, while those battling breast cancer receive financialhelp, rides to and from treatment and medibras for after surgery. The Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund was founded in 2003 by Coral Springs Mayor Vincent Boccard and his wife Terry in support of Vincent’s sister Lisa and her fightwithbreast cancer. The Boccard’s joined forces with Broward Health Coral Springs Women’s Diagnostic & Wellness Center. The mission of the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund is to provide funding for care that may otherwise be unattainable, for the women in our community to obtain free screening mammograms.

Glam-A-THON™,a501(c)3nonprofitorganization, is a sustainable, dynamic breast cancer charity dedicated to helping families, friends and neighbors in South Florida. They differentiate their efforts with style, sass, and glamorous heels. The goal is to take the fear out of breast cancer and mobilize women to make a difference in their community.

Glam-A-THON was founded 7 years ago by President and breast cancer survivor Tammy Gail. She along with her GlamBoardheldthefirstGlamDollStrutand raised $10,000. Since then, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised,

helping hundreds of women in our South Florida community.

Glam-A-THON embraces individuality and boasts a fierceindependence that distinguishes them from many other charitable causes. Their divas come in all shapes, colors and shoe sizes but the driving force that they all have in common is their point of differentiation. When thousands of Glam-A-THON divas mobilize to make a difference in their community the magic begins. Nowhere in history has there been a Glam Revolution until now! The goal is to bring their mission to a national arena. Each year, the Glam-A-THON army of divas will polish their Prada’s and mend their Manolos in a concerted effort to Kiss Breast Cancer Goodbye – one fabulous high-heeled step at a time.

For 18 years, the mission of Gateway Community Outreach has been to eradicate homelessness by providing services to stabilize the family unit economically while helping them become self-sufficient.Thisgoalcontinues throughout the holiday season through their Special Touch program, which is designed to meet the extra needs of our community’s most needy families during this time of year.

During the month of December, Gateway Community Outreach will deliver a holiday meal with the trimmings, unwrapped toys for toddlers to teenagers, wrapping supplies, gift cards and personal hygiene products to local families. The community is also treated to

holiday festivities. Each year, Gateway has a holiday party and treats the parents and caregivers to food, refreshments, and they can pick out the toys they want to give to their children along with wrapping

supplies. Since the need is

growing again this year, the organization is seeking the help of residents to donate toys, gift cards and cash donations for area families. They are asking for donations of unwrapped toys for children from 6 months to 12 years old, and requesting Walmart

or Target gift cards for teens, ages 13 to 17.

“We are looking for anyone who would like to

donate whether it be an unwrapped toy, canned goods, monetary donations or donating their time as a volunteer,” said Carol Ray, President and CEO of Gateway Community Outreach.

Last year, they were able to make the holidays special for approximately 500 children. The staff at Gateway hopes to exceed that goal this year.

“Everyone is aware of the economy, and the need is growing. Many parents and individuals are struggling. We want them to be able to provide toys for their children this holiday season,” said Ray.

Gateway Community Outreach is located at 291 SE 1st Terrace, Deerfield Beach,

33441. You can drop off unwrapped toys anytime. For more information, call

Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale was recently home to a spectacular traveling

exhibit. The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Squadron hosted a free RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit sponsored by JM Family Enterprises and Stonegate Bank at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale. Students enrolled in afterschool programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County and Urban League of Broward County were able to experience this unique exhibit at the local school. The educational exhibit featured a 35-seat movie theater housed in a semi-rig and provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about the inspiring story of the Tuskegee Airmen. The exhibit presented a screening of a short original movie, “RISE ABOVE,” which focuses on the obstacles faced byAmerica’sfirstblackmilitarypilotsand their support personnel, known today as the Tuskegee Airmen, as they worked toward their goal of

becoming U.S. Army Air Corps pilots in the early 1940s. “The exhibit is truly a one-of-a-kind adventure similar to something you would experience at Disneyland,” said Brad Lang, CAF Red Tail Squadron Leader, adding, “The overall message is about rising above to reach your potential no matter your circumstances and the message resonates with all ages because of the unique and interactive way it is told. This was truly a one-of-a-kind experience.” Students who visited the RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit as part of a school or educational outreach program also received an inspirational dog tag with the six guiding principles of the CAF Red Tail Squadron’s Rise Above educational program. These principles reflecthowtheTuskegeeAirmenroseabove all of the obstacles they faced in ordertoflyandfightforAmerica.Thedog tags read: Aim High; Believe in Yourself; Use Your Brain; Never Quit; Be Ready to Go; and Expect To Win.

On-Line Real Estate Search

With public access to Real Estate listings via the Internet many

buyers in this market conduct research on their own, and while a lot of information can be discovered on-line, the most essential details are often left out. Knowing how to decipher a Real Estate listing and what data to factor into your search may seem as easy at 1,2,3 – “I want 4 bedrooms, 3 baths…” – but in reality searching for the right home can be more of an algebra problem then simple math. Take these factors into your next home search and you just may master the equation.

Active, Pending, Backup? Oh My!

The number one issue I see, hear and read about regarding on-line Real Estate search is that a large portion of homes of interest are no longer on the market when

requests to view are made. No one likes misleading information and this can often feel that way to prospective buyers. As many of the popular Real Estate search sites don’t show current “status”, a buyer is left with no other opinion then ‘here’s a great home for sale’. In actuality however, the home is no longer on the market or has been sold months ago! As true up to date information of status is generally reserved for Realtors, it’s a good idea to check the status with your agent prior to mentally placing furniture in your new home. An active status sale is on market with no current offers, pending means a contract has been executed and the home will close pending inspections or other factors necessary, and a backup status listing simply means while a contract has been executed the seller will consider back up offers shall the current contract become void or cancelled. Understanding these points and jargon is step one when searching on line.

Important Financial FactorsPerfect pictures and a

wonderful description can make anyone excited about a home, but to fully protect yourself and be sure you are within budget you need to put other factors into play. As many homebuyers will be purchasing with a mortgage, monthly fees can often drive or end a home purchase transaction. Many varying costs of ownership are often not listed on the popular search sites. Fees like HOA dues, taxes, additional insurance necessary and others are crucial elements to be aware

of. An exorbitant HOA fee or high tax rate can quickly put a home you thought affordable out of your price range. To verify additional fees that you may not be aware of be sure to work with a Real Estate agent or ask the listing agent directly. Planning results in protection, do your work and guarantee a successful sale.

Beware the bait and switch! Like all forms of

marketing, some is ethical and honest while others are misleading and false. Forum and blog sites that advertise Real Estate often lean to the latter. Unethical agents have and will advertise properties that have already been sold, or at unapproved prices with hopes of landing a buyer call on the false advertising. This is commonly referred to as the ‘bait and switch’. To avoid being baited try to stay away from forum or blog like sites offering Real Estate for sale. As at all times, your best bet is to work with a Realtor, but if searching on your own be sure to conduct your research on a viable and ethical site.

Keeping these simple ideas in mind will save you time, frustration and possibly money! If in need of true data always consult a licensed Realtor, they are and always will be your best source.

As you enter the doors of Beach Holistic Healthcare, the astonishing world of

chiropractic and holistic healing embraces you like a hug from your grandmother. Chiropractic Physician Dr. Alfredo Cajar, wearing a charming smile and a talented grasp on his profession, is certain to overwhelm you with his knowledge and an astute sense of awareness of your problems.

Myself, and two of my co-workers visited Dr. Cajar’s office last week. My associate was suffering from back pain so severe that standing erect was a major chore. Dr. Cajar initially place him on a table lying face down. An Electric Muscle Stimulator was placed on his lower back, sending electric pulses throughout his lower back, adjusting him while deciphering the problem area. He “de-stressed” him while the Stimulator was in

place. Massaging his upper back with the Vibracussor, which breaks down scar tissue using percussion, Dr. Cajar immediately located the problem area. He placed a cushion under him and re-set his hips by slowly twisting his torso, resulting in a substantial reduction in pain. Using a Mechanical Hand Adjuster and hand-held “Cold Laser”, to complete the process, my friend arose from the table pain free and smiling.

My other co-worker went through a different exam, which proved to be just as productive. By raising her right arm, visually examining her extremities, and feeling certain areas of her back while applying pressure, Dr. Cajar was able to determine her problem, and recommend how to handle her condition. Skepticism plays a major role in everyone’s life, but in these two cases, “seeing is believing”!

Beach Holistic Healthcare treats and helps individuals with nutrition, chiropractic, weight loss,

massage therapy, and blood & lab testing. If you’re not enjoying good health, you’re not enjoying life. Your brain and nervous system control the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body. A properly working body is the key to good health. Dr. Cajar does not only make your body well, he keeps it “fine-tuned” and working properly. Just as your car requires regular maintenance, so does the human body. Pain and physical discomfort demand attention. Common sense dictates to us that we need to address these aches and pains immediately.

Holistic healing addresses all parts of an individual and not just the physical aspects of a person where manifested illnesses are not apparent. Holistic healing is not just intended to serve as a band-aid, or a “one time fix. It is an ongoing journey of discovery in search of

answers, and ultimately, living better, and feeling healthier, while striving for wholeness. It addresses all parts of a person’s

life ….. physical healing, mental health and

wellness, emotional well-being, and spiritual beliefs

and values are considered. Dr. Cajar has mastered his

profession and can help individuals with chiropractic needs and holistic medicine. Beach Holistic Healthcare is located at 1304 East Atlantic Boulevard, Suite C, in Pompano Beach. Office hours are Monday through Thursday (9:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 3:00 to 7:00PM). You can call Dr. Cajar at 954-796-2611, fax him at 954-573-1695, or email [email protected]. Visit Dr. Cajar and receive a Nutritional Evaluation, or adjustment for only $30.00.

Many individuals argue politics and religion on a daily basis. People awake in the morning to a hot cup

of freshly brewed coffee, a newspaper full of political and religious stories, and television commentary laden with additional political dealings. Everyone has different beliefs on many levels. If everyone liked chocolate ice cream, Baskin and Robbins, with their “31 Flavors”, would be out of luck.

The only true American thing to argue about, or should I say disagree on, is sports! All males relish delivering their view on the greatest players, teams, catches, or any controversial issue in any of the major sports. Controversy keeps sports in our daily conversations, especially comparing today’s athletes to players from my generation and before. It’s Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays versus Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun. The “clean” athlete, that set their records on hotdogs, alcohol, clean living (Mays and Aaron), and pure talent, against the “contaminated” players that juiced their way to breaking not only records, but the hearts of their adoring fans.

While wondering, “What ever became of David Clyde”, here are my humble opinions as to those I consider the best athletes at certain “talents” in the major sports ……. Cheaters not included.

GREATEST RUNNING BACK IN

NFL HISTORY ….. Jim Brown. Retired at the age of 29 as the leading rusher in the Nation Football League. Highest yards gained per carry (5.2) than any other running back in the HOF. He never missed a game, or took himself out after a long run, and never ran out of bounds to avoid contact. When it was third and two, the opposing defense, and every person in attendance at the game, knew number 32 was getting the ball ….. and they still couldn’t stop him!

GREATEST MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER ….. Being a Mickey Mantle fan, this one stings a little ….. Willie Mays. There may have been better hitters, better outfielders, and better runners, but Willie did all of it better than anyone!

GREATEST MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL “PURE” HITTER ….. Ted Williams. Nothing else has to be said concerning this selection.

GREATEST “THROWING” QUARTERBACK IN NFL HISTORY ….. Tom Brady. I have never witnessed an “average quarterback at best” come out of college, and mature into the type of quarterback he has become. He possesses the finest mechanics of anyone at the position since Joe Namath.

GREATEST ALL-AROUND NBA PLAYER ….. Michael Jordan. It’s tough to go against this choice.

GREATEST “SHOWMAN” IN NBA HISTORY ….. “Pistol” Pete Maravich. This guy was in a class by himself. He was a pure magician with a basketball.

GREATEST HOCKEY PLAYER ….. Wayne Gretzky. Hard to select someone better than “The Great One”.

GREATEST NFL RECEIVER ….. Jerry Rice. Great receivers are a dime a dozen in professional football, but this

wide-out separated himself from all of the competition.

GREATEST NFL GAME OF ALL-TIME ….. 1959 Championship Game between the New York Giants and Baltimore Colts. This one, single game showcased the NFL with the first ever over-time game.

GREATEST GOLFER OF ALL TIME ….. Jack Nicklaus. This gentleman has 18 Major victories, and 19 second places finishes in a span of 25 years. He was humble in victory, and gracious in defeat. Not a bad person for anyone’s children, and grandchildren, to emulate on a golf course.

GREATEST MALE TENNIS PLAYER ….. Roger Federer. Rafael Nadal is a very close second.

GREATEST FEMALE TENNIS PLAYER ….. Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams. I would hate to have to live on the difference between these two great players.

GREATEST SOCCER PLAYER ….. Pele. He brought notoriety to the sport, creating legends of fans (Americans) that would have never watched a game of “futbol” in the United States if not for him.

GREATEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL COACH ….. Paul W. Bryant. *

GREATEST PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL COACH ….. Vince Lombardi. *

*Both of these selections need no further comments.

Well, that’s my list, and I’m sticking to it. The strength of my opinions, hopefully, does not exceed my knowledge on the subject. My opinions are my symptoms. Disagreements on any, or all of the above selections, are welcome. It’s sports ….. the paramount thing to disagree about!

There’s nothing better than hearing men, and ladies

for that matter, argue about their favorite college football team and how the BCS should have their team ranked higher in the polls. For the past 15 years, the Bowl Championship Series has reigned supreme in the selection of ranking teams, and dictating their positions, and in some cases, the bowl games they participate in. All this ends next season …… the BCS format will be replaced by the College Football Playoff in 2014. Plans are still being ironed out, but basically, the top 4 teams in the rankings will compete in a playoff format to determine the National Champions. College football is the only inter-collegiate sport that does not have a “playoff” system in place.

The BCS, whether applauded or criticized, was the best formula used since the inception of the “rankings polls”. Formerly, the UPI Poll (coaches) and the AP Poll (sports writers), were the governing masters of the rankings. These two extremely different polls were so incredibly diverse, that on various occasions, named different teams

“National Champions”. The Coaches Poll (UPI) is sprinkled with coaches that have prejudices and distastes for certain colleges, or coaches, that flaw their votes. The Associated Press (sports writers) is just absurd. This group is composed mostly of individuals that have never played the game, and probably have only worn an athletic supporter to go swimming, and that’s in waist-deep water. These characters know as much about football as I know about nuclear physics.

Case in point ….. In 1966, Alabama was coming off consecutive National Championships, looking for three in a row. This fete had never been accomplished. The team was ranked pre-season No. 1 in both polls. That season, Alabama went undefeated, and buried a great Nebraska team 34-7 in the Sugar Bowl. For their efforts, the Crimson Tide finished THIRD behind Notre Dame and Michigan State. The Irish and Spartans played against one another during the regular season and played to a 10-10 tie. To add insult to injury, neither team engaged in a bowl game that year.

The UPI and AP split their vote, and Alabama was left out in the cold. Oh well, kiss that ring good-bye ……..

Then there’s the Computer Rankings ….. Now you’re insulting my intelligence. A computer knows only the information that someone feeds it. Injuries, “team letdowns”, complications a certain star athlete is going through, girlfriend problems, school grades or exams, trends, and numerous other difficulties are never taken into consideration.

NO system will ever be without flaw, but I think I have the perfect solution to this timeless dilemma. This will definitely never happen in my lifetime, but it makes the most sense of all. In my humble opinion, there is only one group of individuals that should be the determining factor in the selection of the college rankings ……. the Las Vegas odds makers. Think about it for a second. These guys know more about the teams than the coaches do. It’s their livelihood. It’s their business to know EVERYTHING about the players, coaches,

injuries, and overall insight regarding every team in the nation. They know more about the teams, and certainly in most cases, have a better perception about the team than the head coaches do. The bookies are the “Masters of the Football Domain”.

Somewhere, Jimmy ”The Greek” Snyder has a smile on his ugly face as wide as the Mississippi River. He and I discussed this exact thing over dinner one Saturday night long ago in New Orleans before a Saints’ game. He loved the notion, but the NCAA and it’s distain for gambling, plus the ramifications it would bring concerning organized crime and “point shaving”, would definitely kill the idea. He was the best. He gave me “7 to 1 odds” this would never come to pass. He died before I could “officially” make the bet. Thanks for picking up the dinner check. By the way, Jimmy, did the odds go up, or down, after all these years with everything that’s happened in sports?

obert Borowski, Alexandra, marketing coordinator and

Kamy, project & networking coordinator spent Oct. 6 with a few thousand others walking or jogging along the sand in Deerfield Beach as part of the 17th Annual Dunn’s Run.

The event, sponsored by J.R. Dunn Jewelers, raises funds for the Broward County Boys and Girls Clubs.

Borowski, president of Allied Roofing, has made the run before, but for Alex and Kamy, it was the first time.

Pitching in to help this community is a natural for Borowski. This business owner shares his success with others who need a little help.

When Rebuilding Together Broward, a non profit volunteer group, approached Borowski, he stepped right up to the plate to answer Vandilla Johnson’s plea for help.

Johnson, a 47-year old widow who is the court appointed caretaker to four grandchildren, has lived in her Fort Lauderdale home for 14 years. That home was in desperate need of a

new roof and many interior repairs due to the leaking roof.

In fact, keeping custody of her grandchildren was hinging on roof repairs.

Said Johnson after her roof was repaired, “I thank God for Allied Roofing for giving me a new roof. Every day I come home from work and I see the transformation. It’s almost done now except for the shingles. It’s just beautiful. I’m in tears. I know there is a God.”

A Rebuilding Together Broward official explains, “Our greatest need is for roofers and because reroofing is such an expensive process we have difficulty in filling that need. In the case of Ms. Johnson, Allied Roofing has really come through for us.”About Borowski

Robert Borowski came from Poland to South Florida right after Hurricane Andrew and stayed for 21 years building a reputation along the way for being one of the most reliable and knowledgeable roofing contractors in the area.

He did this by becoming skilled at applying all roofing materials – metal,

tile and shingle – and by hiring craftsmen with the old- school skills of coppersmithing. “I have a lot of employees from Europe where this trade is a tradition,” Borowski said, adding “We are one of the few companies capable of installing all roofing products.”

He started Allied Roofing in Pompano Beach and moved to a larger Fort Lauderdale location 11 years ago. He is one of the few roofers who produces his own sheet metal panels which gives him much-needed product control.

His work is visible all over north Broward including at The First Presbyterian Church of Pompano Beach, JB’s restaurant on the beach in Deerfield and the Hillsboro Club on the Hillsboro Mile.

The Club with its steeply pitched roof and the constant offshore winds was one of his most challenging jobs, Borowski

said. In addition, he had to work around the summer guests.

And when JB’s expanded 10 years ago, the Allied crew redid the roof with material guaranteed to withstand the effects of salt and sand for 25 years.

In fact, warranties on workmanship and materials are something all customers should insist on Borowski said.

Believing that his customers should be fully informed, Borowski presents them with 20 questions that give them an opportunity to compare contracts.

“We try to show our customers all their options. An educated consumer is a more satisfied one.”

The Allied website, alliedroofingfl.com also contains information important to potential customers.

Those who want to know what the replacement of a roof entails, should watch movies of Allied’s latest jobs on YouTube.

A strong supporter of community events, he is a member of several chambers of commerce.

Borowski contributes to the Pompano Beach Yuletide Parade, Deerfield Beach Founders’ Days’ fireworks and does charitable work for his church and professional associations such as Rebuilding Together Broward. About Allied Roofing

Allied also installs solar panels, hot water panels and rainwater harvest systems.

Borowski says there is nothing magical about his success. He estimates that 80 percent of his business is from referrals. “Good employees give good service and the result is good work,” he says.

R“I have a lot of employees from Europe where this trade is a tradition.”

Yes, they did! Alex, Robert Borowski and Kamy make it to the 5K Dunn’s Run finish, and they are still smiling. Employees of Allied Roofing, are following a long time company tradition of participating in community events. The Dunn’s Run is one of the benefactors of Broward County Boys and Girls Clubs These clubs offer after school care, homework tutoring, sports and other activities for local students. Is Diagnostic Testing Really That Accurate?

It seems every time a client comes for help, a common complaint is that their veterinarian has run numerous tests,

prescribed treatments and the works. Symptoms vanish for a while only to return, sometimes with even more problems. End result - it may actually be the tests!Look at how the system works. You visit the vet, they draw blood and give you medication based on the symptom. The blood is sent to an off-site laboratory to be analyzed, with the results in a few days. The blood test reveals a limited breakdown of blood chemistry with very broad ranges. These broad parameters cannot distinguish what is normal or abnormal because of the restricted information provided. An example, results can vary because of diet. Blood chemistry can vary greatly between a dog eating kibble and fresh food. Unless a nutritional evaluation is also provided, the results can be greatly skewed.

A second component overlooked is the physiological condition of the animal. If the pet is stressed, excited, or even had a very recent meal, results can again be skewed.Another factor is the limitation of these tests. They don’t show mostnutritionalchallenges, pathogens, orspecificproblems. An example, we may show an increase in white blood cells that could indicate anything from infections to cancers and a vast array of other challenges which can be misleading.Another question that needs to be addressed is the chemical values compared to previous tests, looking for changes and variations. Let’s say multiple tests show “normal” values but have gone from a low normal to a high normal. Without a proper comparison, we wouldn’t see a changing situation. We must understand that blood tests are an invasive procedure and while we view them as generally safe, side effects can occur. The same concerns are present with other diagnostic procedures such as x-rays, MRI, and various scans. While these procedures can be tools for specific challenges, theyshould not be considered routine. For example, we all know

the dangers of x-rays, yet most of the time, veterinarians do not consider the amount of previous x-rays that your pet has already been exposed to. The point is this, before agreeing to a full work-up of testing, ask what they are looking for and how the test can help in finding a conclusion. Also be sure to consider thepossible challenges that this test could cause. We leave you with many more questions that should be addressed and that’s the way we see it.
