The goal of this seminar is to support faculty to develop teaching strategies that help students connect theoretical and conceptual material to real world environments. These connections serve as bridges between liberal arts education and professional environments. Participants will develop or substantially revise a course so that the content prepares students for professional education or careers. This seminar is part of the Five College Public Policy Initiative's Curriculum Bridging Project, directed by Associate Professor Brenda Bushouse (political science and public policy) and is funded by Five Colleges, Inc., and the Andrew W. Springfield Economic Development Project Featured in Federal Reserve Magazine The Wellspring Collaborative, the innovative Springfield economic development codirected by lecturer Fred Rose (public policy), is featured in the most recent issue of Communities & Banking,a quarterly publication put out by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The article highlights how Wellspring is tapping into the purchasing power of local anchor institutions such as hospitals and colleges in order to create cooperatively owned forprofit companies that employ local residents. "Orange is the New Black" Event Highlights Prison Reform Issues, Concludes Residency Series Last month the Center for Public Policy and Administration (CPPA) cohosted a conversation between Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison, and Tina Reynolds, the final Five College Social Justice Practitioner inResidence. In front of a packed auditorium at the Commonwealth Honors College, the women talked about their experiences in prison; working to reform the United States' criminal justice system; and the new Netflix series based on Kerman's memoir. Students Participatory Research Class to Host Reception Showcasing Findings Students in the Participatory Visual and Digital Research in Community Based Learning course will contribute to a reception on Thursday, Dec. 12, highlighting the results from their handson work in Springfield, Mass., this semester. was part of a national public engagement projectcalled Futurescape City Tours. Residents fromSpringfield and five other cities across the countryexplored how new technologies might change publicspaces and services in the near future. The projectwas funded by the National Science Foundation, andthe UMass course was made possible thanks to theScience, Technology and Society Initiative and theLoka Institute for Science and Technology at Arizona

State University. The reception is free and open to the public. UMass DesignCenter, 3 Elm St., Springfield, 5:30­8:30 p.m.

Nonprofit Program Management Class Presents FinalReports to Clients Public policy graduate students this weekpresented their findings from the hands­onconsulting projects they conducted thissemester in Nonprofit ProgramManagement, taught by AssociateProfessor Brenda Bushouse (politicalscience and public policy). The 13 studentconsultants conducted in­depth analysis offour local nonprofit organizations' programofferings, revenue sources and leadershipstructure. For the final presentations, the teams explained their processesand recommendations to representatives from Amherst Ballet, Clinical &Support Options, Montague Catholic Social Ministries and the NortheastSustainable Energy Association.

GIS Students Present Semester's ProjectsLast week students in Introduction to GeographicInformation Systems, taught by AssociateProfessor Charles Schweik (environmentalconservation and public policy), presented their finalprojects during a public poster session in theIntegrated Sciences Building. Five CPPA studentsparticipated in the day­long affair. The projectsanalyzed geographical data having to do witheverything from managing invasive water chestnutsin western Massachusetts to examining a proposedstudent housing unit in North Amherst.

Misra Wades into Debate About FLOTUS FeminismProfessor Joya Misra (sociology and public policy)was quoted in a recent Politico article that weighed inon an ongoing debate about Michelle Obama'sfeminist credentials. Critics of the first lady claim thatMichelle Obama's work on childhood health andnutrition issues suggests she is not committed toclassic feminist issues such as the equal access toeducation and career advancement. But Misra andothers place the first lady's policy work within acontext that explains how much our nationundervalues caregiving and motherhood.

Mednicoff Delivers Paper at Afro­Middle East CentreConference

Last month Assistant Professor David Mednicoff(public policy) delivered a paper at a conferenceconvened by the Afro­Middle East Centre in Pretoria,South Africa. The conference, titled "In WhoseInterests: Exploring Middle East Involvement inAfrica," was the first major event in Africa to engageleading African, Middle Eastern and Westernresearchers in interdisciplinary policy analysis of thegrowth and nature of the role of the Middle East inAfrican societies. Mednicoff's paper, researched with

help from Joanna Springer (MPPA '14), looked at the relation of Qatar to

Bushouse Convenes Sessions at International NonprofitConferenceAssociate Professor Brenda Bushouse (politicalscience and public policy) helped organize, andpresented multiple sessions during, last month'sannual conference of the Association for Researchon Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action(ARNOVA). She co­organized a panel of papersexploring Elinor and Vincent Ostrom's contributions tothe study of nonprofit organizations and voluntaryaction, co­chaired a panel titled "Building a Career inAcademia," and presented in a session aboutintegrating community­based education into the classroom. In her capacityas president of the Theories, Issues and Boundaries section of ARNOVA,Bushouse co­organized an array of colloquies and section activities.ARNOVA is an international association that connects scholars, teachersand practice leaders interested in research on nonprofit organizations,voluntary action, philanthropy and civil society.

Fountain Presents at Urban ForumEarlier this month Professor Jane Fountain (politicalscience and public policy) participated in a panelduring the 2013 Urban Forum at the University ofIllinois at Chicago. During the session, titled "TuningIn: How can Technology Help Unite the Governmentwith its People?" Fountain presented a white paperexploring how technology can and is affectinggovernment services and the public's engagement inthe political process. The Urban Forum is an annualgathering that aims to advance the dialogue about the

future of urban communities.

Josh Geyer (MPPA '10) has spent the last two years working as the projectmanager overseeing the construction of a collaborative website by the U.S.departments of Housing and Urban Development and Transportation. TheLocation Affordability Portal launched in November and provides data andresources that should "help consumers, policymakers and developers makemore informed decisions about where to live, work and invest." Alan Dallmann (MPPA '13) recently began a new job as the agencyresource coordinator at the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. Krista Solie (MPPA '13) is now a management analyst for the City of SanAntonio, working on the Pre­K for SA initiative that aims to provide high­quality pre­kindergarten for all of the city's four­year­olds.
