Nielson Wins Unlimited-Jeffery Wins Varmint at VisaliaThe last match of the shooting season in Visalia, California was a two day unlimited five-shot event called the Visalia Invitational shot on Labor Day weekend. This year a two day heavy varmint match was added for the shooters who did not shoot an unlimit-ed rifle. The weather for the weekend was cooler than usual with tempera-tures in the eighties on Saturday and in the low nineties on Sunday, which was appreciated by the twenty three shooters who attended the match.

On day one of the unlimited class, the 100-yard match was won by Joe Stanovich with a .1488 aggregate. The small group was a .080 screamer by Gary Ocock. Don Nielson won the 200-yard match with a nice .1347 ag-gregate. Don also won the small group trophy with a .128 screamer. Gary Ocock won the Day 1 Grand Aggregate first place trophy with a .1840 aggre-gate.

The wind picked up a little on day two of the Unlimited competition. Tom Price won the 100-yard match first place trophy with a .1526 aggregate. The small group trophy went to David Woodward with a .1903 agg. The small group trophy was awarded again to Joe Stanovich with a .174 screamer. Joe had a great day of shooting and won the first place grand aggregate with a .1778.

The Unlimited two-gun first place tro-phy and the Visalia Invitational trav-eling trophy was won by Don Nielson. Don finished with a .1910 two day aggregate for the win, Gary Ocock

placed second with a .1932 aggregate.Starting off the Heavy Varmint class match, Steve Epstein won the 1st day 100-yard match with a .2528 aggre-gate. The small group award went to Norm Jeffery with a .153. Norm was on a roll and won the 200-yard match shooting a .2570 and the small group trophy also with a .290. Norm finished with a .2619 to win the Heavy Varmint Day-1 grand aggregate first place tro-phy.

Continuing his winning streak, Norm Jeffery won the Day-2 heavy varmint 100-yard match with a .2404 agg. Ev-eret Smith won the small group trophy shooting a .116. The 200-yard match was also won by Everet Smith with a .2981 aggregate for the first place trophy. Ron Christiansen shot a .252 to win the small group trophy. Norm Jeffery was the winner of the grand aggregate first place trophy again with a .2747 agg. After placing first in both heavy varmint grands, the two-gun trophy was Norm Jeffery’s claim with a .2683 aggregate. Everet Smith won second place with a .2848.

Don Nielson, winner of the 2012 Visalia Invitational match.

It appears the trophy is so large he’s struggling to hold it in the picture. It should look mighty fine on the mantle, that is providing you still

have room. Don’s been having quite a good run this year.

Congratulations, Pumpkin.

Beauty or Beast? The salesman from the used gun department said that it was a beauty. In fact, is it a beauty or a beast?

The Hawkeye knows!

NEW! Video capabilitystarting at $995.

Hawkeye® Borescopes inspect firearms for defects that affect accuracy. Image rotation allows 360º examination of lands and grooves with the clarity of a medical endoscope. Adjustable Focus $895, Limited Edition $745.

The 2nd half of the State Shoot was held at the Washoe County Shooting Facility in Palomino Valley on Septem-ber 29th and 30th. Turnout was meek to say the least. I reckon waning in-terest and the poor economic state of the union is responsible for lack of attendance, couple that with a nota-bly “windy” area and we have a nasty scenario to deal with here in Northern Nevada.

Sporter-100 yards was won by Everett Smith .3414, Lonnie Gordon, .3701 and Jan Sarras, .3728. Yes it was blowing! Small group of .195 was shot by Lonnie Gordon. Sporter-200 yards was won by local Cody Archibald, .3188 , in 2nd was Everett Smith, .3218 and Steve

Archibald took 3rd. Small group win-ner was Jan Sarras, .334. The Sporter Grand is as listed, Everett Smith, Cody Archibald and Steve Archibald.

These aggregates combined with LV, HV, relayed the 3 Gun win to Everett Smith, Steve Archibald and Lonnie Gordon. Congratulations to you three! Unlimited-100 yards belonged Lonnie Gordon .2088, Steve Archibald .2642, and Everett Smith .2718. Small group was shot by Lonnie Gordon .118. Un-limited-200 yards saw Steve Archibald in first .2818, Travis Archibald took 2nd .2893,following in 3rd was Jan Sarras .3129. Smallest group was shot by Don Archibald .348. The Unlimited Grand played out as listed, Lonnie Gordon,

Steve Archibald and Everett Smith. The 4 gun results are Steve Archibald, Everett Smith and Lonnie Gordon. Thanks to those attended and espe-cially to Madeline (Sam) Smith for call-ing the line. We hope to see you on the line next year. Shoot well and be well!

2012 Group Nationals at Phoenix, ArizonaThe week started off with great weather, both for practice and for the match. According to the weather un-derground website, we had a high of 90 degrees on Monday the 8th and a low high of 72 degrees on Friday the 12th. Winds were for the most part light and variable. The average wind speed was 3, 4, 5, 8, 7, and 2 for the 6 days of the match. Wednesday, Thurs-day and Friday winds were the stron-gest with speeds reaching 14, 20 and 13 mph and gusts in the low 20’s. We also had a very brief shower on Thurs-day that helped knock down the dust.

Since I didn’t shoot the match and was locked up in the stat house scoring the match I’m going to write this report from a scorer’s perspective, with bits of info I was able to glean from com-petitors after the days shooting. The match started off with the 100 Yard Unlimited. Since there weren’t any targets to score I was able to watch the first relay of this match. Who bet-ter to watch shoot a group than Tony Boyer? Tony’s first group ended up be-ing a .123, 10 shots, just outstanding. Of note was the way Tony shot that group. Each shot was very deliber-ate; a deliberate and steady pace. He treated that rail like it would break if he pushed it back too hard. Once he started he didn’t stop. Of course the conditions were nearly perfect for that style and Tony took advantage of it. He went on to win 3 of the 8 matches winning the aggregate with a .1973. That first group .123 was small group for the yardage. Bob Scarbrough Jr. won the 200 yard stage with a .2918. Small group for the aggregate was a .265 fired by Charles Huckeba in match #1. When the dust cleared, Mike Conry took the 2012 Unlimited National Campion with a .2704. Mike finished 2nd at 100 and 5th at 200 yards.

Sporter 100 was won by Larry Costa with a .1696. Larry shot two 2’s in that agg but they were both .20’s. It was a horse race between the top four finishers but Larry’s match win-ning .105 in match five won the yard-age. Small group for the yardage was a

.098 fired by Ken Terrell. Gene Bucky’s won the 200 yard stage with a .1792. This win coupled with his 3rd place finish of .1780 made Gene Bucky’s the Sporter 2012 National Champion. His range measured.1786 grand is un-der the existing NBRSA World Record. Small group for the 200 was newcomer George Lozano with a .226.

Light Varmint 100 was won by Bob Scarbrough Jr. with a neat .1776. Bob shot 5 one’s, winning match #1 with a .144. Small group for the agg was a .067 shot by Lee Hachigian, this was the smallest 100 yard group Lee shot in registered competition. The Light 200 was won by Mike Ratigan with a .2211. This win gave Mike 10 points enabling him entrance into the Benchrest Hall of Fame. Small group for this agg was a .198 shot be Scott Hunter Jr. in match #4. Again as in the Unlimited, the 100 yard winner also won the Light var-mint Grand. Bob Scarbrough Jr. with a .2067 is the 2012 NBRSA Light Varmint National Champion.

The Heavy Varmint 100 was a contest between 3 shooters with Ken Hotten-stein’s .1504 beating out Dr. Tim Olt-ersdorf (.1680) and Jeff Thompson. (.1710). Small group for the agg was Hottenstein’s .067. The 200 was won by the overall top shooter, Gene Bukys with a nice .1876. Small group for the yardage went to the heart break award winner Todd Tyler with a .229. Todd shot 4 great groups at 200; his average group was a .299, all he needed was a .679 along with those groups and he would have won the 200. He did fin-ish second with a .2176 aggregate. The 2012 Heavy Varmint NBRSA National Champion is Gene Bukys. Gene had a .1979 Grand.

This competition was as hot as they get. It should be noted that there was 0.0006” difference between the 1st and 2nd place winners in the 4-Gun. Mighty fine shooting to both Gene and Bob.

In scoring the match I noticed that some 6mm bullets make smaller holes in the paper than other 6mm bullets.

Don’t know why but they did. If you want the Nationals to run smoother, let the match managers know when you crossfire, if you don’t shoot the required number of shots, if you quit or when you change calibers. This way the stat crew can get to scoring and posting and you’ll find out quicker how you’re doing. Thanks for coming and I hope everyone had a good time. Gary OcockGary was scoring this, his final match as Match Director for the Ben Avery Range. Art Clegg will assume com-mand from now on. We appreciate very much all Gary’s hard work over the years running a seamless match. Gary, Lester, Dorris and the quick and efficient target crew worked to make this another successful shoot. A heartfelt thank you to everyone. You made it a match to remember.Photo credit to Jim Nicholas.

Jay Sperry Wins at MinnetonkaSeptember 15-16, 2012

Like most of the Midwest it has been dry and hot most of the year. When you went to put your wind flags out you had to pound the pole into the rock hard ground with a hammer, at least when you did get them in you didn’t have to worry about them blow-ing over. Saturday morning Light Var-mint 100yd. started out cool and lite winds but that ended by match 3 when strong winds out of the north moved in. Dave Dowd did a fine job of shoot-ing all mid two’s for the win with a .2664, 2nd was Jay Sperry right behind with a .2684 and Mark Buettgen round-ing out the top 3 with a .2738. Small Group was a nice .141 shot by Van Sch-meichel.

After lunch we sat down for the Heavy Varmint 100yd. and we were greeted with more wind and very heavy mairge. Ken Hanson who’s shooting has steadi-ly been improving this summer held on for the win shooting his 6BR. Ken is one who you never know what he will bring to a match and try out shot his BR for the win with a .2800, Ken got a copy of Tony’s book and his shooting has really improved. Dave Dowd came 2nd with a .2868 and Jerry Lahr 3rd with a .2878. It came down to match 5 to see who could hang on for the win as it was to close to call at match 4. Dave Dowd had small group with a .122. After the frames were mover out to 200yds and the flags were set Janet Moser fired up her grill again for a BBQ with all the trimmings, I have to say that lady sure can grill.Chris Harris and his North Dakota Mob were talking trash all day long, the only time they were quiet was when they were eating.

Sunday morning Heavy Varmint 200 started with lite winds and everyone was hopping it would stay like that for the rest of the day. The winds stayed lite, but with the bright sun shine the mairge made the target look fuzzy to almost where you could not see any bullets holes.

Jay Sperry shot well on Saturday and he started Sunday with the win with a .2421 agg. It was very close again with Jay shooting a .206 in match 5 for the win. Jerry Lahr was close behind with a .2457 and Dave Dowd with a .2548 for 3rd. Jay’s .206 was small group.

After a short lunch break we shot the final agg of the weekend. The winds were picking up to 10-15 mph and heavy mairge, none of that seem to bother Jay Sperry who kept right on shooting steady for the win in LV 200. Jay shot a .2382 for the big win with Dave Dowd way back with a .2922 for 2nd and Mark Herschlip (North Dakota Mob) was 3rd with a .3090. Jay Sperry had the small group with a nice .364.

Congratulations to all the winners and a BIG thanks to Dan and Jennet our target crew and Janet for putting on another great BBQ.

This is the last match of the year at Minnetonka and the first year with our new building. Next year’s season will start on the 3rd weekend in April. Plan to make a trip up to the north next year.

Krupa Wins Great Lakes InvitationalSeptember 23, 2012Weather ranged from mid 30’s to high 50’s with a mix of everything except for snow and that was closeby at one point in this match.

Strong and steady Joe Krupa won the HV grand aggregate with a large mar-gin shooting a 0.1967, which helped him clear a path for the Two-Gun.

Sunday afternoon was a holy terror of a shooting experience. If you look at thelarge gap going into Sunday after-noon that the Man Upstairs gave my heavy gun, you can see just how really messy the conditionsl were at LV-200. I started off with a 1.457 on the first target in the afternoon and the guys around me were keeping sharp objects out of my reach. Doug Groleau won the yardage with a .3695 aggregate. That means he averaged .739 on each target!

Dominic Grunas is starting to become a real shooting force in the Eastern Re-gion and he deserved this win more so than I did. Dom makes it look so easy in the heavy wind. Last relay of the day, I look at his group and it’s sweet until I see the shot way out. He lost the two gun in one group. Dom has won something and placed at the top all year. He shot steady and kept grind-ing up until the final group. Dom surely deserves the nickname “the Domina-tor”. Keep an eye on him in 2013 in the Eastern Region.

Oak Hill Gun Club - How Didya Dew?September 16, 2012Shot okay for me. How many shoot-ers? A total of 15 appeared. How many in my class? Two. Where did I place? Second. (Getting personal now aren’t you?). Well if you were second and there were only two shooters, then you placed last--or am I missing some-thing here? Well, I would rather think I placed second--that’s what the score sheet says. You mean after all that practice you have been doing, the time you have invested, a perfect day for shooting and you come home in last place? Yes, but I had a great time with fellow shooters and I shot one real nice group. Wanna see? Maybe later. I would still rather think I was in second place.

At times there are people (spouses, mothers, fathers, friends) who can cut through the spin-garbage and make you think about things in a different perspective.

Jim Carstensen who has been winning everything he enters lately, won again the Unlimited Class easily at Oak Hill.

Keith Christianson won the Heavy Var-mint portion of the match. He had more of a challenge with 13 shooters in contention. Please read the rank-ings to get all the juicy details.

The club allows factory class guns to be shot at benchrest matches and ad-

hering to all benchrest rules except gun qualifications. This appears to be helping with our match numbers and we are seeing these shooters mov-ing toward true benchrest rifles and all the stuff that goes with benchrest shooting. Frank Taucher has been ris-ing to the top of that group. Frank is looking for a good starter bench gun that shoots from the left side.

This was our last match of 2012 and we have had an excellent target crew and statisticians this year. A hearty thank you to these guys. Without Jim Schmidt and Jerry King helping throughout the year there would be no matches at our club--they are the real workers that get things done. Thank you also to all the shooters who support our club and these matches. Plan on matches for 2013. They’re held the 3rd Sunday of the month April thru September, pend-ing club and NBRSA approval.

Sahuaro Heats Up As The Weather Cools DownRoss Herrick was on his game in Sep-tember. He won a clean sweep of all four aggregates in fine style.

Come October, however, the competi-tion fought back heartily and Jeff Bil-lotte made Ross share the winnings by taking the Heavy Gun Aggregate with an 8.31” and Wayne McDonald showed he still “had game” and won the Light Gun Score with a 146-150. Wayne also had a “sexy” high score for the day of 50-XXX...Not too shabby, Gentlemen!

2012 Board Minutes

2012 Board Minutes, Agenda Items Fi-nancials & General Membership Meet-ing Information will be published in next months’ issue of Precision Rifle-man magazine and online at www.nbrsa.org. Stay tuned for more details and thank you for your patience.

Retraction

Southwest Agenda Item #5 caused quite a raucus as the tone was written in an inflammatory manner. It should have been rewritten at a Regional level before print. Any offense caused was regretful and an oversight.

2013 World Team Members, Sydney Australia

The final US World Team qualifying point standings were compiled follow-ing completion of the Group Nationals in Phoenix. What a tight competition it turned out to be. There were only sixty four points separating the top twelve. The average finishing position in each grand used in qualifying for this team was 18th place. Standings can be viewed online at the World Team sec-tion of www.nbrsa.org/world-team.

Competitors are asked to review their point totals and advise Wayne Camp-bell, NBRSA International Representa-tive with any discrepancies as letters will go out shortly to finalize the team make up. Special thanks to Andy Shif-flett and Chris Harris for all their as-sistance in the point tabulation.

Bench Rest Rifle Club of St Louis Score MatchOctober 21, 2012

Our score shooting season has came to an end, this means it is time for us all to start planning on how we might improve for the next season. We had a total of 23 shooters; 13 Varmint for Score, 7 custom Hunter and 3 Factory shooters. We had a really nice day for late October with it quickly warming into the 70’s. We had a wind mainly from the east that caused most of us some difficulty.

In the VFS class at 100 yards the top 9 shooters shot 250’s with Tom Rip-

pee coming out on top with a 250-23X, 2nd was William Haynes 250-21X and Ron Hoehn 250-20X. At 200 yards the winner was Bill Haynes

with the only 250, Bill shot

a 250-6X, 2nd Tom Rippee 249-8X and 3rd Wayne Corley 248-8X. In the grand agg William Haynes came out on top with 500-27X, 2nd Tom Rippee 499-31X, 3rd Brad Hawkey 498-22X.

In the Hunter class the 100 yard winner was Joe Hemkens 250-17X, 2nd Tom Sisler 249-8X and 3rd Clark Greene

249-8X. At 200 yards the win-ner was Joe Hem-kens with 2 4 6 - 2 X , Tom Sisler 243-3X and 3rd Chuck Hearn 239-5X. The grand agg

the winner was Joe Hemkens 496-19X, 2nd Tom Sisler 492-11X and 3rd Clark Greene 487-12X.

In our club factory class the winner was Robert Christensen with a 235-1X, 2nd Neil Greenwell 234-3X and 3rd Mike Pearson 226-3X.

Thanks to all of our competitors that show up at the matches, to our match workers that make it all possible and a special thanks to those that travel a long distance to compete. Our first score match next year will likely be mid-March, hope to see you all then.

Van Dyne Sportsmans Club Last Match of 2012September 15, 2012

The last match of the 2012 season was shot at Van Dyne on September 15. This was also the first Varmint For Score match shot at Van Dyne. Twenty-one shooters showed up for the event, some old and some new faces. As al-ways, the conditions at Van Dyne al-ways amaze most shooters and they didn’t disappoint at this match. Must not have been too hard to figure out as there were 8 - 250’s shot at 100-yards.

At 100 yards, Tom Shilka and Craig Nagel both shot 250-21X with the tie breaker going to Tom. Second place was Craig. Tom shot a 5X on the first target to break the tie. Rick Allen with a 250-19X was in third. Fourth and fifth were rounded out by Jim Koffman with a 250-16X and Chad Schmidt with 250-15X.

Moving to 200 yards proved to be quite interesting with the timerature warm-ing and the mirage getting interest-ing. Craig Nagel managed to figure out the conditions and only dropped one point at 200 on his fourth target. This gave Crraig the win with a 249-7X at 200. Second was Keith Reinhard with a 248-5X. Third place was won by Chad Schmidt with a 248-3X. Fourth was Rick Allen’s with a 247-6X and fifth was Lee Keller with a 247-5X.

The Grand Aggregate was Craig Nagel’s with an excellent 499-28X followed in second by Chad Schmidt with a 498-18X. Third was won by Rick Allen with

497-25X and fourth was Jim Koffman with a 497-17X. Rounding out the top five was Lee Keller with 496-25X. High X count for the day went to the 100-yard champion, Tom Shilka with 29.

Many thanks to our Range Officer, Data Entry, Target Crew and all others that helped all season to make for smooth running matches all year.
