A Dropped ShotLetters To The Editor

Lee Hachigian, Editor

Precision Rifleman Magazine welcomes letters to the editor. We reserve the right to edit all pub-lished letters for clarity and length. In sending your letters and emails, you agree to provide the NBRSA approval to use the material in any for-mat. Letters to the Editor, can be sent to [email protected].

Trading Post Lee, I would just like to say you are doing a great job with the magazine. I would also like to float a ideal out there when precision shooting magazine was running they had the trading post I know with all the forums and internet trading maybe there not a need maybe try it a month or two like I said great job keep up the great work

EFSouth East Region

Thank you for the nice comments. The idea about a Trading Post was kicked around by the NBRSA Leadership Team. I’m not against it or for it. I’ve always found greater success selling items on the internet. I personally think that the new website should host a new Classified Section to sell stuff (and make it cost neutral for members). Also, as we get into the shooting season, magazine space/pages will become a premium for match reports.

Match Fee Increase Lee, When I started in 2010, the Match Fee was $80; then it increased to $90; now at some matches it is $120 for a 2-Gun. Are we making a mistake pric-ing ourselves out for newer shooters? I

trust that nobody will be going around with a can asking (not subtly) for dona-tions for the target crew.

CGEastern Region

I reached out to Jack Neary, ER Director for the background to the price increase.

Lee, The reason for the 2-Gun maximum fee increase to $120 dollars is simple..., as you are well aware, the attendance at all regional group NBRSA matches has been trending down over the past 10+ years to a point where a number of range/match directors have said if they can’t make money, they will no longer hold any more matches. I know what you’re thinking.... lower the 2-Gun match fee from $100-$120 down to $XX dollars and you’ll get more shoot-ers...! This sounds good..., but has not worked for the few brave ranges whom have tried this in offering half or reduced fee matches to bolster attendance. Additionally, due to the vast amount shooter complaints..., the NBRSA will also be transitioning to a new target paper and new printer source. This change in target paper and to a new printing company will result in much higher target costs to each of our ranges. The NBRSA Leadership Team have tried and tried and tried, some more, to find another target

paper and printing company with the same low cost of our current supplier.

New Gear/Equipment Lee, I really enjoy the “New Gear / Equipment” section in the magazine. In the March issue you highlighted the Frankford Arsenal Platinum Series In-tellidropper Powder Scale and Dispens-er that you saw at the Shot Show. I was wondering if you have an experience or opinion on the unit. Questions like, how fast is it, is it accurate and repeat-able, is it stable enough for outside use, etc.?

BSEastern Region

When I received your enquiry, I reached out to the folks at Frankford Arsenal, and they were kind enough to send me a unit on consign-ment to give it a try and provide the readers a report. You can read my review next month.

We have a covered loading area with solid benches and a cement floor. Flag stands need to be capable of being as low as 16” and as tall as 5’. Modern restrooms and showers are available for everyone. Un-limited camping is available but electricity is limited and will be on a first come first served basis. Res-ervations for electrical camping sites WILL NOT be accepted. Camping fees are $5.00 per day without electricity and $10.00 per day with electricity. Breakfast and lunch will be provided by the Roosevelt Citizenship Washington Focus, a local 4-H group, Monday through Friday.

For your non-shooting partner there is excellent shopping in Greeley, Loveland and Fort Collins. The major chain stores are available in all three cities as well as a myriad of small stores and shops that will garner the interest of the “antiquers”, the “hobbyists” and the “looky loos”. A little further drive of about two hours into the beautiful Colorado Rockies will get slot machine, blackjack, etc. at Blackhawk

and Central City west of Denver, Colorado. There is also sight-seeing in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Motels are available nearby with the closet ones being the Cobblestone Inns in Eaton, 970-454-2077 (12 miles) and Kersey 970-351-9411 (15 miles). Full service hotels are available in Greeley, Loveland and Fort Collins.

Question #1: I am very pragmatic with my FL die set-up to ensure I use several cases, shot with different loads, to ensure my shoulder push-back from my full-length die will properly size from both lighter loads and my cases that were shot with hotter loads. Question #2: Do you clean your brass; necks (inside and out) and/or primer pockets between reloads?- I always clean the outside of each of my necks with steel wool to ensure I do not get a build-up of carbon residue inside my barrel chamber. I also use a nylon brush to knock-down the carbon on the inside of the case neck.- I also use a primer pocket cutter/cleaning tool that has a shoulder to ensure my primer pockets are ALWAYS cut to the same depth. This is of vital importance to ensure all my primers are seated the same depth, which is recessed below the case head. If you do not cut/

clean your primer pockets consistently you will change your ignition from the primers that are seated deeper versus the primers that are just flush with the case head. You will definitely see a loss in ac-curacy with your rifles if you do not get this right.

Jerry Kloeppel wins Varmint for ScoreClark Greene wins Hunter Class

We had a very light turnout for our first match of the year, the weatherman scared people away but the winds turned out to not be as bad as predicted. We had 3 Hunter shooters and 9 Varmint for Score shooters for a total of just 12 shooters. We had 2 new shooters that traveled from eastern Illinois and we truly do appreciate that, especially on a not-so-nice day. There was no shortage of wind at 200 yards but we accepted the challenge and all had a good time. The winds were generally from the west but really changed velocity quickly. In the VFS class at 100 yards the winner was Dennis Boyet with 250-17X, followed by Jerry Gresko with a 250-16X and 3rd place was Bob Miller with a 249-16X. At 200 yards the winner was Jerry Kloeppel with a 245-4X, 2nd was Bob Miller with 244-3X and 3rd was Wayne Corley with a 243-3X. In the grand ag-gregate Jerry Kloeppel was the winner with a 493-20X, 2nd was Bob Miller with 493-19X and 3rd place was Wayne Corley with a 492-18X. In the Hunter class the 100 yard winner was Clark Greene with 248-7X, 2nd was Mike Schneidman with a 247-

10X, 3rd was Tom Sisler with a 245-7X. At 200 yards the winner was Clark Greene with a 243-4X, 2nd was Mike Schneidman with a 239-1X and 3rd was Tom Sisler with a 232-1X. In the grand the winner was Clark Greene with a 491-11X, 2nd place shooter was Mike Schneidman with a 486-11X and 3rd was Tom Sisler with 477-8X.

Sahuaro 1,000 Yard MatchMarch 3, 2019

Would you be disappointed after shooting a 6.08 inch aggregate in light gun? Especially after shooting the small-est group of the match with a 3.62”. Well, maybe just a little if your agg. didn’t win first place. That was Wayne McDonald. He was third in light gun group. Second was Ed Schween post-ing a 6.04” 15 shot aggregate. But then shooting in the afternoon, Jeff Billotte walked away with top honors for his 6.00 group aggregate, and that was after a year’s layoff! Maybe I need to take a year off. The top three were separated by only .04”. It was some outstanding shooting by just about everyone at the March 2019 Sahuaro match. Conditions were a bit better than normal and it was almost a trigger pulling contest. In light gun alone there were no less than 30 sub-MOA groups out of 45. That’s two thirds of all of the groups! All but two shooters had at least one and mostly two sub-MOA groups, while the top six shooters had all sub-MOA groups and the first nine shooters had sub-MOA ag-gregates. The same top three in group were again tops in score. The first six com-petitors all nicely keeping their scores in the 40’s. Wayne prevailed this time, only dropping 9 points to win with a 141-1X. Jeff was right behind him with a 139-1X and then Ed shooting a 137. High single target score went to Ed with a 49. Heavy gun was similar, but this time with Lon Person leading the way. He was also shooting against the afternoon winds in relay four which had finally ar-rived to keep us on our toes. Lon posted amazingly consistent groups of 7.37”, 7.37” & 7.56” for a winning aggregate of 7.43”. Don’t forget, that’s 30 shots! Out of 30 groups in heavy, we had 20 that were sub-MOA, once again exactly two thirds. The top seven had all sub-MOA aggregates and the top three had all sub-MOA groups. Wow, what a

great bunch of riflemen. Runner up in group was Wild Bill Warner with an 8.10” agg. And right on his tail was John Benz with his 8.41”. In fact 2nd place through 5th place all had 8” aggregates. Super Dave Osborn and Jerry Riesdorff tied for 4th and 5th, both shooting 8.625” aggregates, but it was Super Dave that shot the smallest 10 shot group of 5.50”! I have spoken before about how hard it is to keep all of your scores in the 90’s in heavy gun. On this day the top three heavy gun shooters were able to do that. At first, thinking he was look-ing good, Dale Arenson’s 282-4X turned out to only be third. Super Dave was really rockin. Remember that awesome 5.5” group? Well it was also the highest single target score of 99-4X. And his total score was an impressive 288-8X. But even then Bill Warner was not to be outdone, shooting a 98, a 97 and a 96, Wild Bill only dropped 9 points (just like the light gun winning score) to win with a 291-4X. Back shooting with us at this match after a long lay off was world record

holder Charles Greer, and he is not the only world record holder in this crowd. There are at least three more.

Sometimes we are battling conditions and sometimes the biggest battle is put-ting together good loads, staying calm and having good table manners (at the bench). You just never know. Either way, this is one great bunch of shooters. If you feel like trying your hand against them, it happens the second Saturday of every month at the Three Points Range, 30 miles west of Tucson. It is expertly run by Long Range Bench Rest Hall of Famer Karl Hunstiger. Oh... and that part about my taking a year off? You can forget that. This is just too much fun.

Middle Georgia Gun Owners Assoc. - ShamrockMatch Report Received on 3/31/19

Buddy Ross Wins the ShamrockMarch 16-17, 2019

We had the 18th Annual Shamrock Shoot on March 16 and 17 in Dublin Georgia. Fifty-three people shot on Saturday. The match ran a lot faster on Sunday so only a few people quit early. Gordon Earp could not score this year, so I had to do it. It was my second time scoring a match. The groups were tight and a lot of three hole patterns were being shot. It took me a while to get up to speed. Saturday started out with good weather. Later in the day it rained; but, only for the target crew. The scattered rain seemed come when the target crew was down range. Then as they were driving back the rain would stop for the shooters. There was not enough rain to get the ground soggy so we didn’t have

to pull anyone out of the mud. Saturday only had two people in the top ten for both LV and HV. Wayne Campbell placed 2nd and 7th and Harley Baker placed 8th and 9th respectively. At the end of Saturday, it was anyone’s Shoot to win. Harley had the LV 100 small group of .089” and Wayne had the HV 100 small group at .058”. It looked like Wayne Campbell would win again. The LV 100 had Craig Rowe in first place with a .2238 agg. Paul Mitchell in sec-ond with .2270 and third place was Jeff Graves with .2286. The HV 100 in the afternoon had Billy Stevens with .1548, Wayne Campbell with .1870 and Rob Maclennan with .1956.

turn brass than try to get a couple more good reamers and a good die to match if I change to thicker necks. My gunsmith, Hacksaw, does a excellent job chambering my barrels so they all measure very close to the same on headspace.. I use a straight line full length .256 die and a Hood Press. The press has the micrometer adjustment in 1/2 thou increments. I’m always in the ballpark when working with a new barrel and usually only have to bump the shoul-ders more when the brass gets on in life. At the end of every day I go through my match brass to make sure it cycles good when closing the bolt and usually have to hit a few pieces a bit more to make them cycle good. I want my brass cycling

May 2019 Precision Rifleman 19 WWCCA - Spring Tune-Up

Match Report Received on 4/15/19

WWCCA Spring Tune-UpApril 13-14, 2019

Each year the April group match at WWCCA brings together shooters from the Eastern Region who been hibernating the past 6 months eager to get back into shooting form. The weather and conditions at WWCCA in April are somewhat of a crap shoot, sometimes bringing warm temperatures in the 70s during the 2017 match, to bitterly cold temperatures (in the low 30s) in 2018. This year 27 shooters were greeted with comfortable spring weather on Friday’s practice day. However, on Saturday during the 100-yard matches, conditions changed as they typically do in Michigan during the spring. Conditions were both dif-ficult to tune to and difficult to handle during the matches. Starting off the day with sunny conditions and tem-peratures around 50-58 degrees, the west winds were howling 20-25 mph. For those of you that haven’t shot at WWCCA, a west wind blows directly down range and comes over a large loading/range house directly behind the firing line. You can easily see your bullets hit low on the target when the daisy on your first flag is spinning hard. The other condition which many of us watch is humidity. In Michigan, the humidity is typically between 45%-65% when it isn’t raining. We started the day with humidity around 36%, and it went down to 24%. This made it challenging to maintain tune on your load for most of us that typically shoot VihtaVuori 133 in Michigan. I know I couldn’t get my gun to shoot well, so I shot LT32 in the afternoon but not well with my lack of experience with that powder. The shooter that did have a handle on the tough conditions was Lacy Til-ley, who shot a .2536 agg to win the LV 100. Dale Dillingham’s .2602 and Peter Smith’s .2890 came in second and third, respectively. There were only four shooters that could muster up a

.2xxx agg. Steve Theye had a .155 for the smallest group. In the afternoon during the HV 100 match, none other than Jack Neary (our Eastern Region Director) pulled away from the crowd with a fine .2394 agg. Jeff Gaidos came in second with a .2668

agg, and again Lacy Tilley was third with a .2680 agg. Small group went to Jeff Gaidos with a nice .145. After a nice steak dinner on Sat-urday evening hosted by WWCCA, the

competitors were back to the range on Sunday morning to shoot the 200 yard aggregates. Well, as can be expected the conditions changed drastically on Sunday. Temperatures were outright cold (at 36-39 degrees), the winds were out of the East/Northeast at 15 mph into the shooters faces, and it rained the entire day. In the morning HV 200 match, Mario Sanchez shot a respectable .2653 agg to win first place. I shot a .2755 to secure second place and Jack Neary shot a .2779 agg for third. I shot the small group with a .174 (sometimes the wind blows them in the same hole). The HV Grand Agg was won by Jack Neary with a .2587 agg. Jeff Gaidos

came in second with a .2829 agg. In the afternoon, my luck con-tinued, and I was fortunate to win the LV 200 with a .2304 agg. Bill Gam-mon shot a nice .2458 agg to come in second, and Victor Potts shot a .2547 agg to place third. Small group was shot by Lloyd Miller, a nice .263. The LV Grand was won by Dale Dillingham with a .2725 agg. The 2-Gun and Spring Tune-up Champion was Jack Neary with a .2925 agg. Jeff Gaidos came in sec-ond. There were only three shooters that could muster up a .2xxx agg in the 2-Gun.

The day started in the low forties and warmed to the low fifties. As the sun brightened the mirage built until it was a real factor on the second relay. Special mention should be given to Jeff Locke from Bellevue WA who placed first in five categories. Curt Menden-hall of Sutherlin OR and Bill Johnston of Prineville OR showed consistent shooting with Curt winning the two gun score and Bill winning the two gun group. Thank you to all our shooters and to TCGC for hosting the event. Hope to see you all back on May 19 for the next 600-yd event. Fred Dobson

Bench Rest Rifle Club of St. Louis Match Report Received on 4/11/19

April 6-7, 2019Group Match

Twenty-seven shooters traveled to Benchrest Rifle Club in Wright City, Missouri for the 6-7 April match and I must say the weather was much better than it was in February. Condi-tions Saturday brought a nice day with temperature in the upper sixties and winds only 5-8 MPH which brought in some nice groups in Light Varmint 100 yards. Bob Hammack got off to a nice start and held down one of the top two spots through the 4th match with Dave Coots and Mike Schneidman close behind. However, Bill Storbeck, who started middle of the pack, was not to be outdone as he steadily climbed the ladder and overtook Bob on the last match to take the win. Bob ended up in 2nd and Mike took the 3rd spot. Jerry King took the small group with a real nice .099 target in the second match. Bill Storbeck continued strong in Heavy Varmint 200 yards as he continued his streak winning the first two matches. Through the final three matches though it was the Dean Ekstrom show. Dean shot three superb groups which moved him into 1st and he never looked back. Bill Storbeck held onto 2nd place and our Regional Director Bud Mundy took the 3rd spot. Dean shot the small group with a .076 and finished off with a 1718 agg. Nice shooting Dean!! Saturday evening the flags were moved to 200 yards early enough to get in a little practice before sitting down for a nice steak dinner and a little cama-raderie. Scott Pieper was the head chef and grill master and he did a fantastic job providing us that delicious meal and the lunches on Saturday and Sunday. Conditions on Sunday were a little tougher. Temperatures were nice, and in the low seventies, but the winds kicked up a bit and were gusting up to 14 mph by late morning which took a toll on Sunday’s group sizes.

Larry Scharnhorst got off to a quick lead but the next two matches went to Dean Ekstrom with Wayne Corley, Bud Mundy and Greg King all closely be-hind. Greg picked up the pace for the final two matches winning both of them and edging out Wayne Corley who took 2nd and Dean Ekstrom just nudged out Larry to take a 3rd. In the 3rd match Bob Jacobs shot a nice .301 for small group honors. The winds continued to cause a lot of frustration for 200 yard Light Varmint and there were a lot of big inch plus groups shot and a handful of two inchers!! There was plenty of mumbling going on in the reloading room. There were three lead changes in the match between Wayne Corley, Dave Coots and Greg king. Dave took three of the matches but it was very close between those three and Larry Scharnhorst. Dave Coots ended up winning the match with Greg taking 2nd, and Larry taking a 3rd. Bill Storbeck shot a .301 in the 3rd match to win small group.

None of the other small groups were even close to Bill’s group. Light Varmint Grand was very close between the top five shooters but Greg King prevailed as the Top Gun just edging out Dave Coots who took 2nd place. The next three places were very close with Mike Schneidman in 3rd, Larry Scharnhorst in 4th and Mark Harpenau in 5th place. It wasn’t as close in the Heavy Varmint Grand as Dean Ekstrom easily took 1st place with the next 4 places all pretty close. Greg King ended up with a 2nd place, Wayne Corley got a 3rd, Bud Mundy took 4th and 5th went to Larry Scharn-horst. Top spot for the 2 Gun Grand was very close between Greg King and Larry Scharnhorst but Greg edged him out for another 1st place win this year.. Larry took 2nd place. The next three spots were neck and neck with Wayne Corley, in 3rd, Dave Coots in 4th and

Wayne Corley wins Varmint for Score

Matthew Hon wins Hunter Class

We really have had mixed weather this spring at our club, 70 degrees for week and on match day it drops into the 30’s with snow flurries mixed with switching headwinds makes it a tough day for a match. The weather kept a lot of our usual shooters away. See attached photo as we started to set up wind flags. The wind started in the morning blowing snow in on the benches and equipment and the snow did let up about mid-day but the wind only eased up a little. We only had 10 competitors but we did have a jovial time. In the VFS class at 100 yards the winner was Wayne Corley with the only 250, a 250-9X, 2nd was Harry Ward with 249-18X and 3rd was Mike Schneidman with 249-12X. At 200

yards Wayne Corley was the winner with 246-7X, 2nd was Bud Mundy with 246-4X and 3rd was Jerry Gresko with 243-6X. In the grand agg the winner was Wayne Corley with 496-16X, 2nd was Bud Mundy with 493-16X and 3rd was Mike Schneidman with 492-15X. In the Hunter Class the 100-yard winner was Matthew Hon with 242-6X, 2nd was Clark Greene with 239-7X and 3rd was Paul Hon with 239-3X. At 200 yards the winner was Paul Hon with 239-4X, 2nd was Matthew Hon with

238-3X and 3rd was Clark Greene with 231-2X. In the grand agg the winner was Matthew Hon with 480-9X, 2nd was Paul Hon with 478-7X and 3rd was Clark Greene with 470-9X.In the photo left to right are: Mike Schneidman, Clark Greene, Bud Mundy, Matthew Hon, Paul Hon and Wayne Corley. Thanks to all for coming out on such a lousy day we hope to see you at our next match on Sunday at 9 AM on May 5th.

HALL OF FAMEA Brief History and Listing of

Inductees as of March 2019

By Joe Krupa

In every competitive sport there is some metric where accomplishment is measured and chronicled for the sake of history. It’s how we measure ourselves, set goals and work tirelessly to attain. Theodore Roosevelt once said ”…nothing in the World is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain and difficulty”. If you have shot competitive Benchrest before, you know what I’m talking about. I would venture a guess that very few of us have not drove home from a match where we didn’t think that we had not left something on the table. But, that is why we keep going; it’s the combination of the tease that your next target could be a potential world record and the shear challenge of competition that brings us back. This article is about The United States Benchrest Hall of Fame; a little history and some discussion about the shooters in our sport who have taken up

Every year in mid-May, those fortunate to achieve the points necessary for the “Benchrest Hall of Fame” are inducted at Kelbly’s Supershoot in front of their

peers. Pictured above is the author inducting Jack Neary in 2010

the challenge and got past the mark on the yardstick that put them into this re-cord book. This measurement happens to be about competitive group shoot-ing and is not in any way dismissive of an accomplishment in any of the other shooting disciplines. Any of us who have shot score benchrest can certainly attest to the significant difficulty of that discipline. But, it was our fathers in the shooting sports and staff at Rifle Magazine who originally set the criteria for this attainment, and that is what I’m writing about today. One can have few honors that give as much satisfaction than the be called a “Hall of Famer”. The United States Benchrest Hall of Fame was started by the staff

of Rifle Magazine in 1972. It set the criteria for induction to shoot one’s way into the Hall by acquiring ten points by winning yardages, grand aggregates or the Three-Gun championship at the NBRSA Varmint and Unlimited Nation-als; with a point for a yardage win and two points for a grand aggregate and three-gun win. Rifle Magazine had gone back and looked at NBRSA Nationals wins back to 1954 and began the tally. The original NBRSA Nationals in 1954 only included the Unlimited class, which in that year was won by Ed McNally. Varmint classes were added in 1960 and then the Three-Gun was included in 1961 when Warren Page took that initial title. The original six members of the United States Hall of Fame were L.E. (Red) Cornelison, Tom Gillman, Paul Gottschall, Dave Hall, Warren Page and Ed Shilen. In 1984, the Hall of Fame was transferred to an outside agency inde-pendent by the NBRSA. And in 1985 winners of similar events of the IBS Na-tionals were appropriately included with the NBRSA inductees, with these wins reviewed back to the first IBS Nationals in 1970 when Jack Demming won that initial IBS 3-Gun. The members of the Hall also have provision to recognize honorary inductees who have brought significant contributions to the shooting disciplines.

May 2019 Precision Rifleman 25As of 2019 there are eleven Honorary Members of the Unites States Ben-chrest Hall of Fame:

Homer Culver Harvey Donaldson Skip Gordon Clyde Hart Robert W. Hart Ross Sherman Ray Speer Merle H. (Mike) Walker L.E. (Sam) Wilson Nate Boop Lowell Hottenstein

Today, the United States Ben-chrest Hall of Fame is administered by 1993 inductee Rex Reneau. In the past 47 years since its inception (and the 65 years that Nationals were held), there have been 339 shooters who have earned Hall of Fame points and 50 individuals have accomplished the necessary Nationals wins to attain this honor. They are listed below:

Some other interesting facts. The most Hall of Fame points won at one Nationals was eleven by Tony Boyer at

the 2012 IBS Nationals at Weikert, PA. There were four times that one shooter won the next highest tally of eight points at one Nationals: Tony at the 2009 IBS Nationals again at Weikert, the author at the 2007 IBS Nationals at St. Louis, Gene Bukys at the 2012 NBRSA Na-tionals at Phoenix (Gene also won seven at the 2014 NBRSA Nationals at Holton, MI) and Larry Costa at the 2016 NBRSA Nationals at Phoenix. The shortest time that one shooter attained the necessary ten points was by Alan Arnette when he won three points at both the 1998 IBS and NBRSA Nationals and followed it up with five points at the 1999 IBS Nationals; all over the span of about 13 months. Walt Berger (yes, of Berger Bullets) won his first point in 1973 and his most recent (and 18th) 43 years later at the 2014 NBRSA Nationals at Holton, MI. Lester Bruno has had a similar run with his first with the IBS Three-gun in the 1979 and is still winning points 39 years later (with his most recent two at

the 2018 Nationals at Holton). And our current U.S. World Team Captain Wayne Campbell won his first point in 2000 at the NBRSA Nationals and is still winning points, with five at the most recent Nationals at Holton. And then there’s Tony Boyer. Tony won his first point in the Heavy Varmint class at the 1979 IBS Nationals. He won his unprecedented 176th point 38 years later at the 2017 NBRSA Nationals at St. Louis (where he won six points at that venue). He and his wife Faye (who not surprisingly is the only female shooter in the Hall, so far) have been top-level competitors for the greater part of four decades. smooth in case I run em....I do this by feel with the firing pin removed and no primer in the case. Question #2: I clean the outside of my brass with 000 steel wool. I’ve been shooting for 18 years. Thirteen of those 18 years I cleaned the inside of the necks with a hard nylon brush. The other 5 years I basically did not clean the necks unless the brass hadn’t been shot for a while and the inside looked weird from non use. Two of those 5 years that I didn’t clean the necks I qualified for the World Team. Then in 2018 I didn’t clean them , and I probably will not clean from now on. I don’t see any way residue can build up on the inside of the necks with all the heat coming out that little hole. I think a consistent bullet release is possible without cleaning the necks for short range Benchrest. When competing I clean the primer pockets with a Whitetail tool in my cordless drill. When tuning or practic-ing, sometimes I skip cleaning them one time.

The Editor

Question #1: My first sizing die was smithed by Jim Borden in 1999, and I used it for at least 10 years. In those early years of my competitive shooting I seldom loaded over 29.8 grains of V-133 in my 6ppc. During a practice day at 2009 Supershoot, I experimented with higher powder loads, and everything seemed to work great. However, after the second day of competition, I started to experi-ence stiff bolt lifts, and I couldn’t size my brass enough to prevent this. I was load-ing next to Gene Bukys, and he helped me out by lending me one of his sizing dies which squeezed the cartridge base a little more. I subsequently purchased the die, and never had a problem again. I set up my sizing die with the use of the Accugauge (see Ad on page 20). This is one tool every benchrest shooter should have to ensure you are not moving the shoulder back too much when sizing your brass. In my .262 neck chambers, I use a .257 bushing. In my .268 neck chambers,

I use a .264 bushing. Once you determine the size of the bushing you want, you need to make sure that your necks are concentric. You may need to try several bushing or flip them upside down to get the best results.

Question #2: I clean the outside necks of my brass with Krazy Cloth, and I use a nylon brush to smooth out the inside of the neck. As to the primers, I always clean out the pocket residue with a Primer Pocket Uniformer tool.

Next Months Questions:• What is your barrel break-in pro-

cess? How do you clean your bar-rels, what do you use? How do you verify that your cleaning process is working? Do you clean after each target, match, etc.?

• When setting up your rest and bags on the bench, are there any key items shooters should focus on? Do you shoot free-recoil?

The floating design of our neck turner and the universal floating case driver allows the case mouth (bore) to run on the arbor absolutely concentric. Therefore allowing O.D. to be turned concentric with I.D. The tail-stock creates a horizontal inline support for the base of the case. Also allows the operator to keep both hands on the power screw driver or drill. This makes it very easy to control feed rate of the cutting operation, generating a very fine turned finish. Case holder drivers are designed to be the most gentle driver, yet providing an adequate hold. DOES NOT DRIVE OFF THE PRIMER POCKET NO PRIMER POCKET OR CASE DAMAGE. Driver shaft is hexed to use power screw driver or drill. 17cal. Fireball to a .416 Rigby. Also 50cal.
