WHHA Quarterly Newsletter
First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone, their families and their noble steeds the most joyous holiday season.
It‟s been a long and trying year for everyone with inflating gas prices, rainouts, and busy schedules. As you read this, I‟m sure you‟re wondering why this is the only newsletter that you have received in 2008. I apologize that the newsletter has been absent this year, but unfortunately, Jessica had to resign as editor of the Wis-consin Harness News. Jess has done a phenomenal job over the past few years, but due to her new employment with the Pete Foley Stable and most recently her position at the USTA, she was forced to give up the newsletter. A BIG thank you goes out to Jess for her years of service.
We are very fortunate that board member Sadie Gunnink stepped up to the plate and took over the reins as Editor. This is her first issue, and I‟m sure you will find it enjoyable and informative. Going forward, we will be having a quarterly newsletter sent out and will take the necessary steps to make sure we get this done as it‟s a very important part of the WHHA and to it‟s members.
Throughout this issue you will find all kinds of information about the upcoming annual meeting and banquet. As committee chair, I am very excited about the upcoming changes. They are noted later in this issue.
I hope everyone can make it out to the annual meeting in January. Let‟s make it the biggest and best ever!
Happy Holidays,

and Diane Kleinsteiber (Dan Patch Dis-play) will be joining us. This will be a good opportunity for vendors to share their information with our members.
If anyone has any ideas for any other vendors they would like to see at the exhibit, please let Gabe know and he will make contact with them.
This year we will have a new addition to the festivities. We have invited a couple different vendors ranging from equip-ment dealers to nutritionists to veteri-nary care to join us and display their wares in their very own “Vendor Room”.
At press time, we confirmed that Walsh, Nutrena Feed, Equishine, Racers Placers

Please be sure that if you would like to nominate someone that you speak to them prior to the annual meeting to be sure that they are interested. All candi-dates must be present at the annual meeting in order to run.
If you have an interest or questions about running for our board of direc-tors, please contact Gabe Wand or Rick Davis for further information.
Board of Director Elections
We will have board of director elections during the WHHA Business meeting in the afternoon. We will be voting on 3 Directors. Susan Schroeder & Jeanne Marquis have expressed interest in an-other term on our board of directors. Basil Remley has decided not to seek re-election and we give him a big thank you for the time that he has put on the board of directors.
This year we will be trying something new. The Nomination Committee will not be bringing a slate of 3 candidates as
The annual live and silent auctions are our biggest fundraisers of the year – and this year, it will no doubt be the same.
The Fund Raising committee is busy out soliciting donations, but we need the membership‟s help as well. If you‟re able to bring an item, big or small, for the auction, it is very much appreciated. Every little bit helps!
Auction
The proceeds from the auction help fund everything we need to make the upcoming racing season a success. The money raised helps pay for things like advertising, insurance, sound systems, starting gates and purses for the horses.
So remember, bid high, and bid often! It all goes to a great cause!

Jackson Harness Raceway closes operations
Thursday, December 04, 2008 - by John Pawlak, the U.S. Trotting Association
Columbus, OH --- MTR Gaming Group, the majority owner and operator of Jackson Harness Raceway, has an-nounced that it will close operations at the Michigan harness track, effective immediately.
In 2005 the West Virginia gaming company purchased a 90 percent stake in the track, which first hosted racing in 1948.
A brief statement from the firm said, “Effective today (December 4) Jackson Trotting Association has ceased op-eration of racing at Jackson Harness Raceway in Lansing, Mich. Jackson Harness Raceway will not schedule live and simulcast racing in 2009.”
The Jackson Citizen-Patriot, in reporting on a potential closure in its Nov. 21, 2008 edition, said the closure would cost 40 full-time and 100 seasonal jobs.
MTR Gaming, which also operates Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in Chester, W.Va., recently reduced its total workforce by four percent, and removed Friday nights from the Chester track‟s live Thoroughbred racing schedule.
The newspaper also reported that MTR, which it said lost $1 million at Jackson since it purchased the large stake, had hoped the Michigan Legislature would have taken steps to approve racetrack slot machines in the economi-cally starved state -- which has not happened.
Columbus, OH --- County fair harness racing is an im-portant part of our history at the USTA. We have been given the opportunity to ensure their survival and promote growth in 2009, in both the number of horsemen involved and the number of fans in the stands.
With the winter months upon us, the USTA would like to know your opinions on county fair racing to better pro-gram for next summer. Please take a few minutes to com-plete our county fair survey by going online to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=F8JP02hJ9J7SvbhxF1GHog_3d_3d

General Interest
Osteoarthritis medications were a hot topic at the 2007 American Association of Equine Practitioners conven-tion, held Dec. 1-5 in Orlando, Fla., with four presenta-tions on various medications during one half-day session alone.
In particular, David Frisbie, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, associate professor of veterinary clinical sciences at Colorado State University (CSU), discussed a study com-paring clinical efficacy and joint health parameters of Surpass (topical liposomal diclofenac cream) to those of the commonly used oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication phenylbutazone (Bute).
Does Surpass really work to improve joint health, or is it just another way of delivering a painkiller? CSU re-searchers set out to answer that question.
In 24 horses, carpal (knee) osteoarthritis was induced in one knee, and the horses were split into one control and two treatment groups. One treatment group got 7.2 g of Surpass on the affected joint every 12 hours for five
days, while the other received 2 g of Bute orally once a day for five days. Horses were exercised on a high-speed treadmill daily, and lameness, tissue scores, biochemical scores, and biomarker scores were used to evaluate the efficacy of treatment.
Frisbie reported that the Bute- and Surpass-treated limbs got significantly better in terms of lameness scores. The cartilage glycosaminoglycan content in the Surpass-treated limbs was better than with Bute (meaning the cartilage was better hydrated and lubricated). There were also improvements in bone sclerosis (hardening) of the radial carpal bone and total erosion scores in the Sur-pass-treated joints.
"Both Surpass and Bute had symptom-modifying ef-fects, but Surpass alone had disease-modifying (curing) effects," Frisbie summarized. "Diclofenac liposomal cream (Surpass) applied to a joint with experimental os-teoarthritis provides a significantly better outcome than a similar joint treated with systemic phenylbutazone."

Pfizer Animal Health recently launched two new Web sites that offer education on deworming topics, as well as the convenience of an online reminder system. Rotationis-Key.com allows horse owners to register for e-mails custom-ized to help them manage the deworming schedules of their horses. The site Equimaxhorse.com offers a wide variety of educational materials on proper deworming and the damage that tapeworms and other parasites can cause in the horse.
Effective deworming is a cornerstone of good horse health management, but decisions on what types of dewormers to use and when to deworm can be challenging for horse own-ers. Through RotationisKey.com, Pfizer Animal Health al-lows owners to choose to follow either the Daily Plus daily deworming schedule or the Rotation is Key paste deworm-ing program. By registering with the site, owners will receive

appropriate reminder e-mails that will help them to assure that horses get the product they need, when they need it.
"RotationisKey.com is all about making rotation convenient for horse owners," said Kristin Ruff, equine marketing man-ager at Pfizer Animal Health. "Veterinarians agree that rotat-ing between chemical classes is important for proper de-worming, and this site is designed to make those decisions easy."
Pfizer Animal Health's other new site, Equimaxhorse.com,
provides a hub for information on the company's Equimax

well as education on topics centered on parasitism, tapeworm
infections and their effects in the horse.
