quantom purpose
• Improving air transport time efficiency through orchestration of a step change in aircraft health monitoring & management
large A/C; regional; bizjet; helicoptersaircraft assets: airframe; engine; systems; cabin
• Previous working title: “GOLD”

why focus on aircraft health management?
• The European Commission and industry advisory groups recognise improving the time efficiency of air transport as a strategic objective, societally and economically:
Congestion of air space demands efficient use of that space– No delays, disruptions, diversions, turns-back
The market (airlines) demands unprecedented levels of aircraft availability and significant reductions in operating cost
– Diversity of business and operating modelsPassenger tolerance to delays & cancelations is diminishing, and
they rightly expect the highest standards of transport safety to be maintained
– Diversity of airlines, and airline business models
• Aircraft health management is the critical contributor to the achievement of this strategic objective

why is quantom necessary when…?
• There is a lot of health monitoring & management technology available, or in development
Smart wireless sensors, RFID, prognostic algorithms, diagnostic methods etc
Global communication networksMany R&T projects: TATEM, SMMART, ECAB, SMIST, HILAS,
SWANS, WISE, TRIADE, ARTIMA, AROSATEC …
• Some visionary OEMs have already transformed their after sales support businesses

Because, A/C HM is a highly complex system of systems….
• There is no common understanding of the health management
“system” for air transport
• Airlines, MROs, OEMS operate in a fragmented maintenance world Airlines/MROs presented with diverse, dissimilar proprietary solutions
Innovation barriers: where and how to play; difficult access to/visibility of information
at market level
• HM solutions have been driven more bottom up than top down Often no clear business case to justify the selection of technologies
• The volume of information to be communicated and managed
continues to grow, as is the temptation to add more sensors and
intelligent devices• There remains a lack of confidence/trust in the robustness and
dependability of prognosis and diagnosis What does all this technology actually bring?
