We are in the midst of the holiday season, a time when many of us look for ways to serve our commu-nity and make the holidays a special time for all. If you are looking for ways to serve your community,

the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas has many opportunities. Our members have been very generous in supporting the Guild’s community service activities. You make hun-

dreds of quilts each year for our Covers for Kids project, providing comfort to homeless and ill children. You cre-ate and donate beautiful mini quilts for the auction held at our annual show, Quilt Celebration. You attend the auction and bring friends to bid on the quilts. This year the proceeds of the mini quilt auction will support two organizations, the Dallas Chapter of Newborns in Need and Captain Hope’s Kids. Both of these organizations do their special work in the Dallas community, so your donations stay “at home”. You will hear more about what these organizations do for infants and children in our community in upcoming newsletters and Guild general meetings.

Our machine quilters donate many hours of quilting time to help us get tops turned into Covers for Kids. Many of you have been regulars at the monthly Covers for Kids workshops, helping Rhonda Anderson turn other Guild mem-bers fabric donations into quilts.

You make Christmas stockings for our Stocking Project. For many years, we have donated 2,000 hand-made stockings, filled with goodies, to children in the Dallas Public Schools. Some individual members and friendship groups make hun-dreds of stockings each year. Oth-ers of you work an entire day to fill the stockings and have them ready for distribution.

This month we will recognize our members who go that extra step to support our guild. I thank each recognized Outstanding Volun-teer for all you do for the Guild. I hope those being recognized will be at the December meeting to be recognized. (We normally have our volunteer recognition in November but it was changed to December since many of you were in Houston at Quilt Festival on the day of the November meeting.)

We all lead busy lives, but I hope you can make time to support our community service projects. The work we do is so important and we need the support of all our members. Stop by the community service table at Guild meetings to find out how you may help.

Executive Committee MeetingWednesday, October 25, 2006

Marie Zaczkowski opened the meeting at 7:10pm with Rhonda Anderson, Valerie Hubbard, Theresa Cunningham, Carol Dickschat, and Valerie Salter in attendance.

Minutes of the September meeting were approved via email. Marie presented tentative dates and locations for future Board meetings. The next meeting will be on Thursday, November 30th at REI .

Rhonda Anderson reported that there was a good turn-out for the Cover for Kids workshop and the next workshop will be Saturday, November 25th. She also mentioned that she still needed names (nominations) for Outstanding Volunteer[s], to be turned in no later

than the November Guild meeting. Valerie Hubbard reported that there are now

Rhonda Anderson moved that the proceeds from the 2007 Miniature Quilt Auc-tion be divided 50/50, between Newborns In Need and Captain Hope’s Kids organizations. Carol Dickschat seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved.

It is time to party!! The Stock-ing Stuffing Party will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Richardson at 319 La Salle Drive on December 8th at 9:30 AM. Please sign up at the November General Meeting or let me know if you plan to attend. My home phone number is 214-341-2203. We can use all the help we can get. I will need all the stockings that are still out to be turned in so that they can be used for the party.I could still use toothbrushes and toothpaste to put in the stockings.I would especially like to thank Marcia Shurtleff for her never ending hard work, encouragement, and devotion for this project. I would also like to thank the Sew What’s for their contribution of so many finished stockings. Thank you for allowing me to keep the project going with your support and help.

Well there is a buzz going around, something about a Festival. Something to do with quilts. Could it be Dallas Quilt Celebration Festival of Holidays 2007? I think it is.

Thanksgiving is over, and now it is time for Christ-mas. Only three months until Show Time. I am sure everyone is frantically working on their entries for the show. The Committee remains hard at work on the final preparations for the show as well.

Show t-shirts are available in the Guild Store. Don’t forget to pick your show shirt at the next meeting.

We’re getting many inquires about entries, so be sure to get yours in early. Don’t wait until the last minute, we are sticking to the limit of 400 entries. We are also serious about avoiding withdrawn entries, so we will not accept pencil drawings or photos of stacks of fabric with your entries. Read the rules carefully; make sure your entry is in accord with the rules. If you have any questions or comments about entries, please contact Shelly Goodwyn, Entries Chair, or myself.

Happy Holidays to everyone!Show Chair.

Now that you have received your membership packet, con-taining the 2007 Directory, please remember not to just throw away your old directory.

To safe guard against identity theft you shred your own envelops and other information, think about the amount of information in the direc-tory. We would appreciate it if you would either shred your old directories or bring them to the Guild meeting, where there will be a box for old directories. We will have these shredded for you.

Just a quick update to let everyone know that as of this writing, I only have eight (8) packets left!! Blocks are starting to come in and they look great. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to be part of all the fun.

Remember, the blocks that are submitted will be judged by our quilt show judges and the winners re-ceive ribbons and monetary awards. All the blocks are assembled into the Guild’s Keeper Quilt.

Have loads of fun while developing your very own vintage design of your favorite holiday. Good Luck!

Appraisals for New and Old QuiltsQuilt Celebration 2007 will have two certified ap-

praisers at the show to value your quilts and garments.Having an appraisal for your quilt is very important

for insurance purposes. If your item should be lost or damaged, in transit, without written proof a shipper will most likely dispute the insurance value of the item. This also holds true for items in your possession should your home (heaven forbid) suffer a disaster and quilts are part of the loss.

Appraisals are $40.00 per item and are scheduled every one-half hour on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You do not have to be present for the appraisal, but are welcome to attend. (An appraisal is not a critique of your work.) If your quilt is entered in this years’ show it can be appraised where it is hanging.

To make an appointment for an appraisal fill out the appraisal form, included in your entry package, and send it to me along with your check and a self-addressed stamped envelope. A confirmation letter will be sent.

I am pleased to announce that the proceeds from the 2007 miniature quilt auction will have two benefi-ciaries: Newborns in Need and Captain Hope’s Kids. Newborns in Need is a charity organized to take care of sick and needy babies and their families, in cases of crisis, helping where help is needed. They provide sup-port for infants needing clothing, blankets, layettes and other items to comfort these very tiny living beings. Visit their website at www.nebornsinneed.org/dallastx for more information about the organization and other ways you can help. Our other recipient is an organi-zation that works with homeless children. Captain Hope’s Kids serves approximately 10,000 children in more than 42 homeless shelters in the North Texas area each year. On any given night in North Texas more than 1,000 children will fall asleep in homeless and domestic violence shelters. Of those over 300 will be babies, infants and toddlers. In 2005, Captain Hope’s Kids distributed an estimated $325,000 worth of critically needed items to a collaborative network of homeless service providers in North Texas. Visit their website at www.captainhope.org. I know that we can make a difference in the lives of the people in our community by making our Miniature Quilt Auction a success. Thank you for your support and participation.

This month I am appealing for help closing up the library after meetings. I could use three volunteers to help me push the book trucks back to Kaplan audito-rium. Special Exhibition at The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, Austin, TexasOctober 28, 2006-January 7, 2007

Miss Ima Hogg (1882-1975) was a visionary collector, preservationist, and philanthropist. To highlight her vision as a collector, this special exhibition, for the first time, brings together an extraordinary selection of Miss Ima’s quilts that range in date from the late 1700’s to the early 1900’s.

The only daughter of Texas Governor James Stephen Hogg, Miss Ima fol-lowed her father’s example of public service. She involved herself in a wide range of philanthropic projects and expanded her interest to include historic preservation.

This exhibition showcases twenty-five quilts Miss Ima collected representing traditional American quilting – pieced, appliquéd, whole cloth, patriotic, and album quilts, many with evocative pattern names such as Double Irish Chain, Flying Geese, Mariner’s Compass and Log Cabin. These quilts are examples of one of the most popular and enduring folk art traditions in America and each testifies to Miss Ima’s keen eye for excellence and passion for collecting.

Miss Ima’s quilts are mainly from the nineteenth century, though two of the whole cloth quilts date from the American Colonial period. One pieced quilt, the Basket quilt, likely was made in the first half of the twentieth century. These dates are imprecise because so little documentation exists about any of the quilts’ provenance. Only one of the quilts is signed and dated; it is the pieced Pineapple quilt signed “Hannah Reist 1849”. Four others have names or a date but not both. For example, one friendship quilt features sixty names but no dates, and a whole cloth quilt, though undated, is inscribed with two names, presumably those of a husband and wife. Therefore, what is known about each of these quilts must be drawn from the quilts themselves-from fabrics,

We appreciate all of the quilts you have donated to Ronald McDonald House (RMcD), however, we are in desperate need of additional quilts for our other two charities. The RMcD children are staying at the facil-ity longer, so there is a reduced turn-over of children. Accordingly, the closet stays well stocked from month-to-month. They are in need; however, of larger quilts for older boys.

The other two charities; however, are fluid. The Dal-las Children’s Advocacy Center is in constant need of quilts. You would be surprised how many children ar-rive at that facility; when you realize why they are there it breaks your heart. They have either been abused, have witnessed abuse, or have witnessed a crime, such as murder! How horrible it must be to be taken from their home and be in the care of foster parents, espe-cially after the trauma they have encountered. Some children are taken in the middle of the night, with the clothes on their backs and nothing else.

The third charity is Vogel Alcove (Center). This is a daycare center/pre-school for homeless children. They usually arrive with nothing and are presented with a nap quilt, which they take when they move on. The children are generally homeless, either living in a shel-ter or free housing as a temporary (hopefully) situation. They are the victims of a bad situation as well. It is not their fault that they are homeless; if you think about it - many people are only one step from being homeless. Lose of job, storm damage, fire, etc. could leave a fam-ily you know homeless. We need to give them a sense of normalcy at a troubling time in their lives. They are at the facility for a maximum of 120 days. Due to this the Center needs 700+ quilts per year for each child to receive a security blanket. And, yes, they do take own-ership of these quilts and take their quilt with them.

Remember - as you turn on the furnace in your home and throw another quilt on your bed, you are very fortunate to have these things at your disposal. Please donate quilts for those less fortunate! Thank you so much. You do not know how much your donations are appreciated!

prints, styles, colors, patterns, and quilting techniques. The quilts highlighted in this exhibition are a direct

result of the philanthropic and preservation efforts of Miss Ima Hogg. The legendary Miss Ima Hogg once remarked that she had heard that collecting was a disease and that she thought she must have had it from childhood. She was an enthusiastic and seasoned collector, devoting more that fifty years to acquiring American furniture, paintings, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and glass. In the 1960’s, she even acquired historic Texas structures, including two dating from the 1830’s.

If you are visiting Austin between now and January 7, 2007, plan a visit to this wonderful museum and this special exhibit. (On my first visit there, I spent the entire day!) Admission to the museum, including this special exhibit, is $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for seniors/military, $3 for youth ages 5-19, free for ages 4 and under. The museum is located at 1800 N. Congress Ave, at the corner of M.L. King, Jr. Blvd. in downtown Austin. For more information, call 512/936-8746 or go online at http://www.thestoryoftexas.com/the_museum/temporary_exhibit.html

rEtrEat and guild workshops

Well the deadline is past and yes we have enough retreaters to get the Har-

bour Room again this coming retreat. I can’t believe how many new retreaters we have this time. Several guild members already have their costumes for the Saturday night contest. I have even talked to a couple that have their projects packed. For those of you that are not going to be able to join us - we will have pic-tures to show you and I bet we will even think about you while we are gone (OK maybe not).

Programs and Workshops

December 7th– Mary StoriWhen you read this, Thanksgiving will most likely

soon be over with the rest of the holiday season loom-ing. What better time to treat yourself to some quality quilt time! Our speaker this month is Mary Stori, who will be speaking on the process of embellishing your quilts and wearable designs.

Mary is known for her beautiful trapunto handwork, her funny quilts, garments and, most especially, her use of embellishments. Mary began teaching herself to quilt as therapy while recovering from back surgery in the mid-1980’s. Since then, her award-winning work has appeared in numerous national shows, and has designed garments for four Fairfield Fashion Shows. Aside from appearing on several popular quilting television productions, Mary has written articles and has been featured in scores of quilt publications, and published several books of her own on quilting and embellishment techniques. Her work is often humor-ous, generously embellished, and displays fine hand quilting. She loves the challenge of creating one-of-a-kind pieces. Thursday’s lecture will be Let it Shine.

Her Friday workshop will be “Penny Power.” You’ll create a bead embellished wool collage. (I’m thinking this could make a nice pillow to give a special friend for Christmas.) Saturday will be a smorgasbord of beading techniques in “Bead Bonanza”. Learn her techniques for beaded bindings and surface beading.

As incentive to treat yourself, to a day of holiday stress relief we are running one of our rare workshop sales: $25.00 for members ($30.00 for non-members.)

January 4 - Diane GaudynskiWe’ll start 2007 with a bang! Ms. Gaudynski is an

award-winning machine quilter from Wisconsin. Her style is traditional yet contemporary. Visit her website at http://www.dianegaudynski.net/ for a gander at her gorgeous work. She is Richard Larson’s idol. Does that tell you anything about her skill??

choosing, drawing, marking and coordinating the quilting designs, expressing your own style with quilting de-signs as the final touch. Tips on machine quilting will also be offered (and since this meeting is the deadline for show entries…)

Friday’s workshop will be “Free-Motion Fabric Art.” In this class, you’ll use a piece of hand-dyed or batik fabric as your inspiration for a whole-cloth free-motion quilting design. Saturday, we’ll break out of our respective stipple-quilting ruts and learn “The Fine Art of Background Quilting” as you discover a gorgeous variety of tech-niques to use on your next quilt! Space for these workshops are filling FAST – be sure to reserve your spot now!

February 1 - Carol DoakThis month, we present the QUEEN of paper-pieced designs – Carol Doak. The lecture is a brand new,

titled “Reach for the Stars.” Stars have been a recurring theme in Carol’s quilts and this lecture celebrates them. Friday’s workshop will be Paper Piecing Tricks of the Trade, a treat for experienced and novice paper-piecers. You learn from the lady who literally wrote the book. Saturday’s workshop is “Floral Stash Quilt.” You’ll want to visit Ms. Doak’s website at www.caroldoak.com to see the lovely sample she has posted. This is a foundation-pieced quilt design that takes on a lovely English garden flair. What better way to welcome spring?

In related business – if you attend a FABULOUS lecture or workshop and think that your fellow Guild members would enjoy hearing and learning from this person, please, get their contact infor-mation and pass it on to me.

If you see a teacher on the list who is an all-time fav and you’d like to help with “hosting” them (taking them to/from the airport, taking them to lunch or dinner, etc.) please let me know. As much as Marie and I love spending quality time with these lovely people, we’d love to share the responsibilities. Chauffering speakers around has gained me many new

friends and lots of personal insights into how they create.
