Do you believe it, it is time to start making plans to go toour annual retreat ~ January 11 through January 15, 2007.

Your answers to last year’s retreat questionnaire hasbeen very helpful and we are trying to accomodate asmany of your ideas as possible.

The theme is 1960s. The t-shirt design has beenchosen and it will be in those wonderful bright colors of the60s: tangerine (orange), azalea (bright pink), key lime(green), violet (light purple), and, of course, red. By theway, was it “peace” or “piece”?

Our retreat quilt shop this next retreat is going to beTexas Quiltworks. Wonder what wonderful fabrics they aregoing to be bringing?

Several of you have asked if we could have a fullbreakfast and no lunch; full breakfast and full lunch; orcontinental breakfast and full lunch (like in the past) - well,Tanglewood Resort is going to give each of us theseoptions. No, it is not all or nothing - we will each make ourown decision as to what meals we want to eat: breakfast, lunch and dinner; breakfast, no lunch and dinner;continental breakfast, lunch and dinner. The only costdifference would be if you choose 3 full meals a day, which

Every year, the guild receives applications for an annual grant. TheEndowment Committee recommends to the Guild Board theirselections. This year, two grants will be awarded.

New England Quilt Museum has requested funding for a CD catalogto coincide with a new exhibit called “Happy Birthday America”.Everyone can enjoy the quilts assembled from the Bicentennial and theCentennial Birthdays. Images of about 30 quilts are cataloged on theCD with full page images and details. The exhibit at the New EnglandQuilt Museum starts August 17 thru October 22, 2006 in Lowell,Mass nequiltmuseum.org. Then the quilts move to Paducah fromNovember 18, 2006 until January 20, 2007 quiltmuseum.org

Secondly, from The University of Northern Iowa, Dr. Marybeth C.Stalp, Assistant Professor of Sociology seeks funding for hermanuscript, “Quilting: The Fabric of Evryday Life”. Our guild willpay for the color images in this work. This work attempts todocument: the process of quilting and the people who do it, a look atquilting as it exists outside of the United States, and describe a cultureclearly produced and dominated by women. Progress is continuingwith a deadline for completion of December 2006.

Both the CD and manuscription will be available in our library assoon as possible. The Quilter’s Guild of Dallas, Iinc. receivesrecognition from these organizations and is associated with thesequilt-related projets forever! For prior listings of grants, our websitedescribes the funding in the past years, along with an application forthe future.

Technical questions can be answered by ShellyGoodwyn

In order to keep abreast of our Guild’s programs, I haveordered books by scheduled speakers. These two booksrelate to the speakers for September and October.

In September, Barb Vlack will speak and teach on thequilt software program Electric Quilt. She published abook in 1999 called EQ4 Magic, which I have purchased, even though Barb will be discussing the newer version,EQ5. Presumably she will be able to bring readers alongon the changes.

October’s speaker, Laura Wasilowski, is the author ofFusing Fun; Fast and Fearless Art Quilts. This book, withfull-color photographs, offers general instructions onLaura’s fusing technique, directions for seven wall-sizeprojects, and a photo gallery for inspiration.

I hope these books will help increase members’enjoyment of Guild programs.

We are so lucky that we have had thefamilies and friends that we have to be here in a greatorganization celebrating what we love to do. Pieceful Friends Friendship Group

About three years ago, the Quilters Unique Friendship Group wasbursting its seams. It had grown too large to easily meet in members’homes, so they capped the group at 30. In order to offer an alterna-tive to quilters in the Richardson area, a handful of Quilters Uniquemembers formed a new group and named it Pieceful Friends. At firstthere were only five. It was a quiet sit-n-sew gathering, with no realagenda. Since then the group has grown to 12 - and still has noagenda!

Pieceful Friends meets in home the second Tuesday evening ofevery month. The program is to sit and do handwork, cut fabric orjust flip through old quilter magazines and chat. If someone arriveswith nothing to do, Rhonda Anderson always offers something tobusy those idle hands, like cutting scraps or sewing binding forCovers for Kids.

This past April, the group ventured on their first weekend togetherto Le Retreat in Gainsville. Yup, that’s the same Gainesville that wasin the news recently for having had a terrible Spring hailstorm. And itwas - of course- the very weekend of the Pieceful Friends retreat!Windows were shattered, winds howled, and all watched for torna-does. Other than that; however, and some severly damaged cars, itwas a weekend enjoyed by all. Even in a storm, you know, there’ssomething warm and peaceful about sewing with friends.

August Quilters of Gee’s BendOn August 3, 2006, the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas

welcomes a group of quilters from Gee’s Bend,Alabama. The small rural community known as Gee’sBend is named after Joseph Gee, the first white man tostake a claim therein the early 1800s. In 1850, the Geefamily sold the plantation to Mark Pettway. After theCivil War, the freed slaves took the name Pettway andcontinued to work the land as tenant farmers, eventuallypurchasing farms from the federal government in the1940s.

In 2003, all the living quilters of Gee’s Bend (morethan fifty women), founded the Gee’s Bend QuiltCollective. The Collective is owned and operated by thewomen of Gee’s Bend and serves as the exclusivemeans of selling and marketing their quilts. In June, a “sequel” to the blockbuster Gee’s Bendexhibit, entitled “Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of theQuilt” opens at the Museum of Fine Arts – Houston(www.MFAH.org) and runs through September 4, 2006before embarking on its’ own nationwide tour. For further information about the quilters of Gee’s Bend,go to their web site, www.quiltsofgeesbend.com, or lookfor these books: The Quilts of Gee’s Bend and Gee’sBend: The Women and Their Quilts.

“Under the Magnifying Glass”

As most of you know, each year the American Quilter’sSociety holds the Ultimate Guild Challenge in which quiltguilds are invited to compete to win $5,000. Even thoughthe competition is stiff, our guild has a lot of talent. Wehave won it before and we can win it again! This year’stheme, Under the Magnifying Glass, will stir your creativejuices.

We have only two rules this year:

1. Incorporate the theme “Under the Magnifying Glass”.2. Quilt must be 54” in width by 42” in height.

We have Judy Kriehn to thank for this intriguing theme.Under the Magnifying Glass evokes all sorts of imagesfrom the scientific (drop of water, hairs on a caterpillar’sleg, skin cells) to the inspirational (flower petals, snowflake, a butterfly’s wing, grandchild’s hand). Turncommonplace items into the spectacular!

The Ultimate Guild Challenge is a separate showcategory with its own prize money and all entrants must beGuild members. More details will follow in futurenewsletters.

Now, get out that magnifying glass and start inspectingeveryday items in your world.
