WELCOME HOME TO JESUS THE DIVINE WORD CHURCH!
As we interact responsibly with one another during this pandemic, we at Jesus the Divine Word welcome all who are new to our faith
community, returning to the Catholic Church, searching for a spiritual home or simply visiting with us at this time. We are glad you are with us. We understand the difficulties associated with these days and want you to feel welcome and at home whether you
are with us physically or through live-stream. It is a blessing to have you here.
If you are interested in learning more about our parish or registering as a parishioner, we invite you to contact our pastor, Fr. John Dakes at [email protected] or any member of our parish staff at
410-414-8304. We also invite you to view other areas of our website - www.jesusdivineword.org – and to download our registration form, the link of
which is on the front page of the website. We look forward to meeting and getting to know you. Welcome!
Dear Friends,
On this fourth and final Sunday of Advent our attention turns from John the Baptist to Mary; five days before our celebration of Christmas we hear of God sending his messenger, the angel Gabriel, to a young unmarried girl in Nazareth. The angel’s word must have seemed inconceivable to Mary at first. She is told the Lord is with her; told not to be afraid for she has found favor with God; told that God has chosen her for the surprising task of giving birth to God’s Son whom she is to name Jesus. At this time in her life, it was impossible for her to conceive a child; she was not yet married. She could hardly believe her ears, yet she believed; believed God’s messenger; believed God. God, who created all things, had promised salvation to his people, and now, by way of his messenger heralding good news, God is fulfilling his promise through a lowly virgin.
Mary lived in a land of turmoil and cruelty at the time she conceived Jesus. Herod the Great was coming to the end of a long career, but only after much bloodshed and terror. Darkness filled the land, and into that darkness a Child would be born, a Child who would be great and to whom God would give “the throne of David his father” (1:32b). This good news, though unexpected must have brought great joy to this lowly virgin, such joy that Luke soon has her singing God’s praises in the prayer we have come to call the Magnificat: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord . . .” (1:46).
Have you ever wondered if God still sends messengers to herald good news as did long ago? Well, he does. Today’s messengers are not announcing Christ’s birth, though, that already occurred. Today’s messengers announce instead God’s abiding presence, God’s infinite grace, God’s loving care. In the darkness of our world today’s messengers are announcing how the Light has shattered the darkness; they announce words of consolation just as Gabriel did in Nazareth. Today’s messengers are you and me. To whom is God sending you this Christmas season? To whom are you being called to offer hope, to lift up, to reveal the mighty strength of God?
Peace and blessings, Fr. John

LIVING THE WORD Week of December 20
Theme: Yes, Lord!

Challenge:
With courage and trust, echo Mary’s “yes” to the will of God.
WELCOME HOME - COVID UPDATE With the rise of COVID cases in the state Governor Hogan has changed the guidelines for churches and all religious establishments. Church capacity has been reduced to
50%. Since we have not reached 50% capacity due to our faithful following of CDC, State and local guidelines requiring social distancing of 6 feet between
individuals/households and the use of facecloths/masks for everyone at Mass there are no changes at JDW at this time. We continue to take seriously the physical and
spiritual health of our parishioners and want to be sure that at no time is someone at risk while in our church. Everyone’s participation in following all the guidelines as well as the instruction of the ushers is essential for this to occur. This includes keeping
facemasks on when approaching the minister for Communion. DO NOT lower your masks until having stepped away from the minister. After placing the Eucharist in your mouth, then please put your mask on again. For further
information regarding participation please see the parish website. Until further notice the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and
Holy Days of Obligation is still in effect. As a reminder, weekday Masses are celebrated Tuesday through Friday at 8:00 AM
with Saturday Morning Mass at 9:00 AM. Sunday Masses are celebrated at 5:00 PM on Saturday and 8:00 and 10:00 AM on Sunday. Doors open 30 minutes before
Mass. Parishioners may choose to sit in the church (as long as there is room) or go directly to Doran Hall. Both the 5 PM and the 10 AM Masses are live streamed. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated on Wednesday evenings from
7:00 – 8:00 PM and Saturday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:30 PM between the priest vesting sacristy and Fr. John’s office. Confessions are celebrated either face-to-face or
with anonymity, all depending on the desire of the penitent. Appointments are also welcomed.
Parish offices are open, though all depending on the day of the week some staff are working remotely. Office hours are Monday through Friday 9 AM – 3 PM. The
best way to reach staff is still through e-mail. All appointments need to be set up in advance through a phone call or e-mail that proper safety procedures can be
guaranteed. Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding.

MAKING a SPIRITUAL ACT of COMMUNION 1. If you are not ready to return to the parish for Mass, we invite you to join us for our live streamed Mass at either 5:00 PM on Saturday or 10:00 AM Sunday (rebroadcast at Noon Sunday) or 2. Gather with others in your home and begin your prayer with the Sign of the Cross 3. Take time to read and reflect upon the readings for the Fourth Sunday of Advent - 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16; Romans 16:25-27; Luke 1:26-38 4. Share your prayers intentions aloud or offer them quietly in your hearts 5. Pray the Lord's Prayer (Our Father) 6. Offer the following Prayer of Spiritual Communion:
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the
Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist.
I love you above all things, and desire to receive you
into my soul.
Since I am unable to receive you
sacramentally at this time,
come spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen. (An Act of Spiritual Communion by St. Alphonsus Liguori)
7. Close with the Sign of the Cross
CRITICALLY ILL or HOSPITALIZED during the CORONAVIRUS?
Caring for the sick is an important ministry of the Church. In this ministry the Church prays for the sick, visits the
sick, provides the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum (one’s last Communion), if a person is dying.
Though we are living in very unusual times at the present due to the coronavirus, we are still committed to ensuring that no one who is sick will be neglected.
If a person is critically ill or dying we are asking that a family member notify the parish office as soon as possible by calling 410-414-8304 and speaking with
either Fr. John (ext. 11) or Bobbie Woollen (ext. 10).
A reminder, too, that the parish emergency phone number (to be used only when someone is critically ill or dying) is 443-624-2692.
Please call only, do not text (it’s a flip phone). Please note, too, that clergy are required to follow certain directives at the hospital and nursing home at this time
and that those directives could change. Thank you.

BLESSING OF FAMILIES
Next Sunday,
December 27th, is the Feast of the Holy Family
of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. While we honor
the sacred family in which the Savior of the World lived, we also
seek to honor our own families, especially in
this Year of St. Joseph, the Spouse of Mary and foster father of Jesus.
The other purpose of this feast is to present the Holy Family as the
model for all Christian families. Our family life becomes sanctified when
we live the life of the Church
within our homes. After all Masses next
weekend we will offer a blessing for each of our
families present and live-streaming, not
matter the make-up of your family.
2021 CALENDARS AVAILABLE
Church Calendars for the Year 2021 are now
available in the narthex of the
church.
LITURGY & PRAYER
BLESSING OF THE BABY JESUS
Today we begin a new tradition at Jesus the Divine
Word, the blessing of the
Baby Jesus that is a part of each household’s Nativity Scene.
Begun by Pope St. Paul VI in 1969 and known as Bambinelli Sunday, the blessing will take place
after Communion. Simply bring the figurine of the baby Jesus to Mass with you or have it present
when livestreaming with us.
CELEBRATE THE GRACE OF RECONCILIATION
through the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession
Preparing the Way of the Lord at Christmas includes preparing our hearts and our lives for the King of Peace, Jesus Christ. No matter our sins, God wants to free us
from them through the gift of his mercy and forgiveness.
You are invited to celebrate the joy of God’s mercy and forgiveness in
the Sacrament of Reconciliation/
Confession
this evening, December 20th beginning at
6:30 pm.
Four priests will be available to celebrate
the sacrament.

DECORATING OUR CHURCH
FOR CHRISTMAS
Volunteers needed to help with decorating
for Christmas. Decorating our church for Christmas will take place this year after the
10 AM Mass today
Sunday, December 20th
Due to Covid, we would like to have individual families volunteer for
specific decorating needs, e.g., assembling
and decorating the narthex Christmas tree or
assembling the Doran Hall narthex Nativity.
Also, we really need men to help with the heavy lifting (bringing up the
boxes from the basement, assembling
the church Nativity, and hanging the wreaths in the Narthex windows).
Social distancing and
mask guidelines will be followed.
Please contact
Rob and Virginia Soboleski to volunteer
or ask questions: [email protected]
Blessing of
Christmas Gifts (before opening them)
Every person should hold in their lap one gift
addressed to them. Then pray together:
God of love, we realize that all gifts
come from You. We thank you for them with all our hearts!
Now, one-by-one each person offers the following prayer:
Please bless (name of gift-giver) for making this gift possible.
Conclude by praying the following together:
Jesus, our Savior, the reason we share gifts today
is to celebrate your birth. May these gifts remind us
of your generous love for us. Let us never be greedy,
but willing to share with others the good things we receive. Amen.

PARISH HAPPENINGS
“As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Greek-speaking Christians complained against the Hebrew-speaking Christians, saying that their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, ‘It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.’ The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 6:1-5). Acts of the Apostles says that Stephen was a man filled with grace and power, who worked great wonders among the people. Certain Jews, members of the Syna-gogue of Roman Freedmen, debated with Stephen, but proved no match for the wisdom and spirit with which he spoke. They persuaded others to make the charge of blasphe-my against him. He was seized and carried before the Sanhedrin.
In his speech, Stephen recalled God’s guidance through Israel’s history, as well as Israel’s idolatry and disobe-dience. He then claimed that his persecutors were showing this same spirit. “…you always oppose the holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors” (Acts 7:51b). Stephen’s speech brought anger from the crowd. “But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heav-en and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and he said, ‘Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ …They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. …As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ …‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them’” (Acts 7:55-56, 58a, 59, 60b).
