COMMANDER’S

CORNER Death Dealer Nation, I couldn’t be more proud of the Leaders, Soldiers and Families for the discipline, tenacity and teamwork displayed over the last several months. As I have grown to expect, our Soldiers and Families are performing very well and leading across our Brigade. December is a short month for the battalion. Our tank and bradley crews are conducting training on their vehicles to finalize our preparations for gunnery in January. Our sniper section began assessment and selection for sniper candidates. And the battalion is leaning hard toward some much earned leave. I would like to thank all of our volunteers who have put in countless hours assisting our Soldiers and Families during the Thanksgiving holiday. Certainly you all have made a lasting impression on the lives your have touched. I encourage all of you to leverage time with the family, reach out and take advantage of the many family programs coming to you this month, and please be safe as we enter this holiday season. A hearty welcome to our new members and a fond farewell to our departing veterans; you will always have a home in the Death Dealers. v/r Joshua D. Wright LTC, IN Commander 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment Death Dealers!!! Mortus Et Destructo!!! COMM: 719-526-5291 BB: 719-337-9884 [email protected]

CSM’s CORNER

Death Dealer Nation, As we fast approach the Christmas block leave, this can be a hurried, stressful time for all. As you make your plans please remember that safety in the execution of those plans is of the outmost importance. Soldiers I ask that you think about the following: Our job is not different than our civilian counterparts, we are expected to come to work on time all the time, perform at a high level in all aspects and receive few accolades for a job well done. However, as Death Dealer Soldiers we don’t hang our hat on excessive praise. We do the job because we believe in the profession of arms. Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III said it best “Soldiers will have to be more disciplined and take on more responsibility, especially noncommissioned officers.” I challenge every Soldier and Leader to be the moral, legal and ethical compass of their unit. Bottom line, this is who we are, and this is what we should aspire to be A PROFESSIONAL!!! Congrats goes out to our NCO of the Quarter (SGT Clayton-HHC) and Soldier of the Quarter ( SPC Vonedwins-A co) and a shot out to the BN SAMC candidates(SSG Marzan and SSG Castillo-A co) proud of them all!!!! Captain Paul M. Garcia assumed command of Dog Company on the 22nd of May 2012. Paul is married to Victoria Garcia and they are from the small Northern New Mexico town of Taos. Paul and Victoria became acquainted while participating in the Taos high School Mariachi Band where they recorded their first Mariachi album together. After High School, Paul enlisted in the Army and they were soon married. Eighteen years later, they have three beautiful daughters: Gabriella 14, Isabella 10, and Daniella 7. The Garcia’s have one dog (Jewels), one cat (Tiggy), and four egg laying hens. The Garcia’s enjoy spending time together, volunteering, gardening, hiking, biking, fishing, vacationing at Disney, camping, and dancing. The Garcia family love Mexican traditions expressed through music, songs, and dances characteristic of different ethnic groups and regions of Mexico. Over five years ago, the Garcia family began volunteering with Ballet Folklorico de la Raza of Colorado Springs. The mission of the dance group is to empower our community and to educate the general public by providing a greater understanding and appreciation for Mexican culture and folklore through music, dance and traditional art forms.

CHAOS

NEWS

AARON R. JOHNSTON DAN R. YOKOYAMA SFC, USA CPT, AR Company First Sergeant Commanding

Soldiers and Families of Chaos Company,

Seasons Greetings from the Chaos Family Team! As Chaos Company continues to work off the additional

pounds from the extra helpings of turkey from Thanksgiving through rigorous morning physical training, the

Company is already gearing up for the holiday block leave period and (you guessed it!) GUNNERY. The

past month has flown by with its shorter work weeks and long weekends due to training holidays.

However, that did not prevent the Company from leading from the front and continuing our excellent track

record of completing all tasks to standard and on time.

The past month included several key events to include the completion of several of the Warhorse Brigade

Soldier task validation exercises. The events that the Company completed included a 12-mile road march

completed within a four hour time limit on 02 NOV 12. Soldiers were required to wear all of their combat

gear to include the following: army combat helmet, m4 rifle, ballistic vests w/ plates, eye protection, gloves,

and a camelbak with at least one liter of water. In a great display of determination and motivation, many of

the Company’s soldiers were able to complete the 12-miler in under three hours! Special congratulations

are in store for SPC Connely, SPC Randal, and SPC Boyatt who were the three fastest soldiers in the

Company. Soldiers also successfully executed a day/night land navigation course and Army Physical

Fitness Test. The Company continues to prepare for the next event – a five mile run that must be

completed in under 45 minutes. If you weren’t already impressed with your Soldiers, you should be now.

Also, the Family Readiness Group, led by Tessa Hebert, coordinated for family members to accompany

their Soldiers during the final stretch of the 12-mile foot march. The FRG also went through great lengths

to ensure that Soldiers and Families returning from the 12-mile foot march were welcomed with a great

breakfast which included drinks, fruits, yogurt, bagels, muffins, egg/sausage/bacon casseroles, coffee, etc.

A special thanks goes out to Jessica Dickson for her contributions as the FRG treasurer and Mrs. Pino for

volunteering her time to take pictures of and cheer on the Soldiers at various waypoints along the foot

march. The FRG recently hosted a meeting on 29 NOV 12 where important information was put out to

both soldiers and spouses. It was awesome to welcome new faces to the meeting as the Company

continues to build upon the strength of its FRG. The Chaos FRG can be reached at

[email protected].

Currently, Chaos Company is focusing on M1A2 SEP OPNET. The OPNET is a two and a half week long

training event that trains our Soldiers to effectively operate their Tanks. The Soldiers selected for the

training go through extensive training on all of the Tank’s systems and crew member responsibilities. Also,

in case you Chaos Family members were wondering; we are doing all that we can to ensure that your

Soldiers stay safe during the block leave period through the conduct of vehicle inspections, counseling

from their leadership, and review of their travel plans. The goal is to have all Soldiers and their Families

enjoy their well-deserved vacation time and return to the Company safely.

November also marked several promotions. Congratulations to First Lieutenants Dickson, McKnight, and

Aitken; SSG Nwosu; and SGT Easley on your promotions. We at the Company are proud of each of these

Soldiers and expect them to continue to execute at the highest levels of performance a.k.a. the Chaos

Company level of performance. CHAOS! KILL ‘EM ALL!

DEMON DOG

NEWS

Soldiers and Families of Dog Company November was another great and prosperous month for the Dog Company family. We received our tanks and attachments as we continue to prepare for tank gunnery in January. Dog Company’s ranks continue to swell as we welcome our newly assigned mechanics, medics, and fire support team. Unfortunately, we must also bid farewell to SPC Relech and family. They will truly be missed! The Demon Dog family continues to grow as SPC Ulissess and Viviana Irechetta welcomed Arianna into the world on the 15th of November. Additionally, SGT Steven and Tracy Summers are expecting a baby girl on or about the 24th of December, and SPC Joshua and Jessica Carrington are expecting a baby boy in January of 2013. Dog Company is also very proud of 2LT Fong’s promotion to 1LT, SGT Ordonez’s promotion to SSG, SPC Burkman’s promotion to SGT, and PV2 Majors’ promotion to PFC. A promotion well deserved. An occasion worth celebrating. Congratulations on the success. From 0830-1200hrs on the 17th of November, over thirty Dog Company Soldiers and family members volunteered at the Springs Rescue Mission to help the less fortunate. The volunteers distributed 100 Thanksgiving Holiday food boxes, over 202 frozen turkeys, and sorted tons of donated clothing and house wares. Without volunteers, there are no events. Simple as that. So, we truly appreciate the time and effort, the skills and abilities that volunteers bring to every Dog Company activity. At 0630 on the 12th of December, Dog Company will execute an approved off post PT event at Garden of the Gods and at 1800hrs, Dog Company will celebrate our FRG Holiday Party with Chaos and Fox Companies at the Colorado Springs American Legion on North Academy and Jeannine Drive. One of the best gifts you can give someone is the gift of thanking them for being a part of your life. 1SG Bushman and I are extremely thankful for all the hard work that our Soldiers and families commit to Dog Company. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a new year filled with peace and happiness. Thank you. DEMON DOGS!!!

HEADHUNTER NEWS

SAMMIE L. CLARK 1SG, USA Company First Sergeant

DAVID M. PIERCE CPT, FA Commanding

Soldiers and Families of Head Hunter Company, After a great Thanksgiving Holiday the Head Hunter company started the month of December off at a fast pace. It has only been two weeks of work before block leave, but each platoon and section worked hard to prepare for the training that will begin immediately following leave. The Scouts have been working many hours in the simulator to prepare their Bradley crews for the Gunnery training and testing. They’ve conducted classes to sharpen their skills and become proficient in tasks that they have not used over the past Iraq/Afghanistan deployments, and diligently continue to prepare their equipment for the field. Our Mortars have spent this month assisting the company in many time consuming tasks while simultaneously training on their mission of delivering mortar fires from both tracked vehicles and while dismounted. All the training and preparation will lead to a validation live fire that will support Tanks, Bradleys, and dismounted troops in the southern portion of the Fort Carson training area. The Medics trained and rehearsed establishing aid stations that will treat both real injuries and simulated injuries during the upcoming training. Every Soldier has worked hard to continue treating all of the Battalion’s Soldiers on a daily basis while training for casualty operations. Our mechanic team has executed training, repairs, and preventative maintenance that would take any other team twice their size much more time. It is an immense responsibility to maintain a tank, bradleys, armored HMMWVs, mortar carriers, several different type of type of tracked vehicles, and many different sizes of cargo trucks – 55 vehicles in total. As with much of the Battalion, they’ve worked late nights, but it’s this hard work that will allow our Company to deploy to the field at full strength. The Battalion staff sections have continued to work behind the scenes to make our training possible while de-conflicting the multiple events happening simultaneously. In a period of two weeks they have completed planning, resourcing, and began execution that will culminate in over two weeks of gunnery training, two weeks of Platoon STX lanes, a Battalion deployment to Pinion Canyon Maneuver Site, and then finally a month long deployment to the National Training Center (Fort Irwin, CA). We would like to welcome the new Head Hunter Soldiers and Families to HHC – MAJ Stanley, 1LT Olmstead, SFC Larson, SSG Nelson, SPC Armer, SPC Cochran, SPC Pritchard, PFC Callahan, PFC Funk, PFC Greene, PFC Johnson, PV2 Truscott, PVT McVae, and PVT Shinee. We say farewell to 1SG Fulford as he begins a new job in Fort Polk, La. and welcome 1SG Clark as the new Head Hunter 7. Congratulations to the following individuals and their families. At the end of the month they each received a well deserved promotion. CPT Boehmer, CPT Bourda, CPT Bugg, CPT Cattle, CPT Takes, CPT Kunkle, CPT Perry, SSG Borque, SSG Koier, SGT Fontenot, SGT Elizondo, SGT Vasbinder, and SGT Ibarra. Happy Holidays!

FUN FACTS

The word Christmas is Old English, a contraction of Christ's Mass.

The first president to decorate the White House Christmas tree in the United States was Franklin Pierce.

Germany made the first artificial Christmas trees. They were made of goose feathers and dyed green.

The candles used for lighting Hanukah Menorah are supposed to burn for at least half an hour after the stars come out.

Placing the menorah in a window, to share the miracle and the celebration with passers bys, is considered to be a very important tradition of the festival.

It takes 44 candles all together to observe all the eight nights of the Chanukah festival.

Some people claim that the dreidel game originated when Jewish children were not allowed to study Torah. If an official came along, they would quickly pull out these toys and appear to just be playing a game.

Kwanzaa is a fairly new holiday that was first celebrated in December 1966. The holiday of Kwanzaa was started by Dr. Maulana Karenga. The name comes from a Swahili phrase meaning first fruits.

Families who celebrate Kwanzaa decorate their homes with art and colorful African cloth objects. The women wear kaftans, and fresh fruits represent the idealism of African people. Children are included in the ceremonies, and the ancestors are given respect. The appropriate holiday greeting is Joyous Kwanzaa .

A Kwanzaa stamp was first issued by the U.S. Postal Service in October of 1997. It featured the artwork of Synthia Saint James. Then in 2004, a stamp was designed by Daniel Minter and issued. It had several colorfully robed figures which symbolized the seven principles of blackness.
