Musikalisches Opfer

Johann Sebastian Bach’s appearance on 7th May 1747 at the court of Frederick the Great is one of the best documented events in the composer’s career. Frederick provided Bach with an exceptionally difficult theme on which to improvise a fugue, after which, Bach announced that he intended to set the theme to paper. Several months later the Musical Offering appeared in print – a collection of 13 pieces in diverse genres: fugues, canons and a trio sonata, all exploiting the ‘Royal Theme’. Following the Offering on this disc is a collection of riddle canons by Bach: the ‘14 Canons on the Goldberg Ground’ that were discovered as late as 1974, in the form of a hand-written addendum to the composer’s own printed copy of the Goldberg Variations. The disc closes with the Sonata in G major for flute, violin and basso continuo, BWV 1038.

The flautist Sharon Bezaly has, over the past 20 years, released some 40 discs on BIS, recordings that have contributed to the international recognition that she enjoys. Both on disc and in concert she has done much to champion new repertoire, and has had no less than 20 concertos dedicated to her. On this new recording, however, she turns to core repertoire, although not necessarily that of her own instrument. The two sonatas by César Franck and Gabriel Fauré were both composed with the violin in mind, and even though Prokofiev’s sonata was originally intended for the flute it is often heard in the composer’s own version for violin and piano. In these works Sharon is joined by the legendary pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy.


Niccolò PAGANINI (1782-1840)

Sueye Park

Niccolò Paganini is possibly the only figure in the field of classical music whose name has become a household word, equivalent with an almost supernatural excellence in any kind of human endeavour; his 24 Caprices have entered popular culture in a way that few other classical pieces have. Throughout the collection, Paganini employs the full palette of violin techniques, combining them in ingenious ways: ricochet bowing over four strings, octave trills, endless chains of double-stops, left-hand pizzicato and artificial harmonics. Born in 2000, the young Korean violinist Sueye Park has studied in Berlin since 2009. Her first encounter with Paganini was at the age of 11, when she performed the composer’s First Violin Concerto at the Komische Oper in Berlin, and she now makes her début on disc with this challenging programme.

To date, Kalevi Aho has composed sixteen symphonies and twenty-eight concertos, several operas and a large number of chamber works – a rate of production which is all the more impressive considering the complexity and originality displayed by each new work. On this latest in a long series of BIS releases with Aho’s music, two of his most recent works are performed by the musicians of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. The orchestra and its artistic director John Storgårds have collaborated with the composer on several projects, and the Concerto for Soprano Saxophone is a commission from the orchestra, at the suggestion of the Swedish saxophonist Anders Paulsson, a specialist on the soprano saxophone.


Riemuitkaamme!A Finnish Christmas

Riemuitkaamme! is an imaginative and unconventional selection of choral music associated with Christmas as it is celebrated in Finland. Several of the pieces are by Finnish composers – Sibelius, Rautavaara and Madetoja, to name a few – while others have become part of the Christmas traditions of the country despite their international background. Among these: Berlioz’ The Shepherds’ Farewell and Tchaikovsky’s Christ, when a Child… are quite late additions compared to the medieval hymns Puer natus in Bethlehem, Ecce novum gaudium and Angelus emittitur. Contemporary music forms an important part of the activities of the Helsinki Chamber Choir and Nils Schweckendiek and, true to form, the team includes a world-premiere recording in their celebrations: Aattoilta, by the Canadian-born composer Matthew Whittall.

This is the second recording of the Strauss trilogy with Sweden’s national orchestra under the baton of Principal Guest Conductor Kent Nagano. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra lays claim to an impressive Strauss tradition: in its very first concert season in 1905/06, the orchestra performed Don Juan; Death and Transfiguration, conducted by Wilhelm Stenhammar, was added to the repertoire in 1912, and Ein Heldenleben formed part of the orchestra’s programmes in the 1970s. The gig recorded on October 28, 1967 at the De Doelen concert palace in Rotterdam, stands out in the recorded legacy of Thelonious Monk, so far as it breaks away from his usual quartet setup. Along with bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley the performance was peppered with prestigious guest appearances, including trumpet players Ray Copeland and Clark Terry, saxophone players Johnny Griffin and Phil Woods, and trombonist Jimmy Cleveland. After performing two numbers as a quartet, Monk gradually invites more players to the stage until Blue Monk, performed by nine musicians, starring the virtuoso bugle of inspired genius Clark Terry.

Emperor Joseph II was partial to musical contests. In 1786 he decided to regale his visitors with a contest involving what were then the two most popular forms of vocal music for the stage: Italian opera and the German Singspiel. For the Italian opera the choice fell on Antonio Salieri, the director of music at the Vienna Court Opera, while Mozart was chosen to write the German Singspiel. Salieri’s stature as an opera composer was abundantly demonstrated by Nikolaus Harnoncourt when he conducted Prima la musica at the Mozart Week Festival in Salzburg in 2002 – but at no point was Mozart’s own reputation impugned in consequence.

Mozart’s Requiem may have been written under strange circumstances in the final months of the composer’s life, but the work itself is timeless. Although left incomplete on his death in December 1791, having been anonymously commissioned, the Requiem was completed by a pupil: Franz Xaver Süssmayr. By the time it was premiered in 1793, it was already a famous work – albeit, shrouded in mystery – with a magisterial quality, from the ferocity of the Dies irae to the otherworldly grace of the Lacrimosa. Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus gave a powerful and poignant performance of the masterpiece, alongside an impressive group of soloists, in a concert recorded live in Munich in May 2017.

Georges Bizet‘s captivating music to Carmen, the Habanera and Seguidilla, like Escamillo‘s Toreador‘s Song, are known to one and all. The French composer‘s most successful opera was staged on the spectacular floating stage of Lake Constance, Bregenz in July 2017, with a set designed by British artist Es Devlin, in collaboration with the stage director Kasper Holten, Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House in London. For the Danish stage director, this ‘opera about destiny and obsession’ centres on ‘two people who are treated as outsiders, whose paths cross and who cling to each other in a passionate but unhealthy relationship’. ‘The lake-stage in Bregenz is a venue for theatrical spectaculars, and Kasper Holten’s production of Carmen on Es Devlin’s extraordinary set was a knockout’ (The Telegraph).
