March brings the beginning of spring, a season of growth and renewal. Green blades of grass push through the ground, and green buds of leaves sprout on the trees. Regular growth is part of nature’s cycle, and ours, too. No matter how old we may get, we never stop growing! This March, consider ways you can grow your mind, heart, health and happiness. In addition to March madness, Easter and St. Patrick’s Day, it’s time to celebrate Wellderly Week! Wellderly is a blend of the words “well and elderly.” The third week of March is set aside to celebrate and recognize senior citizens who are young at heart. If you take a look around you, it’s easy to see just what that means: Today’s seniors are something special. Medical advances and active lifestyles are helping seniors live longer than ever, and not just live, but thrive. Senior adults are becoming pros at Wii, going on frequent excursions, volunteering, exercising daily and updating their Facebook pages! These are people who show the rest of society that "80 is the new 70,” and so on. Remember as you celebrate Wellderly Week the words of poet Robert Browning: “Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.” It’s time to spring forward! Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 13. Set your clock one hour ahead before going to bed on Saturday, March 12. Best wishes to Elizabeth Conboy, Norvelle Copeland, Pat Hunt, Alan Conklin, Phyllis Miller, Alyce Williams, Pat Boyd, Joan Jones and Bob Bosworth, who are all celebrating birthdays this month. Forever grateful, Jan Boatright

All About EasterEaster, one of the most

important holidays inChristianity, celebrates the centralevent of the Christian faith: theresurrection of Jesus Christ afterhis crucifixion. This event issignificant to Christians because, through his death andresurrection, Jesus suffered for thesins of the world, yet was able toovercome death.

Easter is observed on the firstSunday after the full moon thatoccurs on or after the vernalequinox (the first day of spring).According to the Bible, the eventsof the crucifixion and resurrectionoccurred during the JewishPassover, a springtime celebration.

Easter is preceded by Lent, a40-day period of fasting andrepentance that begins on AshWednesday. The Sunday beforeEaster is Palm Sunday, the daythat Jesus arrived in Jerusalem. The week before Easter is calledHoly Week.

During Holy Week, Christiansobserve Maundy Thursday, whenthe Last Supper with Jesus and hisdisciples took place; and GoodFriday, the day of the crucifixion. The resurrection is then celebratedon Easter Sunday.

Children often participate inEaster egg hunts and look forwardto visits from the Easter Bunny, who is said to deliver candy andeggs during the night. Eggs andrabbits were once used as fertilitysymbols during ancientspringtime festivals, but nowrepresent new life when associatedwith the Easter holiday.

happy holiday!

New Hope forAlzheimer’s DetectionEver since Alzheimer’s disease

was described by a German doctorin 1906, there was only one wayto know for sure if someone hadit. A pathologist would examinethe brain after death, looking forplaque. If there was no plaque, that person did not have thedisease. Autopsies have shownthat 20 percent of people withdementia diagnosed withAlzheimer’s did not have thedisease. But now there’s a newscan that can be done on livingpatients to check for plaque ontheir brains. For the first time, doctors would have a reliable way

to diagnose the presence ofAlzheimer’s in patients withmemory problems.

Brain scans that show plaquecould help scientists with somefundamental questions: Who hasor is getting Alzheimer’s, does thedisease ever stop or slow down onits own, and is plaque reallycausing brain cell death? There isno treatment yet to stop or slowthe progress of Alzheimer’s, butmajor drug companies have newexperimental drugs they hope willwork. These scans provide a wayfor the companies to test thedrugs. If the scans can accuratelypredict whether people aredeveloping Alzheimer’s beforethey have symptoms, that’s whendoctors will have the best chanceof fighting this disease.

The Joy of PassoverPassover is an eight-day festival

celebrated in the early spring(March or April), from the 15ththrough the 22nd of the Hebrewmonth Nissan.

The holiday celebrates thefreedom of the Israelites fromslavery in ancient Egypt. The bookof Exodus tells how God sentMoses to deliver a message toPharaoh to free the Jewish slaves. When Pharaoh refused, God senta series of plagues to Egypt. Thefinal plague was the death of allthe firstborn. However, God“passed over” the houses of Jews, sparing those families’ firstborn.

Avoiding chametz, or leavenedgrain, is an important part ofPassover. This tradition cameabout because the Jews fleeingEgypt were in a hurry and didn’thave time to let their bread rise.Unleavened bread, or matzah, iseaten during the days of thefestival.

A Seder meal is held the firsttwo nights of Passover andfollows a series of rituals from abook called the Haggadah.Blessings are given, and specificfoods—including matzah, bitterherbs, and wine or grape juice—are eaten.

The story of the first Passover isread from the Haggadah, prompted by the youngest personasking a set of questions, beginning with “Why is this nightdifferent from all other nights?”
