Dear Friends,

On the first day of rehearsals for thisproduction, the cast sat around and talkedabout Madeleine L’Engle’s novel -- when theyencountered it for the first time, whichcharacter spoke to them, and what they tookaway from it. It was fascinating, because they allhad different responses, yet the book movedthem all in profound ways. Like many of you, perhaps, I read it as an 11 or 12 year old andimmediately saw myself in Meg. As an adult, I’mstill moved every time I read it, and its themes ofgood vs. evil, the power of love, and so muchmore, continues to resonate across generations.Ever since the Lewis Family Playhouse opened itsdoors, I’ve wanted to bring a theatrical adaptationof this book to our stage. We are so lucky to havefinally been able to share it with our audiences.

We have the good fortune to have abrilliant creative team, led by Director RobertCastro, whose heart and artistry blend togetherto create magic every day. And what magic! One of the wonderful things that sets live

theatre apart is the ability touse huge gestures and the imagination of theartists as well as the audience. John Glore’sadaptation uses a theatrical convention ofdirect address, which gave us license to makebold choices in the design – while nevercompromising on the humanity of thecharacters, and the emotional journey the threechildren take in addition to their actual journeythrough time and space. I invite you to take thatjourney with them today, and I’d love you toshare your experience with us. If you’re here ona school field trip, send us letters or have yourteacher post questions or comments on ourFacebook page. If you’re here on a weekend, Ihope you’ll talk to our talented cast membersand our staff in the lobby after the performance.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful story withus and I hope you’ll come back next season forthree more stories created especially for you!Murry Hepner,Producer, MainStreet Theatre Company

We are extremely proud that our beautiful Lewis FamilyPlayhouse at the Cultural Center and our very own residentprofessional theatre company, the MainStreet TheatreCompany offers our community high quality, professionalperformances that are specifically designed for children, school groups and family audiences. Watching a youngchild’s face as they experience the wonder of classic andcontemporary literature come to life on our stage isheartwarming to all of us. We are particularly pleased to saythat to date, over 180,000 children and families haveattended one of our TYA productions!

The Rancho Cucamonga Community & Arts Foundationis a non-profit community organization that has been inexistence since 1987. The City of Rancho Cucamonga isextremely proud to have the support of the Community &Arts Foundation through their significant fundraising and giving efforts for the Cultural Center. Thispast year the Foundation announced their sponsorship of Foundation Family Saturdays as a part ofthe MainStreet Theatre Company series. This sponsorship provides reduced ticket prices for the firstSaturday performances of each TYA production. Thomas Galindo, Chair of the Rancho CucamongaCommunity & Arts Foundation shared with the City Council that “having the opportunity to increaseopportunities for children and families to experience the magic and wonder of live theatre and tohelp nurture a life-long love of the performing arts is what the Foundation is all about.”

The City Council hopes that you enjoy the performance of A Wrinkle In Time. Did you know that thisplay is an adaptation of a novel by Madeleine L’Engle that was written 50 years ago and that you canfind it right here at the Library at the Cultural Center? If you enjoy the play, you might want to askyour parents to take you to the Library and check out other books about space, time travel and otherfun stuff. Now we invite you to sit back and enjoy this play about the battle between good and evil, the love between family and the courage to take action and make a difference.

FOUNDATION FAMILY SATURDAYSThe Rancho Cucamonga Community & ArtsFoundation offered Foundation Family

Saturdays, specially priced $9.50 tickets for opening day performancesfor all three MainStreet Theatre Company productions during the 2011/2012season. Foundation Family Saturdays are designed to offer live professionaltheatre at a reduced price enabling more families the opportunity toexperience and enjoy the arts.

TARGET has been a supporter of the MainStreet TheatreCompany since its inception in 2006! The commitment to qualityfamily experiences represents the partnership between Target, the Rancho Cucamonga Community and Arts Foundation andthe City of Rancho Cucamonga. We are grateful for their

continued support of school field trips, which brings thousands of children tothe Lewis Family Playhouse to experience MainStreet Theatre Companyproductions throughout the year.

The ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM at the Lewis Family Playhouse is alsosupported by the Rancho Cucamonga Community and Arts Foundation andby an Outreach grant from our local Target. This program allows us to sendartists into the schools for more “hands-on” workshops in conjunction withour MainStreet Theatre Company productions. For Sleeping Beauty, Operasinger Ann Noriel led song-writing workshops in local schools. For A WrinkleIn Time, graduate student Julia Wentland led workshops where studentscreated their own versions of “Aunt Beast.” These workshops, along with studyguides that we provide for all of our productions, help to enhance the regularschool curriculum with experiences of the arts.

As we end our 6th season, we are so grateful to our audiences andour wonderful artists, who take the journey with us! We’re thrilled thatour 2011/2012 season attracted some financial supporters as well, mostnotably The Rancho Cucamonga Sunrize Rotary Club, who helpedsupport Honus and Me this fall, and the National Endowment for theArts, who are helping to support this production of A Wrinkle in Time.

As you all know, the MainStreet Theatre Company is owned andoperated by the City of Rancho Cucamonga. This is a model not seen inthe rest of the country, and we are incredibly lucky to belong to a Citythat understands the value of introducing young people to quality artsprogramming. Unlike most other arts organizations, we didn’t go intothe community to ask for help as we were starting out – and we’ve beenfortunate to have been able to build a body of work that we’re veryproud of. It’s not a secret that the economy has affected cities acrossthe country, and we recognize that in order to sustain the quality of ourprogramming, it’s time to look outside of our own city organization tohelp support our productions.

We’re very appreciative of the businesses that contribute bysubsidizing tickets, and to a small number of Foundations andCorporations who have contributed sponsorship money, including thetwo we mentioned earlier, but we know that our best hope ofbecoming more self-sustaining is to talk to the people who are alreadyenthusiastic about our programming. We hope that you’ll want tobecome more involved and help us to continue to introduce qualitytheatre to the kids and families of Rancho Cucamonga and thesurrounding areas.

We’ll be doing a series of fund-raising events, starting with theopening night party for this show to kick us off. We’re also starting the“MainStreet Club”, which will be a way for kids and their parents or

grandparents to become more involved with us as a family. We’re planning fun events prior to theopening of each play, as well as some special “club only” secrets that we’ll tell you about when you join!Club Memberships start at only $20 per year for one adult and one child. You can find out more and signup in the lobby after all the performances of A Wrinkle in Time.

There are other ways to connect with MainStreet! With your e-mail address, we can keep youinformed about other upcoming events, including an outdoor Family Festival that we’re planning in thefall. “Like” us on Facebook to be the first to learn about the casting, design and rehearsal process at www.facebook.com/MainStreetTheatreCompany.

Or – Adults can become Members of the Lewis Family Playhouse, and it’s possible to check off abox where part of your membership goes directly to the MainStreet Theatre Company. Go to ourwebsite for more info and a list of perks!

Even if you don’t take advantage of our Club or other special events, you’re helping to support usevery time you buy a ticket! The more tickets we sell, the less fundraising we need to do to make up thedifference, so tell your friends and help us introduce more people to the magic of live theatre!

MADELEINE L’ENGLE (Author) was bornon November 29th, 1918, and spent herformative years in New York City. Instead of herschoolwork, she found that she would muchrather be writing stories, poems and journals forherself, which was reflected in her grades (notthe best). At age 12, she moved to the FrenchAlps with her parents where she went to anEnglish boarding school. After boarding school, she attended Smith College where she studiedEnglish with wonderful teachers and, as she readthe classics, continued her own creative writing. She graduated with honors and returned to New York where she worked in the theatre, andwith the benefits of Equity union pay and aflexible schedule she was afforded time to write.

She published her first two novels

during those years – A Small Rain and Ilsa –before meeting Hugh Franklin, her futurehusband, when she was an understudy in AntonChekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. After startingtheir family, they moved to Connecticut to raisetheir children in a small dairy farm village withmore cows than people. They revived an oldgeneral store, which they ran for nine years, andthen made the move back to the city with theirthree children. Hugh revitalized his professionalacting career and Madeleine began anassociation with the Cathedral Church of St.John the Divine, where she was the librarian andmaintained an office for more than thirty years. After Hugh’s death in 1986, it was her writing, lecturing, family and friends that kept her goinguntil she passed away in September of 2007.2012 marks the 50th anniversary of her mostmemorable children’s book, A Wrinkle in Time.Other books in the Time series include A Wind inthe Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet and Many Waters.
