incluSive education

For twenty years CSU has had a successfully functioning system of inclusive education. It is the basic institution in the Ural Federal District, providing special conditions for training invalids and people with disabilities: annually more than a hundred students with disabilities get a degree here, and that is 80% of the number of students with disabilities in the Chelyabinsk region who require special conditions for education. Staff of CSU structural unit, called the Regional Training and Research Centre for Inclusive Education, developed an adaptive system of preliminary training, which involves the use of specialized equipment, adaptive information and communication technologies. Barrier-free environment established in CSU allows students to move freely within the educational buildings and around the adjacent territory.

“Together” is a project of active social assistance implemented

at CSU. This social network unites everyone who needs help and wants to help. Over the year the organizers have risen through the ranks from the idea to a stable project, and have presented the project at IT-school and Eurasia Forum in Yekaterinburg, received grants from charitable foundations of Oleg Mitiaev and Vladimir Potanin. Project manager was a CSU graduate Nikolai Olkhovskiy, the participants are students and graduates of CSU and other universities who are not indifferent to the problems of people with reduced mobility, whether it be people in wheelchairs, young mothers, pensioners or other people.

University experience is appreciated at the educational and administrative levels. Diana Tsiring, the CSU Rector, has become a member of the Council for the Disabled under the Governor of the Chelyabinsk region, and CSU is a host and organizer of key events in this field.

Thus, in 2014 CSU held an international scientific-practical conference on inclusive education, with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Education of Russia and Federal Education and Science Supervision Service. In 2015 CSU held the regional stage of Abilympiks, the world's largest skills competition for people with disabilities. Within the framework of the competition participants and guests could attend different interactive

platforms: at IT-future platform senior high-school students and students of vocational secondary institutions were told about CSU facilities, and at the Career Podium people with disabilities were told about their job opportunities. At the round table the speakers discussed the interaction between social partners in the labor market aimed at ensuring access to vocational training and employment for disabled people of the Chelyabinsk region.

14

the inteRnational cooPeRation

CSU devotes a lot of effort to keep up with the latest innovative trends in education. This would not be possible without intense international cooperation, both with European and Eastern countries. CSU encourages periods of study and practice sessions abroad. On the other hand, a great number of international students are coming to CSU to pursue their education. To secure the international academic mobility, CSU has created a network of more than 40 partnering universities in Europe, Middle East and China, which includes Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences (Austria), Kiel University of Applied Sciences (Germany), Lille University of Science and Technology (France), University of Montpellier 1

(France), Catholic University of Eichstatt – Ingolstadt (Germany), JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Finland), University of Limerick (Ireland), International Telematic University UNINETTUNO (Italy), Antonio de Nebrija University (Spain), Autonomous University Chapingo (Mexico), Shenyang University (China), Liaocheng University (China), and others.

Nowadays, CSU has obtained academic mobility through various exchange programs for students, postgraduates and professors. CSU is an active participant of EU programs, TEMPUS in particular. It has been a member of several projects (“The strategy of management in High school in order to facilitate the accessibility of education”,

1995-1998; “Regional strategy of education for disabled students and the students living in distant regions”, 1999-2001; “Providing accessibility and integration into the system of education for students with limited physical abilities”, 2001-2003; “Development of Qualifications Framework for the System of Higher Education in the Urals Region”, 2008-2011; “HUMAN Security (environment, quality of food, public health and society) on territories contaminated by radioactive agents”, 2012-2015) aimed at bringing closer the educational systems of Russia and the EU. Working in TEMPUS, CSU has unique possibilities to establish contacts with the leading European universities and implement scientific and academic projects.

15

univeRSity Science

Today CSU is engaged in more than thirty scientific fields, many of them are integrated in the scientific schools. All university research and innovation activities are supported by collaboration with leading research centers, foundations and organizations in Russia and abroad. More and more researchers receive grants of the President of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Chelyabinsk region, RFBR and RHF research funds. In 2005 Vasiliy Buchelnikov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, in collaboration with the V.A. Kotelnikov Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics (IRE RAS, Moscow) established the Physics of Magnetic Phenomena Laboratory, where both

theoretical and experimental research is carried out. Prof. Buchelnikov is also a founder of the scientific school on the study of magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of magnetically ordered alloys with shape memory and the use of such alloys in magnetic refrigeration technology. The school has repeatedly received grants of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Russian Science Foundation grants, the President of Russia grants for young Doctors of Sciences, Soros Foundation grants, the Governor of the Chelyabinsk region grants, the Universities of Russia Program grants, CRDF grants (US Civilian Research and Development Fund). Buchelnikov’s school participated in the implementation of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research grants (RFBR), RFBR-

Ural, RFBR-Japan, RFBR-India, and RFBR-China.

In 2014 a scientific school of computer topology under the guidance of Sergey Matveev, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, received a Megagrant of the Russian Government. Such support was provided to the South Ural university for the first

16

univeRSity Science

time. CSU launched a world-class mathematical laboratory for topology in quantum research. “This area of fundamental science is closely related to Quantum Mechanics and to gradually developing theory of quantum computers. So far these computers exist only as models, but if they were assembled, it would transform the entire world,” said Sergey Matveev, the Head of the Department of Computer

Topology and Algebra, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

A scientific group of Institute of Economics of Industry, Business and Administration received a prestigious Russian Research Institute Foundation grant for the research on success factors of small and medium Russian enterprises. Students are actively involved in the research as part of their educational process.

For many years Chelyabinsk State University has been cooperating with a number of defense industry enterprises by conducting joint research and development activities, organizing internships and providing professional training. CSU continues collaboration with the Russian Federal Nuclear Center of All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Technical Physics named after Academician

E.I. Zababakhin, Mayak Production Association, Pribor Plant, and Ural Automobile Plant.

Ties with the Design Bureau named after Academician V.P. Makeyev State Rocket Center are being strengthened. In 1996 CSU branch in Miass was established with bureau support, and today more then a thousand people are being educated there. State Rocket Center develops rocket and space technologies for satellite output in outer space and for missile submarine fleet. Thus, CSU students with knowledge of Continuum Mechanics, Aerodynamics and Hydrodynamics, Gas Dynamics, Combustion Theory, Heat Transfer, Mathematical Modeling of Complex Physical Processes are always demanded in the labor market.   The Department of Applied Mechanics successfully

functions on the basis of the enterprise.

Students are largely involved in scientific work both as participants of their academic advisors’ research and as initiators of scientific projects.

Thus, the CSU Faculty of Chemistry is working to create a unique component of the eco-friendly pure fuel cell. Scientific activity is carried out in the framework of hydrogen energetics, the scientific direction popular all over the world. The Faculty is developing a unique proton-permeable membrane for the fuel cell. The advantages of the technology are environmental friendliness and high efficiency due to the direct conversion of chemical energy into electrical energy. Compactness, portability and relative simplicity of the design of the fuel cell, as well as Sun energy usage

17

for reactants production (oxygen and hydrogen) allow attributing makes the technology very promising for future.

CSU ecologists together with the European Union are seeking ways to rehabilitate contaminated areas. The Faculty runs Master program on radiation safety and conducts relevant research within the framework of the European Union TEMPUS Program. Establishment of Environmental Reception Office at the CSU Faculty of Ecology was a major innovation for the whole region. The current training program for environmental inspectors allows students to participate in environmental raids: they take samples of water and air in the factories and in water protection zones, monitor the illegal deforestation. The Faculty has developed and successfully

implements the method of estimating the degree of air pollution on the snow cover, which allows measuring the dynamics of emissions produced by industrial enterprises, as well as the impact of factories and road transport on the current level of pollution.

Currently scientists of the Radio Physics and Electronics Physics Department are developing new metamaterials and composite structures. Metamaterials are new functional materials. They may be applied in the refining industry as components of the thermal catalysts, in radioelectronics in order to create anechoic chambers, in medicine to equip tomographic rooms. Also thermal removal of tumors and treatment of localized bacterial infections may be realized with the help of nanoparticles.

The Inter-university Medical and Physical Center has been working and developing for nearly 20 years, consolidating almost all Chelyabinsk laser medicine centers. It is functioning within several organizations, among which are CSU Laboratory of Medical Physics, SUSMU Laboratory and City Hospital № 1. Children's Hospital, Chelyabinsk Regional Hospital, City Hospital № 5 and a number of private centers has recently joined the project. CSU Faculty of Physics provides technical, maintenance and design support. University experts provide advice upon delivery of equipment. Besides, CSU has established the Medical Technologies Small Innovative Enterprise.

The key innovative products of the enterprise are laser medical technologies, about 20 of which have been

patented and implemented. For example, photodynamic cancer therapy with new photosensitizer is the first anti-cancer treatment in Russia. Students and graduates of CSU Faculty of Physics are not only involved in the assembling and testing of laser equipment, but they also control the laser during operations by calculating modes and setting

18

univeRSity Science

characteristics. Now two fiber lasers are undergoing clinical testing in the center. On this basis, the thulium fiber laser with approximately two microns wavelength has been designed. The Medical Physics Center was the first to create lasers of this kind.

The region's first project-based learning laboratory (ILab), equipped according to the latest European standards, is successfully functioning at the Institute of Information Technologies. Students conduct scientific research in the field of robotics and create different apps for smartphones. Shandy: Pocket Schedule Android app is very popular among the students of CSU and other universities. Cat-robot, which reacts to human’s movements, was one of the firs projects of the Lab.

CSU humanitarian faculties

pay a lot of attention to the field of international relations. This program is trained at two university structural units. The Faculty of History and Philology offers a large number of courses on the foreign history and culture, as well as contemporary world politics, practice of business negotiations and business communication, with the increased focus on CIS and the countries of Western Europe and North America. For 17 years the Faculty of Eurasia and East has been fostering highly qualified experts in foreign affairs who facilitate international relations between Russia (Eurasia) and such eastern countries as China, Japan, Korea, Turkey and the Arab region, which are important strategic partners of our country.

Linguists are also proud of their relations with foreign countries: the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation signed cooperation agreements with French, German and Chinese universities, offering free exchange programs for students. Except numerous languages, the Faculty offers a wide range of translation courses (technical translation, literary translation, escort interpretation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, basics of business communication), as well as intercultural communication training programs including tourism and PR.

Archeology is actively developing. Thus, CSU students managed to discover ancient nomad burial during archaeological expedition

19

univeRSity Science

in the southern part of the Chelyabinsk region. Burials belong to late Sarmatians who roamed the steppes of the South Urals in 2-3 centuries BC.

Moreover, archaeologists of Chelyabinsk State University carried out field investigations in Agapovsky, Kizilsky and Bredinsky districts of the Chelyabinsk region. The results of the expedition made a great contribution to strengthen scientific status of Arkaim museum and expand the scope of its touristic and educational activity.

In August, 2015 Chelyabinsk State University hosted the 51st session of the Council of Botanical Gardens of the Urals and the Volga region. Having been held for the first time in the South Urals the session became a milestone for the CSU Botanical Garden

and the whole Chelyabinsk. Representatives of botanical gardens and arboretums of the region discussed the aspects of genetic diversity conservation, plant introduction, land law, land use and interaction with municipal authorities, and dealt with the issue of social activity of botanical gardens.

CSU is proud of its library collection numbering about 800 thousand documents in 13 world languages. Some items of the rare book section date back to XVII century. Besides CSU library is recognized as one of the best university libraries in the usage of digital library systems by the students.

Chelyabinsk State University was the ground for the first archeological school in Chelyabinsk. The first field season was opened in 1977 under the leadership of Gennady B. Zdanovich, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor. In close cooperation with the Faculty of History students were encouraged to undergo archeological internships, attend lectures and special courses, and join the research process. Hundreds of pupils and students took part in archaeological expeditions; their achievements were marked by awards and prizes at regional and national student conferences.

In 1987 one of CSU expedition troops discovered Arkaim, a fortified settlement of the Bronze Age dated III-II thousand years BC. The need to conduct complex research in Arkaim brought

together experts in geology, soil science, biology and other related domains.

In 1997 Academic Center of Human Beings and Nature was founded on the basis of Archaeological Laboratory. Currently, the Center comprises of Training and Production Department of Archeology, Ethnography and Socionatural History, Laboratory of Biocenosis and Environmental Monitoring, the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography which showcases a unique exhibition presenting results of CSU expedition and discovering the history of the Southern Trans-Urals from the Stone Age to the ethnographic present.

In 2013-14 CSU Academic Center of Human Beings and Nature conducted archaeological excavations in the village of Stepnoe, where the burial mounds of the

Bronze Age are situated. Also CSU archaeologists carried out excavations on the banks of the river Miass, where artifacts of X-XIII centuries BC had been found.

Nowadays Arkaim is known as an outstanding cultural landmark Arkaim-Sintashta and as the earliest urban area of the South Urals (“Country of Towns”). The investigation of Arkaim settlement and burials has contributed to the development of copper metallurgy, steppes development, history of architecture, military affairs and wheel-making. Arkaim findings have become valuable data sources which extended our understanding of Common-Indo-European spiritual culture.

The discovery of Arkaim and Sintashta has resulted in the establishment of a special research area in Archeology and ancient history of

Eurasia, and stimulated the development of major international projects.

Nowadays Arkaim is of interest for experts in Archeology, History, Linguistics and Ethnology, Paleography and Paleobiology, Geoarchaeology, Culturology, Religion and Philosophy.

“chelyabinSk” meteoRite

Chelyabinsk State University played the essential role in the study of “Chelyabinsk” meteorite. The celestial body fell in February, 2013 and CSU physicists conducted studies on determining its weight and examined meteorite dust. They assisted the Chelyabinsk region Ministry of Environmental and Radiation Safety in their search for the largest piece of the meteorite in the lake Chebarkul. The scientists have carried out laboratory examinations of the composition of the bodies recovered from the bottom of the lake and determined their origin.

Alexander Dudorov, the Head of the Theoretical Physics Department, Professor, and Sergei Zamozdra, Assistant Professor, collected about 3 kg of invaluable material. The exact composition of the

celestial body and its type have also been determined; X-ray and chemical analysis had been performed.

Representatives of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the Japanese Space Security Association Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI Institute), and Commission of the International Astronomical Union visited Chelyabinsk State University to study

the fragments which were in the possession of CSU laboratories. As a result, “Science”, one of the most prestigious scientific journals, published an article devoted to various aspects of the “Chelyabinsk” meteorite examination and co-authored by Alexander Dudorov, Sergey Haybrahmanov and Alexander Maier, the researches of Chelyabinsk State University.

NASA Space Flight Center awarded the Robert Goddard Highest Prize for contributions to the Astronomy science to Nikolay Gorkavyi, professors of Theoretical Physics Department, and Alexander Dudorov. Also by the decision of the International Astronomical Union one of the asteroids was named “Dudorov” in honor of Alexander E. Dudorov.
