Dear colleagues,

Welcome to the 1st DiscourseNet congress in Bremen! We are delighted to host you for this event which is the first of a series of international and interdisciplinary conferences in Discourse Studies.DiscourseNet is a network in which discourse researchers have come together with different disciplinary backgrounds and interests. Initiated by Johannes Angermuller with Martin Nonhoff and many others in 2007, DiscourseNet regularly organises meetings, workshops and conferences. Until 2014, DiscourseNet activities centred around two major publication projects: a 1300-page Handbook and a Dictionary of Interdisciplinary Discourse Studies with 550 entries, covering the broad ranges of currents, problems and concepts in the interdisciplinary field of Discourse Studies (in German). You will have a chance to browse through these publications during the book presentation on 24 September at 6pm. Through Daniel Wrana’s programming efforts, DiscourseNet has helped launch http://www.discourseanalysis.net – a multilingual platform which has attracted over 4000 users from all over the world. From the beginning, DiscourseNet has included members from many different European countries. And in the last few years our activities such as our yearly international PhD summer schools have reached beyond the German-speaking world. We will discuss fu-ture DiscourseNet projects just after this conference on 26 September, 3pm-6pm. Please join us and take part in the DiscourseNet future! The DiscourseNet #1 Congress is evidence of these develop-ments, which have gone beyond individual efforts and testify to a new field emerging at the intersection of language and society. With DiscourseNet #1 Congress, we want to bring together the different tendencies in this field and to invite them to a productive dialogue. We wish you three stimulating days, many pleasant encounters and we hope that some of you will join us for future DiscourseNet projects. Our special thanks goes to a fantastic team that made this conference possible: David Adler, Peter Arnhold, Johannes Beetz, Inken Behrmann, Sixian Hah, Julian Hamann, Jan Krasni, Kyoung-Mi Kim, Robin Koss, Nataša Matović, Jens Maeße, Yannik Porsché, Ronny Scholz, Andreas Schindel, Jaspal Singh, Kelly Weleschuk, Daniel Wrana.

On its way, it stops, among others, at the main train station and at the city centre (tram stop “Domsheide”). From the University to the train station, it approximately takes 15 minutes, to the city centre 20 minutes, to the airport 30 minutes. In you conference material, you will find one single ticket that you can use for transfer on Friday evening (for city tour and/or conference dinner). You can buy additional tickets on the tram. Or you can buy booklets of four or of ten tickets for a somewhat cheaper price at the BSAG kiosk at the big tram stop just in front of the main train station. Coming from the city centre to the University campus, you best get off at “Universität/Zentralbereich”.

For either occasion, you should travel to the city centre individually with tram line no. 6 (direction Flughafen/Airport) from the tram stop “Universität Zentralbereich” and best get off at tram stop “Domsheide”; it’s a ride of approximately 20 minutes. If you want to take part in the guided city tour (see below), you should catch the tram at around 18:00 (trams leave at 17:51, 17:57, 18:03). If you leave later, you will probably miss the tour. From “Domsheide” station to the starting point of the tour, follow the directions on the map you receive once you register for the tour.If you don’t participate in the city tour, you should catch the tram around 19:00 for the conference dinner. Please talk to the Congress staff if you’re unsure whether or not you have registered. This lunch is not included in the Congress fee (each guest will have to pay 10-15 Euros, depending on drinks).
