Dear Brothers and Sisters,

“For those who love God all things work together for good,

for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Section 1. Lourdes Parish and People The true value of our parish is in our people, those who pray – near and far – and those who work for the good of the Lourdes parish family. Through persevering efforts, the Our Lady of Lourdes parish staff have enabled us to maximize our effectiveness and evangelization while we have been making significant capital improvements and repairs. Section 2. Parking Lot Capital Improvement, November 2020 This is evident in the recent invest-ment in all of the parking lots around our church and school. The investment includes new fence structures, milling and removing the old surface, installing new asphalt and re-striping the parking spaces. The total area of all the parking lots is nearly 2 acres. This November 2020 project is the largest and most visible infrastructure project since the upgrades to the grotto

and church in 2004. In both 2004 and 2020, The Shauger Group has been our contractor. Don Shauger, himself a son of Lourdes parish, has personally overseen much of the work.

The total parking lot investment also includes new fencing and guardrail by A-Able Fence Builders who implement-ed new safety features with the new fenc-ing and guardrail.

Section 3. Importance of Lourdes Parish

Staff.

A project such as the parking lot requires prudent discretion in the use of our savings, money which you generously contributed to Lourdes.

We can only complete this project

because our parish staff has consistently worked to maximize our efficiency, partic-ularly during this year of the pandemic and extended closure for worship. They make possible effectiveness in record keeping, liturgy and music, religious education, operations, administration, and keeping the Mass calendar and schedule of events.

We could not do this without them.

A special salute of gratitude to: Barbara Camp (Religious Education / Family Catechesis), Linda Chapman (Music Minister, Cantor), Manny Figueiredo (Organist), Carol Ford (Parish Bulletin), Annemarie Grasso (Administrative Assistant), Paul Hirsch (Sacristan), Jeri Konvalinka (Financial &

Human Resources Bookkeeper), Monica Nieves (Religious Education, Grades 7-12), Chris Victor (Maintenance).

St. Vincent DePaul Society

St. Vincent DePaul Society is hosting the soup kitchen on Saturday, 11/28/20 for Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. As of now the soup kitchen is operating on a to-go-lunch basis. Lunches are prepared ahead of time and will be dropped off at Holy Trinity on the morning of 11/28/20 so you will not have to serve at the soup kitchen itself. If any-one is interested in preparing or purchasing needed items please call Rosanne Bruno at 973-243-0679, or e-mail at [email protected].

CHRIST THE KING

First Reading: Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17 Thus says the Lord God: I myself will look after and tend my sheep. As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will give them rest, says the Lord God. The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy, shepherding them rightly. As for you, my sheep says the Lord God, I will judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 23:1-2, 2-3, 5-6 (1) Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28 Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through man, the resurrec-tion of the dead came also through man. For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the first fruits; then, as his coming, those who be-long to Christ; then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. When everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all. Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.’

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Report on the Parking Lot Paving Construction Project

This is to update you on the 2020 capital investment in the parking lots around our church and school. This major project includes new fence structures, milling and removing the old surface, installing new asphalt and re-striping the parking spaces. The total area of all the parking lots is nearly 2 acres.

Thank you for your support with your prayers and financial support of our parish. While the milling and paving took place within a week’s time (November 5th to 12th), the project overall was more than a year in the making, to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. Review of Competitive Bids (March 2019 – November 2019). Three contractors were inter-viewed by the Property Management Division of the Archdiocese of Newark. These bids were also reviewed by our Finance Council. The bids were submitted “sealed” without the contractors know-ing anything about the other bids. The Shauger Group was selected for this project. Don Shauger himself has personally ensured that we are getting the best possible price on this big project. This has been verified by the competitive bid submitted by The Shauger Group and our knowledge of their capability as a company. Improvement of Parking Lot Fence / Guardrail (October 2020). The fence at the Valley Way and Elm Street corner was upgraded to a chain link fence. The guardrail that separates the upper and lower parking lot was upgraded to a taller “double guardrail”. Alternate Parking Arrangements and School Bus Transportation (November 2020). On a daily basis, about 30 cars are parked in our property by the faculty and staff of Mount Carmel Guild Academy (MCGA) in our school. Fortunately, we were able to park all the cars in the “lower” parking lot while the “upper” lot was paved. MCGA also moved the school bus arrival/departure point to the Valley Way entrance temporarily during paving. We are very grateful to the West Orange Police Department for allowing us to park – as needed – in the Quigley Municipal Lot on Mississippi Avenue. Thank you, W.O.P.D. !

Movement of Garbage Disposal Dumpsters. (November 4). On the final day before paving was to start, we scheduled a visit with Interstate Waste Services (IWS) – our waste management contractor – to transport the large green dumpsters off of the asphalt and onto some grass areas. This was necessary so that we could pave every square foot of the lot. The gentleman who arrived turned out to be an IWS driver who has been serving our parish for over 30 years on his route and was extremely helpful with this important final preparatory step.

Milling and Preparation (November 5). This is the process of removing the original surface so that the asphalt can be renewed and replaced. On the first day, some obstacles were encountered which could have really slowed down the process. We are very grateful to Don Shauger and The Shauger Group who – with their creative problem solving and perseverance – kept us on schedule.

Paving and “Striping” of the Upper Lot (November 6-7). The parking lot was repaved (Nov.

6) and re-striped with new parking spaces (Nov. 7). It took 3 full days to mill (remove old surface), pave with new asphalt, and paint the parking spaces.

On November 9th, 10th, 11th, the same steps were taken in the lower parking lot around the

church. Due to construction, public Mass was not celebrated Nov. 9-11 and we re-opened for Morning Mass November 12. We were blessed with warm and dry weather during November 5th through 11th, during the milling and paving. Thank you, Lord!

The new parking lot also now has a speed bump on the sloped driveway between the upper

and lower parking lot. Please be careful. This project is a significant expenditure, $275,000 from our savings, but thanks to your

donations over time we could complete it. It is also an investment to ensure the safety of the school-children, teachers and staff using the parking lot every day, and will certainly help us maintain our lease with Mount Carmel Guild Academy. It is also necessary for your benefit and safety coming to church and events at Lourdes.

We understand many of you are experiencing difficult financial situations, but if you are

interested in making a donation specifically for the cost of the parking lot, we would be most grate-ful. By doing so, you will be helping to defray the cost and ensure that we can preserve our savings for other necessary endeavors to maintain our parish. Please mark your envelope or check-memo “Parish Parking Lot”.
