Dear BASS Families,

SO, WHAT IS QUALITY CHILD CARE ANYWAY?

The Before and After School Services (BASS) mission “is to provide support to families by car-ing for their children during out of school time in a safe, nurturing, fun and educational environ-ment.” Thank you for choosing BASS for your child/ren. As we begin this 22nd year of service, we would like to share the keenness of the TEAM working with your child/ren. Our staff are caring individuals with a variety of talents and skills. We continually challenge our team to engage with children and support learning through facilitated activities and child appropriate play time. Together we have a combined experience of over 550 years of childcare experience.

We focus on the safety of children and the environment, interactions, guidance and positive relationships with children, age appropriate en-gaging activities and curriculum and continued professional develop-ment and leadership of staff. The district utilizes “Safe Schools”, an online training tool for all LSR7 staff. BASS is assigned 13 courses in Safe Schools. In addition to the district’s required annual training, BASS also requires professional development through “CypherWorx” – Out of School Time Professional Development Center Online Training.

The Core Competencies for Early Childhood and Youth Development Professionals is the frame-

work that defines the standards for early childhood and youth development professionals. The

Core Competencies are organized into 8 Content Areas which help guide staff to include children

with various ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds – as well as diverse needs and abil-

ities. The 8 Content Areas are: Child and Youth Growth and Development, Learning and Environ-

ment and Curriculum, Observation and Assessment, Families and Communities, Health and Safety,

interactions with Children and Youth, Program Planning and Development, and Professional Devel-

opment and Leadership.

Families can be excited about the out of school time and what their child/ren will be doing and learning during BASS. Lesson planning for each program are a direct result of the second Content Area, Learning and Environment and Curriculum.

In closing, it is important to me that you know I have an open door for you. If you have questions, comments or concerns, I would like to hear from you. You may contact me at 986-3440.

Thank you for entrusting BASS with your precious child/ren.

Sincerely,

Dawn Butler

Kids Say the Darndest Things

“I wish it was raining dogs so I would not have to pay for

one.”

“Ms. Nicole, these taste like bones. Like, real, live bones.

Do I have to eat them?”

“I don’t trust grass...and I talk to squirrels.”

“Ew! That smells like breakfast, I hate the smell of breakfast.”

New Student: “What are those things behind Miss

Alyssa’s ears?” (referring to her hearing aids) Student #2:

“Oh don’t worry about those. Miss Alyssa is a Transformer! Everyone here knows Miss Alyssa is a

Transformer.”

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970’s.

Today, about one in five school-aged children (ages 6-19) has obesity. Obesity is defined as having excess

body weight. BMI, or Body Mass Index, is commonly used to measure whether a person is overweight or

obese. Children with a BMI at or above the 85th percentile and less than the 95th percentile are considered

overweight. Children at or above the 95th percentile have obesity.

For more information about how BMI is measured in children: About Child & Teen BMI

For more information about BMI measurement in school settings: Body Mass Index (BMI) Measurement in

Schools

Childhood obesity has immediate and long-term impacts on physical, social, and emotional health. For

example:

Children with obesity are at higher risk for having other chronic health conditions and diseases that impact

physical health, such as asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, type 2 diabetes and risk fac-

tors for heart disease.

Children who are obese are bullied and teased more than their normal weight peers, and are more likely to

suffer from social isolation, depression and lower self-esteem.

Long term, childhood obesity also is associated with having obesity as an adult which is linked to serious

conditions and diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and several types

of cancer.

If a person consumes more energy than they expend, that person will gain excess weight. For a child to main-

tain a healthy weight while still eating enough for healthy functioning, growth and physical activity, they need to

consume nutritious foods, get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, decrease screen time, watch less

television and eat fewer foods and beverages high in added sugars or solid fats. Visit these web sites for more

ideas about fighting childhood obesity.

Lee’s Summit R-7 schools continue to emphasize safe learning environments through anti-bullying efforts

The Lee’s Summit R-7 School District is continuing its emphasis on a safe learning environment for all students through ongoing anti-bullying efforts. The school district prohibits all forms of bullying as well as reprisal or retaliation against any person who reports an act of bullying among or against students. Through Missouri House Bill 1583, approved during spring 2017, all school districts are re-quired to make changes to their bullying policies. The district’s Policy JFCF (bullying and cyber-bullying) and JFCG (hazing) are the specific policies that address these situations. All Board pol-icies are available at this link.

Lee’s Summit R-7 staff members provide education and information about bullying prevention and reporting to students annually. This also includes information about the numerous ways available for students and others to report bullying. In addition to contacting the school princi-pal or other staff members, reporting may take place anonymously by selecting the Safe Schools Alert icon on each school’s website. Confidential reporting may occur via text, e-mail, phone or website and can include reporting of tips as well as praise for staff members. Each Lee’s Summit R-7 staff member is participating in online training focusing on prevention of bullying as well as how to appropriate address suspected or reported bullying.

For more information about bullying, cyberbullying, student lessons related to bullying and reporting of bullying, visit the Lee’s Summit R-7 bullying awareness website.

After login click on the My Account tab

In ‘My Account’ page click on the Change Account Information button

For each adult, who will pick up, add the PIN number. We recommend you set a PIN # with at least 6 digits as each person in the sys-

tem must have a unique PIN #. Cell phone numbers work well for this and are easy to remember.

Click on the Submit Changes button on the top right hand corner of the page.

Survey Quotes from the 2017 Summer Parent Survey

“”I really liked the consolidated site. It was nice to have both my kids at the same location. Valet drop off and pick up was very helpful.”

“The teachers and assistants were all very kind and attentive.”

“It was a longer drive but I completely understand the purpose of consolidating. I felt like it ran very smoothly and my son loved it. The amount of staff available

to help with drop off and pick up was wonderful. Great Job”

“It was evident that a lot of thought and planning went into scheduling, set up, procedures, etc.”

“We were extremely pleased with the staff (super friendly, very welcoming eve-ry day!) and the activities that were selected were appropriate across all ages.”

“I liked the email reminders and the remind app. Texts were super helpful.”

“Very well done, especially with it being the first time to consolidate. The staff was cheerful and friendly every single time during arrival and dismissal. I felt

the staff treated the children with kindness and dignity.”

“Thank you for all you do for the students.”

All comments and suggestions have been very much appreciated, we read through them thoroughly.
