Ottorino Respighi Fontane di Roma; Pini di Roma; Feste Romane

    Sinfonia of London, John Wilson

CHSA 5261£9.00 1 HYBRID SACD 31/07/20 CHANDOS RECORDS

Following the widespread critical acclaim of their first two recordings – including a BBC Music Magazine Award – John Wilson and the Sinfonia of London turn to Respighi’s Roman Trilogy for their third release. Born in Bologna in 1879, Respighi trained as a violinist and composer, and travelled extensively. His influences are therefore wide-ranging, from Richard Strauss and Debussy to Rimsky-Korsakov (who taught him orchestration) in addition to a love of – and fascination with – Plainsong and music of the Italian baroque. Fountains of Rome was the first of these three great tone poems, composed between 1913 and 1916, and inspired by a series of photographs given to him by the artist Edita Broglio. Intensely programmatic, the work sees Respighi setting out to evoke ‘sentiments and visions suggested… by four of Rome’s fountains contemplated at the hour in which their character is most in harmony with the surrounding landscape, or in which their beauty appears most impressive to the observer’... This recording was made in Surround Sound and is available as a Hybrid SACD.

Sir Edward Elgar: Violin Sonata in E minor, Op. 82; Ralph Vaughan Williams: Sonata in A minor, The Lark Ascending (original 1914 version)

    Jennifer Pike, Martin Roscoe

    CHAN 20156 £9.00 1 CD 31/07/20 CHANDOS RECORDS

Following the success of her last album, The Polish Violin , Jennifer Pike now turns to a programme of English music that represents an essential part of her musical make-up. It was the music of Elgar that first drew her to the violin, and The Lark Ascending has featured in her programming - in many versions – throughout her career. Here we have the original version for Violin and Piano from 1914, much less frequently played than the ‘standard’ orchestral version, but fascinating for the new light it shines on such a well-known piece. Writing it against the backdrop of the First World War, Vaughan Williams took both inspiration and the title from a poem by George Meredith. Although his first sketches for a Violin Sonata date from 1887, Elgar’s Violin Sonata is one of the four late masterpieces that Elgar composed in 1918 – 19, at Brinkwells in Sussex in his final creative flush. As with The Lark, this work was composed under the shadow of the Great War. Like Elgar, Vaughan Williams wrote his only Violin Sonata towards the end of his life. Representing a culmination of the development of his compositional style, he weaves fantasy and pastoralism into the strictures of sonata form. Jennifer Pike is joined for this album by one of her regular musical partners, the pianist Martin Roscoe.

    Dame Ethel Smyth The Prison

Experiential Orchestra, Experiential Chorus, Sarah Brailey, Dashon Burton, James Blachly

    CHSA 5279 £9.00 1 HYBRID SACD 07/08/20 CHANDOS RECORDS

August 18th marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Constitutional Amendment, granting women in the US the right to vote. A fitting time then for our release of the World Premier Recording of Ethel Smyth’s late masterpiece The Prison. Smyth left home at nineteen to study composition in Leipzig. In the company of Clara Schumann and her teacher Heinrich von Herzogenberg, she met and won the admiration of composers such as Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Dvořák, and Grieg. Smyth was the first woman to have an opera performed at the Met, in 1903. (The second was Kaija Saariaho, whose L’Amour de loin appeared there in 2016!) Smyth later became central to the Suffragette movement in England, writing the March of the Women. Her gender politics and sexuality were cause for attacks by critics, and she famously went to prison herself for throwing a stone through an MP’s window. Composed in 1930 and premiered in 1931 in Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, The Prison is a Symphony in two parts, ‘Close on Freedom’ and ‘The Deliverance’, set for soprano and bass-baritone soloists, chorus, and full orchestra. The text is taken from a philosophical work by Henry Bennet Brewster and concerns the writings of a prisoner in solitary confinement, his reflections on life and his preparations for death. The album is recorded in Surround Sound and available as a Hybrid SACD.

Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 5; Gerald Finzi: Clarinet Concerto

    Michael Collins, Philharmonia Orchestra

    BIS2367 £9.00 1 HYBRID SACD 31/07/20 BIS

The distinguished clarinettist Michael Collins has in recent years also gained recognition as a conductor, appearing with eminent orchestras across the world. The present disc sees his recording debut as a conductor of symphonic repertoire, from which he has chosen Vaughan Williams’s Fifth Symphony –one of the composer’s best-loved works. Written during the Second World War and with its symphonic predecessor displaying a convulsive fury and desolation, the Fifth is surprisingly serene and pastoral. Vaughan Williams dedicated it ‘without permission’ to Jean Sibelius – who in his diary described his impression on first hearing the work as ‘a caress from a summer world.’ On the present disc, Vaughan Williams is followed by his younger colleague and friend Gerald Finzi, who he once advised to write a symphony: ‘They’re ever so easy’. Finzi was not convinced, and remains known as a composer of primarily vocal music, but among his few instrumental works is a Concerto for Clarinet, the instrument widely regarded as the most voice-like of all. For this, Michael Collins reverts to his customary role as soloist, conducting the strings of the Philharmonia Orchestra from the clarinet.

Erik Satie Vexations: Noriko Ogawa plays Erik Satie on an 1890 Erard Piano, Vol. 3

    Noriko Ogawa

    BIS2325 £9.00 1 HYBRID SACD 31/07/20 BIS

Of all the enigmas that surround Erik Satie and his music, Vexations is probably the most enigmatic. A ‘theme’ in the bass, with two different harmonisations, to be played – according to an ambiguous note on the composer’s autograph – 840 times. That is at least how it has been interpreted since the first public performance, which lasted more than 18 hours and was organized by the composer John Cage in 1963. When Satie wrote Vexations is uncertain, and although it is usually assumed to be intended for a keyboard instrument, that is also impossible to confirm. There are no known performances of it in the composer’s lifetime, and the single-page manuscript was only discovered after Satie’s death. The many question marks surrounding the work have made it a cult classic, and live performances – by a single pianist or several performers taking turns – are events that still attract attention, even if only a few in the audience sit out a complete performance. As part of her acclaimed Satie cycle, Noriko Ogawa now offers a bite-sized taste (142 repeats, 80 minutes long) of the ‘Vexation experience’, with a twist – as she explains in the liner notes she has chosen to perform Vexations in a manner that may seem controversial to purists: ‘Satie’s work is itself a challenge to conventional performing tradition, so why not challenge him?’

Ludwig van Beethoven Works for Guitar and Piano

    Franz Halász, Débora Halász

    BIS2505 £9.00 1 HYBRID SACD 31/07/20 BIS

Around 1800 Vienna was, alongside Paris, one of the European centres for guitar performance. The instrument was well suited for the idiom of Viennese classicism and ideal for domestic music-making and it was promoted by figures such as the virtuoso Mauro Giuliani and the composer/publisher Anton Diabelli. But Beethoven, the towering giant of musical Vienna, seems to have been unmoved by the charms of the guitar – while instead composing for its sibling, the mandolin. Duo Halász, the husband and wife team of Franz and Débora Halász, has now rectified this, by appropriating Beethoven’s four extant pieces for mandolin and piano (WoO 43 and 44) as well as adapting some other early compositions, including the Serenade in D major for flute and piano and the Variations on Mozart’s ‘Se vuol ballare’ for violin and piano. In doing so they follow the example of an eminent guitarist and contemporary of Beethoven, namely Ferdinando Carulli, whose 1825 arrangement of the Variations on Mozart’s ‘Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen’ closes the programme. Franz and Débora Halász have made a number of recordings for BIS, together and separately, to critical acclaim, including a Latin Grammy Award for their disc Alma Brasileira with chamber works by Radamés Gnattali.

Voices of Angels Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble, Andrej Power, Lawrence Power, Christianne Stotijn

    BIS2344 £9.00 1 HYBRID SACD 31/07/20 BIS

The Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble is – as the name implies – based in Stockholm, and consists of five of the city’s leading musicians. Project-based and often inviting guest performers, the SSE is known for its imaginative programmes built around a particular event or concept and bringing together music from various genres and eras. For its first disc on BIS the ensemble has taken Brett Dean’s Voices of Angels as their point of departure, a work scored for the same forces as Schubert’s ‘Trout quintet’ and inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s first two Duino Elegies: ‘Angels (it’s said) are often unable to tell whether they move amongst the living or the dead.’ Dean’s work from 1996 opens a programme which ranges from Bach to Sofia Gubaidulina, and includes various scorings for between two and six performers. The angels reappear in songs by Wagner and Gubaidulina performed by Christianne Stotijn, one of the ensemble’s guests on this disc – but it is also safe to assume that they are standing around the heavenly throne which Bach approaches in the chorale prelude ‘Vor Deinen Thron tret ich hiermit’ –here transcribed for strings. The same prelude is the subject of Gubaidulina’s Meditation, while the disc closes with a work by Gubaidulina’s friend Alfred Schnittke, namely his Hymn for cello and double bass.

    Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 4

Essi Luttinen, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Leif Segerstam

    ABCD454 £9.00 1 CD 14/08/20 ALBA RECORDS

The ten symphonies of Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) have sometimes been likened to a great autobiographical novel, each symphony constituting a chapter in itself while at the same time being an integral part of an unfolding narrative. Within this narrative flow, the fourth symphony (1899–1900) represents a magical pool of tranquility. Mahler drew on various sources in his symphony, one of them being Das himmlische Leben (1892). He originally intended this to be an independent song, but then had ideas of making it the finale of his giant third symphony before ultimately transferring it to his fourth. The song is a naïve vision of the joys of heaven seen through the eyes of a child; the symphony is, as a result, Mahler’s most optimistic and relaxed. True, it does have some more shadowy moments, but they do not make the heart bleed or seriously disturb the overall mood.

    Johannes Brahms The Cello Sonatas

    Markus Hohti, Emil Holmström

    ABCD452 £9.00 1 CD 14/08/20 ALBA RECORDS

On their new release, cellist Markus Hohti and pianist Emil Holmström perform Brahms’ two cello sonatas on period instruments. The sonatas were composed at very different stages of the composer’s musical career. The sonata in E minor is the first ‘duo sonata’ that Brahms wrote, and the music still exudes a sense of the Romantic unpredictability so typical of his earlier output, a phenomenon that appears, for instance, in momentary shifts to what might even be considered naïve compositional solutions. The F major sonata, meanwhile, is the work of a mature, experienced composer; it revels in compositional fun and games, and one of its most prominent features is the virtuosic approach to the instrumental writing.

    Duke Ellington Sacred Concert

    Anu Komsi, Marzi Nyman

    ABCD450 £9.00 1 CD 14/08/20 ALBA RECORDS

Duke Ellington wrote Sacred Concert in the mid-1960’s and performed the work with his orchestra and various soloists between 1966 and 1974 at churches around the USA and Europe. Ellington never wrote a score of Sacred Concerts, and it wasn’t until 1993 when John Høybye and Peder Pedersen produced a score mostly meant for choirs, but including the full vocal lines and harmonies. Ellington’s own performances were all different. The amount and order of the movements and everything about interpretation was agreed just before the start of each show, and the musicians and soloists improvised in true jazz style. The movements of Sacred Concert are reflections and allusions of traditional gospel songs and the historic roots of soul music in America, and the songs sung by black slaves in the hellish working conditions of the cotton fields. The threads of freedom, brotherhood, God’s mercy and praise run through each lyric. The album was recorded at the Kokkola Church in 2017, one long take at a time, making the improvisation sections genuine. The choir parts have been recorded post-production in a studio by Anu and Marzi.

Felix Mendelssohn, Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel The Mendelssohn Siblings

    The Rödberg Trio

    ABCD451 £9.00 1 CD 14/08/20 ALBA RECORDS

On their debut album, The Rödberg Trio showcases Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn’s works on period instruments. As children, the two composers both received the same, first-class education. However, it is widely and lazily accepted that only a man could dedicate his life to music, while a woman couldn’t, and so it is hardly surprising that Fanny’s catalogue of works is much more concise than that of her brother. The Rödberg Trio wished to reflect the siblings through a pair of works written for the same chamber ensemble. Though their respective musical languages share many points of similarity, their individual artistic personalities shine through in a fascinating manner. The trio decided to omit the standard composer biography from the album’s booklet, and instead the space is dedicated to pianist Matleena Nyman’s incisive essay exploring women’s role in the music world today.

    ABCD453 £9.00 1 CD 14/08/20 ALBA RECORDS

Virpi Räisänen, one of Finland’s most internationally sought-after mezzo-sopranos, has released a new album! Räisänen combines her talent as a violinist-singer on the new release. The Trasparente album consists of songs composed or arranged for Räisänen, and they are now recorded for the first time while playing and singing at the same time. This Virpi’s virtuoso like way of performing has become known as the Viulaja project. “The Trasparente album was born from my wish to document pieces composed for my unique combination, where I’m searching for the limits of expression in managing two simultaneous instruments. This challenge has also seemed to fascinate composers to whom I have presented my project and who have wanted to compose pieces for Viulaja.” Räisänen says.

Juan Chrisóstomo Arriaga The Three String Quartets

    Aeolian Quartet

    CC9117 £6.40 1 CD 07/08/20 CAMEO CLASSICS

In 1819 Arriaga’s opera Los esclavos felices appeared, of which only fragments remain. There were additionally some piano pieces, motets and patriotic hymns, amounting to about 20 works by 1821. In September of that year Arriaga left Spain. He met the Spanish ambassador in Paris, and the composer Cherubini, at that time one of the inspectors of the Paris Conservatoire. There he was admitted to the counterpoint class of a newly appointed professor Francois-Joseph Fétis (1784-1871), and to the violin class of Pierre Baillot. His Conservatoire prizes included those for counterpoint and fugue in both 1823 and 1824 – the year that Fétis took him as a teaching assistant. During these years Arriaga revised, and perhaps destroyed, several earlier works as well as producing a regular flow of new compositions. The three string quartets, probably written before 1822, were published in 1824. Arriaga was buried in the cemetery at Montmarte, his death, as reported by Fétis to his father, was attributed to overwork, exhaustion and an infection of the lungs. On the death of his father in 1836 the composer’s papers were divided between various family members and only reunited in the 1880s in such a way that an impression of his legacy could be made.

Nikolai Kapustin, Alfred Schnittke Transitions - Cello Concertos

Eckart Runge, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Frank Strobel

    C5362 £9.00 1 CD 07/08/20 CAPRICCIO

The jazz-classical-modern fusion of Ukrainian composer Nikolai Kapustin (b. 1937) has recently become an exciting element of classical concert programmes. When the cellist Eckart Runge visited Kasputin in Moscow ten years ago, the composer entrusted him with the score of his Cello Concerto No. 1 op. 85, which, unlike his second, had neither been performed nor recorded. The work’s energy uniquely combines colourful symphonic music with the groovy sound of the big band tradition, the virtuosity of a Charlie Parker with the chamber music intimacy of a Miles Davis, producing a vibrantly new musical language. With his fascinating, poly-stylistic sound world that he made his own, Alfred Schnittke is recognised as a 20th-century composer who is now permanently established in the repertoire, some two decades after his death. The Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 1 was commissioned by the City of Munich for the inauguration of the Gasteig Cultural Centre in 1985/86.

Ferruccio Busoni Early Masterpieces; Piano Works from his Youth (The Complete Published Pieces)

    Holger Groschopp

    C5416 £15.00 3 CD 07/08/20 CAPRICCIO

Ferruccio Busoni was undoubtedly a child prodigy, and although his maturity as a young pianist can only be indirectly evidenced by contemporary reports, his early compositions clearly reveal an astonishing technical command. In particular, he demonstrated a sure instinct for part-writing and counterpoint, even before he had received systematic teaching in these disciplines. Busoni connoisseurs will detect in these works an unexpected foreshadowing of pieces from his mature period. Others will simply find joy in this wealth of piano music, some of the items standing comparison with works by Schumann, Mendelssohn, Reinecke and Grieg.

John F. Larchet Complete Songs & Airs

Raphaele Mangan, Gavan Ring, Mia Cooper, Verity Simmons, Niall Kinsella

    CHRCD151 £7.29 1 CD 21/08/20 CHAMPS HILL RECORDS

Pianist Niall Kinsella presents the complete songs and airs of Irish composer John Francis Larchet (1884–1967). This is the first time Larchet’s complete songs have been presented on disc, and many of those heard here are world premiere recordings. Kinsella first encountered Larchet’s songs at university and was keen to find more, but discovered that many of the songs were difficult to access and long out of print. With the help of the Larchet family, Kinsella has gradually collected every song that Larchet composed across the span of his career. Kinsella writes: “I see this project not only as a revival of Larchet’s songs but also as an acknowledgement and celebration of the rich contribution that he has made to musical life in Ireland. Larchet was an integral part of the Irish literary revival at the beginning of the 20th century, writing music for the plays of Yeats, Lady Gregory and Synge, displaying a real skill for building and sustaining drama” Larchet’s marriage of text and music shows the qualities of invention and wholehearted lyricism which characterise his music. Curated by Niall Kinsella (piano), this album features Raphaela Mangan (mezzo-soprano), Gavan Ring (baritone), joined by violinist Mia Cooper and ‘cellist Verity Simmons. His songs are paired on this album with his two sets of Irish Airs for violin and piano. This is the first album to be dedicated to the works of John F. Larchet, showcasing the music of one of Ireland’s most influential musicians.

    555335-2 £18.00 2 CD 31/07/20 CPO

Nikola Šubić Zrinski ranks ahead of Jakov Gotovac’s Ero the Joker as the most prestigious and historically most important Croatian opera of all time. Its composer, Ivan Zajc, even gave his name to the Rijeka Opera. cpo is now presenting the first complete recording of this opera for distribution not only in Croatia but also beyond this country’s borders. Following the performance, on which our recording is based, the singers and the presentation as a whole received rave reviews from the press and the critical guild, with Robert Kolar reaping special praise as the best Zrinski ever! The fact that musicologists refer to the relevant phase in Croatian music history as »the Zajc period« reflects the central importance of Ivan Edler von Zajc in Zagreb’s music world and the significant role played by him in Croatian art music in general. The Croatian writer Hugo Badalić drew on Zriny, a tragedy by the German dramatist Theodor Körner, in his libretto for the opera Nikola Šubić Zrinski. The story behind it is based on the historic Battle of Szigeth of 1566. The composer conducted the premiere of this work regarded as the Croatian national opera at the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb on 4 November 1876.

Leopold Anton Kozeluch Piano Trios, Vol. 3

    Trio 1790

    555096-2 £6.90 1 CD 31/07/20 CPO

The three piano trios by Leopold Kozeluch recorded here are from 1786 and 1787 and were initially published independently by their composer. Already a few months later, however, reprints appeared in Paris, London, Offenbach, Mannheim, and Speyer – which shows just how well known and popular his music was at the time. Even before, in 1781, Kozeluch enjoyed such a fine reputation that the Archbishop of Salzburg offered him the post of court organist, succeeding Mozart. The piano trios on this recording for the most part display a mirthful and relaxed character, with spirited joy of performance along with virtuosic design sometimes holding sway in the piano part. Here Kozeluch reveals his masterful talent for the instrumentation of the musical material assigned to the three instruments as well as his penchant for highly imaginative thematic elaboration. Some of the movements occasionally even exhibit melodic and harmonic designs anticipating the style of a nocturne by John Field or Frédéric Chopin.

Dietrich Buxtehude Complete Organ Works, Vol. 1

    Friedhelm Flamme

    555253-2 £18.00 1 CD 31/07/20 CPO

Friedhelm Flamme’s series featuring organ works of the Northern German Baroque now finds its logical continuation with Dietrich Buxtehude, the leading master in the discipline of Northern German organ artistry. In order to underscore his special interpretive style, the result of his many decades of occupation with practically the entire Northern German repertoire, Flamme has selected the Treutmann organ in the Grauhof Monastery near Goslar, an instrument that has been preserved largely in its original form and conveys Buxtehude’s innovative, visionary musical artistry in a very different way than the well-known Schnitger organs in Northern Germany. Each CD is designed in the manner of an exciting concert program revealing two things: first, the variety of Buxtehude’s compositions, which include free pieces and chorale settings to be executed on the manuals or with virtuosic pedal playing and occur in styles ranging from nimble canzonettas and basso ostinato forms filled with gravity to strict textures in »erudite counterpoint«; second, the vast tonal resources of the Treutmann organ, both in the sense of varietas and in view of the line of suspense traced by the musical keys. It is thus that Vol. 1 forms the beginning with magnificent works by the most important Baroque master of organ artistry prior to Johann Sebastian Bach and along with him.

    Oscar Straus Piano Concerto; Serenade

Oliver Triendl, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Ernst Theis

    555280-2 £9.00 1 CD 31/07/20 CPO

Since Oscar Straus began his career in the cabaret, it was only natural for him to bet on comedy in his first operetta, Die lustigen Nibelungen (1904), a parody of the Nibelungenlied, Wagner, and Wilhelminism. In this way, Straus, more than any of his Viennese contemporaries, became the heir to Jacques Offenbach, the founder of the genre, whose last period of flourishing influenced Straus (who was born in 1870) as well as Franz Lehár, Leo Fall, and Emmerich Kálmán. Straus’s Serenade for String Orchestra is written in an always-radiant classical style. Especially the last two movements, »Walzer« and »Alla marcia,« have an elegant structure already anticipating the later operettas.

Carl Reinecke Symphonies 1 & 3; König Manfred

    Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Henry Raudales

    555114-2 £9.00 1 CD 31/07/20 CPO

Following the release of Carl Reinecke’s complete string quartets, we are now launching a new recording of his most important symphonic works. His Symphony No. 3 formed the rousing finale of his era as a conductor at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. Reinecke never defended himself verbally against charges by his contemporaries that he was a ‘conventional composer’; instead, he shared the opinion of his critics, stating that he had »never had the audacity to regard himself as a trailblazing genius.« Musically, however, he puts an immediate end to all clichés. Without holding things up with a slow introduction, he has the first movement of his op. 227 storm ahead on its path, full of élan, with defiant chordal beats, driven by syncopated rhythms, and for a time offering space for lyrical secondary ideas. And he offers an extremely rich arsenal of powerful orchestral parts. His Symphony No. 1 in A major was performed six times between 1858 and 1892, which means more than any other symphony by him at the Gewandhaus.

Thea Musgrave The Voices of Our Ancestors

The New York Virtuoso Singers, Harold Rosenbaum

    SRCD387 £8.70 1 CD 07/08/20 LYRITA

Following the international acclaim surrounding Thea Musgrave’s 90th birthday and the success of our 2018 premier recordings of Phoenix Rising, Poets in Love and Loch Ness, Lyrita is delighted to bring this new release dedicated to premier recordings of her choral works. Commissioned by the John Armitage Memorial Trust and the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union, The Voices of our Ancestors is scored for brass quintet (horn, two trumpets, trombone and tuba), organ and SATB choir. The Voices of our Ancestors draws upon ancient texts from a number of linguistic sources, including Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Egyptian and Chinese, all translated into English. The text reflects on some of the existential questions which are still considered today – whether God exists, what death is, what is above or below. It was the last line that especially grabbed Musgrave’s attention: ‘only he who is above understands all this… or perhaps he does not’! She was struck by the open-mindedness of this message, which resonated with her so much that she knew she had to set it to music.

Sergei Prokofiev, Aram Chatschaturjan Orchestral Suites

    Zagreb Philharmonic, Dmitrij Kitajenko

    OC471 £18.00 2 CD 21/08/20 OEHMS CLASSICS

This recording brings together unique orchestral suites by the Soviet composer Sergei Prokofiev and the Soviet-Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian. Summer Night Suite is based on the music from Prokofiev’s opera Betrothal in a Monastery and Scythian Suite was derived from his ballet Ala and Lolly. Aram Khachaturian wrote his Masquerade Suite in 1941 to accompany Mikhail Lermontov’s play of the same name. His ballet Spartacus (1954) portrays the defeat the Romans by the hero Spartacus who leads an uprising of slaves. The suites present a range of moods and variety of melodic invention that are completely engaging. This is the Zagreb Philharmonic’s third recording for the OehmsClassics label. Their recording of Glazunov’s The Seasons, also under the direction of Dmitrij Kitajenko, received an ICMA nomination.

    Mieczysław WeinbergWir Gratulieren! (Congratulations!)

Kammerakademie Potsdam, Katia Guedes, Anna Gütter, Olivia Saragosa, Jeff Martin, Robert Elibay-Hartog, Vladimir Stoupel

    OC990 £18.00 2 CD 21/08/20 OEHMS CLASSICS

After his move to Moscow in 1943, Weinberg had to face widespread anti-Semitism, both among the population and on the part of politicians. This no doubt encouraged him to compose his opera Congratulations! specifically for the entertainment and edification of the discerning Jewish community in Moscow in the mid-1970s. It is a work full of Jewish topoi that at the same time plays out under the veneer of being Socialist, no doubt to get past the Soviet censors and ensure production. Here, the ‘rich people’ are clearly identified as the enemies and suppressors, and they must be disempowered. The original text for the opera, to which Weinberg himself made only few amendments, derives from Sholem Aleichem (1859–1916), the ‘Jewish Mark Twain’. Today, we are familiar with Aleichem mainly from his short story Tevye the Dairyman, which later provided the material for the musical Fiddler on the Roof. This recording is of a live performance at the Konzerthaus Berlin by the Kammerakademie Potsdam under Vlademir Stoupel, using Henry Koch’s chamber ensemble version of the work.

Philip Glass Symphony for Solo Piano

    Pawel Markowicz

    OMM0145 £9.00 1 CD 21/08/20 ORANGE MOUNTAIN

Orange Mountain Music is proud to present SYMPHONY FOR SOLO PIANO, a virtuosic solo piano version of Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 8 arranged and performed by Pawel Markowicz. In late-2005 and early 2006, Glass’s Symphony No.8 had its premiere performances in the United States and in Europe by its commissioner, the Bruckner Orchester Linz. The piece, perhaps Glass’s most orchestrationally dynamic symphony, was released on recording in May 2006. At that time, Markowitz, a gifted teenage Austria pianist heard the new Glass symphony, bought the OMM recording which was released in May 2006, and acquired the full orchestral score to the new work. For the better part of the last 14 years has been refining, practicing, and perfecting his solo piano reduction of the extremely complicated work. Glass’s Eight Symphony is a watershed moment of sorts. Beginning right around the Millennium, Glass’s creative life went into overdrive. The year 2005 saw not only the premiere of his Seventh Symphony but also his grand opera Waiting for the Barbarians and no fewer than five major film scores. In the midst of this was the composition of his Eighth Symphony which stands alone among his extant twelve symphonies for many reasons.

Philip Glass, Tenzin Choegyal The Last Dalai Lama? - music composed by Philip Glass and Tenzin Choegyal

    Various Artists

    OMM0146 £9.00 1 CD 21/08/20 ORANGE MOUNTAIN

Orange Mountain Music presents the original soundtrack to the documentary “THE LAST DALAI LAMA?” Over the period of many years, filmmaker Mickey Lemle set about capturing a portrait of His Holines the Dalai Lama, now in his mid-80s, as he travelled the world talking about his life, compassion, his discilines, and his work. The film presents a number of captivating testimonials from clerics not in the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, to advocates and allies, to a former president of the United States. The film commissioned original music from Philip Glass and Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal. The score is performed by Glass and Michael Riesman on pianos, Tenzin Choegyal on vocals and various Tibetan instruments like lingbu and dranyen, Tim Fain on Violin, Robert Black on double bass, and the Scorchio String Quartet and Choegyal performing “Snow Lion.” Another quintessential traditional offering “Om Ma Mi Phad may Hum” can be heard in “Heart Strings,” sung by 150 Tibetan children from the Tibetan Children’s Village School in Dharmasala, India. The album ends with Philip Glass’s own performance of Mad Rush, performed live on the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. Glass is featured in the film discussing the Dalai Lama and playing Mad Rush, a piece which was composed for the Dalai Lama’s first public address in New York in 1978. Back then, the organizers asked Glass for a “piece of indeterminate length” and the composer was happy to oblige.

    Johannes Brahms The Cello Sonatas

    Daniel Müller-Schott, Francesco Piemontesi

    C979201 £9.00 1 CD 07/08/20 ORFEO

Johannes Brahms’ two cello sonatas stand in stark contrast to each other. This is not solely due to the fact that more than twenty years separate the works. Brahms had a preference for pairs of works with the same instrumentation, which he frequently composed according to the principle of contrast. In the case of the cello sonatas, it is above all the character and mood of the respective pieces that supply the contrasts. In the version for cello, the Violin Sonata op. 78, one of Brahms’ finest chamber works, provides a charming supplement to the two original cello sonatas. Cellist Daniel Müller-Schott and pianist Francesco Piemontesi team up again for this all-Brahms programme after the great success of their recording of cello sonatas by 20th century composers (C872151).

When the ORFEO label was established in Munich forty years ago, surely no one familiar with the music scene at the time would have predicted that the record company would develop into a firmly established player on the classical music market. One of the label’s main priorities in the early years was vocal music, with opera rarities top of the list and, from the mid-1980s onwards, the re-use of historic tape recordings. Big names featured on the label’s own productions, while ORFEO also developed into a talent factory by discovering and nurturing young artists. This “Legendary Voices” 10-CD boxed set marking ORFEO’s 40th anniversary features an incomparable line-up of eleven singers who made a huge contribution to the art of opera singing. Nostalgia and excellence combine to make this an irresistible package.

    PBP 13 £9.00 1 CD 31/07/20 PBO

George Frideric Handel lavished particular attention on the contralto or mezzo-soprano roles in his operas and oratorios throughout the years. What better way to celebrate the lush arias that Handel composed for his contralto stars than with Avery Amereau—described by The New York Times as “an extraordinary American alto on the rise”—alongside Handelian scholar Nicholas McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. Featuring virtuosic, passionate, stirring arias throughout Handel’s composing career—from his early Aci, Galatea e Polifemo (1708) to his later Alcina (1735)—this recording brings to life the incredible music once sung by Nicolini, Senesino, and Carestini. This debut album by Amereau marks the last recording of Nicholas McGegan at the helm of PBO.

Since 2015, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale and Pulitzer Prize- and GRAMMY Award-winning composer Caroline Shaw have developed a strong artistic relationship. Alongside Shaw’s first commission for the organization, a song called “Red, Red Rose” composed for the Orchestra and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, PBO established its New Music for Old Instruments initiative, an effort to commission and perform new works written expressly for period instruments. Subsequently, Shaw wrote two more songs for PBO and von Otter (“And So” and “The Edge”), and in 2019 composed a large-scale oratorio for the Orchestra, Chorale, and soloists Avery Amereau and Dashon Burton entitled The Listeners. This CD encompasses PBO’s blossoming relationship with Caroline Shaw, featuring the full collection of PBO/Shaw commissions thus far.

Her sultry, throbbing voice is well suited to romantic ballads such as He’s Funny That Way or It’s The Talk Of The Town, but she can be equally thrilling belting out a red-hot jazz number like Red Hot Mama. Overall, The Kiss Of Fire gives the most generous and balanced single-CD coverage of a fine, underrated artist.

Henrique Oswald: Piano Concerto; Camille Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No. 5, ‘Egyptian’; Alberto Nepomuceno: Suite Antiga, Op. 11

Clélia Iruzun, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Jac van Steen

    SOMMCD 276 £7.29 1 CD 21/08/20 SOMM RECORDINGS

SOMM Recordings is pleased to announce the return of the acclaimed partnership of pianist Clélia Iruzun and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jac van Steen with two colourful late-19th-century Romantic Piano Concertos from Brazil and France: Henrique Oswald’s G minor Piano Concerto, Op.10 and the Fifth Piano Concerto in F major (Op.103) by Camille Saint-Saëns. Iruzun’s Brazilian compatriot Henrique Oswald shared a long friendship with Camille Saint-Saëns based on mutual admiration for each other as composers and pianists. They occasionally performed together some of Saint-Saëns’ music for two pianos in public recitals. Saint-Saëns’ exotic Fifth Piano Concerto, the Egyptian, was composed during a North African holiday in 1896. Combining complex piano writing with a deft lightness of touch, it boasts a lyrical main theme (described by Saint-Saëns as “a Nubian love song”), hypnotic echoes of the gamelan and a finale bursting with virtuosity. Oswald’s Piano Concerto was composed in Italy a decade before Saint-Saëns’ Egyptian. With bravura passages recalling Saint-Saëns’ Second Piano Concerto, its richly Romantic vein carries allusions to Fauré while brimming with Oswald’s intriguing native Brazilian rhythms.

Edward Elgar Elgar from America, Vol. II: Violin Concerto; Introduction and Allegro for Strings; Cockaigne Overture Yehudi Menuhin, Mischa Mischakoff, Edwin Bachmann, Carlton Cooley, Frank Miller, NBC Symphony Orchestra, Malcolm Sargent, Arturo Toscanini

    ARIADNE 5008 £7.29 1 CD 21/08/20 SOMM RECORDINGS

SOMM RECORDINGS is delighted to announce Elgar from America, Volume II: the first commercial release of three historic performances from 1940s’ New York featuring legendary Elgarian interpreters including violinist Yehudi Menuhin and conductors Malcolm Sargent and Arturo Toscanini at the helm of the NBC Symphony Orchestra. The results offer a fascinating transatlantic perspective on a titan of British music while revealing his musical legacy in a country he visited annually from 1905-07 and again in 1911. The featured recordings date from the first half of the 1940s and have been restored and remastered by the multi-award-winning audio restoration engineer Lani Spahr, who also provides informative booklet notes. Menuhin, long associated with Elgar since his 1932 recording of the Violin Concerto, is heard here in a 1945 performance of the work, abbreviated to fit radio constraints of time. It is conducted by Sargent who also leads an account of Cockaigne (In London Town) Concert-Overture from the same year. Toscanini’s 1940 performance of the Introduction and Allegro for Strings marks the only time he conducted it with the NBC SO, joined here by Mischa Mischakoff and Edwin Bachmann violins, Carlton Cooley viola, Frank Miller cello.

    Nordic Master Composers Maria Kihlgren

    CDA1842 £8.70 1 CD 07/08/20 STERLING

My earlier CDs, with the exception of a personal portrait recorded in 1990, have special themes. One of them, Music from the Mediterranean (Sterling CDA 1664-2), contains music by composers from countries bordering on the Mediterranean. Another, Romantic Silhouettes (Sterling CDA 1680-2), is a cross-section through a century of Romantic music by composers from central Europe. The present disc, Nordic Master Composers, includes four major works by some of the Nordic countries’ top composers. As I live in that part of the world myself, it felt right to make a record of Nordic music – even if no Icelandic works are featured. All the composers are different in character, but they still have a musical style in common. - Maria Kihlgren

    5060192781007 £9.00 1 CD 07/08/20 STONE RECORDS

This is the second CD in a four-disc series that will comprise the first complete recording of the songs of John Ireland (1879-1962) for voice and piano, performed by baritone Mark Stone and pianist Sholto Kynoch. Featuring his settings of William Blake, James Vila Blake, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ernest Dowson and Arthur Symons, it includes his well-known cycles “Songs of a Wayfarer” and “Marigold” as well as some of his less often performed unison songs. The breadth of style in both music and text across this programme is extraordinary, showing a composer whose talents allowed him to produce both beautiful songs of childlike simplicity and compositions of incredible harmonic complexity.

Cellist Jonah Kim and pianist Sean Kennard have been making music together since they were teenagers at the Curtis Institute of Music and together they have played almost every sonata in the standard repertoire. The Rachmaninoff Sonata and the Sonata by Samuel Barber hold a special place for them: The Rachmaninoff was the first sonata they worked on together, and Kim’s teacher at Curtis was Orlando Cole, who premiered the Sonata with Barber himself at the piano. Both Sonatas shine as big, romantic works with broad, rhapsodic strokes and superb melodies. Kim and Kennard give stunning performances, putting these young performers at the top of their generation for technique and interpretation. Jonah Kim and Sean Kennard are active across Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify with over 5,000 followers, subscribers and monthly listeners. Ludwig van Beethoven Serenade for Ludwig: Flute Chamber Music

Luisa Sello, Bruno Canino, Myriam Dal Don, Giuseppe Mari

    CDS7886 £7.00 1 CD 21/08/20 DYNAMIC

The programme on this release is completed by the arrangement for flute and piano of the slow movement from the Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15, a work Beethoven composed in 1798 and first published in 1800. The transcription is by Theobald Böhm (Munich, 1794–1881), a famous flute virtuoso and instrument maker, who developed a new type of metal flute which revolutionised the fingering system in use up to then and has remained virtually identical to this day. he programme on this release offers a comparison between two Serenades that Beethoven wrote for two different groups of instruments: the Serenade Op. 25 for flute, violin and viola and the Serenade Op. 41, which is a later version for flute and piano. Formally these two works are almost identical, but they differ in colour, phrasing and the role that was ascribed to each instrument.

    Alinde Quartett

    HC19071 £9.00 1 CD 07/08/20 HANSSLER CLASSIC

The Alinde Quartett took its name from a song of Franz Schubert. For the first time, the thought occured to the musicians to record Schubert’s string quartets. Not particularly imaginative, one could say. But they couldn’t shake it, excitement overtook them. Euphoria. Soon the course was set: in 2028 the world will commemorate Schubert’s 200th year of death. The Alinde Quartett is going to record all of the string quartets from his pen until then. A journey, a challenge. From the 13-year-old’s first work until the herculean, celebrated G major Quartet from his last year of life, 18 years later. Time was short for Schubert. On every CD, the Schubert quartets appear alongside a new work. In total six composers were commissioned.

Tzvi Avni was born in Saarbrücken on 2 September 1927. In 1935 the Steinke family, as the Avnis were called at that time, went to what was then Palestine. After the state of Israel had been founded, Tzvi Avni studied at the Israel Music Academy in Tel Aviv. In 1962 he continued his studies in the USA in New York and under Aaron Copland in Tanglewood. In 1971 he became professor of musical theory and composition at the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance in Jerusalem. Tzvi Avni is a honorary citizen of Tel Aviv and Saarbrücken. The Concerto for piano and with a smaller orchestra was composed in 2009/10 at the instigation of the pianist Heidrun Holtmann as a commission. Tzvi Avni’s solo piano works since the 1990s often seem like a sort of diary, in which he processes episodes and experiences, as well as picking up new ideas and reflecting upon them. Heidrun Holtmann was awarded several prizes at national and international competitions. She performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich as well as with many other symphony and chamber orchestras in Germany and abroad.

You might wonder why a CD of light music should be titled “lollipops”. As a group, the Lochrian Ensemble have always ended their concerts with a few encore pieces from their lighter repertoire. This has become one of their trademark qualities and their audiences always seem to enjoy a little Joplin or a Gershwin tune after a more serious classical programme. A lollipop, in the musical sense, was a term first used by Sir Thomas Beecham in connection with music played at his concerts. For him, a lollipop was an encore in complete contrast to the dramatic, rousing endings to his programmes. He introduced the lollipop, generally a ‘syrupy, soapy, soothing piece’, to ‘reduce the audience’s emotional temperature’. Everyone would then leave the concert hall calm and happy. When they first decided to make a CD, they thought putting together a series of their favourite lollipops might make an attractive recording. Each piece featured on this CD has been used as an encore by them. Not all, however, are of the soothing nature favoured by Sir Thomas. Some, such as Fiddle-Faddle, are fast and furious because, contrary to Sir Thomas, they feel that it does little harm to the audience to leave a concert on an emotional high.

An Introduction to the Piano Christopher Northam

    HS950701 £9.00 1 CD 07/08/20 HOXA

This recording presents performances of some of the best piano music available for beginners. Christopher Northam’s recital covers three centuries, from Byrd to Debussy, and is designed to introduce learners of any age to piano music that will be both satisfying and accessible to their developing talents. It is also certain to please a wider musical audience, not least because many of the pieces are difficult to find on other recordings. The selection mixes well-known pieces (Bach’s Minuet in G, Beethoven’s Für Elise) with unjustly neglected gems.

Samuil Feinberg, Hanus Winterberg The Lost Works

    Nina Pissareva Zymbalist, Christophe Sirodeau

    MLS-CD-011 £9.00 1 CD 07/08/20 MELISM

The recordings on this disc are all world premieres, apart from the Suite, Op.11 by Feinberg, which was recorded by the composer himself in 1929. There is no direct connection between the two twentieth century composers, Samuil Feinberg and Hans (Hanus) Winterberg, one a citzen of Russia and the Soviet Union; the other a decade his junior, of Czechoslovakia and Bavarian Germany. However, they are both among those composers abandoned by history despite the intrinsic merits of their work. The oblivion to which Winterberg was consigned was effectively total, held hostage to a posthumous embargo to which part of his family acceded, until his grandson initiated his rediscovery in 2015. By contrast, Feinberg had at least garnered admiration during his lifetime, and since, for his prowess as pianist and teacher. Both composed in their own very individual idioms, though sometimes making little concession to the listener or to the technical demands placed on the performer. As things have turned out, Christophe Sirodeau has been able to contribute to the salvaging of two works of these composers by editing and preparing their “lost and found” manuscripts for publication (with minimal editorial revisions required for performance). in addition to actually playing and recording them, of course! This sense of discovery of a lost world of music, and of revealing the character of its creators is the impetus behind the programme of this disc.
