Sir Arthur Bliss Mary of Magdala; The Enchantress; Meditations on a Theme by John Blow

Dame Sarah Connolly, James Platt, BBC Symphony Chorus, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sir Andrew Davis

    CHSA 5242 £9.00 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 CHANDOS

Bliss composed The Enchantress in 1951, the year of his sixtieth birthday, for Kathleen Ferrier. The text is a free adaptation of the Second Idyll of Theocritus, made by Henry Reed, and well suited to Bliss’s love of classical Greek authors. Meditations on a Theme by John Blow, from 1955, was written for the CBSO, the first in a number of commissions from the John Feeney Trust. Described as a sacred cantata, Mary of Magdala was Bliss’s second Feeney Trust commission, composed during 1962 and 1963. For a libretto, Bliss turned to Christopher Hassall, his collaborator on three previous works, including The Beatitudes. The BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus give of their best under their former chief conductor Sir Andrew Davis, and the contributions from the soloists, Dame Sarah Connolly and James Platt, are outstanding. Recorded in Surround Sound.

George Antheil Symphony No. 1 ‘Zingareska’; Suite from ‘capital of the World’; McKonkey’s Ferry; Nocturne in Skyrockets; The Golden Bird

    BBC Philharmonic, John Storgårds

    CHAN 20080 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CHANDOS

In this their third volume of orchestral works of Antheil, John Storgårds and the BBC Philharmonic present a collection of scores spanning the whole of Antheil’s compositional life. Written in the early 1920s, the First Symphony is full of Antheil’s enthusiasm for the mechanical, and takes strong leads from the prevailing sound of the jazz era as well as a nostalgic look back to its predecessor, ragtime. His ballet score Capital of the World dates from the mid-1950s, and was based on a short story by Hemmingway. The Golden Bird was originally conceived as a solo piano piece, and in his translation of the piece from piano to orchestra Antheil demonstrates an ability equal to Ravel’s to think simultaneously in two musical media. The concert overture McKonkey’s Ferry is based on a painting of George Washington and his continental army crossing the Delaware River at Christmas 1776 at McKonkey’s Ferry, near Trenton – an event that proved a turning point in the Revolutionary war.

Avet Rubeni Terterian Symphonies Nos 3 and 4

    Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Kirill Karabits

CHSA 5241£9.00 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 CHANDOS

In his homeland, Avet Terterian is regarded, alongside Aram Khachaturian, as the other giant of twentieth-century Armenian music, and as the founder of his nation’s progressive school of composers. His early works follow in the tradition of Khachaturian. From his opera The Ring of Fire (1967) onwards, he developed an advanced musical language embracing atonality, chance elements, and electronics. Another significant influence was the music of Giya Kancheli, and important, too, was the way in which he absorbed aspects of Armenian folk and ancient liturgical music into his personal voice. The backbone of Terterian’s achievement is enshrined in his eight symphonies. In summing them up he wrote: ‘We are all living on the threshold of a terrible apocalyptic judgement. It has always seemed to me that my symphonies are a cry of the soul for salvation and for the forgiveness of sins.’

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei RachmaninoffTchaikovsky: Plus One, Vol. 2 - Grande Sonate; Méditation - Rachmaninoff: Moments Musicaux

    Barry Douglas

    CHAN 20121 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CHANDOS

Tchaikovsky’s Grande Sonate, in G major was dedicated to Karl Klindworth, and first performed at a private hearing in 1879, by Nikolay Rubinstein, founder of the Moscow Conservatory. Composed in the autumn of 1896, the Six Moments musicaux of Rachmaninoff adopt musical forms from previous eras: the nocturne, song without words, barcarolle, virtuoso étude, and theme and variations. Written in haste in order to meet the commission deadline (the twenty-three-year-old Rachmaninoff was desperately short of funds), the set evidences his virtuosity, and is full of portent of the music to come. Barry Douglas writes: ‘This recording project with Chandos Records is a personal salute from me to great masterworks of the Russian repertoire. I am an Irish pianist who, nevertheless, feels a deep affinity with Russian culture, and felt it even before I had the good fortune to win the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1986. Our own Irish composer and virtuoso pianist John Field, who invented the Nocturne and taught a whole generation of Russian musicians, fermented the linkage between Ireland and Russia, and I feel very proud to help keep this synergy alive!’

Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edward Gregson, Paul Mealor, Michael Ball

The Symphonic Euphonium II: David Childs plays Vaughan Williams, Gregson, Mealor, Ball

David Childs, BBC Philharmonic, Ben Gernon

    CHAN 10997 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CHANDOS

Unlocking the full potential of the euphonium as a concerto instrument with symphony orchestra has been an ambition for David Childs since he premiered the orchestral version of Philip Wilby’s Euphonium Concerto in the BBC Young Musician of the Year final in 2000. The four compositions on this album are all results of that ambition, in different ways. Written for the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the London Symphony Orchestra, Vaughan Williams’s Tuba Concerto was premiered, at the anniversary concert in 1954, by the orchestra’s principal tubist, Philip Catelinet. After the premiere the possibility of creating a version for tenor tuba (euphonium) was initiated by Catelinet, Vaughan Williams approved, but its commercial viability was questioned. Over six decades later, with the approval of OUP and the Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust, an edition for tenor tuba and orchestra has been realised for this recording by David Childs and the orchestrator Rodney Newton. The other three concertos on this disc were all commissioned by David Childs.

Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 9

Ann-Helen Moen, Marianne Beate Kielland, Allan Clayton, Neal Davies, Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki

    BIS2451 £9.00 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 BIS

Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Tolstoy’s War and Peace – those works of art that are truly part of the canon of global culture are few and far apart. In music, one work that holds significance for people all over the world is Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and especially its choral finale. Even today, as we are getting ready to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of its creator, the sheer size and complexity of the symphony is daunting. There are some eyewitness accounts from the first performance at the Kärntner-Tor-Theater in Vienna on 7th May 1824: we know for instance that Beethoven was on stage himself throughout the performance, but that owing to his deafness he did not notice the audience’s overwhelming enthusiasm. What the Ninth sounded like that evening in Vienna is something we will never know, however – which is why hearing it in a historically informed performance on period instruments is all the more enlightening. With impeccable credentials from their 65-disc series of Bach’s complete cantatas, and acclaimed recent recordings of Mozart’s Requiem and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki now give us their rendering of Beethoven’s last and greatest symphony, joined by a fine quartet of vocal soloists.

Charles-Valentin Alkan Symphony for piano solo; Concerto for solo piano

    Paul Wee

    BIS2465 £9.00 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 BIS

Charles-Valentin Alkan made his name as pianist in nineteenth-century Paris and seemed poised for a glittering career. But following a series of setbacks he withdrew into a life of relative seclusion, and as he receded from the public eye, so too did his music. It was never entirely forgotten, but it was not until the 1960s and 1970s that Alkan’s works began to emerge from obscurity. To quote the liner notes by Paul Wee, ‘Alkan’s music exhibits a formidable grasp of form and structure, a strong command of melody, a high sense of drama and an unprecedented exploitation of the capabilities of the piano.’ Combined here on one disc – possibly for the first time – are the Symphony and the Concerto for Solo Piano, two pinnacles of Alkan’s legacy. Unusually, the four movements of the Symphony and the three movements of the Concerto are included as seven études within Alkan’s Douze Études dans tous les tons mineurs (Twelve studies in all the minor keys), in 1857 as his Op. 39. As to why Alkan composed these epic works and then hid them away in a set of études, Wee suggests that they are to be seen as ‘a celebration of the piano and its capabilities.’ Paul Wee is a barrister specialising in commercial law and appears regularly before courts and tribunals on behalf of clients including governments, corporations, financial institutions and individuals. Born in Australia, he began his piano studies at the age of four, continuing them in New York City at the Manhattan School of Music. Going on to study law at the University of Oxford, he attempts to balance his love for the piano alongside the demands of a busy international career in law.

Johann Sebastian Bach The Secular Cantatas

    Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki

    BIS2491 £45.00 10 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 BIS

In 1995 Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan began the monumental task of recording J.S. Bach’s extant church cantatas – an adventure that was brought to a close 18 years later. But Bach also composed a number of cantatas for secular occasions of which some twenty works have survived intact. Released on individual discs between 2004 and 2018, Masaaki Suzuki’s recordings of these works have now been gathered in a box set, available as a limited edition. The secular cantatas were written (both the texts and the music) for special events in the family, social, academic or political calendar – a wedding, a birthday celebration, an academic ceremony or a tribute to a prince. Although they were normally only performed once in their original form, Bach was keen to reuse material from them, if the opportunity arose. The best-known examples of using secular arias and choruses with new sacred texts are found in the Christmas Oratorio, for which Bach drew extensively on three festive cantatas written for the Prince-Elector of Saxony and his family. Included in the box is a 156-page booklet with an introduction by Bach specialist Dr Klaus Hofmann (in English, German and French) and the texts of the cantatas with English translations.

Ludwig van Beethoven The Piano Concertos

Ronald Brautigam, Die Kölner Akademie, Michael Alexander Willens

    BIS2274 £18.00 2 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 BIS

As one of the finest pianists of his era and an improviser of genius, Ludwig van Beethoven’s preferred vehicle for musical exploration was the piano. His earliest composition, from 1782, was a set of piano variations and he continued to compose for solo piano until the last years of his life. His interest in the concerto form diminished as his deafness forced him to retire from performing. Nonetheless, with his five piano concertos composed between 1788 and 1809, Beethoven not only achieved a brilliant conclusion to the Classical piano concerto, but also established a new model for the Romantic era: a sort of symphony with obbligato piano which remained a reference point well into the beginning of the twentieth. Ronald Brautigam has already recorded these seminal works with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, in acclaimed performances released between 2008 and 2010. Since then he has also released all of Beethoven’s solo piano music on the fortepiano to universal praise. When Brautigam now returns to the concertos, it is in the company of conductor Michael Alexander Willens and Die Kölner Akademie playing on period instruments. The same team has previously partnered him in an 11-disc survey of Mozart’s piano concertos and it is plain to hear that all involved clearly relish the opportunity to congratulate Beethoven on the eve of his 250th anniversary.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Arno Babajanian, Alfred Schnittke

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky & Arno Babajanian: Piano Trios

Vadim Gluzman, Johannes Moser, Yevgeny Sudbin

    BIS2372 £9.00 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 BIS

In Russian chamber music, a rather special tradition evolved around the piano trio, with a number of composers turning to the genre to write ‘instrumental requiems’. First out was Tchaikovsky with his Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50, ‘à la mémoire d’un grand artiste’, and he was followed by composers such as Rachmaninov, Arensky and Shostakovich. In the case of Tchaikovsky’s trio, the ‘grand artiste’ was the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, and Tchaikovsky chose the trio genre as he felt that a piece for solo piano would be too lightweight and one with orchestral accompaniment would be too showy. The work is in two movements, a Pezzo elegiaco (‘elegiac piece’) and a set of variations, and it begins with the cello playing a moving lament which sets the tone for the entire first movement. The theme returns at the end of the second movement in the form of an impassioned funeral march. Seventy years later, when the Armenian composer and pianist Arno Babajanian (1921—83) wrote his Piano Trio in F sharp minor, he didn’t give it any subtitle, but there’s a grandeur and breadth of scale which rivals Tchaikovsky’s work – and the second movement is thoroughly elegiac in character. The trio is Babajanian’s best-known work, composed in the Romantic style of Rachmaninov, but also rooted in Armenian folk music, melodically as well as rhythmically. Performing the two works are Vadim Gluzman and Yevgeny Sudbin, both with Russian roots, joined by cellist Johannes Moser, and the three close the disc with Sudbin’s arrangement of a brief Tango by Alfred Schnittke.

    Sergei Prokofiev Piano Sonatas 3, 8 & 9

    Freddy Kempf

    BIS2390 £9.00 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 BIS

Sergei Prokofiev virtually grew up at the keyboard –he composed for the piano from early childhood, and the instrument was his workshop and laboratory. Well before the end of his student days he had absorbed the virtuoso techniques of Rachmaninov and Scriabin, and to these he added his own brilliant, sharp-edged virtuosity, marked by a keen contrast between dramatic, hard-driven passages and more intimate and gentle lyrical moments. His nine sonatas therefore hold a very special place in his output and represent his language at its most personal, free of any external dramatic, verbal or visual associations: they contain the essential Prokofiev. Freddy Kempf has previously recorded four of the sonatas, released on BIS-1260 and -1820 to critical acclaim: ‘Kempf is joyfully exuberant, flashing through every savage challenge with the assurance and instinct of a born virtuoso’ (Gramophone). With this release, he adds another three sonatas to his discography, starting with Sonata No. 3 in A minor which Prokofiev premièred in Petrograd in April 1918. Three weeks later he left Russia and only returned in 1936, after seventeen years spent in the USA, Germany and France. Premièred in 1944, Sonata No. 8 is the third and last of the so-called ‘War Sonatas’ –possibly less virtuosic than its predecessors, it has a wide emotional range, with unexpected depths. His final, ninth sonata Prokofiev wrote for Sviatoslav Richter, saying: ‘Don’t think it’s intended to create an effect.’ Often almost improvisatory, it was the last work he completed before the infamous 1948 decrees that disciplined many Soviet composers, and the first performance did not take place until 1951.

Håkan Hardenberger, Roger Muraro, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, Martyn Brabbins

    BIS2293 £9.00 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 BIS

Alongside his celebrated performances of the classical repertory, Håkan Hardenberger is also renowned as a pioneer of significant new trumpet works. The three works on this disc were all composed with him in mind, and illustrate his many-facetted musical persona. The most recent of them, ‘True Stories’ by Betsy Jolas, was written in order to give Hardenberger and Roger Muraro occasion to perform together. Its title springs from the fact that the work forms the composer’s first attempt to work with sounds selected from daily life and either ‘tamed’ through stylization or left quasi crude. Sally Beamish found inspiration for her concerto in Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities which, in her own words, ‘reflects aspects of city life: the organised architecture but seeming randomness; the sparkling though shabby beauty, in contrast to the dark, sordid underbelly –rusting pipes, waste, squalor.’ Finally, in …miramondo multiplo…, Olga Neuwirth incorporates stylistic and melodic references, for instance from her own works and the music of Handel, but also to the performance style of the jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, lending each movement a musical atmosphere of its own. As a result, the concerto has been described as ‘a sequence of five very different musical stories’. The conductor in all three works is Martyn Brabbins, whose credentials in the field of contemporary music are impressive, having conducted hundreds of world premières across the globe.

Affinities: Greek and German Art Songs Fanie Antonelou, Kerstin Mörk

    BIS2439 £9.00 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 BIS

The Greek soprano Fanie Antonelou and German pianist Kerstin Mörk here join forces in an exciting project, entitled ‘Affinities’. In a carefully constructed sequence of 23 songs, they explore the kinship between Greek and German art songs – a varied one, filtered through friendships, family connections and teacher-pupil relationships. All the composers represented on the disc studied and/or worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the three great German-speaking musical centres – Vienna, Munich and Berlin – and include figures both well known (Schoenberg, Weill, Skalkottas and Mitropoulos) and less familiar (Emilios Riadis, Dimitrios Lialios, Ludwig Thuille). With twelve composers and even more poets involved, the subject matter of the individual songs is diverse indeed – from a café scene in Berlin (Der Abschiedsbrief by Kurt Weill in cabaret mode) to a hymn to Aphrodite, set by Dimitri Mitropoulos in a highly expressionistic free atonal idiom inspired by Schoenberg.

Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 9

Sally Matthews, Gerhild Romberger, Mark Padmore, Gerald Finley, Chor & Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Bernard Haitink

    900180 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 BR KLASSIK

A recording of Ludwig van Beethoven’s ‘Ninth’ is always a great event, especially because the symphony’s final chorus, Schiller’s ‘Ode to Joy’, is understood around the world as a plea for peace and international understanding. It was no coincidence that the catchy melody to the text ‘Joy, beautiful spark of divinity’ was chosen as the Hymn of the European Union. This recording of Beethoven’s great choral symphony under the direction of Bernard Haitink and with excellent instrumental and vocal soloists is not only an outstanding interpretation of the work but also very much an event in itself – because these recordings document Haitink’s last ever concerts with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Haitink’s decision marks the end of a conducting career spanning 65 years. He has been a regular and highly welcome guest of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, and numerous CDs on the BR-KLASSIK label document the exceptional quality of this creative collaboration.

    Dmitri Shostakovich Symphonie No. 10

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Mariss Jansons

    900185 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 BR KLASSIK

Mariss Jansons considers Dmitri Shostakovich to be one of the most serious and sincere composers ever, and finds the fifteen symphonies in particular to be deeply moving and captivating. He sees their music as bearing shattering testimony to a traumatic era of political darkness, while remaining a timeless expression of existential human feeling and experience. Over a period of seventeen years, Mariss Jansons has recorded all the Shostakovich symphonies, on each occasion together with the orchestra he was artistically associated with at the time. Six of the performances were with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. In 2006 the cycle was completed in time for the centenary of the composer’s birth. The performance of the Thirteenth Symphony was awarded a Grammy in the ‘Best Orchestral Performance’ category.

Fuoco di gioia’ – at the beginning of Verdi’s Otello, the compatriots of the victorious protagonist cheer his triumphant return to his home port with a vocal ‘fire of joy’. The opera quote is also the title of this new CD recently recorded by the Bavarian Radio Chorus, together with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester under its chief conductor Ivan Repušić. The opera chorus from “Otello” begins this selection of famous choruses and instrumental pieces from stage works of Italian belcanto (Verdi), Italian verismo (Leoncavallo, Puccini, Mascagni), Russian opera (Borodin, Glinka, Tchaikovsky), and the romantic operas of Richard Wagner. These very recent recordings from January, February and July 2019 contain well-known and enjoyable melodies that are perfect for singing along to (secretly or otherwise)!

The Cathedral Singers of Christ Church Oxford, David Bannister, The Restoration Consort, James Morley Potter

    CR052 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CONVIVIUM RECORDS

Priest, architect and composer Henry Aldrich was a key figure in the musical life of seventeenth- century Oxford. A recording of his choral music, with its wide range of influences from Byrd to Purcell, is presented here by one of the choirs of the college of which he was Dean: Christ Church, Oxford. “This striking survey of music by Henry Aldrich reveals him to be a significant figure in 17th-century English musical life, with a characterful compositional voice. The Cathedral Singers of Christ Church bring this neglected music back to life in great style, with energy and commitment.” - Dr Stephen Darlington MBE

Antje Weithaas, Maximilian Hornung, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Andrew Manze

    555172-2 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CPO

Antje Weithaas probes every detail in the musical text, charged with energy and with her compelling musical intelligence and unrivaled command of technique. Her charisma and stage presence are gripping but never force their way in front of the work. And we therefore are happy that this internationally top-ranking violinist is now interpreting the Violin Concerto by Robert Schumann and the Double Concerto by Johannes Brahms for cpo with Maximilian Hornung, a cellist who in every way is her equal. And they perform these works with the NDR Radio Philharmonic under the genial leadership of its principal conductor Andrew Manze, who has just renewed his contract with this orchestra through 2023. This recording brings together three great musicians and two composers who enjoyed the closest of relationships. Both works were written for the outstanding violinist Joseph Joachim, who played a central role for Schumann as well as for Brahms.

    Rodolphe Kreutzer Violin Concertos 1, 6 & 7

Laurent Albrecht Breuninger, Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim, Timo Handschuh

    555206-2 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CPO

Ten years after the release of the first CD featuring violin concertos by Rodolphe Kreutzer, CPO now releases his Concertos Nos. 1, 6, and 7, again in interpretations by Laurent Albrecht Breuninger. Even today Kreutzer continues to be ranked with the great violin virtuosos of his time and along with Viotti, Rode, and Baillot is regarded as a central figure of the French violin school. As FonoForum wrote of Vol. 1 in 2011, Breuninger ‘does outstanding justice to the virtuosic demands. He adds brilliant polish to his solos, absolutely in a manner reminiscent of Paganini’. Kreutzer wrote his nineteen violin concertos during his active years as a virtuoso. After he had found it necessary to abandon his solo career in 1810, he did not compose a single other such work. Although the concertos adhere to the traditional three-movement design, they contain numerous innovative elements, formal surprises, motivic-thematic interdependencies, and genial ideas.

    555286-2 £18.00 2 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 CPO

The Concerto Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s most renowned Baroque ensemble and one of the most innovative such formations worldwide. Its trademarks are its unusual program combinations featuring Scandinavian rarities and famous Baroque masterpieces. This world-class orchestra now turns to Handel’s great Brockes-Passion in a CD recording based on the Halle edition of this composer’s works. The Passion text published by the well-to-do Hamburg resident Barthold Heinrich Brockes was a literary bestseller during the early eighteenth century. Composers set his poetic text, the first to add narrative elements to the Biblical Passion texts, more than thirty times.Today the best-known of these compositions is the one by George Frideric Handel, who set these verses to music in 1716, creating what would remain his only sacred work in German. Stylistically, however, the Brockes-Passion prefers to follow Italian models and speaks a musical language resembling that of the Baroque opera.

Kristina Hellgren, Anna Grevelilus, Conny Thimander, Jakob Högström, Musica Vitae, Ensemble SYD, Daniel Hansson

    999286-2 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CPO

Ever since I began my work as a producer with cpo, I’ve wanted to release Allan Pettersson’s cantata Vox humana from 1974 as part of our edition of his works. However, we could not find the right Swedish soloists and a Swedish choir for the job. Now we’ve finally found the ensembles we wanted and can release this magnificent work on cpo. Vocal works occupy a relatively modest place in Pettersson’s oeuvre; after the composition of the Barfotasånger from 1943 to 1945, almost thirty years passed before he again decided to write a work for the human voice. In 1973/74 he wrote his twelfth symphony based on texts from Pablo Neruda’s Canto general and immediately thereafter, in 1974, the three-part cantata Vox humana, which is also often termed a song cycle and likewise is based exclusively on South American texts. And as a bonus the CD also contains Pettersson’s Six Early Songs for Middle Voice and Piano, here in a special arrangement by Staffan Storm for string orchestra and harp from 2016.

Jacques Offenbach Le Royaume de Neptune; Musique symphonique et ballets d’Orphée aux Enfers

    Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Howard Griffiths

    555301-2 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CPO

On his recently released Offenbach CD featuring some of this composer’s unknown overtures, ‘Howard Griffiths is able to generate sparkling moments, dramatic buildups of suspense, highly expressive lyrical designs, and frequently suddenly occurring shifts of mood with absolutely outstanding success’ (klassik-heute.com). And the latest Offenbach interpretation by Griffiths also does perfect justice to this composer’s highly effectively instrumented and melodically very appealing music while transmitting infectious zest for life. Orphée aux Enfers was Offenbach’s first international success and perhaps his most performed opera throughout the world – a landmark establishing a new genre known as the »Offenbachiade« and standing for societal satire in the form of music theater. The present CD offers the essence of the orchestral numbers and ballet inserts composed for the version of Orpheus in the Underworld from 1874. The rediscovery of the magnificent ballet L’Atlantide or Le Royaume de Neptune (The Realm of Neptune) and its recording premiere on this CD qualify as nothing short of sensational.

    Julius Röntgen Piano Concertos 3, 6 & 7

Oliver Triendl, Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Hermann Bäumer

    555055-2 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CPO

Our second CD featuring piano concertos by Julius Röntgen presents impressive Romantic music by this composer who was also an outstanding pianist and often interpreted his own compositions. His Piano Concerto No.3 of 1887-88, by way of exception in four movements, is more reminiscent of Brahms and not at all of the New German School of Liszt adherents. In December 1929 Röntgen began composing his last two piano concertos, both of which are heard on this CD. His Concerto No. 6 has one movement and lasts a mere fifteen minutes. The theme consists of repeated gentle wavy motion that recurs at the beginning, in the middle, with the cadenza, and at the end and reflects the bitonality so diligently practiced by Willem Pijper and Paul Hindemith, two composers whom Röntgen held in admiration. His Concerto No. 7, his last such work, has three distinct movements and an ABA structure that would enable it to stand alone. It is Röntgen’s posthumous triumph that his two last concertos have never disappeared from the repertoire and have continued to be regularly performed together.

Fritz Volbach Symphony, Op. 33; Es waren zwei Königskinder

    Sinfonieorchester Münster, Golo Berg

    777886-2 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CPO

Since 2017 Golo Berg has been the general music director of the Münster Symphony Orchestra, which was founded by the composer Fritz Volbach in 1919. It was only logical that Berg would also occupy himself with the composer around this centennial year, and Volbach turned out to be a significant personality both as a musicologist and as a composer. Berg and cpo both were surprised by the originality and high quality of these works. During the first decade of the twentieth century Volbach’s name continued to be thoroughly familiar to people who were interested in music; his works were regularly included in programs, but then they were forgotten somewhat. Volbach’s most popular works included the Symphonic Poem ‘Es waren zwei Königskinder’ based on the famous folk ballad of the same name. Like Richard Strauss in Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Volbach drew on this universally familiar material of folk character in response to the turn-of-the-century predilection for German tales and sagas.

Michael Belotti, Christian Schmitt, James David Christie

    777558-2 £20.70 3 HYBRID SACD 01/11/19 CPO

Our new complete recording of the organ works of Johann Pachelbel, the most important composer of the Southern German organ tradition, concludes with a total of three CDs – all of them once again in surround sound and with first-class organists performing on selected organs. Our three protagonists, Michael Belotti, Christian Schmitt, and James David Christie, have produced enthralling recordings on which they demonstrate their expertise in performances on various outstanding historical instruments. This final volume of our complete edition adheres to the same policy as Vols. 1 and 2: it too is based on the new collection and edition of the composer’s extant oeuvre. The order of the works on the recordings initially follows that of the chorale arrangements in the edition, which results in programs with the following thematic emphases: Passions, Psalm Settings, and Chorale Partitas. The new recording invites all listeners to rediscover the mastery and versatility of the keyboard composer Pachelbel.

Max Reger Organ Works, Vol. 6

    Gerhard Weinberger

    777539-2 £18.00 2 HYBRID SACD01/11/19 CPO

Our successful Reger edition now once again continues, and the critics continue to be more than enthusiastic about the volumes released to date. Musik & Theater has even claimed, ‘These recordings number among the best releases currently available in the field of Reger’s organ music’. And Vol. 6 again presents two SACDs in the best Surround Sound. The thirty little chorale preludes for the most familiar numbers in the Chorales op. 135a, composed by Reger expressly with the organist’s traditional duties in mind, occupy the center stage. A glance at the countless pieces of so-called practical liturgical music composed before and after Reger demonstrates that the quality of this collection can hardly be overestimated, given the fact that it offers what might be termed ‘Reger en miniature’. The wealth of the compositional ideas selected by him justifies the presentation of op. 135a in its entirety.

    Cello Concertos

Raphael Wallfisch, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Lukasz Borowicz

    555273-2 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 CPO

Significant concertos by three great composers now join the rich and multifaceted repertoire of our new series featuring »Cello Concertos by Jewish Composers in Exile.« The Cello Concerto in three movements composed by Paul Ben-Haim for Richard Katz in 1962 employs virtuosic agility and the expressive flexibility of the solo instrument and exemplarily demonstrates how Ben-Haim was able to fit the stylistic elements characteristic of the Eastern Mediterranean into the structures provided by European forms. Ernest Bloch originally wrote his Symphony for Cello and Orchestra for trombone and orchestra. The enormous size of the orchestra contributes to the exotic panorama with tone colors reminiscent of Schelomo and the other six works of the »Jewish cycle« completed by him forty years earlier. Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Cello Concerto was originally composed for Deception, but some months after this film had premiered in the cinemas, he reworked the concerto, which in its concert hall version consists of one short movement and among other things a development section featuring fully refined counterpoint and heavy percussive effects.

Following the successful CDs Hymnus and Magnificat with music by Orlando di Lasso the Singphoniker are now concluding their Lasso cycle with a recording of his complete Penitential Psalms. It was around 1559 that the Bavarian Duke Albrecht V commissioned a manuscript in which the textual, pictorial, and musical dimensions were to be combined. Orlando di Lasso was assigned the task of setting the seven Penitential Psalms, a group of texts regarded as a unit since ancient times, and rounded off this work with praise of God in the form of a motet on Psalms 148 and 150.

During his lifetime he was a famous man, at least in Germany, but today he no longer receives major notice. cpo has called attention to his rewarding oeuvre with a number of releases. What is not so well known is that Schillings completely dedicated himself to chamber music at the beginning and at the end of his career as a composer. This is expressive fin de siècle par excellence and a genuine discovery in this interpretation by the Vienna String Quintet led by its first violinist Thomas Christian!

Michaela Fukacová, John Kruse, Eugen Tichindeleanu, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Justin Brown

    6.220579 £9.00 HYBRID SACD 08/11/19 DACAPO

The music of Jesper Koch (b. 1967) is in a constant and fruitful dialogue with the past. Often melodious with tonal connotations and with a dreamlike quality that seeks to escape from reality in the cello concerto Dreamscapes, feels at home in oases of happiness and nostalgia in the violin concerto Arcadia Lost, and in the clarinet concerto Lonesome deals with different aspects of loneliness. The three concertos are presented here in world premiere recordings featuring the soloists they were written for. They in their turn share a deep connection with the Odense Symphony Orchestra, always close to the composer’s heart.

‘Our project to record all of Josquin’s Masses now runs into controversy. One of Josquin’s greatest compositions, Missa Mater Patris, is so unusual that some scholars have questioned its authorship. With Missa Da pacem these questions become more pressing. Having been thought during the 19th century to be the most typical and perfect of all Josquin’s Masses, it has recently been shown to be by the little-known Noel Bauldeweyn. Or is it?’ Peter Phillips

Antoine Brumel From Darkness Into Light: The complete Lamentations of Jeremiah for Good Friday

Musica Secreta, Deborah Roberts, Laurie Stras

    CD719 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 OBSIDIAN

Based on a major new discovery, this recording features the complete setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah for Good Friday by Antoine Brumel, one of the most celebrated composers of the Renaissance. Brumel’s Lamentations have been known, performed, and recorded for many years, but the additional seventeen verses, which were found hiding in plain sight in a sixteenth-century manuscript by Musica Secreta’s co-director Laurie Stras, reveal a monumental setting - a masterpiece brought from darkness into light. The second half of the disc focusses on another manuscript, compiled for a convent, with gems by Josquin des Prez and Loyset Compère sitting alongside the anonymous beauty of works that decorated the nuns’ worship throughout the year.

Johannes Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1; Four Ballades

    Lars Vogt, Royal Northern Sinfonia

    ODE 1330-2 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 ONDINE

Lars Vogt continues his series of concerto recordings with the Royal Northern Sinfonia with this new recording of Johannes Brahms’ (1833–1897) First Piano Concerto together with Four Ballades (Op. 10) for solo piano. As in previous albums, Lars Vogt conducts from the keyboard. The evolution of Brahms’ 1st Piano Concerto took several steps. Originally conceived to become a Sonata for Two Pianos through orchestration it was developed into a four-movement Symphony until reaching into its final form of a Piano Concerto in three movements. During the process, which lasted from 1854 to 1856, some movements were also discarded and replaced by new material. This music is packed with much drama. No wonder since these years were particularly tumultuous in Brahms’ personal life: it was during this period when his great mentor Robert Schumann was sent into an asylum and ultimately died. It was also time when Brahms formed a close, lifelong friendship to Clara Schumann. Some of these feelings might well be echoed in the peaceful 2nd movement, Adagio.

Juris Karlsons Oremus - Sacred Choral Works

Latvian Radio Choir, Sinfonietta Riga, Sigvards Klava

    ODE 1342-2 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 ONDINE

Composer Juris Karlsons (b. 1948) is one of the leading names in Latvian music today. This new album by the Latvian Radio Choir under their music director Sigvards Klava features Karlsons’ choral works. These works are marked by deeply religious feeling and profound message. Oremus is choral piece written by the composer in 2018 for the Latvian Radio Choir. It was premiered as part of the Lincoln Center White Light Festivals. When writing this work, no doubt Karlsons had specifically the sound and vocal abilities of the choir in mind. The largest work of the album is Adoratio (2010), a symphonic, singlem ovement work for choir and orchestra with a duration of over 30 minutes. Yet, this powerful work filled with drama can, like a symphony, be clearly divided into musical sections. Le lagrime dell’anima (2013) for piano and choir is based on a short poem written by the composer.

Four Elements, Vol. 2 - fire

    Yu Kosuge

    ORC100108 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 ORCHID CLASSICS

Prometheus defied the gods to steal fire and give it to humanity. The ancient titan’s priceless gift, used since for good and ill, has never lost its fascination. Yo Kosuge, praised for her immaculate technique and penetrating artistry, explores creative responses to fire in the second volume of her Four Elements project. The Berlin-based Japanese pianist’s latest Orchid Classics album moves from pieces filled with nostalgic warmth to others animated by hell’s tormenting flames. “By showing these many different aspects of fire, I want to lead the listener through different stories as told by composers, from the Romantic to contemporary periods,” comments Yu Kosuge. Four Elements: Fire is built around compositions written during the First World War, each hallmarked by harmonic daring and searing emotions. Its tracklist includes a selection of Max Reger’s sublime Träume am Kamin, fireside dreams preserved in the form of musical miniatures; Vers la flamme, among Alexander Scriabin’s final compositions and one his most intense; Debussy’s breathtaking Feux d’artifice, a pyrotechnic tour de force; and the Ritual Fire Dance from Manuel de Falla’s ballet El amor brujo.

Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Sonatas, Vol. 9 Jonathan Biss

    ORC100109 £9.00 CD 01/11/19 ORCHID CLASSICS

Jonathan Biss concludes his nine-year, nine-volume exploration of Beethoven’s piano sonatas with a recording for our times, one that asks profound questions about mankind’s fragile existence. The final album in his critically acclaimed cycle, set for release on Orchid Classics, brings together three works that each stand as the last of a group of three sonatas. The American pianist begins with a masterwork of Beethoven’s early creative period, the Sonata No.7 in D major, Op.10 No.3. Its stop-start finale, punctuated by silences, prefaces a compelling interpretation of the Sonata No.18 in E flat major, Op.31 No.3, a work that blends unsettling introspection and playful high spirits. Biss ends his Beethoven odyssey with the Sonata No.32 in C minor Op.111, the composer’s farewell to the genre.

In high demand as composer for film, television and the concert hall, Stuart Hancock has won admirers worldwide with music hallmarked by heartfelt romantic gestures, rousing tunes and opulent orchestrations. Raptures offers a compelling new survey of Hancock’s orchestral works, including world premiere recordings of his Violin Concerto, with Jack Liebeck as soloist, and two other magnificent pieces for full symphony orchestra. The Orchid Classics recording trains the spotlight on the BBC Concert Orchestra, in outstanding form at the Watford Colosseum under the direction of Levon Parikian. Conductor and musicians bring out the rich tonal colours, atmospheric impressions and inventive brilliance of Raptures, originally conceived for string quartet and transformed for this recording into a five-movement symphonic suite.

    Porgy & Bess Revisited

Nicolas Dautricourt, Pascal Schumacher, Knut Erik Sundquist

    ORC100112 £9.00 CD 15/11/19 ORCHID CLASSICS

A trio of musical adventurers and the timeless hits of George Gershwin combine to create Porgy and Bess Revisited, a rich mix of free improvisation, melodic fantasy and formal composition. This alluring album, set for release on Orchid Classics, captures the playfulness and passion, the coruscating wit and haunting sadness of Gershwin’s ‘American folk opera’, as Porgy and Bess was billed for its first outing on Broadway in 1935-36. Porgy and Bess Revisited unites three contrasting artistic personalities, the debonair double-bassist Knut Erik Sundquist, the phlegmatic vibraphone virtuoso and composer Pascal Schumacher and the flamboyant violinist Nicolas Dautricourt. Like Gershwin, they vault the boundary walls of convention to produce music suffused with the rhythms and life of jazz, the elegance of classical form, the irresistibility of popular song and the pathos of folk art.

After J. S. Bach’s solo cello suites in the early 18th century, the genre experienced a fallow period until Zoltán Kodály set the pace with a monumental sonata for solo cello in 1915. It inspired a variety of similar works, but Kodaly’s 30-minute sonata still stands ‘like Mount Everest’, to quote Daniel Müller-Schott, the soloist on this recording. His programme also includes music by Prokofiev, Hindemith, Henze, Crumb and Casals, and features a work of his own for the first time: Cadenza continues the tradition of compositions that other cellists have always added to their recital programmes. “Here, you can recognise influences of the solo works that have influenced me over the years. In Cadenza, the contrasting elements of the world of my instrument appear in the closest space – the cello in pure lyricism, just as sequences catapulting themselves into the highest registers in rhythmical savagery and immediately concluding the movement after a final culmination.” (Daniel Müller-Schott)

Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782–1871) was long considered one of the most typically French and most successful opera composers of the 19th century; his overtures were once favourites of the light classical repertoire. This opéra français, first performed on 3 May 1825, relates to the venerable tradition of the rescue opera, which had been in fashion since the French Revolution. Its libretto and score were equally successful. The opera represents a decisive development in Auber’s style, a turning away from imitation of Rossini in favour of Boieldieu’s simplicity, and thereby to a specifically French tradition. It was the first of Auber’s mature opéra-comiques that went on to be an international success, characterised by Italianate sparkle with French grace and lyricism. The work remained in the repertoire from 1825 to 1896 and received 525 performances. By the 1850s it had been translated into German, Danish, Swedish, Polish, Czech and Hungarian. On German stages the opera remained one of Auber’s most popular works, and it was performed as late as 1950 in Vienna.
