In November of 2011, the former First Lady of Chicago,Maggie Daley died at age of 68 after a nine-year battlewith breast cancer. Mrs. Daley, the wife of former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley was a gracious promoter of the city’s cultural and educational programs. It was our privilege in 2006to register a new variety of pink lily fl owering tulip, tulipa ‘Maggie Daley’, in honor of what Maggie andthe Daley’s have done not only for the city but for theentire horticultural industry. She was the fi rst UnitedStates Mayor’s wife to receive this distinction. During the 2011 Naming Presentation of the new tulipspecies, Mrs. Daley told the audience of 150 friends,business leaders and associates that she had carried a“huge bouquet of tulips” on her wedding day.It was only fi tting that on the day she was laid to rest;one by one, members of her family placed tulips on her casket. I think that we at DeVroomen speak for all of the green industry in saying, thank you and you will be missed.

PLANTING TIPS

When to plant:Spring fl owering bulbs must be planted in the fall to develop aroot system before heavy frost sets in. It’s good to wait until soil temperatures are below 60 F. Most of the spring fl owering bulbsrequire a period of winter cold for the best results in the spring.

Planting:- Good drainage is essential for good results- The PH should be between 6.0 and 7.0- Most bulbs do good in areas that do not receivedirect sun light during the afternoon, but they will tolerate the sun.- Early fl owering bulbs are great to be inter-plantedin a perennial border- Various bulbs can be inter-planted together for alonger fl owering period.

Soil Preparation:The planting area may not need much preparationbut it can make planting easier. Improving drainage and by adding bulb food, you can improve the fl owering results. We suggest ‘Holland SupremeBulb Food’.

Excavate the planting area to the depth requiredand loosen up the bottom a little. Mix the bulb foodin (a handful per square foot) and, if the soil is lowon organic matter, add compost, peat or pine bark.For better drainage you can also add some topsoil.

Place the bulbs evenly in the planting area and cover the bulbs with the removed soil. Water thoroughly and fi nish withcovering the area with 2-3 inches of mulch.Mulch will keep moisture in and will also protect the bulbs from harshwinter conditions.If the fall season is dry you might want to water the area as needed.
