A lways finish what you start, is what the saying goes. I disagree. Home-making is the so-called work-in-progress, isnt it? Always adding, removing or updating things to create your latest little triumph. Then theres the make-over project which requires a little

planning and certainly no small feat. The overly-ambitious mind can conjure many ideas to convert a space from dull to wow.

Things do get interesting and creatively so when faced with rigid parameters such as limited budget and space. To solve the latter, in comes the art of space manipulation or space-faking.

The key to space-faking is best approached with precision, bordering on obsessive, attention to detail, coupled with a burning desire to use every conceivable nook and awkward cranny for storage. No opportunity is overlooked.

For studio and soho unit dwellers, beds can be lifted up and

    house proud

mirrors subtly angled to accommodate sneaky shelving behind or underneath them. Even the stairs can reveal storage beneath their treads. Other areas liberated can be potentials for the inclusion of en-suite dressing rooms, vanity sinks and designer loos with no compromise on style or comfort. So, rule one: avail yourself of every millimetre of potential storage space in order to release room for more rooms!

In this issue, we are thrilled to present you with inspiring homes to fit small spaces or to complement a growing artifact collection. Each is immaculately conceived to fulfill dreams and lifestyle choices.

Let your home be a testament to your creativity and an extension to your personal style. Your quest for a beautiful home starts here.

The 2012 Salone del Mobile of Milan recently saw the twocelebrated Italian brandscollaborating once againwith their presentation of LACUCINA ALESSI by Valcucine.

This is Italian savoir faire at its best, which combines deep-rooted craftsmanship with new technological expertise typical of cutting-edgemanufacturers: Alessi and Valcucine. embodiment of this. The new LaCucinaAlessi by Valcucine contract project by the Dutch architect Wiel Arets is an all-in-one unit in Corian Glacier White with rounded edges and corners, distinctive for the complete absence of visible joints and the experience of roundness, no sharp edges philosophy.

LACUCINAALESSI by Valcucine, designed by Wiel Arets.

It comes in three designs: an island, an island with two additional columns, and a wall version, which can be alteredand personalised to fit customisationrequirements. For an elegant finish, a tap is also designed by Wiel Arets andproduced by the Finnish Oras.

The typical features of Wiel Aretss design approach are firmly in evidenceas explained by Alberto Alessi, ... the tendency for the parts to be regular, without however being minimalist in a reductive sense, the inclusion of a highlevel of intellectual complexity, but alsotangibility and formal simplicity, enable him to produce extremely refined results.

THE GIRAFFE Did you know that this 2m long necked, even toed angulated African mammal got its name from its camel-like face and those spots, similar to the leopards? They can be hues of orange, chestnut brown or almost black on light cream coat. They thrive well in the savannas, grasslands and woodlands where acacia trees are plenty and the leaves are tasty to the giraffes. To keep cool, those tiny horns on their heads are highly vascular. Exploiting their forte, design firm Ide Etcetera, boldly enters into a new phase in their line of work, breaking new grounds and opening up a whole new way of living. Spearheading the team in the increasingly popular and expanding industry of Soho Living, is tCreative Director of Ide Etcetera, Chris Cheng.

Increasingly so, home-owners look to interior design as a creative means to tailor make their abodes. Yet more than just a pretty interior, they desire for a creative source that is able to interpret that which is uniquely them and translate it into a space that is ideally theirs. Understanding the basis of home-owners needs and desires, Ide Etcetera is more than a design firm. They are an innovative think tank that combines mastery of design with finesse in execution to realize the dreams and desires of their clients.

So what is the fundamental that drive their creative success? Mood and technique as Creative Director, Chris Cheng will tell you, These two factors in varying depth span a width of ambience

Left to Right:A worded map of the world for the travel-loving photographer.

that is original and unparalleled in the clients living and work space.

Attesting to this is one of their many design projects, Lux Dream Studio a Soho unit that is both home and workplace to an international photographer. Across the rooms, a varied combination of elements such as timbre flooring, industrial scaffolding, grey bricked wall and polished white tiles were used. Applied in varying depths, the spatiality of the Soho unit exudes artistic professionalism befitting of its home-owner and comfortable relaxation of a home.

Intrinsic to the homes interior design are the artful touches of personalization. In reminiscence of the home-owners love for the boating lifestyle, the home spots pothole-inspired windows that stimulate the yacht experience. Beautiful portraits and furnishings of aesthetic drama such as the London street lamp ceiling light in the kitchen reflect and embody the creative nature of the owner.

Just as creativity is never orthodox, neither is engineering. When combined and executed concisely, only great work

of finesse results. Taking things up a notch, Ide Etcetera

went through a thorough and expensive research to find a space-saving alternative that will allow for the maximum exploitation of the units height a luxurious 4.5 metres of it. Using furniture reinforced with steel, they act not only as storage areas but also as the walls of the unit, giving both structural support and spatial division. What was originally a 1 200 square feet unit expanded to some 2 000 square feet, adding the luxury of space to that of height.

Equipped with extensive creativity, expressive ideas and excellent engineering, Ide Etcetera takes the world of design and Soho Living by storm.

a breath a of lifeffDesign in the world of healthcare.

I t is known that design is not justabout aesthetics. It is also aboutfunctionality which has really taken root and blossomed over the 19th Century. Today as modernismsoars, the designing world is boldlytaking the concept of practicality and relevance into new territories.

Recalling the insightful words of worldrenowned architect Walter Gropius in his address on the direction and role of architecture and design, he said thatthey must necessarily be a creative effort to integrate simultaneously design,

construction and economy of any giventask with its social end. In other words, design must be the harmonious point of marriage between spatial dimensions and purpose, spatial aesthetics and function.

At the helm of this push and anexpert of the trait, one of the longest serving Interior Design Consultancies inSingapore, Davenport Campbell, strives with resounding innovation. The key to their success lies in their foresightand clarity in integrating design with its social end. Since the inception of its parent company in Sydney, Australia in 1977, Davenport Campbell has alwayssought to deliver a range of solutions that satisfy user demands, investment criteria, marketplace trends and environmental concerns.

Abiding in their clear aim, their local

operation which was established in 1982, has since conquered new grounds.Traditionally providing design for specialist corporate office, they have adapted their expertise into the healthcare industry.Amongst their many successful projects isthe East Shore Hospital.

Identifying the growing importance of preventative care versus sickness care,Davenport Campbell played a crucialrole in injecting new life into this ever-evolving industry. Gone are the days when hospitals are sterile places of bleak hope and morbidity. Resurrecting East Shore with a fresh sense of hope and recovery, the hospital takes on a new attitude and drive as an all-inclusive wellness centre.

Its open-ended lay-out with a cleanand sophisticated design is not only

vulnerability and perplexity. Behind itsseemingly simple and random construct, lies a rigorous experimentation that strips it down to its post-painterly technicalities. In creating this rainbow decadence,Davenport reveals, I control liquid, I usecolour, and I try to choreograph thesedifferent elements together. There is alot of internal rigour to the process butat the same time it is about chance. Theresulting collection, void of doctrineand geometrical form, is a purely visual experience that explores the physical and psychological relationships betweenviewer and his visual culture.

Born in Sidcup, London in 1966,Davenport studied art at NorthwichCollege of Art and Design in Chesire before going to Goldsmiths College from where he graduated in 1988. Since then, he has built an amazing portfolio of artworks including a 13-metre mural forthe Tate Triennial in 2003 and a 48-metre long painting for Southwark Council and Land Securities in 2006. His works canbe found in many important collectionsworldwide such as the Daimler ChryslerCollection in Stuttgart and the Weltkunst Collection in Zurich.

Situated along Siglap Road, The Flamingo holds within its compound a unique combination of apartment types, specifically the cosy studio apartments and the spacious three-bedroom apartments. Entrusting the interiors to Victor Ng & Kelvin Gan, designers of Elements ID, they are transformed into a visual fanfare of characteristic elegance.

Across both studio and three-bedroom apartments, the interiors stand as testimony of their design mastery. Current yet distinct, every space at every level of

aestheticism is as sensitively conjured as it is luxuriously endowed. Whether it is for a family of four, newly-weds or bachelors, his design calls to mind stylish living and inspires tasteful individuality that is rightly appropriated for all.

Entering the home space of the three-bedroom apartment, its contemporary appeal is tangible. Artfully blending textures and colours, each room carries its own flavour without compromising on the cohesive identity of the home. Embodying this in its entirety is the living room. With boldness, the studio apartment challenges the basic conceptions of home space. In bagging convention, this room takes centre stage. A wonderful addition for the bachelor or newly-wed, the small but highly functional kitchen transforms the room into a multi-faceted living space. Thoughtful design makes greasy odours and cumbersome cleaning the least of your worries. Ensuring only the aroma of delicious food wafts through the space, a small but strong ventilation hood is built directly above the hot plate stove. At the same time, simple but classy tiled flooring renders cleaning a breeze.

A true reflection of the urban lifestyle, Kelvins design of the interiors is all about smart space planning and creative radicalism. Urban, current and tasteful, both apartments celebrate individuality without compromising on cohesion, independence without neglecting the familial.

Sometimes urban living can be tough and high strung. Surrounded by carefully pruned shrubbery and cold architecture, the thirst for a space of quietude and rest can be great. With great sensitivity and a keen sense of design, the team at Image Creative Design conjured an interior space that emulates soothing ambiance and fluid appeal.

Sitting genteel-like, the unassuming attitude of the living room is at once unobtrusive and uplifting. Creamed in a neutral palette, its soft tone is in full complements with the wood panelled feature wall. Used in combination, the spatiality exudes warm invitation that immediately sets you at ease with it. As you settle in and unwind with a spot of TV entertainment, soft furnishings in off-white rise to greet you in plush comforts.

Yet for all the tranquil rest that the natural textures and cosy tonality of the interior inspires, it does not neglect class. Reflecting contemporary tempo are the coffee table and bespoke TV wall. Their mirror surfaces not only brightens the room by lending accentuation to its lighting but also gives it a chic, polished finishing.

By contrast, the kitchen space entices communal fun. With modern flair, it adapts an open concept that unites the

Uniquely U-shaped, its spatial layout involves every occupant within it, facilitating and encouraging an all-rounded and inclusive fellowship.

Enter the private enclave of the master bedroom and you are immediately embraced in quiet elegance. On a simple palette of crme white, accentuations in rich black give the room classy definition and appropriates the right mood. Where a black velvet headboard with leaf

motif punctuates the bedroom with grandeur, a black timbered ceiling lends sophistication to the study area. Dividing the space with design intelligence is the bespoke floor to ceiling display shelf. Its artful combination of open and concealed shelving retains the flavour of intimacy whilst allowing for tasteful indulgence of show-and-tell.

From room to room, the design flows with refine aestheticism and stands as a testimony of Image Creative Designs Midas touch of creativity. With acute sensitivity to spatial niche, the team innovatively reinterprets home-owners needs to bring them inspiring home interiors that refreshes and rejuvenates at every turn.

I n designing the interiors of aresidence, beautiful aesthetics will only form a shell of a home. To fillthe residential perimeter with thesucculence of sweet fruits, meaningful aesthetics is required. Home to the Loh family, this three storey semi-detach house at Li Hwan Drive is a hallmark of just such contemporary constancy andmeaningful beauty.

Designed by Constance Ann, Founderand Principal Designer of ConstannDesign since 1988, its interior andarchitecture is imbued with minimalistic appeal. Not however, without a pertinent undercurrent of cohesiveness and harmony speaks not just of aesthetic know-how but also spatial sensitivity thatcan only come with years of experienceand refined expertise. Key to this is theuse of glass panels to fill the frames of the staircase which gives this living space a sense of mellifluous openness. It also lifts the weighted bulk of the staircase andcreates the illusion of depth.

A vision of sophisticated simplicity, the interior is inviting and warm. Wherewhite and minimalism make for austereaesthetics, Constance weaved brown tones and black accentuations. An interesting visual of texture, the browngrains of the laminated televisionwall livens the white palette in bold punctuation. Paired with plush whitesofas, the living room gently embraces you in homely comfort. Expressingthe same communal tone, a tastefulcombination of rich brown table and black leather chairs anchors the diningarea in subtle elegance.

A space of working inspiration, the study room is not only airy with its vast balcony doors but also conducive with its unobstructed view of the neighbourhoods skyline.

Even the kitchen space is an expression of the family as a communal body. This is where Mrs. Loh spends most of her time and as she preparesmeals for the family, they like to gather incasual fellowship, says Constance. Keenly attuned to the familys needs, the island table not only provides extra storage butalso facilitates familial interactions.

While cooking meals keeps the heartof the family warm and the belliessatisfied, cleaning can be a chore and ridding the interiors of the home of greasy odours a bigger headache. With

much design sensitivity, Constance applied a dry-wet concept to the layout of the kitchen, keeping the area forwhat she termed greasy cooking on theoutskirts of the home.

Epitomizing the homes deep sense of wellness and quiet soulfulness, a luxurious air-well runs through the coreof the home. Tastefully adorned with textured tiles that mimics a brick wall, itsa natural visage that finds complementsin every weather. Yet more than just anextravagance, the air-well provides air circulation and allows natural light to

stream into the rooms and the landingarea, keeping the entire interior bright and airy. From every room, at every floor and in every weather, the natural visage of the air-well can be enjoyed.

Tranquil luxury draws you into its bosom as you move into the private enclave of the home. Veneered woodflooring makes for a cosy spread whilst bespoke cabinetry accentuates the living space with class and appropriate moods. Evoking romantic grandeur in the masterbedroom is a shimmery grey wallpaper feature with floral motifs. The study area,

A home space that effectivelyappeals across generations and works for their diverseneeds is sensitively conjured and tastefully created. Seated in theheartland of Kovan, one such home embodies this very essence of spatialityand design. Actualized by Alvin Low,Design Director of Beaux Monde, itsinteriors are a beauteous balance of aesthetics and functionality.

In approaching Alvin, home-owner MrsLilian Sim had but one design aspiration,

I wanted an abode that was beautiful without losing the essence of home. Thereisnt a purpose in creating a house that has the stylish standards and function of a showroom, and none of the comforts orconvenience of homely living. Housing three generations under its vast roof, the home is indeed classy yet cosy, modernyet warm, beautiful yet practical. The keyto its aesthetic effect? Less is more, pipedboth Lilian and Alvin in unison.

The minimalist appeal throughoutthe home is undeniable. Entering the living room, an unobtrusive fluidity

Lending classy punctuation is a modern chandelier hanging over the dining table.

A clever system of cabinetry ensures that everything is within easy reach.

and modesty of space greet the eyes. Crucial to this design experience are the glass panels that form the frame of thestaircase and a portion of the wall. Its clear surface not only creates a visual andspatial connectivity from living to diningarea but also facilitates the flow of natural light in and throughout the entire space.

Contributing to the elegant simplicityof the design are earth-tone hues. Theoutdoor patios are bold reflections of relaxation with their timbre floorboards and rich dark brown furnishings. Theindoor space on the other hand, isa softer visage of crme, whites and

cappuccino brown. Of the colour choices,Lilian explained, We really wanted acosy ambience for the home. One that is evergreen and brings the tranquillity of the outdoors in. Melding the two spacestogether, timbre-like adaptations aremade to its interiors through furnishings that are of the same dark shades of brown as the patio furniture. Unique to this design adaptation are the windows.Specially coated in a medium brown, they complete the woody textuality of thisinterior design.

Spaciousness and its utility are both aluxury and convenience within the house

of Sims. For the young triplets, whether they are running out in the front yard or enjoying their toys in the playroom, it presents to them an imaginarium of adventure and endless fun. For the elderly, the uncluttered space allows forease of movement. Epitomizing this is their bathroom, deliberately expanded to meet their elderly needs. For Lilian and her husband, the vast space is a blessing for the luxurious functionalitythat it provides for all. When asked whatwas their favourite spatial feature of the home, Lilian replied cheerily, Myhusband loves the outdoors. I often find

Lori says. Indeed, across the spatiality of the home, the design is clutter-free. Morethan just a visage of elegance, its healthy balance of clean lines and unobtrusive curves create a deep sense of fluidityand openness. Applied in the homescommunal spaces, the living, dining andbar areas are made perfect for socialgatherings of any kind.

Also about balance, Lori tells us, The design direction with the Hollywood Hills home [is based on] the yin and the yang sleek architecture blended withreclaimed materials. Using only greenmaterials such as bar-all FSC certifiedwood, stone and organic fabrics, theinterior is transformed into an earthycollage of cosiness and class. A favouritefeature of Loris is the reclaimed white oak panelling on the tall columns throughoutthe house. It really softens all of the glassand stone, Lori gushes. Just as luxurious as its leather counterparts, the green furniture with their organic fabrics and non-toxic adhesives lend contemporarycharm to the interiors.

Green living doesnt mean that onemust necessarily become archaic though falling back on the basics is essential. I call this project the Flintstones meet

the Jeffersons, Lori enthuses, It makes everyone smile. Whilst the natural materiality of the furnishings make cleaning and maintenance a simpleand toxic-free affair, state-of-the art technology sets energy consumption atan eco-conscious capacity. Installed with a complete earth-friendly system of solar power, smart home technology, radiant heating and water filtration, this Hollywood Hills home is as savvy as it is stylish.

Though an expert on luxury lifestyle,Lori holds firmly that Green lifestyle isnot accessible only to the rich, Greeninteriors may be had by all. The first thing I do is shop at home and clear out clutter. Anyone on any budget can do these things. Reflecting on its role and development, she points out that it is essentially about personal choices, As awareness grows, and it is growing, more and more people will want healthy personal and global environments.Cleaning the home with non-toxic products (e.g. white vinegar) is a huge green step, as opposed to introducing harsh chemicals into an environment daily or weekly.
