For holding a demonstration at the Pass Office against the issuing of passes to African women.

The Government has started issuing passes to women in Johan­nesburg. Employers are to see that their women servants carry passes.

NO LAW COMPELS AN AFRICAN WOMAN TO HAVE A PASS.

But if women meekly accept this badge of slavery the day will soon be here when every African woman will have to have a pass.WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU

Do you know why people are driven from the towns, made to do forced labour on the farms, taken from their families? Because of pass laws.

Do you know why fathers, husband and sons disappear, never to be traced? Through the pass laws.

Do you know why homes are raided in the middle of the night? Through the pass laws.

THIS IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO WOMEN, TOO . . . .Who will feed your baby when you have been arrested in the street and thrown in the pick-up?What will happen to YOU when the police can stop you at any hour, day or night, and ask you: “Waar is jou pas, kaffirmeid?”"

20,000 women told the Prime Minister in Pretoria in 1956: “WE WOMEN DON’T WANT PASSES!” Women have demonstrated all over South Africa, in towns, big and small, and in country districts, against the passes. Women of Zeerust and Lichtenburg went to gaol rather than take the pass.

WHAT DOES "REGISTRATION” REALLY MEAN ?It means that your domestic servant will be issued with a £ASS !

TO YOU her pass will mean .............................that she may be arrested at ANY TIME : If you are a working mother and leave your children in her care, you may go home to find her arrested and your children left alone and uncared for.

TO HER that pass will mean ...........................that she may be exposed as a woman to indignity and humiliation at the hands of pass searching policemen; that she may be sent away to a farm to labour in the fields; that her WHOLE LIFE WILL BE LIVED IN PEAR OF ARREST, of being torn from her home and children.
