Plaaslike hengelaars wat die voorval sien gebeur het, het Trauernicht te hulp gesnel en die krokkodil met stokke en klippe aangeval om dit af te skrik.

Hulle het daarin geslaag om die slagoffer uit die krokkodil se greep te red.

Jaco Gericke, plaaslike paramedikus sê: “Ons het die oproep teen 12:19 ontvang.

Die vrou het ernstige bytwonde aan haar regterarm en lyf gehad. Ons het haar na die plaaslike staatshospitaal geneem vir behandeling waarna sy na Polokwane oorgeplaas is.”

Trauernicht en haar gesin het na bewering ‘n uitstappie geniet na die brug waar hul naby die water gesit en visgevang het.

Volgens ooggetuies het die krokodil die vrou van die oewer af gegryp.

“Die plaaslike hengelaars was die helde, hulle optrede het beslis die vrou se lewe gered” het Gericke bygevoeg na afl oop van

die gebeure. “Ons is ook dankbaar vir die bystand van

“Ons wil vasstel of daar genoeg water is en afl ope vir die dier om weg te beweeg van bedreigings” het van den Berg gesê.

“Ons glo dat die krokodil maar net die geleentheid gesien het vir maklike kos en toe sy fout agter gekom het. Mense moet ook verstaan dat dit ‘n natuurlike rivier is en dat krokodille natuurlik daar voorkom.” het van den Berg bygevoeg.

Die publiek word gewaarsku om versigtig te wees wanneer hulle naby waterpoele en riviere beweeg.

Die plaaslike riviere word bewoon deur krokodille en ander gevaarlike diere en die publiek word gemaan om verantwoordelik op te tree en nie hulself onnodig in gevaar te stel nie.

Phalaborwa Home and Property owners will be taking the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality to court. This comes as the new year saw still no response from the town council on the requests of residents to remedy the radical increase in property rates and taxes for residents of the town.

The group of residents, under leadership of Manie Kriel, chairman of the local business chamber will come together next week for a meeting to report back on what should be done next. No offi cial from any of levels of government that was contacted about the dire situation in Phalaborwa has made any effort to reply to the town’s cries for

assistance. “We have no choice but to go to court” says Manie Kriel. Following the recent social media commotion with slogans like #feesmustfall and #zumamustfall, the residents of Phalaborwa are now adding their own voices with #thismunicipalitymustfall, challenging the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality to remedy the situation as residents have had enough of footing the bill for municipal workers’ lavish lifestyles.

Residents are urged to attend the meeting that will be held at Laerskool Phalaborwa on Tuesday, January 26 at 18:00.

A municipal drain left unattended for over four years has turned into a living Hell for Zone 14 residents, staff, learners and feeding scheme volunteers at Namakgale Primary School.

South African National Civic Organization Namakgale branch member, Sammkie Mokhodu says residents are extremely furious with the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s intentional neglect on maintaining what they have since termed “I sleep with my nose covered with “musk”.

“We are no longer enjoying the comfort of our homes let alone the delicious food we

are preparing for our families. Phalaborwa is extremely hot, but we are forced to stay indoors as the smell emanating from this drain is unbearable. Our senior citizens are always admitted at the local Hospital and clinics are their daily destinations as their lungs cannot tolerate this smell,” remarked a fuming Mokhodu.

Mokhodu added that they reported the matter to Ward 4 councillor, Rose Popela many times, but the situation keeps on getting worse as none from the municipal technical services bothered to maintain it.

Another resident nearby the school said her ten years old son and her teenage friends last week Wednesday came home smelling

like rotten potatoes and when she asked what happened to them, they cited having been playing soccer on the school’s soccer fi eld.

“We are certain that the Municipality is waiting for one of our children to die while playing inside the stream before

that dam of raw waste can be maintained. We are aware that we will be called sell-

outs after exposing this issue, but the honest truth is that we have been patient for a very long time and can no longer tolerate this incompetency,” noted an angry mother.

Our journalist found the school’s feeding scheme volunteers busy preparing a meal for learners last week Friday around 08:30 in the midst of the awful smell.

“Our noses are already used to this appalling smell, but there is nothing we can do as we have to prepare meals for learners in this area. We are not health practitioners, but our little knowledge tells us that whoever is responsible for health matters and sewerages won’t be pleased if his or her children were subjected to eat meals cooked nearby this dreadful smell,” said one of the volunteers.

The school Principal, Nel Monyela said his countless efforts to engage the Municipality proved fruitless as none came to resolve this debacle.

Just before our journalist, Mokhodu and another resident could leave the school around 08:45, cattle were busy drinking water in the overfl owing waste dam.

“These cattle are here daily and after

eating our mangos, they headed straight to the stream to relieve their thirst. These are the same cattle we consume their meat at funerals and other community gatherings,” said one of the mother citing many mosquitoes during the day and at night while her health has been hugely affected as she has since developed sinus due to the stream.

The mother further said what used to be a tar road in their street is now a ticking bomb as speeding motorists at night might crash into their homes as the potholes are as big as Letaba River.

Ward Councillor, Rose Popela on Monday said the drain was never reported to her, but as soon as she is done with a council meeting she will head straight to the site.

“Many of those drains including the one you are referring to are aged and we are still waiting for Mopani District Municipality to allocate funds so that new and bigger pipes could be installed. I was informed about the leaking water pipe and it will be repaired as a matter of urgency,” explained Popela.

Both Municipal spokesperson, Jonas Mahesu and Acting Municipal Manager, Maite Moakamela handn’t responded to our questions at the time of going to print.

Two Phalaborwa residents, Mary Grobler and Clair Lubbe started the Santa Paws Box Campaign last year, which collects and distributes pet food, toys, blankets and other much needed items for shelter animals at the SPCA.

On December 21, they arrived at the Phalaborwa SPCA with boxes of treats, toys and a good pile of basics.

From kittens to cows, if there is an animial in need, the SPCA is the one to respond.

The Phalaborwa SPCA staff and management have a tough job.

With scant funding, minimum staff members and vehicles, they see to the welfare of animals across Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit and Gravelotte.

That is what makes this project so remarkable.The SPCA would like to thank all those who donated

boxes and opened their hearts to the fur kids at the Phalaborwa SPCA.

In future the Santa Paws Campaign will be an annual campaign starting in November and ending mid December to bring good will to those in cages through no fault of their own

Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality will experience a water supply shortage on January 27 due to planned maintenance which will be carried out by the water authority, Lepelle Northern Water.

The maintenance will be carried out from 06:00 for a 12 hour period and as a result, potable water supply to Ba-Phalaborwa consumers will be affected for the aforementioned period.

Residents are advised to use water sparingly and switch off geysers as they may be damaged due to the water shortage.

Former ANC Limpopo Provincial Secretary and current Provincial Legislature member, Molapi Soviet Lekganyane led the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s back to school campaign last week.

On Wednesday, Lekganyane and BPM Chief Whip, Lukcy Mohlala visited Matome Malatji High School at Maseke and Sebalamakgalo at Namakgale. Mayor Anah Sono on the same day visited Vuxeni High School at Namakgale and Lepato High School at Makhushane.

The campaign prolonged to Thursday at Lebeko High School and Relebogile High School addressed by Lekganyane and Mohlala while Sono and the other team went to Majeje High School in Lulekani.

The campaign was concluded on Friday with Lekganyane and Mohlala visiting Frans Du Toit.“We only met SMT’s and their circuit managers and they related to us on how they performed and challenges faced throughout the year and how they plan to turn around the situation.

Some of the challenges were relating to systems emanating from the department while some were beyond the teachers control like a single curriculum for accounting for the whole district and the very same offi cial is attached to another district,” explained Mohlala. Mohlala added that the fi lling of critical and other posts remains a huge backlog and Lekganyane committed to engage the department on all matters raised.

Overall results for Namakgale Circuit led by Elizabeth Maphalle were: Maphokwane came 1st with 78.8% as opposed to the 2014 of 89.18%, Vuxeni 2nd with 74.25% as opposed to the 2014 of 74.7%, Relebogile at 3rd with 63.19 as opposed to the 78.65% of 2014, Lepato fourth with 59.67% as opposed to the 77.7% of 2014, Sebalamakgolo fi fth with 54.66 as opposed to the 65.95% of 2014, Lebeko at sixth with 47.51% with 65.30% while Matome Malatji were last with 45.45% and failed to improve on their 2014 72.22%. Lulekani Circuit led by Tilly Baloyi saw All Saints with 100%, Baranuka with 82.75%, Frans Du Toit with 94.44%, Majeje at 62.32%, Makikele at 68.18%, Masaswivona at 53.33%, Meridian at 87.50%, Nkateko at 91.66%, Ntshuxeko at 85.71 and Prieska at 66.67.

The disappointing element of the results shows that though some schools did well and others declined, the number of bachelors dismally declined. Many of the learners Phalaborwa Herald spoke to alluded to grade 10 and 11 learners having being promoted to the grades without having the necessary competency.

Marvin Lebogang Shilabe (18), the brightest of the learners hails from a poor family in Lulekani Township. Shilabe received four distinctions at Nkateko high School scoring 92 in Mathematics, 86 in Physical Sciences, 81 in Life Sciences, 80 in Life Orientation, 77 in Geography, 74 in Xitsonga and 71 in English First Language.

“I did exceptionally well for my 2015 grade 12 examinations and got admitted at WITS to study a Degree towards Mechanical Engineering, but my dreams could soon be a distant reality if none is able to help with the remainder of my funds to the tuition fees, accommodation, books and catering as Wits only gave me a Scholarship worth R10 000 which I paid for the R9340-00 upfront registration fee,” explained a worried Shilabe. Shibale insist that he will double his efforts at University to not only impress his potential funders, but bringing the much needed changes at his family wherein he stays with his granny, aunt and brother. We are calling upon the public and private sectors and individuals to help these students attain their dreams,” explained the co-founder of Lulekani Future Upraising Foundation, Arnold Ubisi. Ubisi further said they went to Mayor Anah Sono’s offi ce on Monday morning and were told the Mayor only deals with political issues and later referred to the Municipal Manager Dr Stimela Sebashe’s offi ce and offi cials there referred them to a skills development offi cial who allegedly said there is nothing he can do about their plight. A municipal offi cial who spoke on condition of anonymity said it is highly regrettable and sad that a Municipality situated in a mining and tourism town doesn’t have a single bursary for exceptional learners or students. “Other MDM Municipalities have bursaries for their learners, but ours doesn’t seem to take into heart the importance of education. We ought to be investing in the future of this town and that derives allocating funds for education in ensuring that those students do come back to work for the Municipality and as such we will be addressing the skills shortage crisis,” explained a concerned employee. Die eerste skietdag van 2016 is baie goed ondersteun met 62 skuts wat aan verskeie tabelle deelgeneem het.

Die skiet op Saterdag is in natterige weer afgehandel, maar die reën kon nie die skuts se geesdrif demp nie. Die winderige toestande het dit moelik gemaak vir die skuts, maar daar is nogtans goeie telling aangeteken.

Die juniors het hierdie jaar ‘n addisionele kategorie vir O/9 skuts.

Die jong skuts mag dooierus gebruik aangesien die windbukse nog ‘n bietjie swaar is vir die buksies. Die O/13 skuts mag nou ook met .22 randslaggewere deelneem. Alle junior skiet word onder die bekwame leiding van Jurie Gouws en Kobus van Wyk gedoen.

Die twee baanoffi siere offer hulle tyd vrywillig op en veiligheid op die baan is nie vir hulle onderhandelbaar nie.

Die volgende skietdag vind op 23 Januarie plaas by die Phalaborwa Skietbaan.

By die geleentheid word daar kleiduiwe geskiet asook die gewilde Vlakvarktabel (kortafstande).

Vir die skuts met ‘n jaghandwapen of ‘n jagboog is daar ook geleentheid om hulself te kom toets of hulle al reg is vir die jagseisoen.
