The past year has been a rich period of challenge and change, growth and gratitude at Daya Counselling Centre.

The need for mental health resources in our community has continued to increase—and despite a decrease in the funding available — Daya has found creative ways to respond. Indeed, we are proud to share that we have increased the number of counselling sessions offered and decreased the average wait for service for the second year in a row!

In the past year we have expanded our internship program and developed new training programs for counsellors/psychotherapists. And (of course!) we have continued to offer short-term counselling, single session counselling and a trauma-sensitive yoga program.

Whether a client is able to pay for counselling, is funded by a community partner or requires the subsidized service our donors so generously support, Daya offers the highest quality professional psychotherapy to all who enter our agency. In 2018-19, Daya’s counsellors helped 1,387 individuals, couples and families develop the tools to heal and become their best selves — better parents, warmer friends, healthier family members and more engaged members of the community.

Daya has not done this alone! The successes we celebrate at Daya are truly the successes of all those who share our values and support our work. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our clients, staff, counsellors, Board of Directors, financial contributors and community partners. Each person contributes to the wellbeing of our community in unique and important ways and we would not be where we are without all of you.

Lisa Bitacola Rebecca Machado Chair, Board of Directors Executive Director

Our dedicated team of reception volunteers create a welcoming experience at Daya when our reception staff are away from the desk. These committed volunteers also make reminder calls, helping clients to keep track of scheduled appointments in the midst of other challenges.

We offer deep thanks to Farha, Iqra, Lauren, Shivani, Marisa, Hend and Radhika for hundreds of hours of client-centered support!

SERVICE SNAPSHOT

SPOTLIGHT: SUPERVISION

In 2018, Daya received support through the Smart and Caring Community Fund at London Community Foundation. Daya turned this $1,350 grant into 1,339 counselling sessions (a $66,305 value)! How did we do that?

The grant funded training in clinical supervision for one team member, who then created a Clinical Supervision Workshop and shared the training with seven counsellors at Daya.

With a greater number of trained clinical supervisors, Daya expanded our Internship Program from 3 to 6 Masters-level students in the previous year to 13 interns in 2018-19!

These skilled interns offered our community 1,339 counselling sessions in 2018 (778 more sessions than could be provided by a smaller group of interns in 2017).

Through supervision, clients received the exemplary standard of service offered by any Daya counsellor.

Daya also welcomed 5 clinicians from our community to the Clinical Supervision Workshop. They enhanced their skill and confidence as clinical supervisors, expanded the number and quality of internships offered and increased service to the community beyond Daya.
