• So what is the name of that of that science where people dig to learn about the past?

• We have talked about archeology before.

• Think back to the beginning of the year when we talked about Sumer

• C Leonard Woolley, while digging for the Babylonians found an older civilization called Sumer.

• The story of finding Troy is like digging through a layer cake

• What do I mean by that? Let’s find out!

• Heinrich Schliemann was a 19th century German millionaire who was obsessed with finding the city of Troy

• One problem…most scholars thought it was a myth like Atlantis or Camelot.

• But the funny thing about myth is that there usually is a kernel of truth to them .

• But where to dig?

• The Iliad places the city of Troy on the Ionian Coast (modern Turkey) along the Dardanelles

• The Dardanelles is a narrow straight connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara

• Can you think of any other “Straights” in the world?

• Most thought Troy was a fictitious place but some believed Homer must have been writing about a real place and a real war.

• There was always a legend that Troy was located at the mound of Hisarlik (Hiss-R-Lick)

• So Heinrich Schliemann went and dug.

• Guess what he found?

• Not just one Troy BUT NINE!!!!

• But how did he come to that conclusion

• Remember when I said digging for Troy was like digging through a layer cake?

• The mound at Hisarlik was 9 cities built atop one another.

• But which one, if any, was the Troy of the Trojan War?

• Schliemann was not a trained archeologist.

• Instead of digging slowly he cut a HUGE trench right down the middle of the mound, exposing layers (like our cake)

• He thought that Troy would be at the bottom

• What he found wasn’t exactly what he was looking for (though he thought it was for a short time)

• He found an older site (1,000 years too early)

• Through he didn’t know it at the time he destroyed part of the actual city he was looking for.

• But that didn’t stop him from announcing to the world he not only found THE Troy of Homer but also Priam’s Treasure

PRIAM’S TREASURE

• Schliemann was a liar.

• 1st he claimed he always wanted to find Troy even since he was a boy (not true)

• 2nd he claimed his wife was with him when he found the treasure (again not true. She was at their home in Athens, Greece.

• When he found out the “treasure” he found was too old to be from Homer’s Troy he knew he goofed.

• He went to the grave believing he found Troy.

• Later archeologist (as late as 2005) think the Troy Homer was talking about is either Troy VI or Troy VII

• Why?

• Troy VI resembles the grand city found in the Iliad.

• Problem is it looks like it was destroyed by an earthquake.

• Could later writers used this in creating the Trojan horse?

• According to Greek mythology Poseidon was the god of the sea and earthquakes.

• Earthquakes were caused by the horses pulling his chariot.

• So was the horse a metaphor for the an earthquake?

• The Trojan Horse is NOT found in the Iliad but in later writings about the fall of Troy.

• But if an earthquake, not the Greeks, destroyed Troy then the story might not be true.

• Let’s go to Troy VII…BUT FIRST

• It was a city of shanty homes and destruction.

• BUT there are signs of warfare such as arrow heads, unburied skeletons, and sling stones used in defense of the city.

• The short answer is NO ONE KNOWS. (DÉJÀ VU anyone?)

• Someone destroyed Troy VII but the arrowheads found could come from anywhere.

• The real story will never be known in full.
