DAY 1
WRITE THE INFORMATION BELOW IN YOUR AGENDA:
I can identify the organs and describe the
function of the Skeletal System.
1. The following data was collected in an experiment. For this set of data, what is the mean?
Plant Total Growth
A 7 cm
B 9 cm
C 9 cm
D 6 cm

Skeletal System
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzxmKAWiN_U Mr. Parr skeletal Activator
The human skeleton consists of…well, tradition says 206, but who really cares? More importantly is what the skeleton does.
1. It provides support for our body.
2. Work together with muscular and nervous system to coordinate movement.
3. They provide protection for vital organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs.
4. Blood is made inside the bones in the marrow. Bones are living. They will bleed when cut and mend themselves when injured.
5. The final function of the skeleton is to provide a reservoir of minerals (calcium, phosphates, potassium, and many other trace elements), which the body can call upon to replenish depleted levels.

5 FUNCTIONS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM ILLUSTRATED
• Bones store minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus, for use by the body
VERTEBRAL COLUMN OR SPINAL CORD
1) The cervical region (neck bones)
2) The thorasic region (what the ribs attach to)
3) The lumbar region (the lower part of the back)
CARPALS OR (WRIST BONES)
Types of Joints
1. Hinge joints like those found in the knee and elbow allow the skeleton to extend or contract.
2. Pivot joints like those found at the top of the spine allow you to look from side to side.
3. Ball and socket joints like those found in the shoulders and hips allow you to rotate your arm and hip (to a lesser degree) 360 degrees.
4. Gliding joints are found in the wrist and between the vertebrae
The skeletal system functions together with the muscular system and the nervous system to provide support and coordinate our movements.

Pivot Joint
Bones are attached to each other with fibrous strands called ligaments. Many sports injuries are related to torn or stretched ligaments.
Ligaments should not be confused with tendons. Tendons are fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones. Tendon injuries are also common in active people.
Cartilage is a smooth, (hard) plastic-like material that is found between major joints like the knee and vertebrae. Cartilage acts both as a shock absorber between joints and as a smooth surface that allows the joints to move with less friction.
WHY DO I NEED TENDONS?
Tendons attach my muscles to my bone. It helps my body move.
Feel your tendon right above your heel in the back of your leg.
This is the thickest tendon in your body.
PROBLEMS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
• Sprain: Swelling in the joint • Arthritis: Inflamed and stiff joints
Closing Questions
1. _______________________ connect bones to other bones
2. _____________________ connect muscles to bones.3. Identify two parts of the body where cartilage
can be found.4. What are the two primary functions of cartilage?
5. Identify two main functions of the skeletal system
6. Where is blood made in the body?
7. What internal organs are protected by the skeleton?
8. The knee and elbow are examples of a _________________ joint.
9. The area where the humerus (upper arm bone) joins the shoulder and where the femur (upper leg bone) joins the pelvis (hip) are examples of _______________________________________ joints.
Ligaments attach bones to other bones.
Cartilage is a smooth, plastic-like substances found between major joints in the body like the knee and between the vertebrae. Cartilage protects bones by absorbing shock and by reducing friction between bones (bones rubbing against each other.)
Tendons attach muscles to bone.
