Introduction to Water

Design Brief:
To design a water system that can be used to recycle grey water at Vigyan Ashram.
To do this we must answer the ‘What,Who,Why,When,How’ questions; What is the project?Who is the project for?Why are we making the project? When does the project have to be
finished by?How are we going to do the project?
But first... Lets look at water in general terms...
Introduction to Water Water Supply Sanitation Water Hygiene Waste Management
Why do I need to learn about water?!
Lets find out!
Water Supply
DrinkingCookingWashing
Feeding animalsGrowing crops
What do we need water for?
Water Sanitation
Sanitation...
What is it?
Prevents transmission of
disease
Good hygiene
Removal of Dirty Water
Human waste removal
Why do we need to remove waste water?
Dirtywater
Breeding Grounds for flies
Breeding Grounds for mosquitoes
Contaminates water supplies
Cholera & many more!
Malaria
Soak Pits can be used with latrines
Latrine
Watertight settling
tank
Solids
Liquids
Soakaway
Pre-treatment Required
Septic Tank Soak Pit
Septic TanksThe tank needs periodic cleaning to remove scum and built up sludge about every 3 years.
Waste water needs to remain in tank for minimum 24 hrs to ensure it settles
Water Hygiene
Water Hygiene
Why?Good water hygiene can improve
health and wellbeing What?
Scrubbing your hand with soap for more than 20s can reduce risk of illness by up to 90%.
Does anyone know the correct hand washing method?!
Waste Management
Why is waste management important?
Protects human healthReduce environment pollution
Make rural areas clean
Convert bio waste into energy
Improves quality of life
Promotes recycling and reuse-save resources

grey
Water terminology! White Water:
Portable, fresh water than can be used for drinking
Grey Water:Left over water from kitchen sink, bathroom,
showers, hand basins, washing machine etc.
Black Water:Sewage or Wastewater: Any water containing
human waste.
ACTIVITY
Split into 4 groups
Decide on a team name Choose a team leader
Survey
Survey how water is used in Vigyan Ashram
Use a range of tools to survey:Photographs & videosDraw mapsSketches
Be thorough – we want to have all the information about water supply and wastewater at Vigyan Ashram.
Photographs
Think about the photograph you are taking:Describe what is happening in the
picture? Why? If someone else who had never been
to Vigyan Ashram looked at photos – what would they see?
The camera can be borrowed for today but must be returned by 5pm.
Draw maps Water moves, map where it comes
from and where it goes. Draw a plan of the whole ashram in
your sketchbooks. Map water usage. E.g:

Storage
Take a measuring tape with you and note measurements of tanks.
Also use measuring tape to work out how long pipes are between storage and usage.
Take particularly detailed measurements around kitchen sinks and water storage for kitchen.
Answer the following questions:
Where do we get our drinking water?
Where is it stored? Where does the wastewater from
all the toilets go? Where does the water from the
sinks and bathrooms go? Where would be good to use grey
water recycling?
But first plan how you are going to conduct the survey as a group...
Homework
By tomorrow:Complete group water assessmentAlso... write down the stakeholders
involved in this project and their needs....
If you would like assistance I will be in office.
The end!
