Judge Bethurum. In • justice myself and in fairness to Judge Bethurnm I make this statement to tbe people. Nntalloeof the article writted by me, and any intention to become mixed up 'n a political controversy is foreign to me or my profession. If H. C. Kennedy has my signature to any paper of a description of the letter in clrcu- lation the following explanation will disclose whether it is ttjere by reason of my desire or whether u wittingly I; have been made the instrument of craft and guile. Several days ago I was in Som orset, and meeting Judge Ken nedv on the street he accosted me and invited me ' to his office. I went with him and soon afterward he asked me tbe following ques tions: "How long have you known me! 1 " and I answered, "About 2s years". He then ask ed, "How long have you known the booK on Baptism that I wrote? I then answered, 'About 20 year: Then he asked mo, if he was 'not elected County Clerk and County Judge of Wayne county after the book was published, and if since he bad not married in a prominent Baptist family of Wayne county, aud I replied in the affirmative. He then asked me if I would ob- ject to certifying these facts to the ueople and I replied that I aid not then he pushed m o a paper to sign assuring the that it contained only the aforesaid facts, a n d I s igned it and left. I was completely dazed and dumblounded' when I read the article to which my signature was attached, and I at. once hastened Somerset to investigate it and repudiate it. Evidently it is the pioductiou of Kennedy himself, and whether tbe i original is tbe paper to which' t|e obtained my signature o r it 1 .wis written - after v departure t dp not know. All the discussipn about his own Religion, the mixing . of religion with politics, and' the criticism' with regard to the appearance of the book on Baptism in this cam- paign are the production of Ken- nedy, and'it is a grave injustice to place such insinuations and charges agains^ good and just official in my offiitb. The eutogv own liberality<and Christian 1 character is his and not mine. The people know the issues in the campaign; they know who is cipable, bonest and upright, and it would be out of keeping of my profession to attempt to define these pi dictate the people's choice I have known Judge Behturuhi from tbe time he became Common- wealth Attorney and I known that office fearlessly credaitably. And yet the . article sent forth over my signature charges him ^ith ( unfairness and Intimates corruption, Unhesitat iogly I repudiate these and firm my lull faith in his integrity honesty and The article make me charie discrimination in the selection of juries, and yet I know noth'ing^f the-procedure of same, save to ipy knowledge the Jamaica.
