• According an article published by Science Daily regarding the positive effects green tea has on one’s health, “Now, researchers are reporting first evidence that green tea extract enhances the cognitive functions, in particular the working memory,” (University of Basel, Green Tea Extract Boosts Your Brain Power).

• In addition, the academic journal, Psychopharmacology, has published their recent findings suggest green tea is beneficial for cognitive impairment treatment in psychiatric disorders like dementia.

• In the past, ingredients within green tea have been used for cancer research and to study how antioxidants play a role in one’s health, as green tea is loaded with polyphenols like catechins and flavonoids.

• But, now scientists are recognizing that drinking green tea has a profoundly positive impact on the human brain.

• According to Science Daily’s article:

• “In a new study, the researcher teams of Prof. Christoph Beglinger from the University Hospital of Basel and Prof. Stefan Borgwardt from the Psychiatric University Clinics found that green tea extract increases the brain’s effective connectivity, meaning the causal influence that one brain area exerts over another. This effect on connectivity also led to improvement in actual cognitive performance: Subjects tested significantly better for working memory tasks after the admission of green tea extract,” (University of Basel, Green Tea Extract Boosts Your Brain Power).

• Volunteers during this study were healthy males who were given a soft drink that contained several gram soft green tea extract. They were then asked to solve working memory tasks after the green tea was ingested.

• Scientists analyzed through MRI’s (magnetic resonance imaging) how brain activity was affected, which showed an increase connectivity between the parietal and frontal cortex of the brain.

• According to Science Daily, “The research results suggest promising clinical implications: Modeling effective connectivity among frontal and parietal brain regions during working memory processing might help to assess the efficacy of green tea for the treatment of cognitive impairments,” (University of Basel, Green Tea Extract Boosts Your Brain Power).
