8th District Newsletter September 2017

Sup. Sartori with the band leader Sarah at the Flag Day celebration in South Milwaukee.

Recent events of the past few weeks have propelled me to register my public dismay

and extreme personal disappointment in the hate-inspired events that have occurred

here in our beloved America.

We should all respect freedom of responsible speech and peaceful assembly. Howev-

er, using these two methods to advance intimidation and extreme and repugnant ide-

ology is distressing. The malignant growth of hateful behavior, such as in Char-

lottesville, VA are reminiscent of the torch-lit parades of the 1930’s held in fascist Nu-

remberg, Germany. The following day, one counter-protester was killed, scores of

others injured, when an apparent unhinged social misfit rammed his vehicle into a

group of bystanders. Two police officers were indirectly killed in the chain of events as

well. What we have been witnessing is nothing less than the unraveling of a portion of

our social fabric.

We should all remember that evil will always prevail as long as good men and women

remain on the sidelines.

Furthermore, while I am writing this message the terrible news of Hurricane Harvey is affecting the lives of our fellow

Americans in the Gulf region. One of the few positive effects is how many citizens have come out to assist their rela-

tives, neighbors, and fellow Americans. We truly can be proud of the generosity and caring of the American people. In

the days ahead, both secular and non-secular agencies and organizations will solicit volunteer talent and monetary help

for those in need. None of us can do everything, but we all can do something to help those in need.

Here at the County Courthouse, I am busy and getting busier—but I love every aspect of representing the 8th district.

The County Executive has appointed me to his newly created “retirement sustainability task force,” and I am one of the

two Supervisors appointed to this twenty member group. We will study and ultimately make recommendations regarding

the future of our County pension system.

Beginning in October, we will start the annual task of creating a County budget for calendar year 2018. The County Ex-

ecutive has forecasted a fiscal deficit of about $43 million dollars. He has held three public “listening sessions,” and I

have attended two to hear what the people of Milwaukee County are saying. Our total budget is $1.1 billions dollars an-

nually. I want to know your priorities going into this process, and I hope you will keep me informed.

Senior Centers Much concern has been expressed

by our senior citizens to my office

regarding the senior meal program

and various kind of programming

conducted at our various senior cen-

ter facilities. Currently, we have no

plans to close any of our senior cen-

ters!

We hope that we can continue to get

grants and maintain our level of

programming for our seniors.

This includes seniors like my wife

and your truly. Please remember,

I’m a phone call away when you

have a question about County activi-

ties or need services. Peace, joy, and

blessings to you.

Police Chief Ann Wellens to Retire

South Milwaukee Police Chief Ann Wellens is retiring effective Jan. 19, 2018 — 30 years after she started in law enforcement and more than 28 years after she began at the South Milwaukee Police Department. Ann has served admirably as South Milwaukee’s chief for more than 12 years. Please join me in wishing Chief Wellens well as she begins the next chapter of her life, and in thanking her for her hard work in leading a department that has rightfully earned the respect of many others across the state. She leaves a lega-cy of dedication, integrity and professionalism that will be hard to match.

Milwaukee County Home Repair.

The Milwaukee County Housing Division provides a home repair program using Federal CDBG and HOME funds in County communities excluding West Allis and the City of Milwaukee. The program offers low interest and 0% interest loans to income qualified homeowners to make repairs, correct code violations, make modifications for accessibility, and eliminate lead paint hazards. Staff provides clients with a lead risk assessment, a detailed scope of work, and bids out work to be done. Home-owners receive a loan and sign contracts with approved contractors selected by the owner that are cost reasonable. After satisfactory completion, the County pays contractors from loan funds and the owner pays the county back over a period of several years. Listed below are income limits based on

household size. Please call 414-278-4917 if you are interested in applying for the program.

South Milwaukee Police Department Announcement:

The South Milwaukee Police Department is seeking to promote understanding improved relationships between the department and the community. To this end, we are seeking citizen participation in a Citi-zen's Academy. This academy is designed not to train those who attend to become police officers, but rather to provide information that will help enhance understanding of how the Police Department per-forms its duties and responsibilities.

This 10 week program is set to begin in September. It will be held once a week for 3 hours during the evening. Citizen participation in this program is encouraged. We at the Police Department are committed to a frank and forthright dialog about the topics covered in the Academy curriculum.

For more information and an application, please contact Lt Chad Milow at (414) 768-8060 or at [email protected]

Thank you.
