THE BLACKSTONE SHOW

(The following report is from a review of TheBlackstone Show written by Bill Larsen whichappears in the Sept. 1980 issue of "Genii. )

"Circus of Mysteries! A barely-believable bo-nanza of baffling big top bewilderment thatsplendiferously showcases a scintillating ser-ies of sagacious and startling sawdust sorcery• The Daring Young Lady - The ConfoundingCannon (An illusion of top calibre) - Here'sthat guy again (Or is it?}."This is the big closing spectacular with theentire cast dressed in circus outfits and Har-ry Blackstone himself as the "ringmaster".The set is very clever as we see the outlineof the "big top" going up as the curtainopens. Excellent choreography here asthroughout the show.Spot includes the vanish of a girl from thecargo net, "The Greatest Trick on Earth" asBecky Garrett is shot from a cannon into anest of three boxes; changing Becky, whogets into a cage, into a tiger and to concludea transposition wherein Harry Blackstonechanges places with "The Wiz" and a gorilla. In doing so Harry Blackstone makes a com-plete costume change which brought him awell-deserved standing ovation as the show'sfinal curtain came down just two hours and10 minutes after it went up.

Austin. Texas - Oct. 5 - The 33rd annualBen Hur Shrine Circus under the supervisionof General Circus Chairman Alfred 0. Trampkicked off the first of the 1980 Texas dates.Fifteen performances were scheduled in theseven day period, preceded by a fish fry host-ed by Ben Hur Temple for the performers andpersonnel and visiting divans from the otherfour temples involved in the circuit.

The Austin circus was the third to join thiscombine coming in with Houston and FortWorth 21 years ago. Following Austin cameSan Antonio and finally Dallas. Alfred 0.Tramp has been General Circus Chairman for12 years and in an interview with CR saidthat the shrine had received more supportfrom the media this year than from any pre-vious year, certainly more free publicity. Ad-vance prmotion was brisk, but attendanceremained spotty which meant the box officewas off from 1979.

Officials were at a loss to explain this dropin attendance but attributed it to several fac-tors; the Rimjling show had been in ahead ofthe shrine to excellent business, skimmingoff the cream, and there is no doubt that theunsettled economy and an uncertain presi-dential year contributed to this decline to adegree.

For the first few days of the run, Austinwas in the grip of monsoon-like rains whichboosted attendance but then the weathercleared and once again temperatures climbedinto the 90's. The Austin Coliseum is notair-conditioned and it was unbearably hotfor the matinee performances. Mr. Trampsaid that for several years the city has beenplanning to update the coliseum, to enlargethe building to double its length and to in-stall air-conditioning and he hopes the newbuilding becomes a reality in 1981.

The Ben Hur Shrine Circus program ran asfollows: Overture; Spec, featuring Michelleand Nicole Les Moines slide for life; Displaywith Dante, The Laddies, and Isabella; TheFlying Ibarras; Irving Hall, comedy unicycle; The Smahas; Aerial display with the PauloSisters, Billy Barton, the Galambos; Jugglingdisplay with Yahia Awada and Ron Perry;Clown Firehouse; Display with Trudy's Dal-matians and Susan Sheryll's Afghans; CircusClowns; Satani Demon; Trapeze bird cage

display '•••vuring Bridget Ballantine; Inter-mission.

Second half opened with the Great Huber-to, slide for life; Wade Burck and the Haw-thorn tigers; Poco's Little Car; Les Moines, aerial motorcycle; Professor Shappi's cra/vpiano; Clowns with the "road construction";Wire display with The Rianos and Los La-tinos; Johnny and Davide Zoppe's RhesusMonkeys; the Tanger Troupe; the HawthornElephants 15) worked by Wade Burck and (3)worked by Dieter Wichert; Clown Washerwo-men; Space Production number introducingThe Quassars, finale.

Staff included: Alfred 0. Tramp, producer;Bob Atterbury, director; Keith Killinger, mu-sical director with Leo Mascitto and drum-mer Steve Lockwood, plus local sidemen;Ernie Mac Lean, ringmaster-vocalist; RexYoung, producing clown with Irving Hall,Sandy Young, Poco and Slo-Poke; Earl Mi-chaels, assistant to Bob Atterbury, and per-formance director; Billy Barton, aerial dir-ector; Frank Galambos. prop boss with four-teen men and Mike Duke, head rigger; CarolAtterbury and Betty Huber, wardrobe.

The Houston date, following Austin andunder the command of Jim McMahan, willhave a different program schedule which willbe adhered to for the remaining Shrine dates.

Extra acts are also scheduled for these datesand two more elephant acts, bringing the fullherd to 19 bulls will be in Houston - the TonyDiano Elephants and the Bucky Steele andBarbara Tata elephants.

PROF. STU MILLER

CARSON & BARNES CIRCUS

In mid-Sept., I was fortunate, along with myfriend and house guest Fred (Merlin) Marcoof Rhode Island, to visit my old "alma ma-ter", the Carson & Barnes Circus.I toured on the show in 1968 in Clown Alleyas well as handling the side show magic andP.R. work; and was also on Kelly-Miller witha lot of the same folks in 1963.This was the first time I'd seen the show ina good many years and was quite impressedwith it. My old boss Dorey Miller, as well asTed Bowman and all on the show were mostgracious, and the new Italian-made big topwas a sight to behold and quite a changefrom the "recycled rags" we had played un-der in years past.It was great to see my old pal from Hubler

and the Emmett Kelly, Jr. Circus, Phil Chan-dler, doing such a great job of announcingthe show. Phil's magic, illusions and charis-ma add an awful tot to a fine performanceand his "Wizard of Oz" themed illusion pre-sentation is unique and first rate for anyshow. To me, this was a circus that looked like acircus should * and how D. R. Miller does itin this time of inflation, and keep a herd of26 elephants, is a wonder and the old mas-ter showman has my respect.Fred Marco and Phil Chandler had a lot totalk about, as Phil was the original "Merlinthe Magician" on the Emmett Kelly, Jr. Cir-cus in 1972 and Fred succeeded him as 'IMer-lin' on that show upon Phil's departure. With shows like Carson & Barnes, Vargas,Beatty-Cole and a few others out there stillplugging away, we can be assured that ourkids and grandchildren can still enjoy the"old time" flavor of the American tentedcircus.

The Circus Report Page 25

Show ReportFROM DON COVINGTON

My family and I were recently on the EastCoast and while in New York attended a per-formance of the Broadway show "Barnum."The musical, co-produced by Judy Gordon,Cy Coleman, Maurice and Lois Rosenfield, and In/in and Kenneth Feld, is a real delight.Jim Dale, the British star who fills the titlerole is one of those rare talents who can elec-trify an audience whenever he's onstage; luckity, he's present 80% of the time during "Bar-num". His selection as the year's best actorby both the Tony and Drama Desk Awardsis well deserved. Also winning awards wereDavid Mitchell for the set and Theoni Al-dredge for costumes. From start to finish the audience is caughtup in the excitement off the show. Bamum'senthusiasm for life and show business is con-tagious. Circus fans will appreciate lots ofnice touches in the framing of the show. Before you enter the St. James Theatre youare greeted by the sound of calliope musicdrifting down Broadway from a speakerover the marquee. Outside the doors to theshow, R. J. Lewis extols the virtues of what's"on the inside" from a bally platform fromwhich he also performs some captivating ma-gic.Once inside you're greeted by the curtainlessstage containing an array of props and rig-ging, including trapeze and high wire. The or-chestra is located on stage for most of theshow, though they occasionally move up totake part in the plot and lead off the secondact with a rousing parade down the aisles.

The entire performance, as a matter of fact, frequently moves about the theatre to the de-light of the crowd. As you are seated, actors, mimes, musicians and clowns are everywhereentertaining early arrivals and escorting late-comers to their seats. The boxes on eitherside of the stage contain upright pianos andthe costumed piano players in each play cheerful rags before, during and after the show.It appears as if everyone in the cast has a var-iety of talents, for in addition to singing, act-ing and dancing, which everyone does excep-tionally well, there are jugglers, mimes, acro-bats, aerialists. clowns, and even a one manband.Jim Dale, whom the program notes had ne-ver been on the wire before, even manages tosing a very convincing love song while walk-ing a tight wire from one side of the stage tothe other.Credit for the circus training is given to theBig Apple Circus and The New York Schoolfor Circus Arts; however, circus fans will no-tice quite a few alumni of the Ringling ClownCollege and the Greatest Show on Earth. Wil-liam C. Witter, who plays the ringmaster, Ju-lius Goldschmidt, and James A. Bailey; tour-ed with RBBB for three yean, as did StevenMichael. Sophie Schab, who was the worldchampion baton twirier while at Northwest-em gets a chance to show her style while dancing in the chorus. Perhaps the best knownRingling almunus is Barbara Nadel, who wasRingling's second lady clown.Though prices are steep ($12.50427.50) andtickets are difficult to get, I whole-heartedlyrecommend the show. Go expecting a light, stimulating evening and you won't be disap-pointed.

H U M B O L D T E R S LOVED CIRCUSES

Eureka, Calif. -1882

by Wallace E. Martin, from his book "Red-wood Frontier" published in 1961.

Northwestern California's old-timers lovedthe theatre and circuses. When entertain-ment came to town, the visiting companyseldom failed to draw an enthusiastic crowd.Circuses had trouble getting to HumboldtCounty. For a long time, few elephants reached this part of the state, unless they came ov-erland. Ships couldn't accommodate the bigniimals. It is more likely shipping companieswouldn't consider pachyderms as passengers. It was good news when trie Robinson & Wes-tman Circus came to Humboldt County inSeptember 1882. The show had appeared inFemdale a day or two previous before a $600muse, which was considered good for the

small town.Robinson & Westman's Circus gave their firstperformance in this place (Eureka) last night, the Humboldt Times reported. "As is custo-mary when a circus comes to town the crowd

'catches on' and the tent is filled to its utmostcapacity. The performance consisted of tricksby McCue's famous trained horses, groundand lofty tumbling, and acrobatic feats by thelimber men, feats of strength by the man withthe 'iron jaw' and the other little acts that areusually presented at such a combination show"The trick horse, Americus, is a good one anddoes some wonderful things. McCue has spenttime and money in educating this animal upto the standard. The acrobats are good, andmany of their movements and acts loudly en-cored. In this class the contortionist is oneof the best, we believe in the program. He ispliable as India rubber, and can get himselfinto more inconceivable shapes in less spaceof time than it takes to tell it. His barrel actis a wonder."The sword swallower comes in for notice. His must be a queer anatomy, as he success-fully runs five swords into his stomach at onetime, and then removes them without injuryto himself..."
