THE IoT STORY

You may have heard of the Internet of Things: the growing network of devices that can connect, communicate and transfer

data between one another. Well, the same thing is happening in the industrial world given the pace of technology.

Thanks to the falling cost of connectivity, industrial manufacturers are gathering more data from more devices than ever

before. And it’s giving rise to a new era of opportunities through Industrial Internet of Things or IIoT.

IIoT is the DNA of modern industrial operations. It establishes a framework to enable closed loop business operations. Our

approach to IIoT can:

• Connect to, and store data from a range of industrial devices

• Deliver contextualized information to the industrial workforce

• Extend & adapt to all industrial operations

At Schneider Electric we have absorbed this concept and have been delivering value across this

continuum of technologies for the last 30 years. We see differentiating value for our Customers

given the new opportunities enabled by IIoT

Internet Of Things (IoT) / Industry 4.0 *

• 15x growth in machine generated data by 2020

(interoperability)

• 50x growth in stored data by 2020 (Big Data)

• 85% of devices are not connected yet (timing)

• $19 trillion estimated untapped value (opportunity)

Platforms

• Windows CE / Windows Embedded (strong position in

Industrial HMIs)

• VxWorks (nearly 40% of traditional RTOS shipments)

• Linux (more than 25% of all embedded shipments –

much more, adding Android)

Internet of Things (IoT)

• Hype

• As with “Object-oriented”, “Web”, & “Cloud”

• Vendors (including SE) “piling on” to capture attention

• “Consumerized” Instrumentation

• Lower cost to manufacture, apply & own

• “Good enough” for less safety-critical applications

• Radical change in pricing models & expectations

• MQTT Emerging As Dominant Interface

What is MQTT?

• MQTT stands for MQ Telemetry Transport. It is a publish/subscribe,

extremely simple and lightweight messaging protocol, designed for

constrained devices and low-bandwidth, high-latency or unreliable

networks. The design principles are to minimise network bandwidth

and device resource requirements whilst also attempting to ensure

reliability and some degree of assurance of delivery. These

principles also turn out to make the protocol ideal of the emerging

“machine-to-machine” (M2M) or “Internet of Things” world of

connected devices, and for mobile applications where bandwidth

and battery power are at a premium.
