NEWSLETTER Issue 3, Term 3 2015 Dear Parents, Students & Staff The 2019 school year seems to be moving at a quicker pace than usual. We are fast approaching the end of school for our Year 12 students with only the holiday mock exams to get through and the first week of school at the commencement of Term 4. All too soon we will be saying goodbye to our class of 2019 at their Farewell Day on the 18 October and celebrate the end of their schooling on Monday the 21 October at the Valedictory Ceremony. As all teachers will tell you, this is one of happiest times of the year for us and also one of the saddest. It is great to see the Year 12’s complete their education and watch them leave knowing you have done the best you could do for each child; however, saying goodbye is difficult knowing that you won’t see their smiling faces around the next corridor. The commencement of the term saw our Senior Leadership team working with our Year 10 students and their parents in developing their future pathways with course counselling. As always, this is a wonderful opportunity for us to meet with the parents and help to ensure that each individual student is counselled into subjects that are enjoyable and relevant to their individual needs. Once again we were able to offer new subjects to our students which have proven very popular. These include: Japanese, Accounting and Finance, Drama and Design: Photography. Our goal is to make the subjects being offered to our students relevant to their needs and interests and it is wonderful to see students wanting to engage in subjects they are truly interested in. Term 3 has seen us have many successes in both our Specialist Netball and Specialist Basketball programs, with teams reaching Quarter Final or Grand Finals and the netball girls winning the Multicultural Cup. I would like to take time out to congratulate Mr Isaac Thomas and his Year 7 students engaged in the Rugby League Academy who last week won the State Specialist Schools Championship, going through undefeated and winning the Grand Final by 5 tries. I must also congratulate these students for their sportsmanship and attitude on the day. It is my understanding that the boys “kept it REAL” all day. Congratulations boys, I can’t wait to see how you develop over the coming years. Talking about “keeping it REAL”, Fridays are always busy down in the Library with students collecting their rewards for their PBS points. This term also saw all students engaged in another PBS lesson on Appropriate Language and Code Switching. Engaging our staff and students in this new approach has been very exciting and I am hoping to engage our current parents and future parents in an opportunity to help ensure that the way we engage with our parents is as positive and relevant as we can make it next term. Finally, I would like to thank all those parents that attended our Whole School Sports Carnival on Tuesday 17 September. It was wonderful to see all of our students decked out in their house colours and engaging with our staff in a fun environment outside the classroom. It is days such as this that build the supportive school community that we all want our children to be a part of. Dear Parents, Students & Staff

The 2019 school year seems to be moving at a quicker pace than usual. STUDENT LEADERS REPORT

For our final newsletter as school captains, we would like to give you a bit of insight on our final year at RSHS. We cannot believe how quickly our year as school captains has gone by and we wish we could’ve got more done in our time but we are both proud of our efforts. So as our final chapter closes we would like to talk about some of the special moments and memories that we and the Year 12’s have shared this year. With houses being introduced this year, we have really enjoyed leading our houses and the communities that houses have created. Our PBS day, Tryathon and athletics carnival have allowed us to show our house spirit and create an atmosphere that brings out our competitive sides while still having fun. If you know us, you would know how competitive we both are; especially towards each other so we have loved this! One of the biggest highlights of the year for the Year 12’s was the annual school ball. This was a night where we got to forget about our roles and responsibilities from school and from the outside world and just let loose and have fun while making memories that we as a year group will look back on in the future and smile to. The different varieties of music that catered to everybody's tastes allowed everyone to get out of their seats and dance all night long until we were told to leave. With people mixing with people who they maybe wouldn’t have thought to talk to in a different environment, it made a good night to forget about our own individual groups and bring our year group closer as a whole. As school captains we feel that we really made a conscious effort to make our school better for the future generations. These students will be embarking on their own life journey’s just like we did. Our goal was to help the students at Rockingham feel happier and enthusiastic about coming to school and also create school spirit. We feel like the small steps we made to do this will be the building blocks to an exciting new future at Rockingham Senior High School. The friendships that we have made over the past five years are friendships that we will cherish forever. Even as we embark on different journeys and go our separate ways the memories we have created will always be with us as we remember one of the most important parts of our lives. We would like to thank every single Year 12 for making not only our lives at Rockingham enjoyable but for making everyone else’s journey that much better. It saddens us that we have to leave but we still have our Farewell Day and Valedictory ceremony to still look forward to. I know for us, these will be days of very mixed emotions. We are very excited to graduate school and start the next chapter of our lives but we are also really sad to leave Rockingham Senior High School behind. Farewell Day will be a day filled with lots of laughter and everlasting memories! We are especially excited for it. Hayley Withnell and Ena Mickle School Captains.

Week 3 of this term saw Rockingham Senior High School staff, students and parents celebrate very successful results for our Semester 1, reports. These assemblies were held in Period 2 for students in Year 7 –9 and in Period 3 for students in Year 10—12. As always the focus on Student Academic Success, looks at both the individual’s whole of school results, and the top students across all Learning Areas. This year we saw not only a greater number of Learning Area awards given out, but we also saw an increase in the number of students achieving individual success resulting in an increase in the number of Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. Over the years we have seen an improvement in the number of successful students in Learning Area’s and we have ensured that our awards reflect the success of our students. Most importantly, the number of students who are achieving individual success has been amazing. Our semester 1 reports saw the following successes: Year 7 GOLD: 3 SILVER: 16 BRONZE: 45 Year 8 GOLD: 4 SILVER: 12 BRONZE: 32 Year 9 GOLD: 3 SILVER: 8 BRONZE: 20 Year 10 GOLD: 1 SILVER: 10 BRONZE: 36 Year 11 GOLD: 5 SILVER: 14 BRONZE: 22 Year 12 GOLD: 2 SILVER: 5 BRONZE: 11 Congratulations to all of our award recipients. We hope to see such great results for your Semester 2 Awards.

This term, 13 of our Netball Program students with positive attendance, were lucky enough to win a free ticket to watch the West Coast Fever take on NSW Swifts, at the Perth Arena on Saturday, 27 July 2019. Mrs Nurse and Miss Murphy were so impressed with they way they all conducted themselves - but that should be no surprise to anyone!!

SPECIALIST NETBALL REWARD

In Dare to Design this term, our Year 10 students had a trip down memory lane as they had a go at making potato stamps and using them to print shapes onto paper and then fabric as the first steps in designing and printing their own T shirt and fabric.

This term the class has been learning about Image Composition, using the DSLR cameras in Manual Mode and How to edit using Photoshop. In Week 9 this term, students exhibited their work in the Library for our Annual Visual Art Exhibition called 'Ignition'. Further works based on Still Life Photography were featured as well as Year 10 Fashion Photography.

Congratulations to our Year 9/10 High School Cup team, who competed in the elimination finals rounds, at Fremantle Netball Association. They played beautifully across the day, making the quarter finals, after gaining redemption in our final cross over game, against the school that ended our run last year. Unfortunately, we may have peaked a game too early, losing the quarter final by 1 point...but what a game!!!

Well done also to our younger team who came to support our girls. They participated in the trial of our 'SEE IT, BE IT' off court program... you guys were fantastic and we hope you found it valuable. We can't wait to share it with the rest of the Year 7 & 8's later in the term.

We perhaps didn't get the overall result we wanted, but finishing top 8 (estimated 5th place) in the state, is a fantastic achievement. We are so incredibly proud of you all!

Our Year 7 girls soccer team took part in the Lightning Carnival in Melville on Friday, 9 August. The team were placed in to B Division, and after only 2 weeks preparation, finished 2nd, just behind Rossmoyne SHS. They performed fantastically and were a credit to the school. They recorded victories against Gilmore College, Applecross SHS and Willetton SHS.

Following on from the success of their work at the Rockingham-Kwinana Hospital, the Open Book Crew teamed up again with artist, Samantha Prentice to help with some celebratory artwork at Bungaree Primary School. The Primary school will be celebrating its 50th anniversary later this year.

Also a big thank you to the crew for creating the amazing scalextric track for the House competitions. This track is in the library and is there for all year groups to have an opportunity to race for their House. Check into House HQ to register.

On Friday the 2nd of August, students in the Year 8 & 9 ACE and Aspirant classes took part in Techtrails. Students engaged with guest speakers and activities to see how STEM based study can help with their career pathway options. Thanks to Ms Rebecca Barton for overseeing such an interesting and informative incursion!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Mr Hays Year 12 Building and Construction class. In my role of Associate Principal I was so impressed with the construction activities that these students have undertaken this year. Firstly, the Year 12’s created the wooden horses which you can see in one of the pictures—then they planned, designed and built an attachment to the Garden shed. This is a tremendous task that has been an amazing opportunity for the class and ensures that they have an understanding of building skills now and in the future. Thank you to the Year 12 students and Mr Hays for sharing this experience with me.

The focus of this year’s Science Week was Space. The Friday saw the Science Department launch some of the best water rockets built by the students over the course of the week. It was a close competition with entries from students in Stirling, Carnac and Perron all blasting up as high as the 1st floor balcony. After some knock out rounds the Orange and Yellow Carnac rocket made by Year 7 student Tayla Tratt was a clear winner, with Stirling taking out 2nd prize and Perron 3rd!

Congratulations and well done to all those who took part this week.

It has been a very busy term in the Music Program this term. Year 11 students in our Cert II Music class got the chance to create and record their very own original song, whilst learning about the recording process at RADA Studios. Called “Rocko Anthem " you can listen to it on our Facebook page. Our instrumental music school services (IMSS) students, had the amazing opportunity to partake in the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra’s (WAYJO) workshop/performance incursion, at our school on Wednesday the 4th of September. Students had a wonderful time jamming with WAYJO and thoroughly enjoyed their performances! Thanks to WAYJO for this wonderful and valuable experience.

Junior Choir Festival Another year, and another wonderful Junior Choir festival was held today at Rockingham Senior High. Our wonderful choir performed in front of the local Primary Schools. All singers sounded absolutely beautiful! Well done to all involved.

The Year 12 Human Biology class have had the opportunity to undertake workshops at the Zoo and Murdoch University this term to support their studies of Biotechnology & Evolutionary Trends. The students have positively represented the school. While experiencing hands on learning and seeing some of the opportunities & resources available to them at University. - Miss King

Term 3 has been very successful for out Specialist Basketball students. Our Year 9 male and female teams competed in their lightning carnival at end of term 2. Both of these teams went through undefeated.

Our students also competed in the Junior Harbour League Carnival. Our Boys Team won 8-0 and our Girls Team won 4-2. Both teams have progressed through to the South of River Finals. Our Senior Girls Team competed in the All Schools Final against Shenton. Unfortunately, we came second 62-44. It was a great effort considering the team consisted of only one Yr12 student, with three Yr10’s, two Yr8’s and a Yr7. Congratulations to the Yr 10 Girls who competed in the State 3v3, resulting in them being runners up. Great effort. Finally, Congratulations to the Year 7 Specialist Basketball teams who were the Year 7 Lightning Carnival Champions for both boys and girls.

Multicultural Event Congratulations to our entire netball contingent, who participated in the 2019 Multicultural Carnival, at the Gold Netball Centre. Once again you were all fantastic representatives for Rockingham Senior High School, in what was a very busy and exhausting day. All 8 of our teams did a great job embracing the 'participation' ideology of the carnival, with all teams finishing in top 4 for their respective divisions. Our Year 10's had a clean sweep, bringing home some new medallions for their collection. . Thank you to the girls who helped cover umpiring and team manager duties throughout the day....we really do appreciate your efforts.

The Year 9 students have just completed the first part of the Bendigo Bank competition. All students research, cost and present to the class an idea that will benefit our local community. Each class winner competes in week 9 to win $300 from the Bendigo Bank. The school winner will then go on to compete in an interschool competition and present their idea to representatives from Murdoch University, Bendigo Bank and the shire council. Well done to all students who have completed this task and we look forward to hearing the winning teams from each class present their ideas in Week 9.

This term students from Ms Vandenberg’s Year 11 class visited the Supreme and District Courts. Students engaged in a tour of the Supreme Court, viewed a District Court case in session and participated in a Mocktrial.

This same group of students also played host to the Premier Mark McGowan. Mr McGowan attended the school on the 20 September to answer students questions on his role as the areas Parliamentary Representative.

Congratulations to our Year 7 Specialist Netball teams who competed in the Year 7 Lightning carnival. It was a fantastic day for the Netball Program, with our Year 7's having an undefeated run at their Lightning Carnival... bringing home the flag for both of our divisions. Once again each and every one of the girls were outstanding representatives for Rockingham SHS and the Netball Program.

The Chicken Hatching Education Program “U Can Hatch Us” Chicken Hatching Education Programs are a great way to watch and gain valuable experience and knowledge about the development of a chicken. Hatching the chicks in the library is a big hit and "eggciting". The chickens are here for a two week period and students and staff visit regularly to see how the chicks are growing. During recess and lunch students and staff have the opportunity to watch the chicks eat, drink and explore their pen, and are also given the opportunity to hold the chickens whilst supervised.

Children’s Book Week 17 to 23 August 2019 The theme for CBCA Book Week 2019 was ‘Reading is my Secret Power’ and reading does indeed give us secret powers. The Library used the theme to link Super heroes to animals with similar powers - such as Wolverine and the Hairy Frog because both can attack with their inbuilt talons. There were many competitions where students followed a trail of displays such as “Match the Super Pet with the Super Teacher”, “Win a Skateboard” and “Guess how many books in our Library”. Year 11 High School Band in the Library During Book week the Library hosted the Year 11 High School band, The students played 3 set songs and the crowd enjoyed the music along with some toasted sandwiches and cake. Children’s Book week Fundraiser dress up day Rockingham Senior High School held a Book Week dress up day and raised $339.00 for Radio Lollipop at Rockingham Hospital. Radio Lollipop runs a radio station in the Children’s Ward to entertain children. The theme was “Come as your favourite Super Hero or Book character”, with many staff and students participating.

The highlight of Arts Week, last Thursday, was the opportunity to attend the Arts night - "Belonging", at Koorliny Arts Center in Kwinana. Wow what an evening of talent and entertainment. Our Music Program and Dance Program go from strength to strength each year, and this year for the first time our Drama Program joined the event. A huge congratulation’s to all of our Arts students who took part in this event. You inspired and wowed the audience and the effort that you have dedicated to your chosen field was demonstrated at this event. A big thank you to Mrs Brown, Mrs Fay and Miss Tuckey for assisting the students to shine in their chosen field and also to the staff who helped out on the night. Being given the opportunity to attend this event is a highlight of the school calendar, and for those who haven't had the privilege to attend this event, make sure you look out for it next year.

Our Focus Week for Term 3 was Mental Health Week. We hosted Youth Focus, Helping Minds, St John Ambulance Road Trauma, Black Dog Institute, Headspace and the Theatrical Response Group. On Friday of that week our Senior School students facilitated an amazing Mental Health expo.

During this term we have also hosted Aboriginal Health who ran a 10 week program for our Aboriginal students. More than 20 students attended every week. Fiona and Josh from Aboriginal Health complimented our students on their behaviour and level of engagement. Another highlight of this term was the Mental Health programs which ran for 4-6 weeks with our Year 10 students. All Year 10 students were asked to complete a Strengths and Difficulties questionnaire. Those students who were identified as needing additional support in any of these categories; Emotional, Conduct, Peer or Prosocial were invited to join a group. These sessions were facilitated by Adam from Armed for Life, Chaplain Matt Di Gregorio, Clinical Nurse Community Health Jane Firth and Allison Davis, School Psychologist Gillian King and Student Services Coordinator Michelle Dirksz. Post survey results show that the students gained a lot of support, knowledge and coping strategies after completing their program. During week 6 we also invited ySafe to speak with all students in Years 7 – 10. Students were taught about the impact of cyber bullying on both the victim and the bully, as well as promoting bystander empowerment. Students were taught a variety of strategies to upskill them in managing cyber bullying. Our students gave very positive feedback after their presentations. We hope this is a lesson that is put into practice by every student. We were also fortunate to secure three speakers from Sideffect who spoke about drugs with our year 10 cohort. The presenters from Sideffect focused on intervention and education as being the key to harm minimisation. The students were privileged to hear a first-hand story from a grieving father who lost his son after he took a synthetic form of LSD. Our students were given a clear message about what drugs can do to you and how they affect your family and community. The presentation was powerful and emotional and I hope our students absorbed the information. Overall, it has been a very busy and successful Term 3 in Student Services.
