Dear Parent/Carer As always, term 1 has started at pace with so many events and activities being undertaken across the year groups and subject areas. We have seen the Middle Years Programme begin year 2 with the Year 8 students and as always it is wonderful to see them engaging in learning based around the IB profile. We recently hosted a week long placement visit from a senior member of staff from Dartford Grammar School for Boys who commented on how wonderful it was to see the independence of learning, the engagement of students and quiet settled nature of our community. I am always proud to hear feedback about Longfield, but coming from one of the best schools in Kent was certainly high praise indeed! I would like to thank parents for their support with our behaviour charter that has enabled students to see a clear stepped approach to encouraging good behaviour but also understanding the consequences of poor choices. It is so important that students see that the relationship between home and the academy is strong and united so that together we can guide our young people through the complexities of growing up. Making mistakes is part of that maturity process and understanding the consequences of poor choices is important so thank you for your ongoing support with this. As a reminder, please ensure that over the holidays, uniform is replenished so that students return with smart, correct uniform. As the weather closes in, please ensure that students are wearing robust shoes (not trainers) and have a coat (not a hoodie). Uniform guidance is on our website should you need clarification. Whilst we are not expecting terrible weather just yet, please begin to think about what plans could be put in place if we were to have snowy conditions that would affect the opening/closure of the academy. Whilst this is a rare occurrence, the health & safety of students and staff must always take priority when making such decisions. Over the holidays we have a number of intervention & support sessions for students to work on their GCSE coursework, so I would like to thank staff in advance for giving up their holiday to work alongside our students at this crucial point in their education. Donation to Longfield Academy

Sports leaders are becoming an important part of Academy life;

going out into the local community and helping with sporting

events like primary sports days and beach volleyball tournaments.

In order to look the part, the PE department decided to secure some

sponsorship to buy some new Sports Leaders t-shirts. Not only

would these help our leaders stand out at events, it would also give

them the pride and responsibility to be an excellent ambassador for

the school.

Mr Paul Simpson from Davis Turner & Co. Ltd is one of our very

supportive school mentors on the business mentors programme. He

goes above and beyond for his mentees, offering them work

experience placements, attending drama performances of students

and he continues to support his mentees through 6th Form. He

approached us saying that he would like to help. He and his

company had a dress down day last month and raised £119.11

which he had donated to the PE department for the Sports Leader

tops.

Picturedright is Mrs Davies, Head of PE, receiving the cheque from

Paul. We are grateful for all their help and support and look forward

to sending them a photo of us in our new tops.

Trip to Margate and Herne Bay

On September 19th the Geography department took year 11s out on their fieldwork data collection day.

We visited Herne bay where they looked at longshore drift and what had been done to reduce the effects of this

along the coast. We then went onto Margate where students looked at whether regeneration has had a positive

impact upon the environment.

They carried out environmental impact surveys and took photographs to compare the regenerated areas of the town

and the areas that had not been regenerated.

We were very lucky with the weather and students enjoyed some time on the beach playing football in the sunshine

at the end of a hard day's work.

Year 7 Humanities visit to Eynsford and Lullingstone Roman Villa

On Friday 4th October over 130 students from Year 7 visited Eynsford and Lullingstone Roman Villa to carry out their

Humanities fieldwork in early October.

Students enjoyed investigating the ruins at the villa and the castle at Eynsford. They also completed traffic surveys and

field sketches in Eynsford.

Work will be continued back in the Academy and all students and teachers had a great day.

Longfield Academy LRC Every year the library loses a large number of books

due to wear and tear, lost books not replaced by

students, books that have left with leavers and been

forgotten which obviously has a dramatic effect on

our bookshelves.

The library is therefore always up for donations be it

good quality second hand or new. We do have a

suggested ever growing wishlist on Amazon, but

obviously this is not an exhaustive list and

suggestions are always welcomed as long as the

books are suitable for ages 11 - 18 and to be on

school bookshelves.

Our Amazon wishlist is an easy way to make a

donation as this comes directly to the LRC, just

please put a note with your order saying who the

donation is from so we know who to thank. https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/1XNP1EY1

Thank you in advance for your support.

Keep up to date with all things library on Social Media:-

https://twitter.com/AcademyLrc

We would love to know what you

are reading and books that you

would recommend.

On Wednesday 25th September Longfield Academy LRC was host to the Longfield Academy Bake Off in aid of

Macmillan instead of the traditional coffee morning. Academy staff were invited to submit their bake for a £1

donation and then staff were invited to taste and vote for their favourite bake by paying £1 to taste up to 5 bakes.

You will see from the photos that we have some very talented members of staff and would do a great job with

Paul Hollywood and Pru Leith in the tent. We can proudly say we raised £108.52 for this amazing charity.
