In February, our PTC sponsored the Annual Art Auction at Studio Channel Islands. All students created individual works of art and contributed to a class project. We had a wonderful turnout! Parents enjoyed the live jazz music, appetizers, and beverages while viewing art and bidding on the live auction class projects. Jodi Atkinson, a second grade teacher, has been spearheading this event every year. Her time and dedication to the auction is greatly appreciated by staff, students, and families. Funds from the auction support our art docent program and art teacher sessions for 4th and 5th grade.

PTA Honorary Service Awards: Each year, the PTA recognizes outstanding work taking place on campus. This year, we are excited to acknowledge Mrs. Lipsett, Mrs. Guzman and Mrs. Parkin for their commitment to DCS students. Mrs. Lipsett serves as DCS Historian and facilitator of our Family Fun Nights. Mrs. Guzman is instrumental in our ELAC, classroom gardens, and several other committees. Mrs. Parkin is our school counselor and works with our students in and out of the classroom. We will honor them March 27th at the HSA Awards!
Educator of the Year: Mrs. Johnson has been named Camarillo Educator of the Year by the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce! To know Mrs. Johnson is to love her and her dedication, skillset and efforts are beyond exceptional. We are so happy the larger Camarillo community can share in celebration of all Mrs. Johnson brings to her students and colleagues.
Career Day: DCS Career Day was February 28th and included a wide array of presenters. Professionals in our community, from various fields and career paths, shared their educational background and experiences with our students. We thank all who gave their time, as it was truly inspiring for our students to hear how college and career goals are met by hard work and determination.
New Sand Tables for TK and Preschool: Sand tables were added to the Transitional Kindergarten and Preschool Playground. Three standing play tables and play toys were built for the students to interact, create and enjoy. We would like to thank Christian for his efforts and congratulate him on meeting the requirements of his Eagle Scout service project.
Read Across America: Dos Caminos is celebrating our love of reading with activities on March 2nd - March 6th. The week begins on March 6th, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Each day will be a spirit day and include a theme connected to a Dr. Seuss book. The week will end with a culminating event where the campus comes together and reads our favorite books on the grass together.
Date: March 2020 To: Board of Trustees Via: Angelica M. Ramsey, Ed.D., Superintendent From: Kelly Hatton, Principal, Las Colinas Middle School Re: Monthly Campus Update February went by quickly with having one week off for Presidents’ Week. Despite this, we had several campus events, which are highlighted below. Our 8th graders were particularly busy! PTSA Meetings Our PTSA is filled with dedicated people who are currently working to plan our upcoming March 3rd “Career Day.” The PTSA has been supporting our educational efforts in all curricular areas such as the arts, math, science, and PE. The outgoing board members are working to set up our future board for success. ACHS Principal Q&A ACHS Principal Matt LaBelle and counselor Tommy Taketa were guest speakers at this month’s “Coffee with Kelly.” Many of our parents attended this Q&A to help prepare for next year’s move to high school. It was wonderful having Mr. LaBelle and Mr. Taketa at LC! We are planning on welcoming Rio and Rancho principals in the near future. 8th Grade Museum of Tolerance Field Trips Our 8th graders spent a day at Los Angeles’ Museum of Tolerance recently. Our kids learned so much, and were moved by the powerful words and images observed at the museum. Our teachers had prepared students for this visit in both their English and History classes. Our children asked intelligent questions and offered wise perspectives during the trip. 8th Grade ACHS Field Trip 8th graders visited ACHS on a recent half day trip to learn more about high school. All students were first in the gym to learn about ACHS programs such as their sports and electives. They were then given a snack, and then placed in smaller groups to tour the campus. Upcoming Events: March 3 – Career Day, 8:30 – 12 pm March 10 – PTSA Meeting, 8:30 am March 10-12 – 6th Grade Field Trips to Reagan Library March 31 & April 1 – 7th Grade Field Trips to Underwood Family Farm & WFVC Bird Museum

This memo serves to highlight the exciting activities that have taken place at La Mariposa School We started the month with a World Read Aloud Day and Global Play Day on February 5th. World Read Aloud Day is a worldwide event that celebrates the importance of reading to children to promote a love of reading. We also celebrated Global Play Day, which brings awareness of the need for unstructured playtime for children’s healthy development. Schools from all around the world participated, and we are happy to be part of the movement. The kids and teachers reported that it was a great time and the kids learned a lot of new things through play. Our second through fifth-grade teachers met to discuss fun activities that build leadership skills and improve student attendance. As a result of the meeting, we have incorporated two fun morning routines. Monday is now “Music Monday” and students that arrive on time can enjoy fun music in the MPR before school starts. Wednesday is now “Welcome Wednesday” and our house leaders greet kids at the front of the school in the morning. This is motivating for us all and helps us look forward to Wednesdays. We want to congratulate our “Standing Ovation” winners this month. Our fabulous teachers Nicole Sadowsky, Chris Rudolph, and Julie Hughes for their work on the report card committee and our outstanding occupational therapist, Jesse Cates. It is nice that the Pleasant Valley School District provides this opportunity for us to celebrate our school staff for the wonderful work they do. We are delighted that one of our students, Christian M., was selected to be the “Youth We Appreciate” Camarillo Optimist Club’s recipient. Dr. Ramsey, Mr. Blumfield and I celebrated Christian at the Jr.Optimist Club meeting on Monday, February 24th. Congratulations to Karvi P.for winning the Spelling B for the second year in a row. We are excited to go to the next round at Cal Lutheran in March. Our teachers are working hard and reviewing their data to plan instruction. We appreciate the time given to the teachers for “Data Days” to do this. It is very helpful because it provides us with time to identify and target students needing additional support. Our Pennies for Patients Drive will be ending on February 28th. We are proud of our students for raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Our transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade students celebrated the 100th day of school with exciting activities. It was a very fun day of school for them.
Our second grade students started a new unit in Benchmark, which focuses on investigating the past. This is an exciting unit, and I am sure the students will enjoy it.
Our third-grade team has been working on the area of rectangles and the teachers have developed fun methods for teaching the curriculum. One student shared, “This is really fun” during the lesson on area of rectangles. A few of the third-grade classes are reading The Wild Robot and the teachers have said the kids absolutely love this book. They also celebrated the 100th day of school with their little buddies.
The fourth-grade team has started Benchmark Unit 4, with a focus on understanding different points of view. They are also working on improper fractions and mixed numbers. We are excited that they will use the new Studies Weekly curriculum to study Native Californians.
Our fifth-grade students learned about the American Revolutionary War. In Science, they learned about ecosystems.
We are looking forward to our Dinner Dance and Auction on Saturday, March 7th. This year’s theme is “La Mariposa Nights”.

A month of Friendship, Kindness and Rest…as February came to a close, all of us have been the recipients of numerous acts of kindness and friendship, especially as we celebrated Valentine’s Day. As mentioned last month, our Spreading Kindness assembly was well-received, and it naturally spilled over into February as our students were able to continue the positive messages within our campus community. This is such an important message for our students and we welcome the opportunity to share it as often as possible…we all need more kindness, for sure!
This past month, we were also able to enjoy a very relaxing Presidents’ Week vacation as students and staff came back healthy, refreshed and ready for the next 7 weeks! There is so much to do before our Spring Break as the second trimester comes to an end. However, I am confident that my awesome staff will be up to meeting the challenges!
Finally, we were able to fully launch our Homework Clubs, as well as our second round of math tutoring, for our 2nd-5th grade students this month! I am very thankful for staff members who have been willing to serve our students in this capacity, and I am very excited to see the growth in our kids who need a little extra support. Together, we can make it happen!
Lego League in Action! This past month, Las Posas saw the first-ever Lego League initiated at our school site! We appreciate the time and energy from our very own Ms. DeFreece, who volunteered to head this exciting time of collaboration and learning with our students! Here are just a couple pictures from their first meeting:
We also had our first after-school sports program start in February with our TGA Sports program. During the first session, students were introduced to the basics of volleyball. For the second round, students will be taught the fundamentals of tennis! This program is just another way to help build solid school-to-home connections and I am thankful that we have enough interest to make it happen this year!
Upcoming Events: March 2-4: Studies Weekly Training March 9-27: Pennies for Patients Campaign March 9-13: Women in History Week March 10: ELAC Meeting March 23: Parent Education Night with Renee Marshall

Alas, spring is nearly here! As we enter our eighth month of school, and after a particularly troublesome flu season, I personally look forward to spring, a season of renewal, and revitalization that ushers in good health, and energy for teaching and learning!
Let us take advantage of our remaining time during our present academic year to ensure that all of our students are fully engaged in their learning experience. We have just a little over two months before we begin our Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) Testing in Mid-May for all students in Grades 3-8 and just over three months before our academic year draws to a close.
Daily, standards-based instruction and assessments, in conjunction with strong attendance, are key components of academic achievement, and spring testing success!

Faith Howard: Congratulations goes out to Faith Howard. Mrs. Howard received a Standing Ovation Award for January 2020. She is an outstanding teacher who brings passion and the love of learning into her classroom every day.
Stephanie Knecht: It is with great pleasure that we announce the Tri-County GATE Council is honoring Stephanie Knecht for her outstanding contributions to gifted education. Tri-County GATE Council is hosting a special luncheon and celebration in March for Mrs. Knecht and other honorees.
An Evening of Music: The Monte Vista Advanced Band Solo/Ensemble Concert at the Camarillo Library on Tuesday, March 17th at 7 PM is an opportunity for
students to perform chamber/small ensemble music pieces usually designed for two to five players. Students select and prepare their own music for the performances, which provides additional opportunities for developing independent musicianship skills. In some cases, the students will perform pieces designed for their entire section, for example this year we have a clarinet choir and a saxophone quintet both performing pieces in addition to their small group pieces. The Advanced Band will also perform several full-band selections to round out the evening.
Monte Vista welcomes Juanita Castro, Assistant Principal
Mrs. Castro will be supporting both Monte Vista and the Pleasant Valley School of Engineering and Arts as assistant principal for the remainder of the year. She will be alternating her time on the campuses. She is excited to be here and says, “It's a great honor to serve the students, teachers, and families of Monte Vista Middle School. I have worked with the Pleasant Valley School District for 12 years, most recently as the assistant principal of Pleasant Valley School of Engineering and Arts. Throughout my years at PVSD, I have held various leadership roles. I enjoy teaching, mentoring, and learning! I look
Continued from previous page forward to building collaborative relationships with the MV staff and community in order to best serve our young scholars. I believe in providing a positive learning environment, where students, teachers, and families work collaboratively, modeling our expectations and hopes for our students as future leaders of our community. All students are eager and able to learn at the highest level when provided with challenging learning experiences that strike their curiosity. I look forward to leading and learning with our talented staff and students!”

Re: Monthly Campus Update
This memo serves to highlight several of the activities that have taken place or are on the horizon at Pleasant Valley School of Engineering and Arts during the months of March and April.
Youth We Appreciate - One of PVSEA’s finest scholars, Chase Morales will be recognized by the Noontime Optimists Club on March 2nd. Chase is an all-around outstanding student who is dedicated to her school and community service. She has a 4.0 grade-point average, serves on the associated student body, and a student athlete.
Read Across America Celebration – March 2nd will begin a weeklong celebration of reading at PVSEA. Some of the activities that will take place during the week are: Lunch on the Lawn, dress-up days, reading challenges and a read-a- thon. 100 Mile Challenge - Approximately 200 PVSEA students in grades K-8th are actively participating in the 100 Mile Challenge. Many of our students are discovering the joy and healthy benefits of daily running and regular goal setting. Our students are finding that by running during their recess and lunch breaks, they are more focused and prepared for the rigors of the classroom. Numerous PVSEA students have reached milestones of 25, 50 and 75 miles. To date, five student athletes are positioned to complete the entire challenge by the end of March! PTA Meeting - The PTA will be meeting on March 12th at 8:30AM. Parent / Teacher Conferences will be conducted March 16th, 17th and 18th to provide parents a one-on-one opportunity to meet with their student’s teacher to create a home / school connection that will further support the educational programs offered at PVSEA. College Tours - The mantra at PVSEA when speaking with our scholars is not “if you go to college” but rather “when you go to college”… So to facilitate our “college bound” mindset, all middle school students visit a local college. On March 19th our 8th Graders will travel to Westmont College.
Parent Engagement Night - On March 23rd PVSEA will be working collaboratively with LPS and DCS to create a free parenting workshop entitled Healthy Technology with Children. This is the second collaboration between the three schools to offer a learning opportunity for our families. The workshop will be hosted at PVSEA (EEC MPR) on March 23rd from 6:00-7:30. Snacks and Child Care will be provided.
Student of the Month - In March the scholars of PVSEA that have embodied what has been determined as key factors to student academic success: work habits, goal setting to achieve an academic personal best, and adherence to the character trait of the month - KINDNESS - will be recognized at the Student of the Month assembly. Every teacher will select one student from their class that has personified these key factors. Each student and their parents / guardians are invited to a luncheon where they are served lunch by their principal, read a personal narrative written by their teacher as to why they were selected, awarded a certificate, and receive several gift certificates from local restaurants and vendors for their achievements. The Student of the Month assembly is scheduled for March 26th.
Honorary Service Awards - On March 27th, the PTA will be recognizing several outstanding volunteers at the Annual Honorary Service Awards. This event recognizes volunteers that have made a recognizable difference on our campus and is a Thank You for their service!
School Tours - PVSEA conducts monthly school tours. Tours to date have been well attended by both neighborhood families and families from inside and outside of the district interested in school choice. The word is getting out that PVSEA is a destination school! School tours are conducted the last Friday of each month with remaining tours scheduled on: March 27th, April 24th*, and May 29th at 9am.
Disaster Preparedness - In order to prepare our students and staff for an emergent situation, PVSEA conducts monthly disaster preparedness trainings on both the Main and EEC Campuses. All trainings are conducted as teachable moments (for students and staff) with the intent that if a disaster should occur we are ready to “play the way we’ve practiced”. This month’s training will be conducted on March 30th at 8:30AM and 9:30AM.
Trimester II Report Cards - Report cards will go home with every student on Friday, March 31st. While report cards serve as a regular part of a school’s accountability process, I read every report card to measure our efforts and ensure that student achievement targets are being met. As I read our report cards, it became abundantly clear that what we are reporting to our families is – “student achievement at PVSEA is on the rise”. A paradigm shift has taken place at PVSEA over the last several years. Our students believe they can be successful, teachers understand that every student is a learner, and all stakeholders are putting forth the necessary effort to achieve greatness!
CGI Math Night - On April 1st PVSEA will be hosting a Math Game Night that focuses on teaching our parents math games taught to their students during the school day utilizing Cognitively Guided Instruction. The workshop will be hosted at PVSEA Gym on April 1st from 6:00-7:30. Food will be available for purchase. Honor Roll - On April 10th PVSEA will recognize the middle school scholars that achieved Honor Roll status during Trimester I. Students are recognized at an assembly at three different levels: Bronze 3.0-3.49, Silver 3.5-3.99 and Gold 4.0. I am so proud of our scholars and the momentum our middle school program is gaining. Cougar Pride!
Date: March 2020 To: Board of Trustees Via: Angelica M. Ramsey, Ed.D., Superintendent From: Maria Magaña, Principal, RRS Re: Monthly Campus Update February was short, sweet and full time off at Rancho Rosal.
Talent Show: In February, we had a blast highlighting our students’ many talents at the yearly Rancho Rosal’s “Everybody’s Got Talent” show. The show spanned students of all ages from kinder to 5th grade. Just to name a few of the acts that kept the audience entertained, students performed a variety of talents from musical, dance, martial arts, gymnastics and student-parent duets. The night ended with the traditional grand finale teacher and staff dance.
Global Play Day: On February 6th Rancho Rosal embraced Global Play Day to promote the benefits of unstructured play in school. Global Play Day includes a time to share and reflect on how play supports student development. Throughout the day teachers checked in and brainstormed a list of what students learned about themselves and how they used their brains through play.
Family Magic Show: Last month we had two anti-bully assemblies that sent a powerful message through the use of magic. As a follow up, we hosted a special night time family event offering a spectacular Magic Show. Students were excited to see Rancho Rosal’s health tech sawed in half! Students and parents enjoyed a night out full of magical fun!
Upcoming Events

Re: Monthly Campus Update
The month of March provided many exciting opportunities for student learning. Many teachers have begun to explore and incorporate community circles into their classrooms. This has given students an additional chance to express their feelings and have their voice heard. Our transitional kindergarten through second grade classes have fully implemented the Second Step curriculum. I look forward to next year when all grades will be using the Second Step curriculum so we can have a more unified program to help students interact and treat others with respect. Our seventh grade students started with the Naviance program, and have learned more about their interests and possible future careers. We continued with our lunchtime sports program with basketball. We will finish the tournament by the end of the month. All students really enjoy the program, with many students cheering on their friends. Our ASB students are doing a wonderful job refereeing the games, so the program can run when I’m not on campus. The staff and students keep striving toward our strategic goals. The focus for the rest of the year is to address the goals that are not fully realized. We will continue to use time for PLC and Data Days to refine our teaching practices to improve our outcomes for language arts and math. We will continue to implement more restorative justice practices throughout the school. For example, our student handbook has been rewritten to incorporate a menu of restorative practices so that we have more options to positively handle student disciplinary issues. Lastly, we strive each day to use social media to showcase SRTMS in the most positive light. All students and their families have opportunities to participate in engaging activities designed to build an even better sense of community at school. Last month, we held a series of family dances in for our Tk-5th grade families. They were a smashing success, and everyone who came had a wonderful time. Also, on February 29, the PTO held a Dr. Seuss Night. As usual, we had a packed house for that event. On March 20, we will have, host or offer a middle school hike. We want to provide another social activity for our middle school students to interact positively and create memories. As always, we invite the Board to come over and visit SRTMS at any time.
