HAPPY & SAFE

HOLIDAY TO ALL OUR

FAMILIES

The Importance of Sleep

With school holidays quickly approaching

and our kids wanting to push the bounda-

ries with bed time, I would like to take this

opportunity to share some information

from the Generation Next conference that I had the privilege of

attending last month.

Dr Chris Seton explains that children have three pillars of good

health – regular exercise, good nutrition and GOOD SLEEP.

Good sleep may be linked to improved outcomes in Maths,

Science and English and is critical for our kids to maintain a pos-

itive mood and be more successful in warding off the effects of

anxiety and depression.

Dr Seton explains that 12 hours of UNINTERRUPTED sleep each

night for toddlers to 8 year old children is ideal and that 10

hours each night for 9 – 18 year old young people the minimum

amount. Some ‘tricks’ to support quality sleep in our children is

having a regular bedtime, implementing a routine such as read-

ing a story before bed and using the bed ONLY for sleeping ra-

ther than play and using electronic devices.

The importance of good sleep is a critical factor in supporting

our kids and ourselves in being the most effective people that

we can be! Mr Denny Ottone Deputy Principal
