QATSIF GraduationQATSIF Graduation

Hello, my name is Sharni-Lynn Thompson and I am aYear 12 student at Proserpine State High School. OnTuesday 22 October I had the privilege to attend theMackay QATSIF Scholarship Graduation held at CQUUniversity. QATSIF stands for the ‘Queensland Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander Funding’. This scholarship hasreally helped me over the past 2 years because it paid formy schooling which included my school fees, uniforms, senior jersey, one formal/graduation ticket, stationary, school books, school excursions, and much more. At theend of Year 10 when I was told that I was successful inreceiving this scholarship I was so excited that it gave mean opportunity to do well in my education.

When we went to Mackay for the gradation it was soamazing listening to our Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander history, watching performances, and getting tomeet everyone that had a scholarship and also meet allthe staff and everyone else that was there. It was niceto see an ex-student from Proserpine State High SchoolKira Allen, as a special guest speaking on behalf of theYear 12 students, telling her story about completing Year12, receiving her QCE and going to university at CQUstudying Sports Psychology in Rockhampton. I had sucha great time accepting the certificate award and thephotos and meeting staff from QATSIF Head Office. I amalso enjoying the experience and opportunity of beinginvolved with this great opportunity before me.

Junior Secondary NewsJunior Secondary News

Last week, on Junior Secondary Assembly, and again onwhole school assembly this week, Mr McDermid addressedstudents about the importance of a positive finish to theschool year. He specifically reminded all students of thebehavioural expectations regarding classroom andplayground behaviour. As we approach the final five weeksof the year, students will begin to prepare for the finalassessments of the semester. It is most important thatthroughout this time students remain focused in class sothat they can achieve the best results possible to concludethe academic year.

An important aspect of completing the year successfully isensuring that students are monitoring their behaviour, bothinside the classroom and in the playground. Most juniorsecondary students display positive, supportive and respectful

behaviours consistently in all facets of school life. There aresome students however, who sometimes find some aspects ofschool challenging.

We will continue to support these students but would alsoencourage parents to have conversations with their child/children about being positive and respectful. Staff will continueto use the policies and procedures already in place to ensurethat all junior secondary students are provided with theopportunity to learn in a respectful, safe and supportiveenvironment until the conclusion of the school year.

AssessmentAssessment

All students in Junior Secondary still have assessments tocomplete over the coming weeks. Some of these assessmentswill not be completed until Week 9. I urge all students tocontinue to focus on making sure that they are well preparedfor any remaining assessments.

Subject Selections 2020Subject Selections 2020

By now, all junior secondary students should have submittedtheir subject selections for 2020. If your child has not submittedtheir selections, please ensure that they submit these as amatter of urgency. Students who do not submit selections maymiss out on their preferred options for 2020. Subject selectionforms are available from the school office and school website.

Last week, Year 12 Geography class set out on our lastadventure in the field. No crocodiles or wind swept beachesthis time – it was to brave the traffic of Main Street Proserpineand observe the flow of vehicles around the centre roundabout. Our final unit, Connecting People and Places, required someapplication of town planning skills to decide how, if we couldbe Harry Potter and wave a magic wand, we would redesignlocal road connections to attract more people into the centre oftown. Little did they know it, but their exam question would alsoallow them to apply those skills to our own school’s drop-offand pick-up congestion. I am looking forward to reading thoseessays – perhaps there will be some creative ideas to pass onto the powers-that-be.

On Tuesday night 5 November, creativity was on display at theAnnual Arts Showcase titled, The Passage of Time where Year

12 Art students had the opportunity to display a number ofitems they had produced throughout 2019.

I must say that I haven’t attended one of these exhibitionssince way back in 1997. What strikes me is how the arts havecontinued to develop at Proserpine State High School at a morethan pleasing rate. The quality of the work on display was toa very high standard. Artists resorted to a range of mediumsand styles so audiences were treated to some very captivating3D pieces, while viewing impressionistic acrylics on canvasand some hand drawn yet digitally rendered prints. It looksas if Proserpine State High School is nurturing some fantasticartists while keeping up with technology and evolving as afaculty. So our artists are producing at speed with the times, while not forgetting the importance of styles and mediums fromtraditional forms of visual art.

Thank you artists of Year 12 2019, you are certainly setting astrong tone for the brilliance to be displayed in years to come atProserpine State High School.
