Preparing for the Fish Bowl Experience

    During Data Team Implementation Visits

Purpose of the Fish BowlData Team Implementation Visits are designed to provide sustained, focused professional learning for our Data Teams andAdministrators. The Implementation Visits take place during the year, in an authentic Data Team venue, as a means of providing our

Data Teams with individualized feedback that promotes collaboration, builds capacity for teacher leaders, and fosters a culture of

    support between teams and administration.

Understanding the Fish BowlThe Fish Bowl allows observers of an actual, authentic Data Team meeting to be active

listeners - making notes of best practices in collaboration and data discussion - and then,

at the end, allows observers to offer positive, constructive feedback about what they have

seen and heard during the session. The Fish Bowl consists of the Data Team conductinga meeting in real time with current data.

The observers are fellow teachers and Data Team Facilitators from other teams in the

school who surround the outside of the Data Team. Administrators are an important

component of a successful Fish Bowl, as well; their participation signals a culture of

support and sets the schools expectations.

    The Fish Bowl Members

The Data Team you select to conduct the authentic data team meeting for the group does not necessarily have to be the best datateam in the school. It can be; however, all teams benefit from the comments, impromptu training, and immediate feedback. The

selected Data Team does need to be a Core Content Area.

Selecting the Fish Bowl Audience is CriticalThe Fish Bowl is intended to be surrounded by active listeners who record ideas and comments about the process while the Data Team

conducts an authentic session. Successful Fish Bowl audiences include:

    1) Data Team FacilitatorsData Team Facilitators will be provided professional leave to attend the Fish Bowl, coded as District Initiated.

    2) Positive, Supportive TeachersThese can be individual teachers who have a planning block at the time of the Fish Bowl, or professional leave days can beused in order for an entire grade level/content area Data Team to observe another team all together.

First, we must bear in mind that perfect coverage

of any initiative is an illusion. It makes more sense

to invest in small changes first.

    Second, these small, incremental

    implementation strategies will often

    times lead to more sustainable

    results.

If you have received Data Team

training and have not yet begun the

process, follow the ten steps listedbelow. You can jump start Data

Teams in one content area focusing

on just one standard. You deserve a

short term win....so what are you

    waiting for?

    Data Teams and Short Term

    Wins: The Key to Effective

    Implementation

Many times after I deliver a Data Team seminar, a

few attendees will approach me and claim that

    everything I presented makes

complete sense. They agree with the

    Power Standards approach for

    focused instruction and understand

    the differences between formative

    and summative assessments.

They also tell me why Data Teams

wo nt wo rk in th eir sc ho ol or

district: You obviously have not met

our students, that wont work with

these teachers, and we dont have

the capacity to even begin this are

    all too common refrains.

POWER STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE DATA TEAMS IMPLEMENTATION

    1. Choose just ONE standard or important topic

that will have the greatest impact on student

    6. Administer the same assessment at the end of
