authoritative consumption values can be provided for the special format “Ibbenbüren” (sandstone look) due to the range of individual design options.

Building up the coating Surface preparation The surface must be level, solid, dry, clean, load bearing and free from efflorescence, sintered lay-ers, separating agents, corrosion promotion components or other intermediate layers affecting the adhesion. Check existing coats for suitability, carrying capacity and adhesiveness. Remove de-fective and unsuitable coats thoroughly and dispose of them as per the applicable regula-tions. Thoroughly remove any limepaint. Rub down and clean smooth and dense substrates.

Thoroughly clean areas affected by fungal and algal infestation and treat with Universal Disinfectant 542. Fluate re-plastered areas properly. Lay flat facing bricks on reinforcement layer in Brillux ETIC-System only after allowing it to cure and dry properly (at least 3 days, at +20 °C, 65 % r.m.). Prime highly absorbent substrates, e.g. gypsum plaster, gypsum plasterboard, concrete, using Lacryl Deep Penetrating Primer ELF 595 or Deep Penetrating Primer 545. Also refer to VOB Part C, DIN 18 363, Par. 3.

Prime coat Plaster Primer 3710, according to color of gluing mortar. Depending on the color gluing mortar, we recommend the following colors for the plaster primer: Color Color plaster gluing mortar: primer: white 0095 white light grey Scala 87.03.18 dark grey Scala 90.03.27 On ETICS Reinforcement Plaster ZF-Granite 3535 the prime coat is not required.

Use Division of areas Measurement and drawing of a exact horizontal baseline around the whole building. Fixed surface elements, e.g. window lintels, planned upright coursed, etc., form the starting line. The most effective method is to mark the height division, e.g. using a hose level, at a distance of approx. 30, to the corners of the building. The surfaces measured in this way, are then divided horizontally, considering the chosen format and joints, and covered with flat facing bricks section by section. A horizontal division (height division) of 25 cm high strips is recommended. In the case of flat facing bricks in DF format (thin format according to DIN) this height corresponds to 4 layers (at a typical joint width of approx. 1 cm). In the case of NF format (standard format according to DIN), this height corresponds to 3 layers, joint width approx. 1.2 cm. Minor height differences may be compensated by varying the joint width slightly. Cutting of bricks If required, the flat facing bricks can be cut to size, e.g. half bricks. To that end, mark the cutting edge on the back of the brick, cut the brick using a cutter knife and break it apart.

Gluing Stir Gluing Mortar 3485 thoroughly and mix with water, if required, to obtain the required application consistency. Application should generally be done from bottom up. Apply Gluing Mortar 3485 in layers according to division evenly using a toothed trowel 4 x 6 mm. Only apply as much gluing mortar as you can cover with flat facing bricks before curing sets in (skin formation). Start laying the bricks at the corners, then fix any lines required and lay the remaining bricks of the layer. To that end, press the facing brick into the open glue bed, ensuring, by gently moving the brick, that the brick is embedded properly without any hollow gaps. Using a moist paintbrush, smooth out the joint immediately after embedding the bricks (within open time of glue). The transitions between gluing mortar and flat facing bricks must be closed to ensure that water cannot penetrate. Finally, after allowing the material to cure for a short time, remove any glue residues using a paintbrush or a hand brush.

Laying Patterns Half bricks (length: 11.5 cm) can be produced by cutting the whole bricks to size. Laying pattern I "wild pattern" The so-called "wild pattern" is the most frequent pattern used in practice. It is characterized by an irregular arrangement of whole bricks (stretchers) and half bricks (half bats) in any order. This pattern is very simple and can be used universally. It is particularly recommended for surfaces in ETIC-Systems. The corner stones at the corners with ¾ "stretchers" are to be offset. Laying pattern II "half pattern" In the "half pattern" (longitudinal bond offset by ½ brick) the whole bricks (stretchers) are arranged regularly and offset by ½ brick in every other layer. If used in ETIC-System, this pattern requires particularly careful working. Laying Pattern III "Cross Bond" In the classic "Cross Bond" half bricks (half bats) and whole bricks (stretchers) are exchanged in every other layer, the whole bricks are offset by half a brick. The corner stones at the corners with ¾ "stretchers" are to be offset.

Sandstone appearance Can be compared to "Wild Pattern" Aesthetic surface design achieved by irregular arrangement of the three brick formats. For color design, the three colors can be used in any combination. Use of only one color is also possible. Mixing the colors in ratio 1:1:1 results in a particularly harmonic color design. For better assessment of the surface appearance, we recommend preparing sample surfaces, taking the joint color into consideration. Design of lintels Variant I Upright course of bricks. Particularly recommended for standardized DIN-compliant flat facing brick formats. Upright course of bricks in lintel area corresponds to 4 horizontal layers, in the case of DF-format (thin format 240 x 52 mm), and 3 horizontal layers in the case of NF-format (standard format 240 x 71 mm). Variant II Modified upright course of bricks. Whole brick (stretcher) followed by to half bricks (half bats) and so on. This upright course of bricks also corresponds to 3 or 4 horizontal layers, depending on the format.

Variant III Continuous lintel if ETICS Aluminium Starter Rail Section 3770 is used as underside of the lintel. In this case, accentuation of the lintel area is avoided deliberately. All flat facing bricks are laid horizontally. Note Individual color design Brillux flat facing bricks are hand-made, individually manufactured products. Individual bricks may differ from one another both as regards color and dimensions. For this reason, it is not possible to provide legally binding samples. Contiguous surfaces In the case of contiguous surfaces, mix the bricks from several boxes or use bricks from different boxes alternately. Temperature and weathering During drying, the temperature must not drop below +5 °C. Do not apply to surfaces heated up by the sun. Protect surface against moisture impact during drying and curing of the gluing mortar. New mineral substrates Allow new, mineral substrates, concrete or plaster (MG PII, PIII) to cure for at least 14 days (4 weeks recommended) before coating them. Depending on weather conditions and the time of year, the drying process may take longer.
